- timdorr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+16And timed to zoom into the page like the zoom feature in OS X. AND it's timed to match his typing in the terminal. AND timed to follow his mouse movements around the screen.
Sorry, but this is real. The MacBook Pro has ambient light sensors on the top of the left and right speaker. Next time you're near one, put your hands over both and the backlit keyboard should kick in. He's just taping into that hardware to signal a trigger. It's no different from me hitting a key on my keyboard, it's just a different kind of input. The desktop manager is very much real, as I use it myself, so I don't see it as being a stretch to hook it up to the light sensor. - SloppyJoe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14Cool but doesn't seem practical, looks like its too sensitive to me.. like if you just pass your hand over the side, perhaps to pick something up, you switch desktops.. would get annoying.
- geminitojanus, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12Jedi desktop switch? Not as cool as mind tricks, but it's certainly better on your mac than slapping it.
- SpyDerMann, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11This isn't the desktop you're looking for. *waves hand*
- keithzd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11Actually, that could be good technology...
The BOSS SENSOR!!! As soon as someone walks behind you and casts that shadow, it switches to a screen of a spreed sheet to make it look like you were working when we all know that you were on Digg just a moment ago. - KissTheRing, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11I liked the old method better. The slapping had a more tactile feel.
- X111, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Except for the fact that a MacBook doesn't have an ambient light sensor ofcourse... that's only on the Pro models.
- altempo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7command-option-8, then command-option-(-) or (=) to zoom out and in, respectively.
- Boondoggle, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6pharma?

"6/10: ["slapping your computer across the face is not good karma" -- aneeley] Now, there's a less violent version. Code forthcoming." - mastercheif, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5 My Macbook and my hand thank you for this.
- brownspank, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4If only you could do the same to the salesperson selling you the Mac...
- microbreak, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Many cameras have auto white balance built into them, and the way the screen changes from a lighter web page to a screen with a black window triggers the camera to adjust it's light settings. That's all.
This feature helps when you are pointing at a person standing in front of a bright light/sunny window, and then you turn the camera around into a portion of a room without a window in the shot. The camera will adjust the light settings to make the picture viewable.
Now go Digg - gadgetjunkie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3If waving your hand is too much like hard work you could use Sidetrack to assign trackpad hot corners to switch Virtue screens left and right etc. (no affiliation, just a satisfied user).
- soopafly, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I'm still waiting for my ClapBook..
Clap on *clap* *clap*
Clap off *clap* *clap* - NoSalt, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Earl would be proud.
- illt, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6a little more useful [with a lot more karma] than smaking your monitor, but still. why lift your hand from the keyboard when you can just assign a shortcut and save time. (albiet not much, but it adds up)
- probeta, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@noeljohnhoward
turn your Key Repeat Rate up (System Preferences>Keyboard & Mouse>Keyboard) - keithzd, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Things like this make it so I can't wait to get a MacBook Pro. I only have to do this paper route for 5 more years before I have the money to afford one.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Where is the code? And I thought that the light sensor was on the right hand side only?
- probeta, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2sometimes I wish I could digg stuff in levels- for me personally, this is a 3/5 digg- I don't want to give it a full dig but I like.
- 500freestyle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Nifty.
- chrisgiddings, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I believe this one to be true, as I do with the prior video. There's no reason that if DeliciousMonster can make your iSight read barcodes, that these guys couldn't use the HDD safety mechanisms to judge which side the force is coming from so they can switch desktops. And the ambient light sensors in the laptops make it easy to do what they're doing here as well. It's no complicated. I don't even need to see there code to understand how they did it.
- antoniojvr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Where is this sensor located and how sensitive is it? I don't want some guy to cast a shadow on my laptop and change the screen I'm working on...
- ATLBeer, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Hold on... Hold on.... How did he zoom into the text there? I've been looking for functionality like that for a while.
How is that magic done? - moosebumps, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I believe it, but where's the code?!
- brownspank, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"why lift your hand from the keyboard when you can just assign a shortcut and save time. (albiet not much, but it adds up)"
Now where's the fun in that? If I could wave my hand to gesture letters or words to type, that would be awesome. :) - Jerk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Very cool. The people in doubt have obviously never used a late-model Powerbook or MacBook Pro. Hopefully the code will run on the Powerbooks like slapbook did.
- ideascratch, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It may be stupid .. but it's cool..
- coldfusion1970, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I just dugg it for the zoom in/out feature.
I'm enabling that on my iMac now. - zenghost, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1man if this is true... we'll be looking like comp users in minority report in no time...
- TinFoil209, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Cool, now when their's a bunch of MacBook Pros in a room with this software ill just turn the lights off and on real quick to F with them. Its like the commercial when the guy is trying to drink his coffee in the car and the driver keeps stopping short when he tries to take a drink. Cool beans, I guess.
- malier, on 01/18/2009, -0/+1karma it will come back and get ya.
http://taintedshade.com/ - noeljohnhoward, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1his zoom is alot quicker than that. it seems to e different
- Mesach, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I block youtube at my work because the managers asked for it, too many people were surfing it all day watching videos, we block all sorts of things only a few of which are pharma related.
- hesamp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The site mentioned in the video (http://blog.medallia.com/karma/) states that the code will be up later today. Hopefully we'll be able to try this out soon...
- wardboro, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Will your desktop switch when you turn off the lights? I assume the sensor is sensitive enough to use in the dark?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I agree.
Smackbook > Wavebook - Ireland, on 10/12/2007, -7/+7If this is true it's cool, but I think we're being had?
- odyss3y, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1what about if youre working in a building and someone opens the door to the brighter outside world? or if youre a passenger in a car and youre passing trees. or ... if ... youre at a fireworks show for the 4th of july?
its interesting, i'll give it that, but i certainly wouldnt ever use it. - igraham09, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1THANK YOU! THATS BITCHIN!
- Rabid_Llama, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1I still think these things are all stupid. When I want to change desktops, I don't want to take my hand off of the keyboard. If you switch desktops often, you're probably doing something important on them, so you'll want the keyboard option. If you're not switching desktops often, why do you even care?
- kgool, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0Cool, but you can see how careful he has to be with his hand placement. Probably not practical, but digg it for the asthetics.
- EBFoxbat, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1Like youtube can't be pharma-related... stupid IT.
- Twinked, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1Bah stupid IT Nazis!! Can't view the page.. I'll Digg it anyways.
- blurtheimage, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1The whole thing looks pretty shady to me. What's with the change of exposures during the transitions?
Sorry. No Digg - thogue, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1haha. Saw on the youtube yest. glad it made front page. good ... digg
- alej744, on 10/12/2007, -6/+1shut up dickturd
- xamox, on 10/12/2007, -9/+4It looks like XGL to me that is timed to switch screens
- captainbluebear, on 10/12/2007, -12/+0This is handy for people with iMacs, correct? We can't use the sudden motion sensor, can we? So this could be a godsend for people who want *fast* useer switching without going through the trouble of setting up some obscure keyboard reference.

What is Digg?
