- thebuggalo, on 01/16/2008, -63/+291Apple really dropped the ball. I think this will be a huge flop for them.
- ZisforZebras, on 01/16/2008, -40/+221The question remains: Will it blend?
- 0perator, on 01/16/2008, -20/+170"Quick disagree with everyone and we'll get traffic!!"
- gregdogum, on 01/16/2008, -47/+1911 step fowards, 2 steps back. pricing and battery issues worry me.
- gr00vy, on 01/16/2008, -30/+156Holy cow, obviously NOBODY here is an executive ANYWHERE, and have never had a sexy slim laptop before. Look at the TZ line of sony, they are MUCH MUCH more expensive, not as fast not as capable, and can't run MacOSX as well as windows. This will sell, not to you, but it will be one of the most popular models. It destroys the category. You just have no idea what the category is.
- quidpro, on 01/16/2008, -31/+152I don't understand what people thought was going to happen...
SSDs: Have been out a while now. Are small. Are still expensive. Even when Apple buys them.
A thin lightweight laptop is NOT going to have an optical drive. The goal is to have no moving parts at all. - ftx437, on 01/16/2008, -34/+141It just doesn't seem useful in any way to me..more likely to break it then use it.
- johnny222, on 01/16/2008, -6/+107How big is your ass?
- rudy23, on 01/16/2008, -17/+110I dont see how pricing is an issue. Ultra Portables are premium laptops for road warriors and people with money to burn. This is not and everyday workhorse your are expecting to buy. The nearest laptop comparable in size which is the Sony is around 300 dollars more expensive. So quit whining about the price.
- ftx437, on 01/16/2008, -27/+114also it just seems to me that apple is playing/praying on peoples vanity (if I'm using that word right)
- GetUthunized, on 01/16/2008, -5/+85I fear I'd have the gut reaction to chuck it like a frisbee just for curiosity's sake.
- twtmc, on 01/16/2008, -26/+101Fanboys
- inactive, on 01/16/2008, -21/+80Pricing killed them on this one, they need a sub 800 dollar notebook
- Murrabbit, on 01/16/2008, -49/+102So it's a regular Mac Book, only with tons of features stripped out, and it costs about 2x more. On the other hand an Asus eeePC costs about 300 dollars and is just as useful.
How exactly does Apple make money again? - davidlow, on 01/16/2008, -1/+49I'm a road warrior and I'm totally budgeted for the MBA's pricing, no problem. But I can't use it because the battery doesn't come out. On long flights (>18 hours) I need to get work done and there isn't always a place to plug in a laptop, so I bring 3 extra batteries and get over 12 hours of battery life. With the MacBook Air I would only get 4 hours. Stupid.
Today I am one disappointed road warrior. - Terr01, on 01/16/2008, -9/+51Hasn't that been the MO for the last few years?
- sexualaj, on 01/16/2008, -54/+94There is no question about it that Apple love titles,so much so There willing to cut back on basics just to have the title of
"Worlds Thinnest Laptop"
Pathetic, Go on Apple Fanboys Digg me down. I'm just telling how I see it. - naio, on 01/16/2008, -17/+57Asus disagrees with you.
- deadbaby, on 01/16/2008, -22/+57I'm not sure why people thought it would be cheap... ultra portables are very expensive.
- TacticalPenguin, on 01/16/2008, -13/+48iPods, iPhones, macbooks, iMacs
- deadbaby, on 01/16/2008, -7/+40The Asus EEEPC has a much slower CPU, much smaller screen, much smaller storage, no 802.11n, no Bluetooth, less battery life, etc, etc, etc. They're two entirely different products.
- Zaneris, on 01/16/2008, -12/+43I don't see why everyone is complaining, it's perfect for what it's supposed to do... be used on the go, if you're at home, don't use it! Use your desktop, this is not intended to be used as a replacement for a desktop, just when you can't use one, hence the ultra light... LED screen, long battery life etc...
It does its job, and it manages to look awesome while doing it. I own a Dell Precision M90, and have any of you tried actually taking one around with you? They're HEAVY! No where near enough battery life to do anything productive throughout the day without changing batteries, and it applies to most notebooks. That said, if I had the spare cash, I'd buy a macbook air in addition to the notebook I already own, not as a replacement. - Lyanto, on 01/16/2008, -6/+36Preying. And yes, that's been their marketing strategy for quite awhile. The MBA seems like such a gimmick to me. They cut way too many corners to make it that slim. It looks pretty bad compared to the Sony X505, and that was released in 2004. How is it that the X505 manages to have an Ethernet port, stereo speakers, and a user-removable battery, and still manage to be slimmer than the MBA which doesn't have those? It's even more lame that it seems obvious that the lack of features is an attempt to further rape the wallet of anyone willing to buy this thing: No, it doesn't have an Ethernet port but we WILL sell you an aesthetically pleasing USB Ethernet Adapter for $29. A removable battery? Sorry, but we WILL replace your MBA battery for you for $129 (installation is FREE!). Allow 2-4 weeks for shipping.
- whataboutdave, on 01/16/2008, -1/+31Exactly. I'm sure this product is perfect for someone but that someone simply is not me. Or anyone I know.
- lostarchitect, on 01/16/2008, -1/+30it's not for gaming or editing video. i don't think the intel video is an issue.
- airwalke, on 01/16/2008, -6/+34Don't forget the G4 Cube. Although it's somewhat of a collectors item now, it flopped in a big way similar to how I expect the MBA to flop. The only difference between the two is that... well... I bought the Cube. :(
- Worldchrisis, on 01/16/2008, -8/+36Eye Candy.
- CraigJ, on 01/16/2008, -4/+32I agree. Personally, I don't want one, but there is definitely a market for this. The engineering is fantastic, the size of the MB, how Intel shrank down that chip, etc. Smaller cost more, not less.
- bigbadgoat, on 01/16/2008, -14/+42and the apple TV... which will still flop.
- bowe, on 01/16/2008, -1/+28anyone who's ever been to a hotel knows that hotel wifi sucks. why no ethernet jack?
- PA42, on 01/16/2008, -9/+35If you cannot see the difference between this and the Asus, you just don't want to. The purpose and quality is completely different. Don't get me wrong, I'm far more likely to own an Asus and I think it is a great step forward, but it is not comparable to this.
- Dotcommer, on 01/16/2008, -0/+26any person who ends their sentence with "nuff said" is a D bag also btw.
- FoxOrian, on 01/16/2008, -3/+28Honestly for an Ultraportable, to me it still seems too large in a width and depth factor. When I think of an ultra portable, I think of something that can [at most] hide in a pile of 8.5"x11" notepads. The Air is the same size as the normal MacBook, only half the thickness. It feels like you're getting something that is a more expensive, thinner edition of a normal Macbook without the extra connectivity. *shrug*
- colincornaby, on 01/16/2008, -9/+34No Firewire = Do Not Want
- inactive, on 01/16/2008, -2/+27You can run photoshop on an eeePC...
- zioxide, on 01/16/2008, -0/+25Every hotel I've been to within the past 5 years has had an ethernet jack. Not all of them have had wireless though.
- chicagospur, on 01/16/2008, -2/+26nVidia would probably suck the battery dry and made the thing thicker.
- bjornski, on 01/16/2008, -2/+26So the MBA is being sold for looks and to impress others.
Thanks for clearing that up. - NYCowboy, on 01/16/2008, -4/+28wait till August when they do the price drop to screw with the early adopters again.
- DrivinWest, on 01/16/2008, -6/+29The eeePC is just as useful? The screen is half the size, the keyboard is the size of a Blackberry's, it has 1/40th of the storage, and the OS won't run Office (for better or worse, that's a prerequisite in most of the corporate world. OO doesn't cut it on compatibility).
How can that be "just as useful?"
Don't get me wrong, the eeePC is super cool, but it's something else entirely. - fjc8, on 01/16/2008, -2/+25The cheaper Dell Latitude D430 and Lenovo ThinkPad X61s weigh 3.0 lbs and 2.7 lbs respsectively.
- davidlow, on 01/16/2008, -4/+26No built-in ethernet port.
No built-in modem.
No FireWire connectivity.
80GB maximum hard drive capacity
Will people please stop calling it a road warrior laptop? This is definitely not someone's primary computer. - elfprince13, on 01/16/2008, -7/+29ummm...no wireless? that was the point of it is that its almost completely wireless. someone didn't pay attention
- musicpyrite, on 01/16/2008, -10/+32I say we blend you and your catchphrase first.
- cbuddha42, on 01/16/2008, -4/+26Gogo Apple battery replacement service. And before someone claims that no one has 2 batteries for their laptop, I do. And yes, I sometimes carry the spare with me. Yes I know it's not designed for heavy use, but someone wanting an ultraportable might be *gasp* taking it somewhere without many power outlets.
The video I can live with as it will take less power, less space, and produce less heat than a nVidia chip, and it's not ment for games, but I really don't see how a battery release or door would add thickness or weight. That said, an option for a better video even if it decreased battery life would have been nice.
Finally I think a lot of people think a 1k - 1.2k maybe 1.5k price tag would have been more appropriate given the functionality. If that means a slightly slower clockspeed on the chip or w/e then so be it; we have already identified that this is not a power user machine.
Oh and one more thing, I understand the lack of an optical drive, sony used to do this and we all made fun of them for it, but I really don't think the no ethernet thing makes sense. How much space does that really take? - theradical, on 01/16/2008, -2/+23as an aside i would like to point out that apple still has not adjusted their pricing scheme for the canadian market. in other words, a canadian consumer will have to pay 200$ more (US) for the solid state (all ready over priced) machine.
- cshanes, on 01/16/2008, -2/+23pricing is totally an issue but apple already told engadget that the battery will be replaceable for the same cost as the MacBook Pro.
- Typhoon2009, on 01/16/2008, -1/+21Of course we're not executives... if we were, we 1) would be working and not on Digg and 2) we wouldn't be bitching about the price of this thing. But the majority of people on Digg and on Earth aren't executives.
- akwok, on 01/16/2008, -10/+30The point of an ultraportable is to be, well, portable in all /three/ dimensions. Making it super thin does not have much of an advantage if it is still roughly the same width and length of any other 13.3" Macbook.
I was really hoping for a 10-12" Macbook Air. A 13.3" (and extremely slow) Macbook Air just doesn't make sense. -
