What are the chances of a flaming notebook to happen to a guy who was looking for a way to get his Macbook replaced just 2 weeks ago? If this is a case of fraud then I hope the guy gets busted bigtime. The exploding battery isn't an issue to be screwed around with.
Lucy... you got some 'splainin to do... - nandorocker, on 10/12/2007, -3/+95"Have you restarted the system?"
- hinkbot, on 10/12/2007, -3/+64@Vanquish2005
If this is really your Macbook, doesn't this seem coincidental? Didn't you type this in a different digg 2 weeks ago?
"yeah i hate my macbook. I am trying to get Apple to let me upgrade to MacBook Pro. Dose anyone have any ideas on how to convince them?"
http://digg.com/apple/Apple_Macbook_is_Best_Computer_for_School_says_Seattle_Times - that5range, on 10/12/2007, -2/+45From your blog: http://vanquish2005.wordpress.com/
I'm missing something.... Typically people who own Astons have moved past 5th grade english. Fraud is very serious, as is liable.
"yes i was i was useing it when it happened and it got my hand on fire."
"I now own a MacBook and this is a pic from the Apple Store but I will have my own pic of my gay MacBook up soon."
"I live in Westfield NJ and I go to school in WestBrook CT. I loved Windows from 1992-2002 and then liked Apple from 2002-2006+. "
"Jim- I don’t like your comment. The reason why is because the MacBook was given to me. I was going to buy a MacBook Pro but then my friend gave it to me for my birthday. So I returned the MacBook so he could get his money back and I bought a MBP. I have the money to buy things like that. Like my Log Name for here is Vanquish2005. I own an Aston Martin Vanquish. Don’t comment on my blog like that or I will report you." - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+42MacBook - $2000
Butane Lighter - $5
Legal Fees - $20,000
Becoming Bubba's bitch while serving your 12 month fraud sentence...Priceless - Ireland, on 10/12/2007, -4/+39You haven't called them yet!!? If you are really the guy who said this happened to, then your a bit of a fool to have not called them yet. If you aren't the guy, then stop pretending to be.
- monkeybutler, on 10/12/2007, -1/+36Whoa! Anyone notice how the letters that burnt off were F-R-A-U and D?
Just kidding. But it is interesting that the macbooks EMBEDDED keys managed to leap right out of the flaming MacBook. And also, how the heck does someone have this much damage on a notebook that he said was IN HIS HANDS? This isn't a cartoon fire, it was a real electrical one so if it ignited then it would start with a smell, then smoke then eventually flames. A normal person wouldve had the problem doused way before it burnt the screen, keyboard, desk and HIS HANDS.
Poor kid. The Simpsons "immediate-fire" jokes have ruined it for young arsonists everywhere. - Derfus, on 10/12/2007, -4/+34i'm very skeptical of this claim, the picture doesnt add up with the story.
why don't you post some more pictures and pictures of the damage to your desk that you say you have?
don't tarnish apple's image just to get a free upgrade to a macbook pro, because thats what its looking like - QueenOfSwords, on 10/12/2007, -0/+30He's had time to post to Gizmodo....
- rolosworld, on 10/12/2007, -2/+32he said he got his hand burned, and the keyboard + LCD are burned as if the laptop was closed.. then he says it got on fire again 5 minutes later... sounds like a fantasy story...
- MOGua, on 10/12/2007, -2/+32This dude claims he owns an Aston Martin Vanquish and he's been spending weeks online looking for excuses to trade-up his MB for a MBP?
Vanquish: $260,000
MBP: $2,600 (1/100th the price) - threepio, on 10/12/2007, -3/+32Your Hand.
Caught.
On fire.
Riiiiiiiiight. - Wogna, on 10/12/2007, -7/+36Jesus, that comment was impossible to read.
- farfromsubtl, on 10/12/2007, -9/+34At least you dont have random shutdowns... you can just walk in and say "Hey look... it caught fire." Where as the rest of us have to be like: "Honest... it shuts down... randomly."

- RootDaddy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+24Vanquish2005: "stupid it was hitting the side i dent put it in right"
All your fraud are belong to us. - dmoney06, on 10/12/2007, -1/+24i think monkeybutler hit the nail square on the head.
- AstroPHX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+22SUPERDIGG+++++
I'm digging NOT because of the "fire" but because of the work everyone has done (and continue to do) to root out Vanquish2005. Fantastic stuff here. - rasterbator, on 10/12/2007, -2/+22Vanquish2005:
If this turns out to be a hoax, don't be surprised if you get phone calls from Gizmodo and Apple legal teams, as well as Department of Consumer Affairs. You just bought yourself a felony and some decent jail time. - dmoney06, on 10/12/2007, -2/+21Your hand got on fire?
- monkeybutler, on 10/12/2007, -2/+21Just curious but how do PC laptop owners rate the heat on their notebooks? Ive been running Centrino laptops for the last few years and they barely get hot at all. But even just for internet/email the Macbook (even with the updates) is a scorcher. Apple fans claim this is an acceptable temperature but personally I've been finding that PC centrino-based notebooks run extremely cool for basic uses.
- TheBarge, on 10/12/2007, -0/+18Looks like someone just burned up their MacBook in hopes of getting a Pro, and now has nothing. You got what you deserved you liar.
- monkeybutler, on 10/12/2007, -1/+18Maybe you should say your pants caught fire so you can have Levi's upgrade your sears bought tuffskins to a wicked-hawt Levi's 501 originals. And if that works you can start planning how to torch your house for the big upgrade...
- phisquare, on 10/12/2007, -0/+16Hm, interesting that Vanquish2005 deleted his little blog account. Fancy that.
- LoungeActx, on 10/12/2007, -6/+22whoa....and it wasn't the battery this time? What did Applecare say?
- krische, on 10/12/2007, -2/+18Then why does the burn pattern look like it was closed....
- morphie, on 10/12/2007, -1/+16Looks to me you weren't happy with your MacBook and tried to find a way to get around arguments with Apple / AppleCare. Spreading rumors of igniting MacBooks is just not done...
- n8r0n, on 10/12/2007, -0/+15What?!? For crying out loud, Eric, it seems like you are just making excuses at this point.
Do you need a USB cable for your camera? I can send you one, but only if you promise not to set it on fire. - ArcusOfSV, on 10/12/2007, -4/+19You build your own laptops? Ya da man!!
- FetalSage, on 10/12/2007, -4/+19Vanquish2005, sorry to say this but you're a complete idiot and a fanboy. I went through your blog, though I must add that I somehow lost a few braincells from reading that crap, and you continuously state that "Macbook Pro is better than Macbook" with idiotic 'proof' to back it up. This is just stupid 'stunt' to make the Macbook look bad and let Apple give you a Macbook pro, come on man, how can that be logical thinking?
I hope they throw your ass in a uvenile correction facility for attempted fraud. - Terc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+15From the article (Actually the comments, from Vanquish)
"yeah thats my MacBook. After I sent him the pic it lit on fire one more time. So it looks a lot worse then in the pic. I will be going to the New York 5th Ave Apple Store on saterday to get this fixed out with apple. I am quite pissed at apple for this."
It lit on fire one more time?!! So... it didn't shut down? Or you just decided it needed some more torching to make sure no one could prove it wasn't the laptop that set fire? Don't tell us the battery caused it to light back up, clearly the computer didn't survive your first torching session, erm, the first spontaneous combustion. - aplardi, on 10/12/2007, -20/+35Try unplugging the computer for 15 seconds, remove any floppy disks, and then boot into safe mode.
- dabombaman, on 10/12/2007, -1/+16Thats what I was going to say. How can it catch on fire, while open, and burn the keyboard and a little select part of the screen. Stop the lies.
And you say you've been on hold with Applecare for an hour? Pffff, either your not the guy or your just taking things way out of proportion.
If you hand really 'got on fire' or was burned, I would expect you to be suing, not complaining on digg. - RootDaddy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14@Vanquish2005
You didn't put the MagSafe in all the way? It's magnetic, it puts itself in, you tool.
I also like how the fire in "the bottom left corner of the screen" jumped over the screen hinge, through the hand that was on the keyboard, slipped under the keys, and then got hot enough to start burning "the hair on your hand" from underneath because you apparently still had your hand on the keyboard AFTER the screen itself caught fire.
If you are NOT lying, I strongly suggest you shave the hair on your palms. - kludger, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15Blog: Vanquish2005.wordpress.com

There's also this from a couple days ago (http://mobilitytoday.com/news/006856/apple_executive_relations_poor)

I'm with some of the other commenters. This story smells and it's not burnt plastic. - monkeybutler, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14"I didnt set it on fire. My friend Zippo did!"
- stayputnik, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13that's my problem with his story. i know for a fact that when you bring in a laptop with a problem, they take it from you immediately and over-night it to a tech facility. my wife's powerbook harddrive was about to die (wouldn't boot correctly), so we took it into an apple store the next day. they took it, sent it off, and 4 days later (including the weekend) it was ready to be picked up, good as new. if this guy actually brought in a charred laptop, they'd probably have given him a macbook pro on the spot (or at least after sending the macbook off to CSI to be examined)...
my conclusion: arson. - QueenOfSwords, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13At the least, he's out a perfectly innocent Blackbook.
- XorSystem, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13I do hope that he knows that if he is lying about this, he can easily be sued for a lot of money. I'm sure that it could be considered a felony case of fraud at that....
hmmm.... - ArcusOfSV, on 10/12/2007, -2/+15You been snagged noob. Dont drop the soap.
- P155, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14Is that the 1:18th scale Vanquish you have or could you only afford the 1:36th?
- mynuts, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13Can you post more pictures of the damage? Your picture lacks detail. It seems the jury is leaning more towards "*****" than a defective product, prove us wrong Vanquish.
- Wogna, on 10/12/2007, -3/+16I agree, something always goes wrong with everything. How many MacBooks has apple sold? CrapTons. And so far only one in the US has caught fire, that's not bad.
Of course with that said, my MacBook will probably catch fire tonight. - mynuts, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12He had a blog discussing his anger towards apple at http://vanquish2005.wordpress.com/, but it's gone now.
So here's a link to the PDF of the blog moments before it was deleted...
http://www.yousendit.com/transfer.php?action=download&ufid=ACF86DE5323BE3D1 - ArcusOfSV, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12Buy the laptop. If they were catching on fire alot we would be hearing about Apple stores burning down left and right. Dont be a sheep.
- Derfus, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14btw did you pour lighter fluid on it? how would a laptop get on fire like that?
- twygallypuff, on 10/12/2007, -5/+17me not much english language well. apple you are humpers!
- IHatePants, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13I can give a fair comparison of heat details for a few notebooks that I have owned in the past 1.5 years (I only own 3 notebooks right now, the rest I've given to family). These details are only heat related:
(All heat numbers on a 1-10 scale, 1 being room temperature, and 10 being unusable)
1) IBM Thinkpad with a 2.4ghz P4, heat score 3, and the fans barely kicked on.
2) Powerbook G4 17", heat score 4, got a little warm. Not much noticeable fan activity.
3) Macbook Pro 17", heat score 9 before the firmware update, about a 6 now, still gets fairly warm. Fans kicked on constantly before the firmware update, now they just kick on every once in a while, but run longer.
4) Macbook 13" (bought for my wife), heat score 5, gets a bit warm, but nothing bad. Fans are too quiet to notice. Heat score would probably be a 3 if she didn't use it on the bed, which blocks a lot of air circulation.
5) Quanta manufactured 1.7ghz Centrino, heat score 2, but the fans run non-stop. The damn thing is louder than some desktops I've owned.
6) Dell 1.7ghz Centrino, heat score 10, returned for refund.
Right now I only own the Macbook Pro, the Macbook, and the Quanta. My experience could differ from others because I tend to run my computers at heavy load (multiple instances of Parallels/VMWare, running Oracle 10g on most of my machines, etc).
I've found that a lot of my heat issues are due to heavy load. If I'm just browsing the web, my Macbook Pro stays nice and cool. - torpedobird, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12So, let me get this straight, they couldn't do ANYthing in an apple store, and told you to contact apple care? I find that very hard to believe...evidence is starting to pile up making this sound sketchy.
