░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░ - aptmunich, on 03/30/2008, -2/+26To everyone wondering: This isn't a public iPhone update - it's the firmware version that was included in the latest update to the iPhone SDK...
- ravage86, on 03/30/2008, -0/+14Yes, exactly! And you can't install linux on a Dell because it didn't come with it. What right do I have to choose what is run on my hardware?
Perhaps you like Windows. But unfortunately, your Dell came with Windows Vista. You can't install Windows XP because its wrong to demand that kind of ***** after you buy it, you bought it without XP.
Unfortunately, I picked a Dell that doesn't include Microsoft Office. I guess I can't install it since my computer didn't come with it. Or, is that ok because I spent money? What about if I wanted to install Firefox? It didn't come with it, installing such software is just plain wrong!
I can do whatever the ***** I want with my property. I can't ***** it up by doing ***** they don't support, and demand they fix it.. now that would be wrong. But I can install, run, and modify whatever I want. I bought it. - ble52, on 03/30/2008, -0/+11Look on the top left corner of the iPhone - 'o2 - de'
In Germany iPhone officially works only with T-Mobile, so it IS unlocked. - themonkman, on 03/30/2008, -0/+10I might be wrong, but I believe what he has there is the original 4GB model. Around 700MB is reserved for the built in OS.
- inactive, on 03/30/2008, -4/+13Wrong. This telephone is pwned. It IS unlocked and can run ANY apps.
- mikegcallahan, on 03/30/2008, -1/+9Yet another guy who just read iphone haxxoring 101. Dude, the pwnage project allows you to run your iPhone with ANY compatible carrier and ANY application, unsigned or not. It's not even called jailbreaking anymore, so please read the article, understand what you are talking about and then make your non-irrelevant, actually-on topic comment.
- Focher, on 03/30/2008, -0/+6I have yet to meet a single person who has used devices based on all three of those platforms who doesn't think a Windows Mobile or Symbian based device is anything less than crap compared to the experience of the iPhone. I am not saying those people don't exist, but outside of Digg readers I doubt they are anything more than a statistical anomaly.
- chazuk, on 03/30/2008, -2/+7Why does his iPhone only have a 3.3gb capacity? (Please explain rather than burying as I don't know a thing about iPhone hacking)
- nunofgs, on 03/30/2008, -0/+5huh? the iphone does tv out.
- chubbstar, on 03/30/2008, -6/+10youd think hed clean off the phone a bit before taking some glamor shots
- betterth, on 03/30/2008, -1/+5Let's be fair.
The 6600 runs a ARM 11 369 MHz processor, with 128 MB SDRAM memory. Even with a 2.2" (240x320) non-touch screen, it has a 3.5 hr battery life. It comes with 120MB flash built in, and runs Symbian OS. Also, after looking at both the link you sent, and a spec sheet, it does NOT offer Wi-Fi, which in any decent network, has speeds much higher than 3G.
The iPhone has a 620 MHz ARM 1176, 128 MB DRAM and 8-16GB of built in memory. It has built in Wi-Fi, and an arguably superior OS to Symbian. Also, in addition to touch functionality, it has several gyro, distance and light based sensors to drive additional functionality. It has a 3.0" screen (320x480), as well. The iPhone also has a PowerVR MBX 3D graphics co-processor, of which the 6220 sports no such alternative.
Sure, the 6600 does have features that the iPhone doesn't, namely a 5MP camera (Of course, let's remember that MP is probably 5th on the list for important factors in a digital camera), a "xenon" flash (that probably destroys your battery -- let's be honest here), and some software functionality.
Despite having a smaller screen, the battery life is significantly less for talk time, and they don't post video, internet browsing and flash using battery times. The iPhone has a 24 hour audio play back, 8 hour talk time (almost triple that of the 6220) and 7 hours of video play back time.
It should also be noted that the iPhone uses a 3.5mm audio input jack while the Nokia uses a 2.5mm input jack.
Yes, the 6220 does have a bunch of nice features, such as a high quality camera and 3G connectivity. However, it sports a much weaker battery, no wi-fi connection, a smaller screen, a much slower processor, and no dedicated 3D graphics processor.
They are both, undoubtably good phones, but I still maintain that the iPhone without a 5MP camera and 3G is a better phone. That is of course, a matter of opinion. - inactive, on 03/30/2008, -2/+6The app is not really new. It's in the iPod Touch. It's just that it seems they made it available in the iPhone. However, notice that there are no iTunes Store or Application Store icons in that screenshot (they may be in a second page).
- P5ycHo, on 03/30/2008, -0/+4Give it up Mike.
Can't we all just get along?! - swimzach_2009, on 03/30/2008, -0/+3Umm, Yeah. We do.
- DaffyDuck, on 03/30/2008, -0/+3List out the limitations Apple has placed on SDK apps and tell me how they negatively affect the vast majority of the types of apps people want. I think you'll be surprised that there are still tons of possibilities.
- DaffyDuck, on 03/30/2008, -0/+3That's what it looks like when you use it with greasy fingers. Clean it with a cloth and wash your hands and it'll almost look like new. The chrome surround does tend to scratch easily but that's really not a big deal as the main part, the glass, is difficult to scratch.
- manitoba98xp, on 03/30/2008, -1/+4No, it didn't. It was integrated into the "Phone" application before; they just moved it out into a discrete application. Buried for ignorance.
- biocandy, on 03/30/2008, -1/+4You can find it in any iPhone or Touch by using the Customize app and make the Contacts app visible.
- ThankTheCheese, on 03/30/2008, -1/+3AKAIK the 2.0 update isn't coming until June. I was confused when I read this, too, because it makes it sound as though they have released it already. I presume they are talking about the latest SDK which was released earlier.
- betterth, on 03/30/2008, -0/+2Oops, I called it the "6600" a few times, when clearly it's the 6220. I was looking at the correct specs though. Sorry!
- DaffyDuck, on 03/30/2008, -0/+2The simple answer is that you don't have to sign an AT&T contract to purchase an iPhone. Also:
Unlocking - Allows you to use the phone on any GSM network
Jailbreaking - Allows you to run 3rd party apps
Jailbreaking does not require an unlocked phone. - DaffyDuck, on 03/30/2008, -0/+2No. This is a newer version of the 2.0 software released a couple days ago to developers.
- vtwo, on 03/30/2008, -5/+7So buy that nokia phone then and quit your whining.
The iPhone doesn't have every feature of every other phone on the market, but it's still a great phone. - betterth, on 03/30/2008, -1/+3I've used the 8525. Runs circles around an iPhone. Hardly.
The WM OS is a terrible operating system. The touch functionality is inaccurate at best. The OS is confusing, laggy and attempts to be too similar to the desktop interface to realize that we don't need Windows XP on a phone.
As for "limited SDK", please show me where Windows Mobile offers a full development environment, with on-phone testing tools, phone OS simulation for on-computer testing tools, unified app delivery scheme and free distribution or cheap sale of programs. - hiro, on 03/30/2008, -0/+2No, was replying to the wish list of a poster above but forgot to click the reply button, sorry
- betterth, on 03/31/2008, -0/+2Wow...
Too powerful?
Try again. I HAVE OSX on my phone, but you know what?
Apple decided not to replicate the full OSX GUI on a 3" screen. They said, "well hey, this is a mobile device so it doesn't need menu systems, a start bar and a task bar. Instead of rehashing multi-decade old gui elements on a tiny device, we're going to scrap the conventional GUI, and start from scratch!"
What they created was unarguably the best mobile gui in existance. You can't argue that, because men much smarter and qualified than you have said this.
However, Windows Mobile, in true Microsoft fashion, said "Hey, let's take the Windows XP desktop into photoshop, and resize it to 240x320. Okay! Looks good! Clean it up a bit and we have a cell phone interface!"
Undoubtably new versions of WM will be improved based on the ideas presented in the iPhone OS.
As for a $500 expense that locks me out? I currently code and run anything I want on my phone. I play games that I've downloaded, including a nice little physics simulator. I have an NES emulator and dabble with mario. I have a SCUMM emulator and I still love Curse of Monkey Island. I haven't played with the PS1 emulator, but I've seen it in action and that's pretty bad ass.
Most importantly, I have, bar none, the best mobile browser ever invented. A mobile browser so powerful is makes mobile opera and mobile IE look decades old. There is no broswer that compares -- period.
But hey, keep hating the iPhone. Keep justifying your $500 Windows Mobile phone by an unfounded, virulent hate for all things Apple. It's okay, just like there are Apple fanboys, there are anti-Apple fanboys. Keep following the trend.
As for me, I'll use my iPhone hooked up to my self-built Windows XP gaming system. I understand that it's okay to evaluate products for their pros and cons and buy whatever works the best. I don't hate a company or a product based simply on the company that makes it. - Blizaine, on 03/30/2008, -0/+2I think the guy taking the pic had just eaten a triple meat deluxe pizza.
- arcsbite, on 03/31/2008, -0/+1New Contacts app?
it's been there since 1.1.1 it was just hidden and could be unhidden via customise. - and303, on 03/31/2008, -1/+2Hey *****,
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?fa ...
Your defense is "we don't need Windows XP on a phone"?
Oh ok I see. The 8525 is TOO powerful therefore not as good.
Maybe stop trying to justify your $500 expense on a phone that locks you out of its potential. - themonkman, on 03/30/2008, -0/+1But a win for the consumer! The only thing I worry about with the iPhone is that if it's firmware can be hacked this easily to install unsigned code, that could also lead to websites being crafted to lure iPhone users to the site so that it could brick the phone altogether.
Though it's not like security in Windows Mobile 6 is any better. I just would've expected more from the iPhone because it does run a Unix OS. - mcnearcj, on 03/30/2008, -0/+1http://www.bodyguardz.com/BodyGuardz_for_Apple_iPh ...
- reddikilowatt, on 03/30/2008, -1/+2I prefer buttons over a touch screen, but I guess I'm the exception.
- chazuk, on 03/31/2008, -0/+1I didn't realise there was a 4GB model! Thanks.
- themonkman, on 03/30/2008, -0/+1There are, but they are clunky or cause the iPhone to stick to the walls of your pockets. I know many people with iPhones that don't show such marring. Simply not putting your iPhone in a pocket full of change or keys sounds like common sense, but it looks like the iPhone in the picture belonged to an owner that doesn't have any.
- RATM4EVER, on 03/31/2008, -0/+1Grey Plague!
- Focher, on 03/30/2008, -3/+4Yeah, I am frustrated by the lower speed outside of using wifi (which your vaunted 6220 will most likely not have). If you want to do selective comparison of features based on your individual preferences, that's fine. But that view is exactly why Apple could come out of nowhere and, at a minimum, play with the established players. The iPhone is more than the sum of its parts. That's not to say it doesn't have frustrating shortcomings for many of us, but I have yet to find a single person with one who doesn't love it.
- anebg, on 04/05/2008, -0/+0for anybody that wants the 2.0 firmware for itouch and iphone ..
http://rapidshare.com/users/9KPAD4 - angusware, on 03/30/2008, -3/+3Not a release for the public, just the SDK thing.
- Swift2, on 03/30/2008, -2/+2Well, I dugg the story in tribute to the hackers. Their prevalence is not a knock on the iPhone, but a tribute to its popularity. There is not such a large following for hacking other phones, is there? But in the end, Apple has to be happy, as long as they sell the phones, and as long as they have a clever army of hackers pointing out one security flaw after another. After all, let's be reasonable: to hack the iPhone depends on finding a security flaw. Apple fixes the flaw, and that means either the jailbreakers have to do some hacking to get the phone back, or they forget about the Apple updates. A tiny percentage of people, largely in countries where the iPhone is not officially offered, will use the jailbreak methods. (And I don't really care what PR term they want us to use now.) It's a hard row to hoe. The overwhelming majority will go along with the pristine phones.
Eventually, I'd love to see a completely "free" (network agnostic) iPhone, one that allowed you to use it on any 3G network. Or all of them. But it's like DRM in the iTunes store. Signing an exclusive deal was the best way to enter the market as it is, not as the freetards want it to be. If you want "net neutrality" in cell phones, you're going to have to back legislation and politicians who want to make that happen, or join the hackers. Either way, Apple sells you the phone. - Rauby, on 03/30/2008, -1/+1So true!
- Firespray1138, on 03/30/2008, -1/+1Dugg because I'm loving the iPhone and the iPod Touch right now. Can't wait for the Pwnage tool to come out, very eager to try my iPod Touch with it. Hell after seeing their demo video of the tool, I might just trade it in, pay the difference and get a iPhone. Only problem is that I have Verizon......
- and303, on 03/30/2008, -2/+1What?
Most of the people I see in Europe (especially UK) don't even have color displays. Don't use the iPhone, a snobby device that has just NOW released a limited SDK, as a standard for "mobile freedom in America".
I use an 8525 running Windows Mobile and it runs circles around an iPhone.
Now with the Tilt and the Voyager on the market with live TV and post-3G bandwidth...show me how exactly the European market is 5 years ahead. What am I missing? Hologram phones? - Ryan0617, on 03/30/2008, -2/+1Just a curious question, as you purchase the iphone you are signed up to a pretty expensive contract in my eyes (18months). How would unlocking the firmware be of any benefit (Apart from the installation of 3rd apps), as if you chose to use another sim card, i.e another supplier then you would still be liable to fulfill that contract? Any help would be appreciated, cheers.
- parent, on 03/30/2008, -9/+8I like that apple has a little competition in a place where they normally wouldn't. They must keep updating their OS to keep up with the third party software developers, and vise versa. In the end, the third party guys as well as the bone stock iphone guys win.
- hiro, on 03/30/2008, -6/+4Not really bothered about the GPS or TV out, but along with 3G it MUST have MMS, full BT compatibility and copy/paste or it will remain a failure in the UK
- MrViklund, on 03/31/2008, -5/+21. Who fu***** cares.
2. These hackers should get a life.
3. Buried because of gizmodo.com - thebrokenlight, on 03/30/2008, -5/+2Separate partition would be my guess.
