- notalent420, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2celerityfm, the BBC in London is also having a special Apple event and they are watching the live feed. This is how some places are getting them.
- duranracing, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1New Imacs... Yesss... I just got mine 4 days ago so i shall head over to Apple for a swap. I am not a happy camper. Atleast thats what i will tell them.. HHAHAHA. See you's later heading to the apple store right now.
- 5blocksfree, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1>> Amazon-style peer reviews of music
This ought to be VERY interesting, as it has the real potential to piss off the RIAA even more than it already is. I personally don't care if the RIAA is pissed off, but it could set up a somewhat adversarial situation, as users prod others not to buy certain music - gasp - on its merits, rather than the fact that it happens to be one of 13 others you DON'T want in order to get the one you DO want (the way CDs were designed to work). Interesting times. - aptiva, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1To the naysayers:
As somebody here stated before: "this is *not* the video iPod" Steve was very careful not to emphasize video on the iPod too much. I think the main reason they added video was that sites like digg have been hyping video so much that if they hadn't everyone here would be saying that the new iPod sucked because it didn't have video. So... stfu?
Just think of this as a neat feature to show off to your friends. It's not more expensive than the "old" ipods, it's smaller and it's better. So don't be surprised if video won't drive people to the stores grasping the VIDEO IPOD (omfg s000 cool!!11eleven).... It's just a bonus for the people who do want one anyway, and of course is the final push for many others
p.s. I didn't bother to read all previous comments, so if anyone has already posted something similar, please excuse me - ketha, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I want Frontrow on my current iMAC!!!! This better be hacked by Monday
- spade, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I will restate this, this is still an iPod with video as a bonus. This is not a video iPod. When more studios/content sign up with the store you will see a 16x9 aspect ratio device. Hopefully by then battery technology will also catch up.
Geesh, you know you can still watch content on your computer. There are somethings that you can't watch on cable and TV, such as TWIT and Digg. If ESPN did video podcast of highlights so I can watch it later I'd love that. This might spur on orignial only content by professionals and others to place content up. How about that Notre Dame/USC game this Saturday, love to carry that around on an iPod. But I'll wait, as every good Apple users now, 3rd generation products are the sweet spot, okie, maybe 2nd. :) Counting the days to MWSF '06. - ndm007, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1looks like my 30GB photo is heading to eBay...
- luigi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1iTunes 6 is for real!
here are the big changes: firstly, 'gifting' - you can buy music for other people, who get an email telling them to download. Next: customer reviews - Amazon-style peer reviews of music. - Lumiras, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1come on, where's the subscription iTunes?
- timbtwisted, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Maybe I can offer a few suggestions for some problems people have cited.
1. no firewire – simple it’s cheaper to offer one format in the box and sell to both windows and mac user, keep in mind most windows users do not have firewire. Even though in my opinion they should.
2. 1.99 a video. Think about the bandwidth cost on this for a moment people not to mention it’s premium content that the networks will want to see a sizable return on.
3. No updates to powerbooks or desktops. We know two things, the intel chips are being introduced next year and they are starting with the low end first. Why would you expect an intel announcement then? If anything it would have only been a minor g5 or 4 speed bump, nothing worth a big announcement and nothing worth upgrading too either.
4. Why video ipod? Wouldn’t it be nice for those that have to take the bus or subway to work? How about on the plane? Yeah you could use your laptop but an iPod fits in your pocket. In my case, I want to watch tv at work and in class haha, you gotta love that thought.
5. Why version 6 of iTunes? Why not? It’s just a number why do you all care so much. Oh no it’s version 6 and not 5.3, give me a break. - felchdonkey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I've been downloading shows on BT, not because I don't want to pay for them, but because no one was selling them. I don't feel like paying $60 a month for cable when all I want is two or three shows.
I'll be glad to pay $1.99 a show. I hope they hurry up and sign with NBC so I can get My Name Is Earl... - icupg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i can't get on to apple.com. . .nooooooooooooooooooooooooo
- ndm007, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0apple.com will crash any moment. 100000000000000000000000 people on there
- robotplague, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I think Apple is trying to confuse the average consumer who is in the market for an ipod.
- jhunt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0No TV shows available on Canadian iTMS. *****.
- holdemcharts, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"It would be cool if you could record tv onto your ipod.. like a vcr."
Check out the announcement of the new EchoStar
http://www.broadcastingcable.com/article/CA6268924.html?display=Breaking+News&referral=SUPP - .mark, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Wow...Apple's killing the rumors by coming out with a product for every rumor...
- dgath, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0how funny is this now. Apparently the RIAA is demanding iTunes songs go up in price and they get a larger cut than the 70 cents on the dollar they are getting now. So now... the MPAA (who makes most of the TV shows) are only going to charge $2 per episode for TV shows that typically cost upwards of $30 million per season to produce. Divide that in half as each season typically has 22-24 episodes, that is 10-12 episodes (same number of tracks on a CD) for $1 each on something that cost $15 million to produce. I don't think the RIAA is spending anywhere near $15 million per crappy album they produce.
- Aero1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Video playback time: Up to 2 hours when fully charged"
- Aero1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0that sucks!
- jesusphreak, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yeah, 2 hours seems very lacking.
- ThomasNewman1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Right now you can't see the library of videos or SEE any previews. This isn't good. Oh and the free download of the week isn't wokring.
- hmvh1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0im guessing if it doesnt play in quicktime it wont play on the ipod video...pretty *****.
- FunHeadlines, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The 4:3 screen is because this is about TV shows, which are 4:3. When the full portable video player is one day announced, no doubt it will be widescreen.
Today's announcement is not about watching shows on the iPod. It's about video out to your (or your buddy's) TV. It's a stop-gap measure to get people off Steve's back about wanting a video iPod. Fine, he said, here's an iPod. Put your music on it, and your pictures, and your notes, and oh yeah, throw some TV shows and music videos on there too, if that's your thing.
When the time is right, and the movie companies are on board about selling their movies cheap, I suspect we will then see the actual video iPod, and in widescreen format. - rghill, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0What's the resolution on the video file? And what is the file type from iTunes?
- videoguy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0this is so cool!!!
- KAMI_no_kodomo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I they diliver Call For Help in Europe I will buy one!
- ketha, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0so Frontrow ISN'T available on all macs... that sucks!
- anagami, on 07/02/2008, -0/+0http://www.apple.com/imac/
- videoguy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0and at $1.99 tv show downloads doesn't sound to bad either...
- Danathar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'm sorry...I just don't see the point of paying 2 bucks to watch a TV show on a 320x200 portable screen. You can't watch it while driving (for obvious reasons). You can't watch it while walking (for obvious reasons). It's too small and too expensive.
And so far NO Powerbook upgrades!!?
##!!?? - kenadak, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Mpeg 4 and H.264 compatible... not just quicktime... hopefully Xvid (as I've been watching Xvid Systm and DLTV on my Palm for about a month.)
- BlueStarr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Front Row looks bad ass! Holy Crap!
- Darkspyder86, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0wheres quicktime 7.0.3
- Dhalgren, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0http://www.apple.com has been updated
- Scopitone, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Wonder if Disney will dump ads onto the downloads...
- ketha, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0UK POV: where's the promised BBC content... man with BBC and Channel 4 both being public interest (in a sense) and with the UK not having such a greedy TV industry this thing could work really well...
What I want to know is WHY OH WHY did the new ipod interface not mimic Frontrow more... all that colour screen and it's still the same old ipod interface. - pophysis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@timbtwisted
diggnation on the ipod sweet thought - 3Den, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yay apple.
How about you update your laptops to the current decade? They don't even have to be faster...
Just add some higher resolution, higher contrast screens, and maybe a few other odds and ends.. because right now your laptops are just not worth it. - jesusphreak, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I don't want a widescreen iPod - it would be too big, imo. I think this is excellent in how you can easily just plug it up to a TV screen and watch.
- celerityfm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Heh. Did anyone else notice that the U2 iPod is gone now?
And, notalent420- thanks for that tidbit, very insightful sir. - ndm007, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0the new iPod has gone up by £10 ($18) in the UK.
- spade, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Is anyone going to buy an episode today, that's if 7.0.3 comes out? You know, just for the novelty. I hope Apple keeps goods records, because if I can't burn the shows to backup and somehow my drive dives I want to download again.
- spade, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I believe the video will scale, you can hook it up to your tv, still waiting for qt 7.0.3 though to make sure.
- hmvh1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i want it to play any video in my collection, i dont think it can do it... linux ipod anyone?
- kaka, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0OFFICIAL IPOD VIDEO STORY HERE:
http://digg.com/apple/iPod_Video_on_Apple_s_Site.
took a while to find it since it's buried under DUPES. - ThomasNewman1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Quicktime 7.0.3 IS OUT. It came with my iTunes download.
- alecks, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0So... here's a question. If i buy an episode of Lost, and watch it inside iTunes... will it be a higher res than 320x240?
- ndm007, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0anybody ordered iMac or iPod yet
- timbtwisted, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0friggin apple I tell you. They keep blasting us with undoubtly cool stuff this year. They're doing a great job maintaining it's customer base in a time of transition. Impressive. By the way, I have a feeling we'll be hacking the $hit out of the new ipod. Then again watching diggnation on my ipod would be cool ot begin with.
