Pretty much why the video is so funny. - Xspire, on 05/10/2008, -1/+4To be honest, the macbook air itself is just not thin enough for me. I suggest they knocked the little bastard down to about 2 MB of Ram and give it 10 GB of HD space. That's computing on the go!
- redwallhp, on 05/10/2008, -0/+5So you want an Apple EEE PC, basically?
- Xspire, on 05/12/2008, -0/+2yeah more or less.... no just less.
- redwallhp, on 05/10/2008, -0/+5So you want an Apple EEE PC, basically?
- FredFredrickson, on 05/09/2008, -9/+3Or thick enough, depending on how you look at it. :D
- Eminemdrdre00, on 05/09/2008, -13/+262I've never understood why anyone would pick a MacbookAir over the Macbook. For about a half inch less thickness...really?
- frooo, on 05/09/2008, -7/+53The same reason that people buy bottled water that costs $40-$60 for 750ml ..... because they can.
For reference, that water is called Bling h2o... and I really dont understand why someone would spend that much on water.- hayzeus, on 05/09/2008, -1/+31You actually get a free case of Bling with every Air purchase.
- Modestexcuse, on 05/09/2008, -1/+4I only got a 12 pack :(
- mhender, on 05/09/2008, -16/+10How about the same reason someone buys bottled water in the first place? It's just as stupid and as much of a waste of money as the macbook air.
- Modestexcuse, on 05/09/2008, -5/+15I buy bottled water often, it's called convenience. (oh, and I have millions of dollars)
- mhender, on 05/09/2008, -8/+14So it's more convenient to lug a case of water from the grocery store than it is to re-fill a bottle with your tap water, which typically has higher standards than bottled water? That's called flawed logic.
- bob12321, on 05/09/2008, -1/+7mhender, he is referring to if he is some where, he wont walk in to some one's house and ask to use the tap. Most people will just go to a vending machine put $1 in and get some water.
- Modestexcuse, on 05/09/2008, -1/+13No, when I go play basketball at the park, or at the courts on campus, I often grab a bottle on my way, or sometimes a gallon or two to share. The park I frequent the most doesn't have a fountain. I really don't think I need to justify my purchase of water, or anything for that mater. I'm pretty sure I've read in a few places that we need it to survive.
- mhender, on 05/09/2008, -10/+4So why not refill your bottle on the way, champ? You aren't too bright.
- Modestexcuse, on 05/09/2008, -0/+10I'm far from a champ, but thanks for the compliment just the same.
What exactly is your arguement on someone buying water? Please, make your point, rather than react to anything I say.
Is it cost? If so, I can afford it. - DeathJux, on 05/10/2008, -0/+3The only compelling argument I've ever heard against bottled water is all the other waste that goes into producing it... like 20 gallons of water consumed to produce one 1-liter bottle of water.
- threemagic, on 05/09/2008, -3/+5I buy it because it's RO'd.. clean water is a detoxifier...
but bottom line buyers never look at overall value.- cthellis, on 05/10/2008, -0/+6Water itself is a detoxifier. The most popular brands--Dasani and Aquafina--are indeed RO'd, which has consistently been shown to not be measurably healthier than tap water; do you actually think the "enhanced detoxification" of RO'd can or has been measured, and actually has an affect outside of a margin of error?
Basically, you're gaining effectively nothing unless your township's water itself has problems, at which point you'd still be looking for a water softener/house filtration system anyway, because you'd rather not be using that same water for your dishes, for showers and bathing, etc. - Magnus150, on 05/10/2008, -0/+1What toxins does it detoxify? Tired of everyone talking about "toxins"
- cthellis, on 05/10/2008, -0/+6Water itself is a detoxifier. - t0ny, on 05/09/2008, -0/+6Nothing wrong with bottled water. Just over priced. The soda companies are making a ton of cash. Its just a bottle of soda without the soda! And for the same price!
- fanclerks, on 05/09/2008, -2/+7What I find the most amusing about bottled water is it almost always the exact same water that you can get out of the tap. In fact, if I remember right, the water in Aquafina comes directly from the NYC aquifer.
- threemagic, on 05/09/2008, -5/+4Anyone who believes you can't read. Aquafina says right on the label that it's run through a process called reverse osmosis. RO is the process NASA invented to purify water..
- haydesigner, on 05/09/2008, -1/+1Used to, not any more.
- FreakyT, on 05/10/2008, -3/+4"Aquafina says right on the label that it's run through a process called reverse osmosis."
Yes, just like any halfway decent filter you can install on your tap at home these days.
- OrangeSoda31, on 05/11/2008, -1/+3I drink bottled because tap water in San Diego comes from the Colorado river.
- haydesigner, on 05/11/2008, -1/+1...and?
Is full of contaminants? Or skunky? Or even bad tasting?
I live in San Diego (Tierrasanta neighborhood), and I just put my tap water in a Brita pitcher (whose filter I change about once a year), and it tastes fantastic.

- TomKarpik, on 05/09/2008, -5/+0Really? The MBP has "at least" a 3.2 GHz processor?
- Nitrodist88, on 05/10/2008, -0/+1Jump the gun much, TomKarpik?

- mossblaser, on 05/10/2008, -0/+1The macbooks touch pad is "multi touch", i.e. it supports gestures (just apple are not happy to give it to you on their OS other than two finger scroll/right-click) - linux users can enable it using the standard synaptic drivers.

- Modestexcuse, on 05/09/2008, -8/+11I would buy one because of how light they are. I am "that" salesman that packs his laptop every dang place I go.
- 4LeggedtriPod, on 05/09/2008, -6/+9I actually prefer the Macbook over the Air and the Pro. Looks wise.
- Raptor007, on 05/09/2008, -1/+19It looks wise?
- yeskia, on 05/10/2008, -1/+3Apparently so.
- redwallhp, on 05/10/2008, -0/+1I think he meant "look-wise."
- Raptor007, on 05/09/2008, -1/+19It looks wise?
- FoxOrian, on 05/09/2008, -1/+8The only real pro that I tend to find with the Air is it's hands-down better screen than the MacBook. In comparison, the MacBook is a bit dim and has terrible color accuracy. The Air is more along the lines of the screens found on Pro's.
Other than that, I guess some people would just choose their Air because of their strangely specific tastes and requirements.- gutistg, on 05/10/2008, -1/+2About the screen thing: So buy a Macbook Pro.
About the strange requirements: What sorts of requirements? I can't think of any.- cthellis, on 05/10/2008, -0/+1I think he basically means "it MUST be thin and/or very light, but I MUST have a full-size keyboard and screen which would exclude other ultra-portable designs!"
Unless thinness or weight is of paramount importance, the MacBook would serve you better and cheaper, and unless you NEED the larger screen and keyboard (or OS X), you'd have any number of other laptop PC's to choose from and customize closer to your requirements and comfortable pricing.
- cthellis, on 05/10/2008, -0/+1I think he basically means "it MUST be thin and/or very light, but I MUST have a full-size keyboard and screen which would exclude other ultra-portable designs!"
- gutistg, on 05/10/2008, -1/+2About the screen thing: So buy a Macbook Pro.
- pazimzadeh, on 05/09/2008, -6/+16um let's see...it's a lot thinner and lighter
- starkruzr, on 05/10/2008, -0/+3Weight is the only legitimate aspect here.
The damn thing's footprint is bigger than the Macbook. "Thin" buys you absolutely nothing in terms of portability, it just looks cool. - mrASSMAN, on 05/10/2008, -0/+1Seriously, I don't understand how geeks (besides myself) have such a hard time understanding this. People want thin & light laptops, it's just the convenience and ability to take it anywhere. It's like asking why someone would want to buy an LCD screen over a superior CRT screen.. geeks at the time couldn't seem to understand the convenience factor. The macbook air is perfect for travelers and school use. I own a 17" HP laptop and it's a fantastic desktop replacement but it's somewhat difficult to bring to class.. I'd love to have the Air because it's form factor would be perfect for those needs. Yes, I'd rather own an Air than a spec-wise superior macbook.
Also, the Japanese will be buying this laptop up like crazy because they're obsessed with thinness.
- starkruzr, on 05/10/2008, -0/+3Weight is the only legitimate aspect here.
- drastik21, on 05/09/2008, -12/+12I don't understood why anyone would pick a Macbook over the MacbookPro
- ShogunWarPig, on 05/10/2008, -5/+7Are you serious?
- innovaciones, on 05/10/2008, -1/+7Cause is cheaper?
- Magnus150, on 05/10/2008, -2/+7Less expensive, smaller form factor, looks nicer (at least to me), and its specs generally do what the people that are looking for a mac want.
I didn't buy one though, I needed a dedicated video card and the MBP is too expensive for my blood. Got a comparable windows machine for less. - macbookbill, on 05/10/2008, -0/+3I can think of about 1500.
- redwallhp, on 05/10/2008, -0/+2The same reason I got the MacBook. It was cheaper, and it's smaller.
- drastik21, on 05/12/2008, -0/+1LOL you guys are all Mac Book users. If I were to make an expensive purchase for a good computer, I would of at least gone the route of the Mac book PRO. Mac Books are obsolete much quicker.
- xsquirrel378x, on 05/09/2008, -16/+13i dont understand why anyone would pick a macbook
- Modestexcuse, on 05/09/2008, -12/+3See 4 comments above. (Looks)
- redwallhp, on 05/10/2008, -3/+1Have you ever been to Apple.com? MacBook != MacBook Air. You have the MacBook, the MacBook Air, and the MacBook Pro.
- OneAndOnlySnob, on 05/09/2008, -1/+42You're thinking too much. Just click the button and enter your credit card info.
- Radan, on 05/09/2008, -6/+29I seriously can't understand all the Macbook Air hate that has been going around. It is not a computer made for everyone; not everyone has a need of a super thin computer at the cost of ports and performance, but that doesn't mean it's useless. It's like claiming the iMac is worthless as you as it doesn't fit in your rucksack.
For someone who travels alot, and who only wants to bring one bag of hand luggage, the difference between a Macbook and a Macbook Air is HUGE (it's a typical computer that you really need to hold in your hand to get a grasp of how incredibly small it is).
Now, this is starting to sound more and more as an Apple sponsored advertisement, so I'd like to end with admitting that the Air obviously got a very slim (no pun intended) target group, but it do exist. If anything the Air is a great piece of technology.- Kingoftherings, on 05/09/2008, -8/+11The Asus EEE PC is maybe a little thicker, but has much less surface area (and volume) overall, and its only $400!
The Macbook Air is way too wide to be ultra portable, and it looks like it'd snap in half if you look at it wrong.- TomKarpik, on 05/09/2008, -7/+15And the EEE PC is also 10x more useless. I'm not going to go into detailed spec comparisons ... but seriously -- try running OS X, XP, and a 1 GB-of-memory-allocated process of Photoshop on the EEE PC at the same time, and using it all comfortably. If the tiny-ass keyboard doesn't give you witch-claw, you'll fossilize waiting for it to finish switching windows.
- Kingoftherings, on 05/10/2008, -1/+6Why would you be running OS X, XP and Photoshop on an EEE PC? For starters it uses Linux, and I'm not sure why you'd run Photoshop on such a small screen anyway, as the EEE PC isn't really meant for that.
- TomKarpik, on 05/10/2008, -3/+2Because you just alluded to the EEE PC being better than a MBA. You can't have your cake and eat it too.
- ikkefc3, on 05/10/2008, -1/+1Wow, you fossilize fast, even with 512MB of ram (and not 1 or 2GB) I can easily run Windows and BSD at the same time and watch 2 movies, try that on 1/3 macbook, I think that won't boot.
- Radan, on 05/10/2008, -4/+9Yes, now I do think the EEE PC is a great computer too, but there are a couple of factors that plays in favour for the Air.
First of all, the Air is faster which means that you can actually get some work done on it even though you still might not want to Max out the settings on Crysis on it.
Secondly, the dimensions of the computer is actually one of its greatest features. Even though the EEE is in total smaller, the width of the computer doesn't really matter (note again that I'm now only talking about my personal experience) because it will still pretty much fill out the entire width of the bag anyway (you can't for example fit in a book in the empty space). However, the thinness of the computer is another matter. If the computer is thinner, you will be able to stack more similar shaped things in the bag. (compare it with how much space a regular block takes up in a normal bag with a soda can)
Also, with that said the bigger display is too a very convenient feature, together with other stuff like the illuminated keyboard, faster Wifi and bluetooth.
Lastly, and maybe the most important thing is that it runs Mac OS X. While this might be seen as both a bad and a good thing depending on who you ask, but nevertheless if you want a Mac (not counting Hackingtoshs) this is the computer you have to buy.
Also, I do admit that the fact that the Macbook Air looks better than the EEE does matter :P
Though, an integrated card-reader and more ports would be nice though.- Kingoftherings, on 05/10/2008, -5/+2Yeah, bigger screens are generally better, so I guess the Macbook wins this one. :P
But the EEE PC runs Linux, so performance is pretty much a non-issue. And I think if you're a traveling salesman, you're not going to need to run something really intensive like Photoshop, AutoCAD, etc. - TomKarpik, on 05/10/2008, -0/+3I'm not a "travelling salesman" and yet I use my MBA for everything -- including the above.
- Kingoftherings, on 05/10/2008, -5/+2Yeah, bigger screens are generally better, so I guess the Macbook wins this one. :P
- mrASSMAN, on 05/10/2008, -0/+2Yeah, the EEE laptop is pretty poor. Might as well get one of those cheaper 1-laptop-per-child notebooks if you want something like that.
- TomKarpik, on 05/09/2008, -7/+15And the EEE PC is also 10x more useless.
- mrASSMAN, on 05/10/2008, -0/+3I've been saying the precisely same thing.. people tend to become idiotic when popular opinion spreads in groups. How hard is it to understand that laptop models are geared toward separate markets? The Air is not meant to replace the original macbook. It truly is a marvel in engineering and a remarkable showcase of innovation. The macbook on the other hand is just like any other laptop except that it has the magsafe and motion detector.
And really.. optical drives are becoming less necessary every year. I could easily do without one in a laptop. - jaundiced, on 05/10/2008, -2/+1BS the difference is huge. maybe if you have the frame of a 10 year old... but we're talking a pound at most, gimme a break :P lovely seeing yuppies justify their purchases.. or try to.
You're also losing a lot with the reduction in size...
- Kingoftherings, on 05/09/2008, -8/+11The Asus EEE PC is maybe a little thicker, but has much less surface area (and volume) overall, and its only $400!
- diggimator, on 05/10/2008, -7/+9Why Air is better? One word: weight. It's 3 pounds as opposed to the MacBook's 5 pounds. That's why it's called MacBook Air and not MacBook Thin. The video is right in that thinness is impressive, but in the end it shouldn't really matter. For example, I don't need an iPod nano because my iPod classic is definitely small enough. As long as they're smaller than CD players and can fit in my pocket, I'm cool with it.
- ruz322, on 05/10/2008, -1/+2The only actual reason I might have even considered it when I was in the market for a laptop was the solid state drive version which currently costs 3,000.....
- Wakuko, on 05/10/2008, -3/+3My sis got a Macbook Air last week and lemme tellya, it is the most beautiful laptop evah!
Now I am beggin Steve Jobs to come up with a Macbook Nano, same as the Air but 9" only and in colors!
You thought the eeepc was good?
Wait for the Macbook Nano for only $999!- Ocelot13, on 05/10/2008, -1/+4no... its still an apple product. minimum price of $1499
- iChainsaw, on 05/10/2008, -1/+3I was baffled too...but then I thought of: "Hay daddy! My books are oh so heavy this year in college! This laptop is sooooo cute, and it's like not heavy or whatever! Gimme gimme gimme!"
- uziko, on 05/10/2008, -3/+2it's thinner and lighter, and the whole point of a laptop is for portability, smaller size and weight makes it more portable.
get it? kthxbye - smashingmonkey, on 05/10/2008, -0/+3It's one thing not to want one yourself, but if you can't imagine why someone would chose it, then you simply lack imagination. It's not for me either, but for someone who travels a lot and can afford it, it's probably a godsend. It's a great deal more portable.
Before you dig me down, as yourself if it's selling. Yes it is, so the failure isn't in the Air, it's in your ability to imagine who would want it.
- frooo, on 05/09/2008, -7/+53The same reason that people buy bottled water that costs $40-$60 for 750ml ..... because they can.

- mywhitenoise, on 05/09/2008, -28/+7I've stuck bulkier laptops in manila folders. I don't know why Apple uses that as their main clutch for the Air, it's retarded. In fact, why would you even put a laptop in a manila folder? It's not like those things have handles, or offer any kind of protection.
- mhender, on 05/09/2008, -4/+54You can't call something retarded after you've admitted to stuffing a manila folder with a laptop. .

- over900000, on 05/09/2008, -5/+10The lenovo isn't beautiful. It's handsome. Understated handsomeness is the best.
- BlitzInferno, on 05/10/2008, -5/+3It also runs linux.

- Radan, on 05/10/2008, -0/+6Nah, while I'm the one who usually tries to defend all of Apple's decisions like a good little fanboy (including the Air), I still think this video was pretty entertaining ;)

- jabberwolf, on 05/09/2008, -9/+3I dont get it.
Sony had this thing 4-5 years ago, was nice, but for the extra 1/2 or so, you got a hell of alot more!- cthellis, on 05/10/2008, -2/+3Which one? Most of the comparatively-thin-and-light Vaios never had full-size screens or keyboards, had worse battery life, were far less comparatively powerful for their time period, and cost more. Even their smallest TZ-series laptops NOW don't look as good in comparison.
I'll assume you're probably referring to the x505, though, since that's the one most people bring up, as it's the closest style match and "strikingness" for the times. It was certainly gorgeous, and thin, and had a 10.4" screen, and a tight keyboard, and was underpowered, and had a 3-hour battery life, and no built-in ROM drive, and was $3,000...
Gave you a helluva lot more, all right!
- cthellis, on 05/10/2008, -2/+3Which one? - alexpigment, on 05/09/2008, -7/+42I'm glad finally someone agrees with me here. If i requires stripping all useful ports from my system and limiting the processor speed, it's TOO THIN. love my macbook and wouldn't trade it for an Air. Besides when has VERTICAL space ever been an issue for anyone. It still takes up the same space on your desk
- nerdtron, on 05/09/2008, -5/+4seriously. of all the dimensions a laptop can have, thinness is far and away the least important (i think). i have a 12" iBook- the thing is an inch and a half thick, but it's also pretty much the same length and hight as a sheet of paper which makes it really easy to carry around with binders and clipboards etc. I'd way rather have a 1" thick laptop that still had an optical drive, a bunch of ports, and a user-replaceable battery.
- jlnr, on 05/09/2008, -1/+6Lots of people agree with you, that's why Apple didn't discontinue the MacBook. Different target audiences, different products. No idea where the sudden confusion comes from, the iPods and basically every other product line use the same concept.
- bpapa, on 05/10/2008, -1/+3Then don't buy one. It wasn't made to please every person.
- Radan, on 05/10/2008, -1/+4Well, the Air was never made as a replacement for the Macbook, nor does it even have the same target audience. It's a computer made to take up as little space in your bag as possible, whereas the thickness of the computer is the most important factor there.
- cthellis, on 05/10/2008, -1/+3"Besides when has VERTICAL space ever been an issue for anyone."
Carrying convenience. Just when does desk space really matter other than in airplanes? Meanwhile, you're trading perpetual ease of typing for it.

We've gotten to the point where no one uses them except to install, rip, or burn things, so why not relegate it to being a USB device like Flash memory drives? Anecdotally, I use my optical drive for about one hour a month, and all of my friends are the same way.
Especially with the Digg crowd. Most of us have 2-4 computers for various reasons. Is there any practical reason to have 2-4 embedded drives in our house instead of just having one shared USB DVD drive?- OrangeSoda31, on 05/11/2008, -1/+1I don't want to have to go get my cd drive every time I need to use it. Maybe, just maybe, I don't like walking to the other side of the house to put a cd into a shared drive that just might not authenticate the cd correctly over the network. Or, perhaps, on rare occasion more than one person might want to use said drive (what a bizarre circumstance that would be! Imagine!)

- threemagic, on 05/09/2008, -1/+1I remember when we all said that about the cube...
- trogdoor, on 05/09/2008, -0/+3After seeing low profits, Apple attempted to increase sales by bundling more software with the Cube, lowering the price of the base model, incorporating a CD-RW drive standard for the 500 MHz version, and offering an improved NVIDIA graphics card as an option. These efforts could not offset the earlier perception of reduced value compared to the iMac and Power Mac G4 lineup. In July 2001 Apple issued a short and slightly unusual press release announcing the product was to be put "on ice."

- cthellis, on 05/10/2008, -1/+3It's over-exaggeration, sure, but then so is every "you could just buy XXX, it's exactly the same!!" post.
"Being thin enough to fit in a manila envelope" is a mockable purchase characteristic, but that doesn't mean you're getting the same kind of machine.- MattBD, on 05/10/2008, -0/+1It does depend what you want it for. An Eee is a great machine for if you just want to do a little light browsing and read your email. And it's pretty fast too - the IceWM desktop is very lightweight. I can get Firefox up and running a lot faster on that than I can on my Dual-Core Philips with 2GB RAM.
- bxblox, on 05/10/2008, -0/+3over-exaggeration is an exaggeration
- cthellis, on 05/10/2008, -1/+1Congratulations! You know a word definition!
- OrangeSoda31, on 05/11/2008, -1/+2Self definition is the use of the word you are trying to define in the definition.
@cthellis: I don't think he really knows how to define a word... - bxblox, on 05/11/2008, -1/+1@ cthellis: Congratulations, you do not know a word definition!
@ OrangeSoda31: You need to stop sucking cthellis ass. I was highlighting that he is referring to an exaggeration as an "over-exaggeration" which is an exaggeration itself. An orange is orange is not self-defining it is descriptive. "Over-exaggeration" is redundant because the word exaggeration already defines it as an overstatement. It's no better that saying you want a "more bigger" pie Maybe you should think "more longer" before commenting. Moron....
- mrASSMAN, on 05/10/2008, -1/+1Decently fast compared to an Apple IIe running Vista..
