The park I frequent the most doesn't have a fountain. I really don't think I need to justify my purchase of water, or anything for that mater. The most popular brands--Dasani and Aquafina--are indeed RO'd, which has consistently been shown to not be measurably healthier than tap water; do you actually think the "enhanced detoxification" of RO'd can or has been measured, and actually has an affect outside of a margin of error?

            Basically, you're gaining effectively nothing unless your township's water itself has problems, at which point you'd still be looking for a water softener/house filtration system anyway, because you'd rather not be using that same water for your dishes, for showers and bathing, etc.

    • FoxOrian, on 05/09/2008, -1/+8The only real pro that I tend to find with the Air is it's hands-down better screen than the MacBook. In comparison, the MacBook is a bit dim and has terrible color accuracy. The Air is more along the lines of the screens found on Pro's.

      Other than that, I guess some people would just choose their Air because of their strangely specific tastes and requirements.

          Unless thinness or weight is of paramount importance, the MacBook would serve you better and cheaper, and unless you NEED the larger screen and keyboard (or OS X), you'd have any number of other laptop PC's to choose from and customize closer to your requirements and comfortable pricing.

The macbook air is perfect for travelers and school use. I own a 17" HP laptop and it's a fantastic desktop replacement but it's somewhat difficult to bring to class.. I'd love to have the Air because it's form factor would be perfect for those needs. Yes, I'd rather own an Air than a spec-wise superior macbook.

        Also, the Japanese will be buying this laptop up like crazy because they're obsessed with thinness.

It is not a computer made for everyone; not everyone has a need of a super thin computer at the cost of ports and performance, but that doesn't mean it's useless. It's like claiming the iMac is worthless as you as it doesn't fit in your rucksack.

      For someone who travels alot, and who only wants to bring one bag of hand luggage, the difference between a Macbook and a Macbook Air is HUGE (it's a typical computer that you really need to hold in your hand to get a grasp of how incredibly small it is).

      Now, this is starting to sound more and more as an Apple sponsored advertisement, so I'd like to end with admitting that the Air obviously got a very slim (no pun intended) target group, but it do exist. If anything the Air is a great piece of technology.

        The Macbook Air is way too wide to be ultra portable, and it looks like it'd snap in half if you look at it wrong.

I'm not going to go into detailed spec comparisons ... but seriously -- try running OS X, XP, and a 1 GB-of-memory-allocated process of Photoshop on the EEE PC at the same time, and using it all comfortably. If the tiny-ass keyboard doesn't give you witch-claw, you'll fossilize waiting for it to finish switching windows.

        • Radan, on 05/10/2008, -4/+9Yes, now I do think the EEE PC is a great computer too, but there are a couple of factors that plays in favour for the Air.

          First of all, the Air is faster which means that you can actually get some work done on it even though you still might not want to Max out the settings on Crysis on it.

          Secondly, the dimensions of the computer is actually one of its greatest features. Even though the EEE is in total smaller, the width of the computer doesn't really matter (note again that I'm now only talking about my personal experience) because it will still pretty much fill out the entire width of the bag anyway (you can't for example fit in a book in the empty space). However, the thinness of the computer is another matter. If the computer is thinner, you will be able to stack more similar shaped things in the bag. (compare it with how much space a regular block takes up in a normal bag with a soda can)

          Also, with that said the bigger display is too a very convenient feature, together with other stuff like the illuminated keyboard, faster Wifi and bluetooth.

          Lastly, and maybe the most important thing is that it runs Mac OS X. While this might be seen as both a bad and a good thing depending on who you ask, but nevertheless if you want a Mac (not counting Hackingtoshs) this is the computer you have to buy.

          Also, I do admit that the fact that the Macbook Air looks better than the EEE does matter :P

          Though, an integrated card-reader and more ports would be nice though.

            But the EEE PC runs Linux, so performance is pretty much a non-issue. And I think if you're a traveling salesman, you're not going to need to run something really intensive like Photoshop, AutoCAD, etc.

How hard is it to understand that laptop models are geared toward separate markets? The Air is not meant to replace the original macbook. It truly is a marvel in engineering and a remarkable showcase of innovation. The macbook on the other hand is just like any other laptop except that it has the magsafe and motion detector.

        And really.. optical drives are becoming less necessary every year. I could easily do without one in a laptop.

The video is right in that thinness is impressive, but in the end it shouldn't really matter. For example, I don't need an iPod nano because my iPod classic is definitely small enough. As long as they're smaller than CD players and can fit in my pocket, I'm cool with it.

Most of the comparatively-thin-and-light Vaios never had full-size screens or keyboards, had worse battery life, were far less comparatively powerful for their time period, and cost more. Even their smallest TZ-series laptops NOW don't look as good in comparison.

      I'll assume you're probably referring to the x505, though, since that's the one most people bring up, as it's the closest style match and "strikingness" for the times. It was certainly gorgeous, and thin, and had a 10.4" screen, and a tight keyboard, and was underpowered, and had a 3-hour battery life, and no built-in ROM drive, and was $3,000...

      Gave you a helluva lot more, all right!

If i requires stripping all useful ports from my system and limiting the processor speed, it's TOO THIN. love my macbook and wouldn't trade it for an Air.     • nerdtron, on 05/09/2008, -5/+4seriously. of all the dimensions a laptop can have, thinness is far and away the least important (i think). i have a 12" iBook- the thing is an inch and a half thick, but it's also pretty much the same length and hight as a sheet of paper which makes it really easy to carry around with binders and clipboards etc. I'd way rather have a 1" thick laptop that still had an optical drive, a bunch of ports, and a user-replaceable battery.

We've gotten to the point where no one uses them except to install, rip, or burn things, so why not relegate it to being a USB device like Flash memory drives? Anecdotally, I use my optical drive for about one hour a month, and all of my friends are the same way.

      Especially with the Digg crowd. Most of us have 2-4 computers for various reasons. Is there any practical reason to have 2-4 embedded drives in our house instead of just having one shared USB DVD drive?

Maybe, just maybe, I don't like walking to the other side of the house to put a cd into a shared drive that just might not authenticate the cd correctly over the network. And it's pretty fast too - the IceWM desktop is very lightweight. I can get Firefox up and running a lot faster on that than I can on my Dual-Core Philips with 2GB RAM.
