- ApplCmptrDood, on 11/21/2007, -5/+139I'm so glad it hasn't happened to m
- CrackyJSquirrel, on 11/21/2007, -16/+51buried for inaccuracy.. Everyone knows Apple is flawless...
- Beatmiser, on 11/21/2007, -27/+58Where are the smarmy condescending Mac commercials for this one?
- MikeDugg, on 11/21/2007, -3/+30It happened before Leopard too....
- davidspiers, on 11/21/2007, -1/+26mac: hello, i'm a mac
pc: and i'm a pc...ahhhh....
mac: what's wrong pc
pc: all these years of typing has given me carpel tunnel syndrome
mac: ouch. with leopard, the keyboards on macs freeze every few minutes, preventing injury by forcing you to stretch.
pc: bastard
The story is true though, the problem only appeared on my first gen MBP after upgrading to Leopard. - phoomp, on 11/21/2007, -3/+23Duh ... the Mac commercials don't talk about Macs. They only talk about PCs.
- getoffmybridge, on 05/05/2009, -26/+44mac: I'm a mac...*slam slam tap tap tap*
pc: I'm a pc...what's wrong, bud?
mac: the keyboard on my $2k macbook pro isn't working, this is impossible! (incredulous look)
pc: lmao you stupid *****. mine works great, my laptop also has a core2duo, same size hdd, same ram, a "superdrive" standard, and only cost $600. - inactive, on 11/21/2007, -6/+22>The Microsoft fanboys jump at any opportunity to criticize Apple, no matter how silly.
you think non-working keyboards are silly? you think Apple fanboys don't jump at every opportunity to bash MS? - pathy, on 11/21/2007, -3/+18You're an idiot.
- jhudak, on 11/21/2007, -1/+15This has happened to me on several occasions... since Leopard. For me it freezes for about 45 seconds-minute, then comes back to life.
- jptolife, on 11/21/2007, -2/+14This crap happens to me to and it absolutely has to do with Leopard. Fix it apple, now!!
- tizz66, on 11/21/2007, -2/+13Oh, I got this immediately after upgrading my fiancee's laptop to Leopard. Clearing the PRAM fixed it.
- fluidfoundation, on 11/21/2007, -1/+12Hmm. I was wondering what the hell had happened. A few days after upgrading the keyboard locked, I rebooted and havent had it since. But it was strange and absolutely no keys worked so I'm going to say this was probably the case with me too.
- topherbook, on 11/21/2007, -6/+15Regardless, we know we won't see any clever commercials coming from Microsoft.
- GuidoRosso, on 11/21/2007, -0/+9Brand new MacBook has been doing this since the first day I got it. That and the disappearing windows due to Spaces.
- inactive, on 11/21/2007, -6/+14it's a feature
- kizzbizz, on 11/21/2007, -1/+96 months on Tiger and I was fine. Updated to leopard and now I get it, however it only happens after the computer goes into a light sleep (doesnt happen if it goes to a deep sleep i.e. Windows-esque hibernation). I'll bring it back up and maybe 50% of the time the keyboard freezes. Nothing short of a reboot will get it working again.
Im usually one that adheres to "Correlation does not equal causation," but come on Apple... Nobody complains about this before, yet once we upgrade to Leopard there are scores of people complaining about this problem? At least TELL me that its a problem with your new OS, instead of tip-toeing around the issue, blaming 3rd party software, yadda yadda. - topherbook, on 11/21/2007, -4/+1210 points for cleverness.
- mysteri0usdrx, on 11/21/2007, -8/+16its on the frontpage you imbecile...
- inactive, on 11/21/2007, -6/+13lol apple apologists.
- killtherebel, on 11/21/2007, -22/+29I thought everything on macs "just works"
- pathy, on 11/21/2007, -2/+8And all the ones with complaints can't type long enough to get them on the web.
- superKduper, on 11/21/2007, -9/+15This is UMPOSSIBLE! Apple are designed to be CRASHPROOF and HACKPROOF. That's why, for example, iPhones that are based on OSX can't be hacked with a simple payload hidden in an image file.
- MioTheGreat, on 11/21/2007, -2/+8That was hillarious.
Thank you. - MioTheGreat, on 11/21/2007, -5/+11It's obviously an experimental feature accidentally turning on.
Macs are known for 'simplicity', right? Well keyboards obviously have way too many buttons, so it's just trying to help out by removing them for you. - norbiu, on 11/21/2007, -0/+5It happened to me to. It usually lasts a few seconds and it's freaking annoying. Unfortunately, it's not the only issue. Anyone else having problems restarting or shutting down? Or screensavers not showing up?
- SuperSunny, on 11/21/2007, -1/+6Yea, it is. This has nothing to do with product quality. It's simply an OS error, that can be fixed, and it is uncommon.
- Chirp08, on 11/21/2007, -1/+6No issues with it here. But seriously, wtf is with Adobe? I can't tell you how many times photoshop and indesign have locked up on me in the middle of the stupidest stuff. And photoshop has a serious glitch that totally prevents me from entering any information into the hoirzontal toolbar at the top (like setting the width of the line tool). Leopard isn't perfect, its stable for day to day stuff, but at work I have random stuff crash here and there. Not nearly as stable as Apple's past releases, kinda dissapointing but nothing like what I've experienced on Windows. As with vista, with such large updates it's expected but it shouldn't be acceptable in this day and age..
- MalDON, on 11/21/2007, -4/+8You know you can get a lot of good laptops from various brands for 600 dollars now. Mostly from HP.
- tizz66, on 11/21/2007, -1/+5Mine has been fine...
- inactive, on 11/21/2007, -14/+18Give Vista a chance...
- DjOverEZ, on 11/21/2007, -7/+11Somehow this has to be Microsoft's fault. Apple products don't have glitches.
- Shorties, on 11/21/2007, -0/+4I never had this problem until this week, I think the latest update to leopard caused it. I was worried my keyboard was breaking. Sometimes the keyboard wont respond at all (Hit caps lock and the light doesn't change), the only way to resolve it is to close the computer and re open. (Sleep it and wake it). This has happened at least twice a day since the update a few days ago.
- Scorpion1169, on 11/21/2007, -0/+4Just started happening to me last night.
- pathy, on 11/21/2007, -4/+8Hey, don't worry people with this problem. Isn't Bootcamp included by default?
You can happily use Windows! Why, I do believe a Mac was one of the highest rated computers to use Vista with!
... >.> - GuidoRosso, on 11/21/2007, -0/+4Yes on the restarting or shutting down, happened when I hooked up my external hard drive. I think spotlight was trying to index it and it wouldn't let me restart... the restart window would pop up, I'd hit restart, and nothing. Also couldn't get any app to start after that, had to do a hard reset.
- IchiroBoston, on 11/21/2007, -0/+3Followup:
The corrupt files were:
/.Spotlight-V100/Store-V1/Stores/D0409D80-B5B4-4C4D-8C62-5BEFFB807F0B/.store.db: Input/output error
/Library/Preferences/FLEXnet Publisher/FLEXnet/adobe_00080000_tsf.data: Bad address
/Users/iashihar/Library/Caches/Adobe/Color/ACECache7i: Bad address
/Users/iashihar/Library/Preferences/com.adobe.Photoshop.plist: Bad address
After I deleted those files and flushing out the spotlight index it fixed my keyboard freezing problem.
Hope this helps. - MacParrot, on 11/21/2007, -2/+5So far you're the only one to bring it up. Is this something you WANT to have happen? If so, why?
- iwanarocket, on 11/21/2007, -0/+3my MBP keyboard froze but the the odd part was it was only frozen in certain apps, ie finder and text edit, but fine illustrator and neither of the apps were frozen, it was really odd, but i restarted it and its working like new.
- ubergeek09, on 11/21/2007, -0/+3My guess is your a ignorant fanboy.
- SuperSunny, on 11/21/2007, -1/+4Er, no, most Mac users do not say in steve we trust.
Sorry but are you just following the bandwagon of flaming hatred against people who like to use OS X, or are you formulating these opinions with your singular-digit IQ of a brain?
Where are the Mac Zealots? Everyone talks about them. I don't see them. Sorry. - northernmunky, on 11/22/2007, -0/+3Actually large portions of MacOSX ARE opensource.
You can download it here:
http://developer.apple.com/opensource/index.html - signal15, on 11/21/2007, -0/+3I have 3 macs, and it never happened before leopard. Now it happens to my MBP every couple of days. The keyboard usually comes back on its own.
Along with this, I've had a couple of other annoying problems:
- DNS lookups stop working. dscacheutil -flushcache doesn't always fix it, and a reboot doesn't either. I have to modify my /etc/hosts file and hit a site in the /ect/hosts, and things start working again. Modifying this file seems to clear out something somwhere.
- Some of the openssl libs were only compiled for the PPC platform. You can fix with with a couple of symbolic links. It causes some 3rd party apps, such as VPN clients to not work.
- AFP shares randomly disappear, rebooting the system hosting the shares fixes the problem temporarily
There are workarounds for all of these, but they are annoying. The 3 issues I mentioned above seem to have little coverage on forums and Apple's own discussion board. However, friends and coworkers are having the same issues, it's not just me. - kronzdigg, on 11/21/2007, -0/+3Had this happen twice with my intel IMAC last night.
- froman98, on 11/21/2007, -0/+3Maybe apple will send him some mittens.
- inactive, on 11/21/2007, -5/+8Does the keyboard work when running another OS? Linux, BSD, Windows etc.?
If so, it's pretty laughable that Apple can't get it to work on theirs when they chose the hardware specifically... - darnit, on 11/21/2007, -2/+4DUGG, wish i could Digg it again and again as Mac has been no help.
This happens to my brand new mac book pro ALL THE TIME (at least 3-4 times daily) requiring a reboot. This is a huge pain in the ass as I'm a graphic designer who always has a ton of apps/files open. I've tried apple support but ill be dammed if I'm going to wait 45 minutes in the hold que on a cell phone for tech support (yes i purchased apple care too - glad I wasted that $250) and the only mac store near me is remodeling, hence closed for a month.
The sad thing is - i was a PC guy for almost a decade (not to say i didn't pull my hair out with PC's). But i did buy into the whole "it just works" and decided to "switch" a month ago because vista didn't seem that appealing and I needed a new laptop anyway.
I hope they do come out with a fix ASAP because as it stands I am having some serious regrets about my decision and have actually begun working back on my old PC just to get things done. Sad really. - MacParrot, on 11/21/2007, -0/+2There are some. If you go to any of the Microsoft posts you'll probably find a few. They are just as annoying as the Apple haters. Too bad some people find it impossible to discuss issues without resorting to blantent fanboyism.
Of course I'm one to talk since I insulted someone's mother right here in this thread /shrug - basic0, on 11/21/2007, -5/+7Buried for ambiguity.
a) "...until either resolved on its own or else by restarting or waking the system." -- "waking" the system? So the keyboard doesn't work while the system is asleep? No kidding, my Toshiba does that too.
b) "More drastic steps such as resetting the PRAM on the system fail to return the keyboard to life..." -- Well that's interesting, in the previous paragraph it was stated that a reboot corrects the problem. So which is it? Does it persist over reboots or not? - TheMidnight, on 11/21/2007, -0/+2I usually don't have problems with the keyboard. I see my mouse pointer disappear and my trackpad stop responding on my MBP, or it refuses to turn the screen on after going to sleep. Then again, I've never really owned a laptop (Mac or Windows) that didn't have sleep issues at some point.
