- ibjhb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10I'm sure they have the $$$ to buy more than one iPod
- apotropaic, on 10/12/2007, -5/+14Yea ipods aren't good enough resolution/large enough screen... this is just a gimmick. A nice portal DVD player would be more useful IMO
- laserman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9This is definitely newsworthy. It's about how technology is changing the way that baseball is approached. Who are any of you to say that the screen is too small? The 14 players seem to be coming back every game to see their at bats. IT'S USEFUL FOR THEM. And the technology is spreading to new teams. The picture is sufficient for the players to glean something from it.
By the way, adding additional videos after each game, distributing the same clips to 6 or 7 players is more feasible with an ipod than burning and distributing DVDs each game. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Countries with pro baseball leagues:

- jmc730, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Ever hear of the World Baseball Classic? Obviously not you should look into it.
- perre, on 10/12/2007, -4/+9that is awesome. for a pro ball pitcher, it's like a student cramming homework before the big test. choice quote: "Rockies slugger Todd Helton has every hit since 1998 stored by month on his iPod" I imagine you could also sort by player, team, etc, like you do music... that would be a great little app to go public.
- shmatt, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Actually, that's kind of cool, ususally the players have to go back into the clubhouse to scout. This way they can just stay in the dugout.. and no you don't need a big screen to see a batter's tendencies.
- Rhine23, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7Even though I own an ipod video wouldn't you want something with a bigger screen so you can actually see something?
- SonicAD, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Actually, they still have to go back to the locker room or elsewhere... they can't take computers, etc. into the dugout, and I'd guess iPods fall into that category too.
http://www.popularmechanics.com/science/sports/1283276.html - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -5/+8Coming soon to the front page of Digg:
Accountant uses Ipod to keep wind from blowing papers off desk. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4It certainly does! Compare the portability of an iPod and the portability of a laptop. You can't browse the web or anything on an iPod, but you can fit it into your pocket, and watch a ton of videos. Gee, that sounds just like what they want...
- joshjoneswas, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1HA! --- "It's a good way to refresh yourself on how you got guys out,"
COME ON! Video cameras have been around for years now and players have been watching footage of other players and learning from them...
Love video iPods, of course, but gosh.... - OneFishTwoFish, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yes, but does he have the express, written consent of Major League Baseball?
- Deuterium, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3This is the Rockies we are talking about. From recent headlines and news they are more apt to have the latest gospel hits or Dobson sermons on their iPods than anything to do with baseball.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1No mater what they do the Rockies will still suck because they play in thin air.
LETS GO METS. - ANorton, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Sorry people this is no longer just a tech site. Just wait until Digg v3 comes out soon.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2That's pretty hardcore. Helton's a pretty good hitter on a crummy team, I'm glad to see his enthusiasm. 8 years of hits is a LOT!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Big deal! You can do the same thing with a number of PMPs. The only reason why it is on the front page is because it was the Ipod.
Seriously, it would make more sense to just admit it and stop pretending that it was for any other reason. - cleverboy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2As a useability thing, it's perfectly cool digg.
I've watched shows on my iPod and its fine and easy to use. Watching little videos for cues on styles and other things makes sense. If you needed to carry around something as LARGE around as a dvd, you're already sacrificing convenience for little reason (remember that CD shaped jukebox?). Plus, if there is a televsion, they can connect the ipod to that tv just using a little cord.... so, its a moot point. - antsony, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I agree. how different is this from watching it on a portable player? Are we just astonished becuase its an ipod video?
GO GIANTS@! - awhawkeye, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1http://digg.com/links/Wrigley_Dugouts_Wireless
- skell, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1"I'm sure they have the $$$ to buy more than one iPod"
I don't know about you, but even if I was a billionaire, I would not want to travel with more than 1 iPod. I would want one device that was large enough to hold all my content. - kolop1, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3 They also use the to do list to remind them when to inject them selves with steroids.
- mediocreguy, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4Since when did Japan become part of the US?
- niner9, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1With video too!
- Trjn, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1By that same logic, it's just as easier to distribute the data onto laptops for the players to view at their own convenience.
Sorry, but this really isn't a newsworthy story. No matter how you wrap it up, it's just a sporting team doing the same thing that pretty much every other professional sporting team in the world does, except on some happy little technology that everyone loves.
A portable DVD player, home theatre system, PSP, 5G iPod, mobile phone, or just a plain old computer, all of these things can do this, so why is it news that people have chosen to use one of them? - joshjoneswas, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1HAHA! Killing me. So dang true!
- geekee, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Video iPods suck for video. He should use something with a bigger screen. Half the face of the video iPod is occupied by the controls.
- shawnanigans, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1I just thought I would let you all know that baseball is the slowest ***** "sport."
- RegisteredUser, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0As others have mentioned, the video ipod isn't the best choice for this. The small screen, the reduced frame rate, and weak playback control.. this is just another case of ipod hype.
- compu73rg33k, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3"I thought this was a technology news site, not a forum for discussing how grown-up men hit little balls with big sticks, in a game that is basically only played in one country."
Since you obviously didn't read the headline or the article, the players are using a peice of technology in a new and clever way. That's how it's technology related. - joshjoneswas, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Glad someone else agrees! Too bad we get bashed for stating the truth!
Rock on brother... - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -7/+5This is about as newsworthy as my latest crap.
Seriously do you see Toshiba fanboys making posts like "OMG uses laptops to work with a spreadsheet" - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -9/+2Yeah, you right it is weird why people would digg something like this.
- soogy, on 10/12/2007, -15/+8So, they use iPods. Big deal. This isn't news, they've been studying swings and pitches for years.
Just because they use an iPod to view the videos doesn't make it any more news-worthy than them watching these same videos on their laptops. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -11/+4Yeah, this is definitely not front page worthy.
- skell, on 10/12/2007, -11/+2With all that video & data they are looking at, wouldn't it be ironic if they couldn't fit any music on it, for when they're on the road...
- togelius, on 10/12/2007, -11/+1What is this all about? Some kind of sport? Ah, baseball - it took some googling to find out. I thought this was a technology news site, not a forum for discussing how grown-up men hit little balls with big sticks, in a game that is basically only played in one country.
