- smacksaw, on 08/25/2008, -19/+167On the iPhone launch day, I went out and bought myself a brand-new...LG Dare.
I don't really think it's "propaganda", I think it's telling the true story. I picked up the phone, watched video on YouTube and was impressed. I asked the price for internet - $15. It was cheaper. Slower, but cheaper. As was my TXT package which was $10. I got the phone for $150 and a free 8GB card. I mean, every single thing Verizon did was to try and match/beat AT&T. I still think the iPhone is better equipment in many ways, but not THAT much better (blasphemy, I know).
What I found funny about the picture from the article is the price matrix showing the $800+++ cost of using the iPhone. The similarity in numbers was not lost on me, either. Yeah, I might save $50 on the phone over the iPhone and $5/mo here and $10/mo there, but in the end it still adds up to an assload of money. And so Verizon only fleeces me slightly less than AT&T. Yay.
The dealmaker for me is that I have the North America+Canada plan. AT&T doesn't offer anything remotely like it. It's cheaper for me to use my Verizon phone in Canada than my Rogers phone, except with my Rogers I have unlimited data/video calling. I think how cool it would be to have a Dare and an iPhone (Rogers), but after that whole data/pricing fiasco, I just can't do it.
Conclusion: not propaganda. - MtheoryX, on 08/25/2008, -7/+103As an avid Mac user, I have to say:
It's a damned phone, already! My god, you'd think we were in the Crusades here on digg.
If you don't like it, don't buy it. Simple as that. - BufordT, on 08/25/2008, -5/+62Knowing the shortcomings of their competition, how dare they!!
That is sarcasm for all of the retards on Digg who are incapable of its recognition. - Dumbledorito, on 08/25/2008, -0/+47You mean it's a shock for a company to prep its salesforce on a competitive product? They should be lauded for having more foresight than most electronics mongers I've dealt with.
- MrFurious2k, on 08/25/2008, -0/+32It'd be one thing if this was all untrue or made up. But it looks like all the points are pretty much true. The commentary by the author of the article seemed a little over the top though.
- MacParrot, on 08/25/2008, -1/+30I wouldn't really call this anti-iPhone propaganda. It's just a tool for their sales force. As long as they don't tell out and out lies (iPhone gives you AIDS!), what's the big deal?
- streak, on 08/25/2008, -16/+44Hmm... On iPhone, I seem to have OTA music from my entire iTunes collection while on EDGE, 3G and Wi-Fi, using the Simple Media application on my iPhone and desktop. Not to mention Internet radio. Mobile Safari is wonderful, as is proper rendering of HTML e-mail. Visual Voicemail NOW, not someday. 3-1/2 inch display. Wireless syncing with my desktop. A plethora of VNC and ssh terminal apps are already available for the iPhone. Best portable media player ever. Software updates directly from the manufacturer, not who-knows-when-if-ever through a third party. What's not to like?
- serif69, on 08/25/2008, -0/+22As an iPhone user, I don't like a few things. MMS is a big one for me, as is horizontal keyboard layout for email and text. I honestly can live without copy/paste until they figure it out. But all of these things are software related, and I don't expect Verizon to continuously update the OS for the LG Dare. At least I have some hope that they'll be fixed on the iPhone, and the benefits (as you outlined, especially) far outweigh my issues.
- oldhick, on 08/25/2008, -6/+25Its called Marketing, not lying. They don't claim not to carry because of those "problems". Learn about this little thing called "business".
- inactive, on 08/25/2008, -1/+17You failed to miss the point of propaganda. Propaganda isn't true...everything on this paper is quite true. Anyways, it is called marketing, get used to it.
- FutureGuy, on 08/25/2008, -1/+17Its anti-Apple product so its by default Propaganda, where were you last 5 years? /s
- parasitemite, on 08/25/2008, -1/+16This is ridiculous... the title is so grandiose!
- SugarCoatedSalt, on 08/25/2008, -7/+20I don't see what's wrong with this...
but I bet Verizon is beating themselves for not taking the iphone when apple offered it to them. - drlha, on 08/25/2008, -8/+21More importantly the iPhone's software isn't crippled or modified by the phone company, unlike most Verizon phones.
- sarchosis, on 08/25/2008, -15/+28Myth: 3G iPhone is now twice as fast
Myth: The new 3G iPhone is now half the price
Myth: iPhone Data Plan Covers All Data
Myth: 3G iPhone Data Plan includes more data at affordable prices!
Myth: People bought the iPhone 3G for any of the reasons listed above. - fuzzmeister, on 08/25/2008, -2/+15It's all well and good to point out the iPhone's failings, but it is still quite clearly superior to anything Verizon offers at the moment. If other phones were exposed to the same level of scrutiny and the same high standards (a consequence of the Apple brand) that the iPhone is, the difference would be much more obvious.
In the end though, buy whatever phone you want. This isn't something worth getting incensed over. - smity9384, on 08/25/2008, -0/+13I don't get the story here. Any store I've ever worked at has always given you a quick briefing of why their product is better. Any contractor you ever have work on your stuff will tell you why they are better.
It is sneaky how they dropped the price and bumped the plan. Very effective marketing ATT....very effective indeed. - inactive, on 08/25/2008, -2/+14"And I'm also glad to see that AT&T isn't a big fat monopoly just yet"
What? AT&T was the original "big fat monopoly" in telecommunications. There was nobody bigger and fatter than them for a real long time. - ron7852, on 08/25/2008, -7/+19Dugg for the use of JesusPhone 3G
- SugarCoatedSalt, on 08/25/2008, -0/+12OK, I could be wrong but didn't apple first go to Verizon with the Idea of an iphone on their network? (before the iphone was going to be GSM or CMDA) and Verizon said no.
AT&T was the only one that agreed with the iphone, out of all the major networks. - rblancarte, on 08/25/2008, -0/+11So?
Verison wants to sell their own phones, and their service, can you fault them for having canned answers ready to go?
Nothing they say here is a lie, what is the problem? - ibeetle, on 08/25/2008, -1/+12@smacksaw--
But that is only where you live. Where I live Verizon rakes you over the coals: $20 for Data. Cheapest TXT plan is $15; $20 for a real one. The phone is $150 only after a $100 mail in rebate (read the fine print: it takes 6 months to get refund) no 8GB card (lucky you) and on top of all that ass screwing Verizon's cheapest talk plan is $10 a month more than AT&T's.
In the north east (NYC) area there is nothing cheap about Verizon. But ***** they have a great signal. - inactive, on 08/25/2008, -0/+11Propaganda = political lies.
this is just commercial sales stuff. - inactive, on 08/25/2008, -1/+12Granted, but I think most of us are sick of hearing about the iPhone and how great it is in every tech publication we read for the same reason. It is just a phone, that still cant do some things that my LG can.
- VibhuC812, on 08/25/2008, -0/+10Dylson, buddy, i think he's talking about the negatives of the iPhone...
- bigdoof, on 08/25/2008, -0/+9Pretty much everyone I know that has an iPhone bought it because it was only $200 out the door and because they thought it was faster than the original.
- MWeather, on 08/25/2008, -0/+9Cingular, like AT&T was a mini-bell. In a sense, AT&T bought itself after it was forced to split up.
- Saitekc, on 08/25/2008, -3/+12Buried because alot of it is true.
- MScrip, on 08/25/2008, -2/+11Disclaimer: above math proves that Verizon is more expensive* than AT&T. Therefore all Verizon customers are suckers. They should have gone with Cingular years ago.
* Verizon has better coverage. EV-DO is really good, too. - MikeSobe, on 08/25/2008, -2/+11I think you mean isn't crippled or modified by the service provider. Because the iPhone is crippled (limited) by Apple. No need for Verizon to do it.
- johnn11238, on 08/25/2008, -0/+8Umm...
That's not propaganda, it's good marketing. - goodylallen, on 08/25/2008, -1/+93 G-whiz! All phone companies are scam artists.
- kwelling12, on 08/25/2008, -0/+8This is something that ALL companies do. They are trying to help their salespeople understand the negatives of a competitor's products, which will help said employees sell their own products. It's not propaganda. It's just good business practices.
- Definition, on 08/25/2008, -5/+13Let's do our own math. Looking at the picture/ad/poster that Verizon has issued; AT&T's Data is $30
Verizon's Data is $40.
Assuming each would be for a 2 year contract, that would cost you $720 for Cingular and $960 for Verizon. Remember, this is only for data at 3G/EVDO levels. Now, add voice, at Unlimited Minutes.
AT&T's voice is $100, adding up to $2400 + $720 in data = $3120, and Verizon's voice is $139, adding up to $3336+$960 in data = $4296.
Let's add the iPhone to AT&T's plan, which would be $3319, and a similar $199 phone to Verizon; $4495. It's a difference of $1375. Which is fairly large. - MikeSobe, on 08/25/2008, -1/+8I don't think you understand what you are talking about.
The Dare's Data is $15 a month and for $40 you get Data, unlimited messaging and turn by turn GPS.
Blackberry's are $30 a month and most smartphones are $30 a month for data. (VZW and ATT are the same)
The iPhone is $30 a month for data and in order to get unlimited messaging you have to add a $20 which makes it $50 and you still don't get turn by turn GPS.
That is what the picture says.... well not the Blackberry part - MacHarborGuy, on 08/25/2008, -0/+6because they probably pitched to Verizon BEFORE they (apple) made the decision to to go with GSM or CDMA. Apple probably wanted to lock in a vendor before anything else got rolling.
- SnuKs, on 08/25/2008, -2/+8I did the switch from Verizon to get the iPhone. I love the phone, I'm ok with the service and I dont regret it. With that said this isn't propaganda at all, it's truth. Gizmodo, being the super flamboyant Apple fanboys they are, loves to spin this *****. I think it's more sour grapes for them rather Verizon.
You can't blame Verizon for trying every angle to prevent customers from switching. I just hate when people spin it as something that it's not.
Very FoxNews like of Gizmodo. - lichme5000, on 08/25/2008, -9/+15It's not a phone, though, it's a handheld computer. At some level, I think Apple has done themselves a disservice calling it the iPhone. Frankly, a better name is iPod, but that was already taken.
I use the thing all the time, and maybe 5% of that is for making calls. - skyshock1, on 08/25/2008, -1/+7My roomate's JesusPhone 3G has crashed almost daily since he bought it. Same w/ my boss's. I can't stand Verizon as a phone company and would never use their services, but If Verizon is commenting on how it's a buggy product and they don't want to carry it, I fail to see how that's a sinister thing to do.
- ramsinks.com, on 08/25/2008, -0/+6it was "leaked on purpose" .. sheep.
- bigbadboston, on 08/25/2008, -2/+8wanna bet in less than 5 years there will be no iPod/iPhone differentiation any more?
who is old enough to remember "MultiFinder"? or the original "SuperDrive" hint: it swallowed 3.5 floppies.
this has all been planned a looooong time ago. it will simply be "iPod" and you'll get one at birth. - willster580, on 08/25/2008, -0/+5If this is propaganda, all marketing is.
- meltingcube, on 08/25/2008, -0/+5I hope you guys realize that this does not complain about the iPhone (well most of it), but does make note on the problems AT&T has, especially the bad 3G coverage, where AT&T lied about some coverage areas. I would love to get an iPhone, but its AT&T's service plans that is making me pass on it.
- chrisfastm3, on 08/25/2008, -1/+6Buried! God forbid the competitors learn about their competition so they can sell their own products confidently. GEESE!!!!!
- oldhick, on 08/25/2008, -1/+6Knowing your competition's offerings is an important part of marketing. Countering your competitors claims is important. FYI, the iPhone isn't the "best" phone. It is "a" phone and it suits the needs of many people. If you like it, great. Truth is, AT&T sucks. As an iPhone 3G user who was formerly a Verizon customer, I can tell you that I miss Verizon's coverage dearly. Lack of pic messaging stinks as well and the GPS is far worse than I had on my 3 year old LG VX9800 which offered turn-by-turn.
I still like my iPhone and enjoy its novelty, but to pretend its the best and Verizon has nothing offer is fairly sad. - RizenBB, on 08/25/2008, -0/+5I don't really see any problem with what they wrote. Most of it appears to even be valid points, although whether or not they affect the customer or the customer cares will vary obviously.
- BogusJimmy, on 08/25/2008, -0/+5Apple's MobileMe provides OTA syncing (the only other option is local USB syncing)
- Elias1, on 08/25/2008, -0/+5I find it hard to believe a real Verizon document would use exclamation points, yet alone that many. There is even a double-exclamation point.
- inactive, on 08/25/2008, -0/+4You forgot the unlimited messaging for $20 per month for the iPhone which is an extra $480 for 2 yrs.
For Data (2yrs):
VZW = $960 (also includes GPS)
ATT = $1200
And I have no idea where you got those voice prices unless you already include the Data for VZW...
Conclusion...."Definition" is a retarded mutant offspring of a fish frog! - prisoner24601, on 08/25/2008, -1/+5The pricing plans on both AT&T and Verizon are insane. I got the T-Mobile "Hot Spot @ Home" program for $10 a month. I've gone almost 3,000 minutes in a month on the program and ALL the minutes I use over the internet are included for the $10. I've looked at the iPhone and it is very cool, but even if I could get skype running on it over WiFi and my home/office wifi broadband connections, I still wouldn't be using the same phone number.
I know this might sound like a T-Mobile ad plant (but check my profile and you'll see I've been around a long time) but I'm just astonished at how pathetic the plans are from the other providers when you compare them to the HotSpot@Home one. For ten bucks you can use as many minutes as you want to from anywhere you can connect to a decent broadband service with wifi.
Seriously, ask yourself how much it would cost you to run up two or three thousand minutes on your phone. I do it every month and it's like $35 for a base plan of a small pool of "tower minutes" I need when I'm not near wifi plus $10 for unlimited wifi minutes.
I'm not bringing this up to say "aren't I cool" or "the iPhone is junk" or any other trolling sort of thing. I'm just really surprised that neither AT&T or Verizon have not had to respond and add the same feature T-Mobile has had for over a year now. The only reason is that not enough people are walking into their local stores and asking for one. Probably because people don't really know about the program T-Mobile offers.
My calls are *crystal* clear, BTW. Not just better than Skype (which isn't actually saying all that much) but even better than normal cell tower calls. It's actually a *superior* call on the VoIP connections than I got with tower connections when I was with AT&T or Verizon.
Save yourself a ton of cash and check it out. Or at least ask the manager at your local Verizon/AT&T when they'll have the same thing so they feel some pressure. Man we are ALL being ripped off so bad on minute charges. -
