Kevin Rose Eats Funny Red Pills Again, Predicts iPhone 3G
gizmodo.com — After being absolutely wrong wrong wrong (WRONG) about the first iPhone, Digg's Kevin Rose has now settled down for the obvious: he says that the 3G version of the JesusPhone will have a camera on the front for video-conferencing with other 3G iPhone and Macintosh iChat users. Most probably, he is right about this, but not about the rest of his pre

- BrendanSheehan, on 03/24/2008, -16/+47I personally don't need or want a camera on the front. 3G yes, camera.. meh no. More storage, 3G web-browsing speeds, GPS, longer batter life? Yeah
- grifta67, on 03/24/2008, -7/+7I second the anti-camera thought. Perhaps the iPhone has made the concept of speakerphone usable, but any time I've used one, cell phone or landline, I just get annoyed!
- mem2, on 03/24/2008, -3/+8lame title & lame story.

- Myztry, on 03/24/2008, -2/+9It's a standard 3G phone feature. For some strange reason they think people want to pay extra to show the world bed hair and a messy house
- Goblin, on 03/24/2008, -1/+4Is that why Diggnaton is free?
- rossisdead, on 03/24/2008, -0/+1Don't you get it? People want to be able to have video calls that take place entirely from the MySpace Photo Angle
- Myztry, on 03/25/2008, -0/+1Oh my god. There's a naked ______ in your house...
(As in the similar youTube clip)
- Me1000, on 03/24/2008, -2/+10the only way you will get a 3G phone with a GPS AND better battery life is if the phone was about half an inch thicker!
- johnpaul191, on 03/24/2008, -0/+2agreed. might as well ask for some perpetual motion device that will spin a little generator. it's just a fact that batteries are a limiting factor for a lot of those other features, and they have not made major leaps in the last year in terms of what Apple could actually spec.
- damonic, on 03/24/2008, -4/+2My biggest concern with a 3G phone is the coverage. 3G is not widespread, yet...
- Rauby, on 03/24/2008, -0/+4Not so much in US. But much more in EU!
- johnpaul191, on 03/24/2008, -1/+1they have a point. odds are the iPhone is too slim to have 3G and EDGE (as a backup), so if you are out of 3G you may be hosed. I assume that's as true now as it was last year when people listed reasons we didn't see 3G in iPhone1.0
- Myztry, on 03/25/2008, -0/+2My Motorola Razr V6 has 3G, Edge, dual screens and dual cameras. Despite being a clam shell, it's quite thin. Not much different in thickness than an iPhone from what I can gather.
- Myztry, on 03/25/2008, -0/+4It's everywhere in Australia. For quite some time. Must be close to 5 years for the "3" network. But now it's with all the carriers.
- Jholder112233, on 03/25/2008, -0/+1Same in the UK.
- virtualball, on 03/24/2008, -3/+3Camera on the front? God no. A lot of people video chat on the computer but MANY MORE don't. I think people would rather comfortably take pictures of monuments and other things with their camera phones then they would of themselves on video chat. This just in, MySpace whores are loving this idea!
- cgomez, on 03/25/2008, -0/+4...if this happened, there would also be one on the back.
- secleinteer, on 03/24/2008, -0/+2Sorry about the comment hijack, but for those of you interested in the Japanese blog that Kevin mentions about 15 minutes into this Diggnation episode but doesn't say what it's called because Alex had to be a bitch and tell him to keep it a secret, this is it: http://asiajin.com/blog/2008/03/18/www-has-another ... . That's the post he was referring to in which the author explained that "www" in Japanese means "lol".

- JEWestbrookJR, on 03/24/2008, -2/+44Did any one even watch diggnation when he was talking about these predictions this week? He made it extremely clear that these were RUMORS not predictions of his. He almost didn't even say it because he didn't want people thinking that he is shouting from the mountain tops that this is 100% for sure what is in store for the iphone.
- blazes816, on 03/24/2008, -3/+7Didn't he also say that he heard this from an 'inside man'?
- kingo123, on 03/24/2008, -2/+17He said on diggnation he is not sure if it's true and it's rumours only....I mean wtf is wrong with you people. I still digg your comment Bryan... only because Kevin actually did get pwnd, as he said NOT to submit this story to digg :D
- killerofkiller, on 03/25/2008, -1/+1rofl remember is original iPhone predictions that he heard from a 'source'.. "it will have a pull out qwerty keyboard and 2 batteries! one for the phone and one for the ipod!!!"
- JEWestbrookJR, on 03/25/2008, -1/+1Ever heard of conceptional designs and redesigns? Even the "Inside sources" change their plans.

- digitallysick, on 03/24/2008, -11/+13at&t may not ever get a 3G iphone, think, if everyone has 3g that's bandwidth. And Bandwidth is money.
- 4d669, on 03/24/2008, -5/+3and if everyone is already an AT&T client, then it will be easier for people to conform to censored internet and the death of net neutrality with no boycott options available. (other than not using a crappy phone that everyone likes)
- gettempapa, on 03/24/2008, -0/+5That makes no sense at all. Why would they even create the network if they don't want customers to use it?
- iofthestorm, on 03/24/2008, -1/+3Telcos don't make sense at all.
- cgomez, on 03/25/2008, -0/+5"And Bandwidth is money." Yes, and that's why a data plan is not free.
What the **** are you talking about?- digitallysick, on 03/26/2008, -0/+1If all iphone users were on 3g imagine the network strain, at&t might even have to upgrade the whole network. So why do that, when they can sucker everyone into edge, they save money and win

- nbeighley, on 03/24/2008, -5/+27i seem to remember something about his original predictions before the iphone was launched....let's see....something like: two batteries, one for the phone, one for the ipod???? About the only thing he did get right was the fact that, yes indeed, there was going to be an iPhone!
No disrespect to Kevin, but I'm not holding my breath for 3G and Video Conferencing...- TimmyGUNZ, on 03/24/2008, -1/+17I think you remember that because they reminded you in the article.

- Dumbledorito, on 03/24/2008, -5/+24A "videophone" cell phone would need some amazing face-tracking software or a means to keep the camera stationary in relation to the face of the caller... Or the phone could dispense Drammamine along with any incoming call.
- corduroy, on 03/24/2008, -0/+12there are plenty of phones out there with video calling that work well. i don't think iphone v2 would need amazing face-tracking software.
- Dumbledorito, on 03/24/2008, -2/+1I'm not quibbling over bandwidth or resolution or anything, if that's your assumption. I'm thinking of how the average person can't even hold a camcorder steady when they're trying to do so. Wouldn't you find a "shaky-cam" phone call distracting, at the very least?
- gettempapa, on 03/24/2008, -0/+5It's much easier to shoot yourself in the head than it is to shoot a target. Same goes for a camera.

- ross., on 03/24/2008, -0/+11Why do Americans not get that the rest of the world has been using video phones for the last THREE YEARS?? Its not the freakin bat phone people, just another feature people get sick of and don't use often.
- Enron, on 03/25/2008, -1/+2Maybe they don't use it often because nobody has made an intuitive video phone.
- ross., on 03/25/2008, -1/+2Video calling either works or it doesn't. That like saying voice calling hasn't caught on yet because no one has made an intuitive way to dial.
- Burn, on 03/25/2008, -0/+5And then some, we had Video Mobiles here in Australia at least 4 years ago.

- LiquidIse, on 03/24/2008, -5/+225Gizmodo taking jabs at Kevin.. thats ironic, without Digg what would their Adsense checks look like?
- Kronos6948, on 03/24/2008, -8/+43Dunno, considering a lot of us use Adblock Plus.
- Alfredosauce, on 03/25/2008, -0/+1Shhh. Adblock what. I have no idea what you're talking about.

awesome, douchemodo- illegalcortex, on 03/24/2008, -7/+2He could have probably avoided having it submitted by not creating digg...
- taybone, on 03/24/2008, -7/+101I believe Kevin said specifically to NOT submit his prediction to digg...
*sigh*- faralen, on 03/25/2008, -5/+3Oh my goodness. I can't believe you might actually be seriously exasperated. Oh my goodness. Someone ignored some random person on the internet. Oh my goodness.
- passedoutghost, on 03/25/2008, -1/+1Precisely because it's a ***** RUMOUR. He admitted himself that he was most likely wrong.
- tnoy, on 03/25/2008, -1/+3I, like I'd bet 90% of the users of digg, dont give a ***** about what Kevin has to say about anything.
- xshepx, on 03/24/2008, -6/+117Didn't the last episode of Diggnation when he said this also involve him saying something along the lines of: I am probably 99% wrong so don't submit this to Digg?
- 4d669, on 03/24/2008, -1/+8Instead of writing this comment, you and everyone else should be burying this crap.

Buried. - mark076h, on 03/24/2008, -3/+22many people submitted this, but it takes Gizmodo to make front page, days after Kevin said this.
- KenMing, on 03/24/2008, -2/+15Hard to make a prediction when Jobs himself said it and AT&T reiterated it as well.
- ross., on 03/24/2008, -0/+1Steve said he's adding video calls? Source?
- faralen, on 03/25/2008, -1/+1It actually makes predicting easy. Just stupid, pointless and redundant.

The useful thing it does now is seamlessly integrate with your mac and is better online phonewise than anything I've seen. But it is mostly annoying for what it should have and doesn't. I bought one for my wife and it is useful for her, but I'm waiting.
- dizilbdog, on 03/24/2008, -2/+5N95 are still way too expensive. A new one is like 700 dollars that is crazy. Nokia would have a bigger market here if they lowered the prices.

- passedoutghost, on 03/25/2008, -0/+0Well in Australia we can't get the iPhone yet, so I'm sticking with my n95. It's only about $650 AUD here so I can't imagine how much cheaper that is in the U.S.

- Rdsflip863, on 03/24/2008, -1/+9Screw the webcam bs. I just want 3G damnit. Also maybe lower prices? I'm a broke digger goddamnit!
- noseeme, on 03/24/2008, -4/+2Did you know there are other phones besides the iPhone? Lots of them get 3G now, and tons of those 3G phones are free when you renew your contract! EPIPHANY!
- Rdsflip863, on 03/24/2008, -1/+2Yea but none are clearly as nice as the iphone. Show me one phone that even shows the internet in a resolution thats decent and understandable for its size. Plus features such as touch zoom help navigating on the iphone. I have a palm treo 650 (Yes thats how poor I am...This ***** is so old its painful to call on it) and the internet is absolute *****.
- yetAnotherCroc, on 03/25/2008, -0/+1LG Viewty? Sony Ericsson Xperia? There are plenty of newer phones around

- Binzokun, on 03/24/2008, -0/+13If anyone that read about that insider story on the creation of the iPhone, you would know that there was all kinds of different prototypes floating around Apple so no one had an idea of what the final product looked like. Kevin just got his information from a guy with a certain type of the prototype. The guy probably got his ass fired though.
Oh wait, this article is from Gizmodo? that's all there needs to be said about this. - pauldy, on 03/24/2008, -2/+3I think digg should install a filter that changes anything gizmodo into douchemodo. I can't believe there are still tardos going to that website after all the stuff they get wrong. Now they are going to write up a piece talking trash about something that was clearly prefaced as rumor and probably incorrect. Didn't they predict the Apple iPhone release that ended up being the Cisco iPhone? I don't even know why I bothered commenting on this I won't even read after I learned they get paid by exposures.
- al11588, on 03/24/2008, -8/+3The iphone is on deathwatch so i am sticking with my 1998 beeper. Windows FTW
- barandon0D9, on 03/24/2008, -0/+2Deathwatch? Love it or hate it, you can't deny its popularity. Deathwatch is quite a stretch.
- skadd, on 03/24/2008, -9/+3
digg users faps to kevin rose... and diggs anything about him! OH MY GOD IS THAT KEVIN ROSE!??? DUGG +
I also have self esteem issues and love to digg peoples comments down down DOWN!!!! - mechcon, on 03/24/2008, -0/+3For extra lulz, the diggnation mob should come down to Australia for the launch of the iPhone (also the official Apple stores), by then, it SHOULD (hopefully) be released here in 3G/HSDPA, since we're moving forward with technology, as opposed to squeezing as much as U.S. telcos can with 2.5G/EDGE :P
- noseeme, on 03/24/2008, -0/+1The phones you get for free with signing up for a contract have had 3G for a year and a half now, here in the states. It's not the country that's not moving forward, it is just the self absorbed combination of AT&T and Apple that is not.
- Haydio, on 03/25/2008, -0/+1Hopefully 3.5G in Australia, 7.2Mbps would be nice.
- tetraelement, on 03/24/2008, -1/+7I understand that there are many annoying Kevin Rose fan boys that treat his word as that of a god. However he is the creator of Digg and a popular internet personality. He is a smart man and provides us with a great podcast, Diggnation.
However, why are people acting like he is a reliable source for what is on the pipeline. Yes he attends many conferences and is on the front line of technology, but honestly, who cares if he is right or not about any predictions. Many bloggers and internet sites make predictions everyday about upcoming technology and yet for some reason Gizmodo finds the need to bring up predictions and contrast them to Kevin's predictions now, even after he said not to hold him to his predictions.- underpants, on 03/24/2008, -4/+2You're Alex A., right? Lawlz. Also dugg for Kevin deciding to still go with that shaggy comb over look. :P
- ericdano, on 03/24/2008, -2/+1Wait, are we talking about the same podcasts? Great? Hardly. Alex would do better trying to get a stable gig at G4 than those lame podcasts.
- jayselle, on 03/27/2008, -0/+1Digg, Inc. is not very far from Apple headquarters so I would imagine he knows quite a few people that work there and probably a couple with insider knowledge. Apple purposefully uses misdirection on it's employees as they know leaks will happen, however, often the leaks prove to be pretty close to the truth.
I enjoy Diggnation too.
- eggyacid, on 03/24/2008, -1/+2ouch kevin, maybe NDA should be added to your dictionary.
- meropealcyone, on 03/25/2008, -0/+0ffs, reporting a ***** rumor is not covered by any NDA.
- darksydxx, on 03/24/2008, -1/+1I hope we don't get banned for digging this.
