- jouissance, on 10/12/2007, -2/+24*****. yes. no more cows.
- salazr, on 10/12/2007, -6/+25sorry dude. this one has a much better description and already has more diggs. yours was submitted 2 minutes earlier. suck on that ;)
- Jayeveryday, on 10/12/2007, -1/+18fan runs quietly and the temp seems to be going down
- gazzerh, on 10/12/2007, -1/+16Excellent. I find my MacBook runs about 10% cooler when idling after I installed this update. It also seems to run about 10% cooler than it usually did when doing other tasks.
I'm very happy - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+16Yeah, the fans seem to kick in at a lower temperature. My idle temp is now 56C as opposed to 63C. Room temperature has remained constant.
- cmer, on 10/12/2007, -3/+18This will be voted down, but I need to get it out: ABOUT F'ING TIME!!!!!!!!!!
- neosublime, on 10/12/2007, -6/+20Dude... you guys don't win a prize if you get the most diggs.
- sims, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13Mine idles at a good 15-20C cooler now. 70C down to 50C-55C.
- Nigran, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12Worked very well for me, gone is the "mooing sound" and the fan starts at lower temperatures. What used to be 67C at medium load is now 57C.
good job apple, a little late thought. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+15My MacBook has shown no considerable increase in fan noise.
- andrewguy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12bah no longer can i make an omelet on the go.
- LaughingMan11, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11The MacBook Pro had a firmware upgrade to change the fan speed behavior back in May.
- LaughingMan11, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8threepio:
Look for Core Duo Temp for a small app and a widget to measure temperature.
http://macbricol.free.fr/coreduotemp/
For a more powerful tool that lets you track the cores individually and keeps a running history graph of temperature, look for Temperature Monitor.
http://www.bresink.de/products.html - deadbaby, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9For real man. If only someone would make a website where users could somehow "digg" the stories they wanted to see instead of having editors post everything. Lame.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10When it resolves a widespread problem with a popular product, yes, yes it is. :)
- threepio, on 10/12/2007, -4/+11I've just updated and I can't hear a damn thing. I'm leaning dead close to the notebook and I can't hear any whirring, moving or other such noises.
What I can hear is the beast of a Pentium D Gateway that's sitting about three feet away - it's just idling and the fan sounds like a small hoover. - mackoid101, on 10/12/2007, -4/+11Might fix Kevin Rose's as well.
- rooskie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7took all of about 1 min to download, install, and reboot. Fans seem better :) A+
- LaughingMan11, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Same here. Mine used to idle at about 65C. Right now, it's set at 50C.
*thumbs up* - sakuraz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8So, why does america still use fahrenheit?
- inkhead, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6This is only for older macbooks, it says I don't need this update on my macbook I purchased yesterday, but my 3 month old ones does...
- eattoenails, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Yep, I'm noticing the same thing. I'm running a 23-inch ACD with my MacBook and normally get about 70C, but am averaging about 58C :D
- RevFry, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Woo hooo! My MacBook shows up tomorrow morning. Soooo glad I ordered it!
- Ricapar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Yes. If it wasn't for this, I wouldn't have noticed it.
- davdav, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Had the random shutdown
Sent to Apple
New Logic Board
Three weeks later I get it back and it is still shutting down
Apply firmware update and it is still shutting down
Apple is sending replacement computer. - threepio, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8As a user of all three I'm not particularly interested in the posts that have been Windows centric - there's just not enough in the way of interesting articles to justify it.
- gazzerh, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5During normal use the fan is inaudible like before the update. I hear no change. Although the fan may be running constantly it must be turned down to low RPM just to maintain airflow.
- greebowarrior, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4am i really the only person who likes the moo-ing?
personally, i want some white stick-on patches for my macbook, to turn it into a fresian - daldredge, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Cows don't sound like that.
- gentoolove, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5fixed my shutdown issue. I knew it wasnt hardware.
- r0ck3tm4nn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Awesome. No more moo, now fan lightly spins all the time, inaudible over the din of my AC or fridge - can't really hear it unless I put my ear to the keyboard. Temps went from 67-72 to 58-62 C. A little late coming but very pleased. Wonder what this will do to battery performance though...
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Same here. The upper left corner of my MacBook is MUCH cooler than it normally is.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5I've noticed that the fan now runs ALL the time (well, at least at a higher speed than it did before) and it makes noise akin to what I heard above the "moo threshold" before the update. That is, it makes the same amount of constant noise as it did when my notebook was doing something REALLY intensive before the update.
- webpoet73, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3The iStatPro Version 3.0 monitors temps as well as alot of other information.
http://www.apple.com/downloads/dashboard/status/istatpro.html
Mine is down almost 10 degrees. Nice job, Apple... should have been this way from the start. - jbouklas, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Cool. Fan now runs continuously, and almost silently unless you put your ear to it. Just got my MacBook back from Apple after they replaced my motherboard (random shutoffs). Now idles at under 40C, doesn't go much past 60C under full load. Cool.
- eattoenails, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3@threepio
I am using MenuTemperature - http://captire.info/MenuTemperature/ - tfedullo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2i would like an option to choose between the two, since there are situations when either would be nice
- NicP, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I took my macbook in yesterday because of the random shutdowns, it sucks to be without it, i wonder if this would have fixed it
- p00p, on 10/12/2007, -14/+16From what I hear, this firmware update will make your fan run constantly, and I've also read that it doesn't fix the random shutdown issue (I can't tell, because so far after having AppleCare service my MacBook, the issue hasn't plagued me)
Can anyone testify how loud this update will make the fan? Has Apple commented on the necessity of this update? - sims, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2For iStat Pro you need the SpeedIt kernal extention to see temps. I use iStat nano in dashboard for monitoring my temps.
- alexander, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2This has made my macbook much cooler and much quieter.
- bongo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I'm not sure if you have the same random shutdown issue I did (with an MBP), but it happened because my battery was failing. The computer kept shutting down when the battery dropped to 20%. Eventually it failed altogether. Apple will replace it if that's your problem.
- thewebguy, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5don't digg him down, he was only asking. it was an important question too
- angelp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2That's weird. My Macbook has been absolutely silent since I downloaded the update yesterday. The only time I heard the fans was when I restarted for the update and that was exactly what the instructions stated you would hear for a few seconds.
- TimDigg, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3"For real man. If only someone would make a website where users could somehow "digg" the stories they wanted to see instead of having editors post everything. Lame."
good point - davidd009, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2installed the update earlier today and it seems to have fixed that stupid mooing sound I had a few times and it is running less hotly, but the fans always being on is probably going to get a little annoying
- KenLin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1http://www.appledefects.com/media/moo.mp3
- saturnring, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1this seems to be working. my macbook is definitely running much cooler. i hadnt measured the temp before, but now it runs between 53-60 degree C.
i can finally keep it on my lap! - cmer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I noticed a HUGE speed increase since I installed the firmware. Has anyone else noticed this? I think my mac was running so hot before that the OS was slowing down the cpu to reduce the heat.
