- selectodude, on 10/12/2007, -3/+26Awesome.
- andrew.bell, on 10/12/2007, -4/+21I can stream HD within my place using 802.11G. It sucks when you actually have to transfer the files, but I usually just stream videos.
- r2builder, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14@exobyte "802.11g is already faster than broadband"
the reason they're working on 802.11n is to transfer files faster between machines - or between a computer & the iTV for example. 802.11g would be too slow to stream HD content wirelessly. - maclive, on 10/12/2007, -6/+16Bonus!
- deadbaby, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10Don't worry about it. All the pre-draft standards agree on the basics: 2.4/5Ghz MIMO. It's too late in the game to change that -- the rest of the spec can be controlled by software. The real risk would be that the industry simply skips 802.11N and moves onto an entirely different spec.
- zodo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12My question is this: How likely is it that these draft-n cards are going to be compatible with the final spec? Is there a possibility that even with a firmware upgrade, they won't meet the standard? (This question could even apply to other manufacturers draft-n cards.)
- thehumangame, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9@spiffyfitz
Apple has to charge tax because they have a retail outlet in your state. You have to charge tax in a state if you have a business presence in that state... that's why it sucks to live in CA, lots of technology mail-order businesses are based there so CA-people have to pay tax on their Newegg orders and the like. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -6/+13Why digg down andrew.bell? He is telling the truth. I can stream HD h.264 just fine. Digg is weird.
- ZaNkY, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Apple is a pretty good at what it does. Even though the card is "draft", they put the card in because they are more than 80% sure that it will be close to Final ver. I highly doubt that Apple would throw in random hardware just for the fun of it. What does Apple know that we don't? Probably a nice amount...... When N goes final, they're just gonna firmware flash it and everything will be cool :)
- mateo60, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7"Apple just needs to update their MacBook line with the Core 2 Duo and these wireless cards and im sold!"
Sounds like you want a Macbook Pro. They won't be updating the Macbook line with Core2 processors anytime soon. - sfgeek, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6exobyte: We need 802.11n more for doing things like sending video to iTV, not download speeds. Also, it's a nice bonus for corporate networks. Problem is the VPN encryption most companies require is a CPU bottleneck.
- r2builder, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7I dunno, they're there for a reason. I mean, if they weren't going to be compatible - would apple include them? It's good to know that apple is doing everything it can to make these new MBPs as "future-proof" as possible.
- exobyte, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8Yes. It's a draft. They can change some pretty big things (frequency, even). I won't buy any standalone draft n product. I'm not sure why consumers do. 802.11g is already faster than broadband and close enough to normal hard disk speeds. At least for the average consumer, g is cheap and proven, stick with it. In this case, early adopters are going too far.
- JackAxe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Apple has done things like this in the past and will generally unlock the feature later on. For example, they offered firmware updates that boosted the optical-drive's speed on earlier Aluminum PBs..
But of course for my G5, which shipped with a DL drive, a Pioneer DVR-108, Apple never unlocked its DL capability. When my system was released, Tiger with its support for DL-burrning was not yet available, and when it was finally released, the latest G5s really had nothing new to offer, just a DL-drive upgrade and minor speed-bump. So they never bothered to unlock my drive.
Anyway, I took this route and uncrippled it myself;
http://www.xlr8yourmac.com/tips/FlashingDVR-117guide.html
So even if Apple doesn't unlock it, I'm sure a hack will be available.
rambles. - diggnationdevon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Well, I guess it's not a secret now : )
- dbxz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2heh mee too I just picked one up with the Student Developer hardware discount =)
normal price: $2799.00 CAD
student discount: $2599.00 CAD
student developer discount: $2239.00 CAD
its a great deal and now that i know it has a draft1 n card in it too im left with a big =D - kennyboy019, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5Man, thats sweet.
I just bought a new MacBook Pro!
Student discount FTW!! - streak, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2If Apple doesn't advertise it as 802.11n, then don't count on it. It's like the old adage about software: don't buy it on promises, buy it on its current capabilities. And in this case, Apple isn't even promising anything. The old MacBooks and MacBookPros have 802.11a capability -- which Apple provided to developers at the World Wide Developer Conference this year -- but Apple doesn't support it as a product. The 802.11n specification could easily change in a way that the current hardware can not support or that Apple won't invest the effort in supporting. It's also to Apple's advantage to coerce consumers to buy a new laptop to get 802.11n after the specification is ratified, by not supporting 802.11n on earlier hardware.

"I hate it when people whine about being dugg down. It's just a stupid website. Who cares."
and so to fix the whining, you *hate* so much, you whine about whining...
if you get dugg down your comment does not show and obviosly people want their comments to show other wise why would they leave a comment in the first place. - hayden.evans, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2actually i think all macbook pros and macbooks have them because the airport cards in all intel machines core duo and core 2 duo have the necessary antennas for n.
- anonym41414, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Apple needed a good way to justify the nearly thousand-dollar price difference between the MacBook and the MacBook Pro. A bigger screen and better graphics weren't enough. So the MBPs get 64-bit processors that can handle more than 2 GB of RAM (and that are also presumably faster, but whatever, most interactive tasks are I/O bound already), while the MBs keep their 32-bit processors and lower memory ceiling.
- brendanc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Awesome, Just got my MBP.
Oh yeah and it came straight from China - exobyte, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3@r2builder
MPEG2 HD, is too high bandwidth, yes. MPEG4, no. (Actually, 802.11g can barely sustain a HD MPEG2 stream).
The other issue here is do we need it 802.11n now? No, not for a few years.
Regarding iTV, streaming media wirelessly from a laptop is a bad idea. If it's HD, play the original source (integrated HD disc player), if it's iTunes, stream from the internet (again, bandwidth).
@sfgeek Corporate benefit: you say yes, but failed to back it up with any real use. - quazywabbit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@lrdntwnd
While I completly agree that you are still supposed to pay taxes on those items most people do not which is why some states are/have trying to pass laws stating that online/catalog orders must charge state/local taxes. - lrdntwnd, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3@spiffyfitz
While Amazon may not charge you sales tax, some states (I know Ohio is one of them as I live there, but I assume other states have similar laws) require you to pay state sales tax, when you file your income taxes, on purchases made online. So, you aren't really saving, you're just putting off the inevitable. - mateo60, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It'll always be a generation behind the Pro model to justify the extra $1000.
- spiffyfitz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@everyone
I know how sales tax works, it's just better for some people to shop on Amazon than others. If you live in a state that has an Amazon outlet in it, you're probably much better off buying directly from Apple. - Burritovision, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1i doubt this card is dormant.
and digg, i comment a lot. i want to be able to and not get some hoo-hah about commenting too much. stop that. - tagliare, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"How likely is it that these draft-n cards are going to be compatible with the final spec?"
Well, that's why apple is including it as a hidden feature. If it happens not to be compatible... they never mention it again. If yes, then they'll *surprise* MBP users when iTV comes out. - morecowbell77, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0mateo, they will update the regular Macbook's to Core 2 Duo's by the end of the year
- DanmanD87, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1I know that I get 108mbps with my rangemax and my first gen MBP when I am in windows.
- awilke, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2It's because ITV will support 802.11n
- answr42, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0@anonym
Granted, but they will have to update them by spring of 2007 in oder to fully use the 64 bit capabilities of leopard (assuming that leopard comes out in the spring) - answr42, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0@mateo
I have at least another 6 months to wait until i get my laptop for college, so the time that it takes for apple to update their MacBooks is irrelevent to me. But none the less it would still be good for them to put in the new technology. BTW, i would get a MacBook Pro but they are just a bit too expensive for me! - spiffyfitz, on 10/12/2007, -6/+3My gripe about the student discount is that Apple still charges tax.
In my state (NY), Amazon doesn't charge tax, and without the tax, most Macs end up being cheaper from Amazon. - Aggiemaster, on 10/12/2007, -8/+2tell me you are joking....right?
- answr42, on 10/12/2007, -11/+2I kinda expected this to happen ever since it was discovered that the new iMacs had the draft 802.11n cards in them! Now Apple just needs to update their MacBook line with the Core 2 Duo and these wireless cards and im sold!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -22/+7I hate it when people whine about being dugg down. It's just a stupid website. Who cares.
