- trogdoor, on 10/12/2007, -5/+35"duh, anything mac related gets modded up to front page. This should be called MacDigg or some *****. This has turned into the mac fanboy club."
Yes, because the people digging this and criticizing Apple are definitely mac fanboys... - swizzcheez, on 10/12/2007, -4/+28"Most people love Apple because they almost never release a product less than excellent."
For what Apple charges for their hardware in contrast to traditional PCs, they should be nothing less than excellent IMHO. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+18Listen to these and say it again that the whine is overstated.

That is unusably annoying. - beta1, on 10/12/2007, -9/+25Most people love Apple because they almost never release a product less than excellent. I would imagine most people complaining are probably life-long Mac users who aren’t used to ANY problems.
I know my MacBook Pro worked great from day one, but if people are having problems I’m happy they aren’t letting anyone get away with mediocre, especially from a company that prides itself on quality, like Apple. - VoraciousPanda, on 10/12/2007, -4/+16So, since your Macbook Pro doesn't whine, somehow that makes the whine of all the other MBP's null and void?
Somehow, I don't follow your logic.
The firmware update doesnt fix the whine. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10I say it again and again.... I use my Computer on my train ride to work.... Apple is telling me I can't use it on my lap.... this is Bull ....Fix the HEAT problem.
- Retrograde, on 10/12/2007, -4/+13Oops, sorry - I just reposted the forum link. The link I meant to post in that first comment is that of their resource page with all the background, etc.
http://whine.osx86project.org/ - gamabunta, on 10/12/2007, -5/+14I called and was told that since they call them "notebooks" now, they aren't meant to be placed in your lap. The guy tried to tell me only ignorant users call them "laptops."
When I brought up that other core duo laptops from different companies don't heat as bad he then told me Apple was the only company that had core duo chips.
Dumbass support. - Retrograde, on 10/12/2007, -6/+15You can keep up with the stories of callers and progress at this forum link:
http://forum.osx86project.org/index.php?showtopic=16296&view=getnewpost
The protest is also being discussed live on irc at irc.osx86project.org #osx86.
The reports coming from callers so far are really interesting - Apple's phone lines are much busier than normal but the techs have mysteriously still "never heard of the problems." Yeah. Right. - tciny, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11MacBooks? I though those didnt have the defect? Wasnt it just the MacBook Pros?
- Technopundit, on 10/12/2007, -4/+10My, from the impression the media gives, I thought all things Apple were perfect in every way!
After all, they have a Big Glass Box!
But seriously, I thought the really big whiners use Linux. - HaroldMGray, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9I'm sure someone high up from Apple looks at digg...
- Cronus6, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6All 6 of them called 45 times each, the same way they post here. :)
- arthurbarnhouse, on 10/12/2007, -11/+16Will "end the Whine day" also be the day I no longer have to listen to people complaining about this?
- Nighthawke, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Apple sure aint ignoring the whine, or the thermal issues. According to a techie that logged on OSx86's forums, their techs are racking up overtime attempting to find solutions. The tech also had mentioned the elevated levels of callers over the perious of two hours equal what they would have gotten on a typical saturday evening. So their grievances are being heard loud and clear. So, i'm assuming that they have placed the issues on the front burners and have them on high heat.
- Gurubanks, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8Not only is it worthless to call into outsourced call centers, its worthless to call into domestic tech services. There is no way apple is clueless about their product defects.
- heydigital, on 10/12/2007, -5/+10Mac claim #1:
"It just works" - kkapoor, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Did you purchase one after the CPU upgrades? Does your serial # begin with W8620....?
- dkm201, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Just about every laptop manufacturer has core duo.
- invisiblesun, on 10/12/2007, -4/+9I'm surprised to see fanboys (for lack of a better word) defending Apple. As an Apple fanboy, myself, I want to see Apple producing the best they possibly can. I would not buy a Macbook or Macbook Pro. Shape up, Apple. Listen to your customers or else you're no better than any of your competitors.
- scarolan, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7I was having the same overheating problem on my Macbook Pro, so I brought it into the store. They will all deny that *anyone* else has come in with this problem. I think corporate told them not to admit that anyone else has had problems with overheating.
Anyway, I had one of the guys at the Genius Bar sit there with me while we ran it for 10 minutes with several video files, photo booth, itunes, etc. all open at the same time. It very quickly got extremely hot to the touch, and my fans did not come on at all. They ordered me a new logic board, new fans and a couple other parts which are being replaced right now, all covered under warranty. The total cost on the invoice that I signed was over $1000, so I can see why they are not eager to admit there's a problem with these units!
If you can prove your fans are not working, you might have better luck. - silent1, on 10/12/2007, -7/+12About as much ass as your written language skills. (Sorry, "you're" skills ...)
- Retrograde, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8The point is to bring attention to the issue. That'll do more than any single call.
- Retrograde, on 10/12/2007, -5/+9"MacBooks? I though those didnt have the defect? Wasnt it just the MacBook Pros?"
Both have quality problems (from reports that are coming in), although it's mostly the MacBook Pros. At this point it's the "MacBook" family even if one has the "Pro" tacked onto the end... that's why I used it on this digg. Much easier than saying "Macbook and MacBook Pro."
Same genus, different species I guess. :) - AhmedB, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6What about the overheating and temperatures on the Macbooks? My laptop normally runs at 63-65 C for the CPU and around 45 C for the hard drive and the heat from the HD finds its way to the area beside the trackpad which drives me crazy at times (not to mention that it gets very unbearable if I have it in my lap!), do these have similar heating/heat dissipation issues? I want to buy a 'cool' laptop noting that it's my 'main' computer and is normally used for prolonged periods of time.
Oh and I thought I would add my 2 cents regarding the whine, my laptop is a Gateway 2.0 GHz Centrino, I got a piece of software the other day that controls the cpu speed and such, if I throttle the CPU at 2.0 GHz (top speed) strangely there's a whine that comes from the laptop, and it's pretty noticeable, and I would say annoying with prolonged use, had to switch it back to dynamic switching of CPU speed. So apparently it's something from several Intel CPU generations (but that's just my analysis, it might be something on the motherboard too) - PathDaemon, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Hey, your comments are still there. The user comment moderation system just exists to hide-by-default comments that the community agrees are crap. Say what you want, we don't have to listen.
We don't want to listen to you complaining about "pansy ass" "Mac Freaks" with a "black turtleneck god." It has nothing to do with fanboys crushing opposition, it's people capable of intelligent speech sweeping out asses like you. - Zippo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5I seriously doubt Apple is ignoring this problem... it would be really stupid and very un-Apple-like. I'd say they're working on it, but it's not a high priority and they're being quiet (as usual)
- Durrok, on 10/12/2007, -5/+9It's cute you think that the people you are calling actually work for apple.
If you have ever worked at a callcenter that was outsourced you know as well as I do that this will do nothing. Sending written mail to important people in apple all on the same day would have been more effective and they might have actually heard about this. - Magnitude, on 10/12/2007, -5/+9I've got a MBP - the whine issue is overstated.
Haven't we heard all of this before, with the release of any new Mac product?
Does anyone remember the 'Mac Product Cycle'? See http://www.misterbg.org/AppleProductCycle/
Quote: "A minor, rarely occurring flaw in the device begins to be discussed in the Apple support forums. Whiny, artistic types post lengthy diatribes about how this terrible design flaw has made the device unusable and scarred them emotionally. Electronic petitions are created demanding that Apple replace the devices for free, plus pay for counseling to help traumatized users overcome their emotional distress".
- osbjmg, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7Exactly, especially from Apple. They have done it to me twice. As a rule, Apple early adopters get screwed.
- AhmedB, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7I know Macbook Pros have the whine, are Macbooks plagued too???!!! I was planning on buying one!
- anjinash, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Paying customers should not be considered beta testers. Apple should be beta testing their products themselves. If Microsoft pulled that kind of crap a lot of people would probably crucify Bill Gates in the streets of Redmond.
- anjinash, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5It just works... at seperating you from your money.
- vonskippy, on 10/12/2007, -5/+8Good job Mac Freaks - lets ***** all over free speech and mod down whatever comment offends your pansy ass feelings.
- tciny, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5The reviews so far stated that that's not the case. MacBook Pro only issue... even there just for some as it seems.
- jmazzi, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I called and went through some general troubleshooting etc. after all that he identified the problem as a known issue with the cpu making a "buzzing noise". he said they are working on it and are not sure what makes the buzz exactly (as in what causes it to make the noise). I asked if there is a list to be notified when there is a fix. he said if its something a firmware/software can fix, then it will be pushed out in an update. he said to call back in a month to get an update on it if i don't see a firmware/software update to fix it.
- sjstclair, on 10/12/2007, -6/+8Well, thats what you get for getting the very first version of a new product.
- silent1, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6That's mostly in reference to the operating system. I'm *not* an Apple apologist. In realistic terms they have problems (hardware as well as software) just like any other. As an authoritative and long-established source (measured in decades) on a variety of platforms, however, I can say that I prefer Macs because - as a whole - they *are* a better, more reliable product.
- Retrograde, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4See my reply to the distinction above. Check the Apple forums and a few other revews for evidence of the same problems with MacBooks.
http://www.notebookreview.com/default.asp?newsID=2946&review=Apple+MacBook - gamerzworld, on 10/12/2007, -5/+7I was about to buy a MBP but if Apple can't fix there problems, I'm taking my money some where else.
- Sandwiches_Time, on 10/12/2007, -8/+10Big difference between Macbook and Macbook Pro...
- nickganga, on 10/12/2007, -7/+9I wonder how many people have called apple
- cakeofd00m, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4I have a Macbook, and the only time I noticed a whine was from going from strenuous tasks to, easier tasks. It only lasts about 10 minutes, and is fine. I expect it to be fixxed in the next firmware update.
- rushfan, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4I'm going to ask the question. Why would people buy Macbooks when they heard of all the problems? Let me guess, because Apple has the most beautiful hardware ever? I would like to know why Apple is still worshipped when they pull crap like this.
- PathDaemon, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4OK, HaroldMGray, I have gripes with a lot of what you're saying.
"something that has as little functionality as a Mac"
What functionality is missing? You left out that detail/key argument.
"Seriously, their stuff is assembled in China, like plastic toys from McDonald's!"
And like Lenovos. Did you see the story recently about the government refusing to use ThinkPads for classified work because of fear that the Chinese were, eh, adding "special" parts to the computers manufactured there?
"The OS is good too and it works well, but that's only because stuff is locked down tighter than a strictly straight man's anus."
I disagree. Network-side, the OS is certainly locked down. User side, it's easy to do whatever you want. No "you don't really need to see the contents of the Program Files" messages here. The system's design is also much better. I won't get into it now, but the result is a better working and easier computer.
"It's not flexible because it's not popular because there's not programs to suit everyone's needs which is why there aren't many viruses because not many people want to make a virus that is going to affect such a small number of people."
There are fewer programs out there for Macs, mainly just fewer duplicates. There are equivalents to almost every Windows app. Macs are mainly lacking in specialized software written for clients that are almost exclusively Windows-based. Creating a good Mac virus is an ongoing challenge that hasn't been met.
"Why was AOL the victim of so many mail attacks for such a long time, because they were the best solution for internet for such a long time and therefor more popular. Thus more victims for a virus..."
AOL is n00bland. Better target. - anjinash, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5I'm not a Mac guy by any stretch.. but to say they have no functionality is pretty ignorant on your part. OSX kicks all sorts of ass, and with the command line you can do almost anything you would be able to do in Linux. Would you say Linux has no fnctionality?
It's Apple, the company itself, which bothers me. They have a cult like following of arrogant users who assume they're better than everybody else because they plunkied down a premium on hardware that they have minimal control over. Steve Jobs is treated like some kind of son of God when, in fact, he'd be just as bad as Bill Gates if he were in the same position. - HaroldMGray, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2You must not leave your house much...
- MechaFenris, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4I lack nothing on my Mac that I didn't have on my Windows PC. I have zero connectivity issues with Windows machines, I can do everything I used to do on my Windows box (except crashing for some reason.... It's funny, LAUGH), and I have zero issues with the OS.
Saying the Mac platform is "missing" something means you either are doing Andean Cross-stitch Llama pelts or you have some very specific needs that I doubt even Microsoft's platform can match.
The OS isn't "locked" down.... so you can't get to anything... it's simply MORE secure out of the box than Windows has been in the past (they are trying, nonetheless, but it's an uphill battle for them since "easier" means "less secure" to Redmond engineers for some reason.)
You are simply trying to bait the fanbois of the Mac platform so you can squeal with glee when they "attack" your position. Vague pronouncements and hyperbole does not a fact make. It is your opinion about a platform that for whatever reason, you dislike. Did an Apple employee pee in your birthday cake once or something?
And after ALL the items in this thread, we GET your feelings about the Mac. No need to repeat yourself again, modded down or not. - Glidedon, on 10/12/2007, -5/+6Look at this guy's screen name (jewsdidwtc)---- he's blocked. Everybody else should block him too.
- allanpat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I have the 17" macbook pro & have had NO overheating or whine problems. Have any 17inchers experienced this, or is this only on the 15"?
