- awoodhouse, on 10/12/2007, -3/+29Wouldn't it be easier to just have an external USB device?????????
- caliform, on 10/12/2007, -8/+34You would be better of summing it up as the way to completely disrupt the Macbook Pro's design scheme. God, that looks so immensely awful.
- Zippo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+23That wouldn't have been as geeky.
- fudgebrown, on 10/12/2007, -1/+17Someone buy this guy a real digi-cam.... sheesh.
- jaysi, on 10/12/2007, -3/+16I commend him on the effort, but it really doesn't look that clean of an install.
- pxlpshr, on 09/04/2008, -5/+18but then it's a thinkpad.... dur.
- nullxposur, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12Pimp my Macbook, Season 1! :-
- toaste, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10Looks like they bent the sheet metal of their cheese grater speaker vents when cutting. They could have done a better job with a dremel.
I can appreciate the fact that this person found internal space for it and wiring everything internally, but I'd really like more details into the design process to see if they thought things through or just pulled it off as a quick and dirty hack job. Why did they pull power straight off the motherboard when they could have gotten it from the USB bus? Did they bother cramming a small USB 2.0 hub in there so that they didn't kill one of their ports?
- iSEPIC, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Plus the Thinkpad uses the "more secure" fingerprint reader (sure he could have used it too - and SHOULD HAVE) - the "slit" type where you have to swipe your finger, is far more secure than the pad type he used. The pad types are prone to the "gummybear" attack.
- jtjdt, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Is there any facial recognition software for the Macbook pro? Maybe like a software program that would use iSight to match up the colors and shape of ones face for a quick login.
- mrwags3, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7This is incredible!!!! I really like his sense of ingenuity. However, I would not have used that style of biometrics, because they are not secure at all. They are very well known for hacks as simple as a bag of warmed water to log in as the last user. I would have used the biometric swipe style scanner. Again, I love this idea and I commend him on this endeavor.
- frem001, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6OMG no he didn't. don't they make any that come in silver or is that specific material necessary. I just would be able to do that to my machine. If i had to put it somewhere i'd put it on the corner along the right hand side (since i'm right handed) where the ports are... or hide it in my express card slot (make it like a cd tray that pops open).
- bigkm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4even painting the outside of the scanner before installing would of made it look a lot cleaner.
- ddfall, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3You'd almost think he would have been better off with a mirror and the built in camera on the MacBook Pro than the camera he has. Makes me think back to the bird in a box on Flintstones Cartoon. lol. I think it's more of a proof of concept thing but if Apple wants to incorporate security, why not do some sort of retina (eye) scanner by using the iSight that's built in. No extra ugly anything plus that's just absurdly cool if they could do that or facial recognition or something.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Great Idea but not really neatly done! If I would do something like this which I think its not really practical I would first try it on something else and when I know I can do it neatly I would go ahead and do it.
DAMN. I have a mac book pro right now and I am typing with it and I feel it hurts to see if mine would turn out like his. I love my macbook pro I love it. Best laptop ever. Best Product ever! - GirSaysDoom13, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Unless he was running windows, how could he use it? There isn't any fingerprint recognition software on the mac is there?
- ravuya, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5Nice job, though I would've been a bit more careful than to put it in the speaker grille; if you put it somewhere off the side of the left wristrest it looks like it's better reinforced and is closer to the USB headers anyway.
- Terc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"Article on how a guy used a dremmel, a Sony Puppy FIU-600 and some skill to install a finger print scanner in his 2.16 Ghz MacBook Pro"
What skill? I'm seeing no skill. He scuffed the hell out of the speaker grill and it now looks like crap. - bluehouse, on 10/12/2007, -8/+10Instead of dropping $2500 on a MacBook Pro then hacking it up with a dremel to get a fingerprint reader, just get a ThinkPad. Among others, the X41 tablet and the R51 comes with a fingerprint reader for under $2000. No drilling required!
- planksconstant, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1or you could remove the topic of apple from the types of stories you get on digg, then you won't have any reason to bitch about there being too much apple. ignorance is bliss i always say.
- eliasg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1So let me get this straight... he can afford a MacBook Pro, and he can afford to void the warranty... but he can't afford a better digital camera?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1If he was that insecure of people getting his data he could have just bought a vault or perhaps even the free password Apple gives you
- Urusai, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yes, for instance, I saw a couple of wires soldered to something, but were they power, comms, or what? This writeup is as poor as if somebody touting their system buildup wrote "So like I bought this radical case and put in a sweet motherboard and premo memory."
- Hayl, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4Article should be renamed to "How to ruin a MacBook pro AND void the warranty at the same time"
- computerdude33, on 10/12/2007, -9/+10I've got a better use of his money: a new camera.
- nullxposur, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I can see an informercial coming out... "How to Spend an Arm and Leg and Void your Warranty in Less than 10 minutes!" ....
buy it, pry it, and forget it!
:: the crowd goes wild:: - procdaddy, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4"Article on how a guy used a dremmel, a Sony Puppy FIU-600 and some skill to install a finger print scanner in his 2.16 Ghz MacBook Pro."
Where is PETA on this one? Using puppies to mod MacBook Pro's... I love it! - iSEPIC, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1so then all they have to do is take 3-4 photos of your head, and whola - defeated. I like the blink, smile ideal though.
- freeboarder1402, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1if you make the fingerprint scanner an external device you eliminate the necessity to use it and some of the security that goes with an embedded device
- vdxc, on 09/29/2008, -1/+2which is why on nearly every digg page there is an feed icon.
- cakefart, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1No kidding.
One other thing I didn't get from the article is what is he using to communicate w/OS X's equivalent of PAM? - shiftt, on 11/25/2007, -0/+1http://www.applemacbook.com/mods/get-rid-of-your-m ...
- macman81, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The installation is next to the speaker, not right on it. Did you honestly think that the speakers extend that far across the grill? They're about 1/4 it's size, if that.
Sound output isn't affected at all. - spectre_25gt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Easier for initial installation, maybe. Probably not in the long run.
- kenthorvath, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Why not just use the built-in iSight with some facial recognition code? Does something like this exist?
- sox11, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Idiot
How to redude the re-sell value of your mac, please see attached - stealthboy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Any time you mod a device, the resulting mod should at least be on par with the original design. This guy just hacked up a perfectly beautiful MacBook Pro. He could at least have done a nice job.
Hmm... what's next? A hack saw and sheet metal screws to install some cheap spoiler on a brand new Ferrari? - bigkm, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2@randomsteve
in safari you can put them all in a bookmarks folder in the bookmarks bar and it shows a collaboration of all the feeds.
I'm Sure firefox or something else does this though. - ryyatyk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0No digg. Not enough information given as to how it was done or if it can even interact with the OS
- PathDaemon, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I've been staring at unused spaces on my PowerBook for a while, thinking about having a reader there... but the left pad covers the battery, the right pad covers the optical drive.
This dude is covering his right speaker grille — music's not going to sound very hot anymore. - eyeballkid, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Yeah, the guy did a pretty crappy job
- rthille, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2I would have gone with facial recognition software for the already built in camera. You open the mac, it beeps, you turn your head to the left, it beeps, you turn your head to the right. In the interim it takes about 8 pictures and builds a 3D map of your head (to avoid people using a photo of your head to defeat the system). Maybe you could even have to smile or blink or something for extra security.
- Eccles, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Fingerprint scans are quicker than typing in passwords. I have a scanner hooked up to my Windows PC, with different fingers for different accounts. I can do a fast user switch simply by touching the sensor. I'd really like to have the same for my Mac.
- procdaddy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2what are we storing on computers lately that we need this added security? passwords are enough for me...or maybe i'm just lazy :/ "OMG. MY GF FOUND MY PRON."
- vdxc, on 09/29/2008, -1/+1or you can use a feed reader such as google reader and include mutliple categories which you like.
- fungke, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Freakin' Clown shoes!
- Crypty, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0He did a crappy job and it was a bad idea to begin with, given the disgusting fail rate of mac logic boards in their laptops.
- Ippolito, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Maybe he took them with a nice digital camera but blogspot has a maximum file size. So he had to reduce the quality. And instead of playing with it to get a nice picture with acceptable size he just toned it down as low as he could.
- BlueLampPost, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I don't think you doesn't have to go that far to damaged his MacBook Pro.
Why can you developer a program for the built-in iSight to record your eye gestures and features and retina
to gain access and open documents on your new intel-mac. You know eye scanning. An App that is universal so it can run on your iMac G5 or MacBook or compatible to your External iSight hook up.
Good Idea hey. And need Boot Camp goes out of beta e.g 10.5 the app will support on windows too.
No need for hardware hacking. Anyone support me ? - deepquest, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0isn't it another Photoshop contest? Installing biometric scanner isn't that hard. Main problems are manage the "matcher" making your fingerprint dots recognizable by the OS. It also mean that the used recompile the kernel or created a kernel extension to use the scanner with logging process. And also creating a OSX compliant biometric scanner software to enroll users...
what makes me even more suspicious is that there's no demo of the reader in action. -
