- cheeze69, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4To all of you who don't understand packaging and the pride of owning a nice product: Ever wondered why Caterpillar paints the scoop buckets on their big tractors even though the first time they're used, it'll all get scraped off? Ever wonder why, when you buy a nice BMW/Benz class car, they bring it into the heated showroom for you to inspect and they take the time to demonstrate things? Obviously, you wonder why Apple spends the time to nicely package their products.
It's because, when you're not shopping at Wal-Mart or Hyundai, and you are paying for a premium product, PRESENTATION COUNTS. I'll guess that many of the people who are bitching about this "being a cardboard box" and whatnot do not 1) have the money to buy premium products or 2) are so caught-up in their "rebellion against over priced products" that they never buy such things and simply would not understand. Trying to explain the concept of presentation and packaging to these people is akin to explaining to a trailer-park resident why the rest of us like to live in 'big fancy homes without wheels'. - frem001, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5"Does anyone honestly care about how producted are packed and shipped? I never could figure out the fascination of that. That and it always seems to be the Apple fanboys seem to care about it more than onthers... hmmm."
Apple is one of the few companies that controls the experience from buying the product, to opening etc. They control the whole experience and is one reason why people are surprised and delighted with their products. - Mr5by5, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2As others have already said, this does matter. Apple is all about the details, and those that "build it themselves" should understand the details of their box. Now just apply that to the entire mac experience. It's like that.
I was a LONG TIME HARD CORE GAMER and I can say that once I bought my first Ipod - I 'GOT IT'.
The packaging matters. - mattgoff, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The packaging is important for two reasons:
1) It implys the overall attention to detail that Apple puts into their user design. Putting so much effort into a "disposable" design causes customers to infer that the actual product (inside and out) will be as well designed.
2) It is designed to be environmentally friendly by using as little packaging as possible. Frankly, I'm surprised that one of the dongles/cables is plastic-wrapped-- it looks unnecessary to me. - andesco, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1> free ipod shuffle?
No that the Apple Remote, which looks exactly like a shuffle - geminitojanus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Be careful! Files claiming to be pre-releases of Apple Products have been known to contain VIRUSES!"
Just make sure to decompress the file, run the thing, and type in your admin password. ;) - IpodCrazy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Does the power adapter look kinda big to yall? And yes, I am southern.

"i love macs but i'm not buying a macbook till the have two mouse buttons..yah you can go on and on about the simplicity but the bottom line is contextual menus are a huge part of the os, and they are dropping the ball."
um... CTL + Click... nearly the same thing as a right click.
that box is not nearly as sexy as the plain brown box with the big blue 'e' on the side ;)
I personally want to go rotate every god damn box that has the 'e' on it cause its tilted! it shouldnt be tilted.
ummm... apples - andesco, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I know packaging seems stupid, but unpacking a Mac is part of the experience (I know, its stupid, but we love it).
- danielwsmithee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1About the two button on a laptop. I have Dell laptop at work, and an iBook at home. I find it much simpler to use ctrl+click for right click then having a second button on the track-pad. Just a personal preference I guess.
I wouldn't feel the same about a desktop though, track-pads just don't work with two buttons well. - deadbaby, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@geterix: So you don't care about the box but you spent time looking at the links and commenting on this article? Strange..
And yea, the box matters. A huge amount of marketing research has proven without a doubt that the "out of box experience" is one of the major factors customers judge a company on. It's marketing 101. You may not like it but that's how it is. - flap, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I enjoy the packaging from apple from a design point of view. The packaging is usually clever and elegant, but if another company did it that way i would think the same, it isn't just an apple fanboy thing.
- binkitybonk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1i never really thought much about packaging until i unwrapped my first ipod. even though i had no knowledge of this whole cult of apple packaging at the time, it was totally a sexy experience to open the box and unwrap the product.
- zoziw, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I've purchased two Macs and have to agree that, as dumb as it sounds, opening the box is as much a part of the Mac experience as actually using the thing.
I also bought a HP laptop last year and taking it out of the box just wasn't the same.
Half of the temptation of buying another Mac is getting to open it up...even though I don't need another. - runner91786, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Why are there the crazy stickers on the bottom? That is definitely a first...
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Buy a Mighty Mouse. Apple's three-button mouse. Or set up the trackpad to support a right click/contextual menu. You can do that too.
- Chasin_Fat_Kids, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I remember the day I opended my 12'' PowerBook - I ran and showed my mom the packaging - she was like, "yeah, that's nice honey."
- lonelycanuck, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1they put in hersheys kisses in the box!
- frem001, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i should really be asking what you're planning to use it for.
- cathode, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0YAY NEW APPLE PACKAGING!!!1
- Sixcolors, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Does anyone honestly care about how producted are packed and shipped?"
I'm sure the guys who designed the package and the guys in shipping care. It's their livelyhood. Also, when something comes in an ugly package you're less likely to want it over another product. Although... from the tone you used I'm guessing you're a Windows user until death, so you're used to ugly boxes and bargan bin packaging. I know what it's like, I've built several PCs myself. No component I've ever bought outside of maybe the video card had pretty packaging. That's just the way it goes, I guess.
That reminds me of last summer. I went to visit some family and they waited until I showed up to buy their first PC. It was an HP, and though the packaging didn't look bad, it was terribly cluttered. Wording everywhere, no good shots of what was supposed to be in the box. Apple packaging reflects the company's image; simple, clean, and to the point. - Joshosh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Oh and all I really want to be availabe on the macbook pro is the ability for me to still use http://www.nurs.or.jp/%7Ecalcium/3gpp/.iTS A mpg4 converter that i use for my psp.
- bedouin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0One of the only drawbacks to buying a refurbished Mac is not getting the original packaging :) I still have the boxes to all my Macs because it's just a fun experience and the packaging is usually cool.
- silentvirus, on 10/25/2008, -0/+0free ipod shuffle?
- Joshosh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Im using it for school.College and the rest of highschool.I also ment to say when i want a compy all my parents see is the price tag, they really dont care whats in the sucker.what laptop do u have?
- diggnationdevon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Very sexy, I am getting the iMac this summer. I was disappointed that the MacBook doesn't have a two-button click! Who agrees that just the box alone is sexy? lol
- snugsoho, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Designed with their retail store customers in mind... now that new machine is a lot easier to haul back home on the train.
+ digg - h00ligan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i love macs but i'm not buying a macbook till the have two mouse buttons..yah you can go on and on about the simplicity but the bottom line is contextual menus are a huge part of the os, and they are dropping the ball.
- NickDanger, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I can read that the first sticker with a barcode says Apple Development Team. But I'm wondering what the second sticker says, I read, "Medimac" with a cupertino number of 408-974-XXXX can anyone shed any light on this?
- Gullop, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Dell boxes kick ass. There is nothing better than getting those boxes from UPS with the big blue "E" on the side.
I don't like how thin the apple box is, doesn't seem like your getting much for your money :( - Zippo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I love Apple's packaging... they always make you feel so happy opening it - like a kid on Christmas.
- stoops, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This story should be x-rated. Man, is it just me or is it getting hot in here?
- Midi3e, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Chicken101 must be a Fanboy ;)
- iobuffa, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Typical apple package: Lots of thought and care on the details. I'm more concerned with the contents of it personally :) The power brick looks bigger than airport express... interesting.
Anyway, time the cue the "fanboy" drinking game. Everytime some says fanboy/fanboi, take a drink! GO! - andesco, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0> http://www.ubergeek.tv/article.php?pid=55
lol. hilarious - danbruno, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yeah yeah, unpacking pictures, very cool.
What the hell is with the power brick though? What is this, an XBox 360? - mcgirt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Too bad MacBook is such a retarded name.
- wireplay, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Move to Iceland.
- pgm_01, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Apple people crack me up. The only things I care about when I receive a computer in a box is whether all of the pieces are there and that it was protected enough against the abuse of shipping. Who needs the added cost of fancy inks or artistic Styrofoam?
- macintoshRus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yes, http://www.codez4mac.com
Thanks a lot! - andesco, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0There are far to many "haters" on digg. If you like a story, digg the story. If think something is lame or stupid, don't digg.

- frem001, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Hey guys I need advice.
Okay im a 16 yr old who is good with comps.Well I really want to start getting familiar with Macs, and when the mac book pro came out I thought this would be a good way to get familiar with macs and get my laptop.I really want a laptop for school. So should i get it?I mean i see computers that have more memory but they sure dont have that core duo.Its really expensive, and i dont want to waste so much mony on a laptop that im not familiar with.So is a mac book pro good for a beginner?Or should i get a cheapy ibook for a 1000?Please help me out,i try asking adults but when it comes to comps all they see i the price tag.Oh and if u have any suggestions to a laptop, feel free to tell me."
what software do you use. you might want to wait till the macbook comes out. - Cowboy5995, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Its a box move on. I will give you the fact that it looks good and that it has been well thought out as far as marketing. I just dont know why its front page material. Digg worthy yes but not front page.
- silentauthority, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@pgm 01
I smell a poor loser... it's okay, we love you anyway. - frem001, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1"Im using it for school.College and the rest of highschool.I also ment to say when i want a compy all my parents see is the price tag, they really dont care whats in the sucker.what laptop do u have?"
I used to have a 15" powerbook but i gave that to my dad (he had a sony vaio but loves his powerbook now) and swapped for a powermac g5, i have now ordered a 15" MacBook Pro so i can do work on the go. well if you're thinking of using it to convert video for your psp you won't have a problem since there is lots of this type of software. I think to get your parents into the idea of buying one of these, you're going to have o convince them that you need a computer aimed at professionals. I think if you can convince your parents that you will get the most from this computer perhaps they would get you one. Do you have any idea which profession you would like to pursue? Price wise you need to look beyond the component price since you get a lot of software which you would need to pay for seperately with a normal pc, and for the most part they are more secure than pcs. if you work part time you might be able to subsidize part of the cost. have you had a look at www.macteens.com you could ask the members on there for some help as well. - kjartan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Oh baby! I'll be getting mine in the next month or so!! ^_^
