"John Mayer Here" Works, Gets Direct Apple Reply to Anyone
gizmodo.com — Hey Guys, John Mayer here. I just wanted to tell you that if you mention my name in your Mac OS X software crash report, it seems that there are real chances of you getting a direct reply from Apple Support, just like it happened to me. A Gizmodo reader did it and he got a reply straight away from the good people at Apple Support:

- maxthreepwood, on 04/12/2008, -3/+19OK, that's it. I'm starting every single bug report with that phrase from now on.
- daRoach, on 04/12/2008, -8/+25Do Mac users have do do a lot of bug reporting?
- TheKrillr, on 04/12/2008, -5/+14Every use should have to do a lot of bug reporting. Sadly on most systems when something crashes there's no dialog to submit a good bug report, and nobody knows how to use them.
Let's face it, all software has bugs and all software WILL crash at some point. Modern software is simply too complex to NOT crash. It's just a matter of when, how, and what caused it.- Rikkochet, on 04/12/2008, -2/+6This isn't an automated crash report - someone is going out of their way and create a trouble ticket. That's way, way, way too much work for any paying user. Make it work or adjust your dev process until you can. There's no excuse for software to completely crap out.
- A developer that doesn't make excuses- TheKrillr, on 04/12/2008, -3/+4*A developer that's in denial about bugs
Most popular software is used on such a variety of systems in such a variety of circumstances that every bug cannot possibly be accounted for and tested for. If you really think that you can, you're in some pretty bad denial. Yes, there are coding and testing practices to minimize the number of unforeseen bugs, but there will ALWAYS be bugs which you cannot test for.
Anyone who uses software and encounters a bug SHOULD go out of their way to make sure the creator knows about it. Whether you've paid for the product or not. Even more so if you've paid for it really, because you're paying for someone to fix them.
Also on a majority of systems there are lots of reasons for software to "completely crap out." Incompatible/broken libraries that are not under the control of the software creator, incompatible hardware when it comes to apps which access graphics cards and the like, compiler options that may create instabilities with newer processors.

- xtraa, on 04/13/2008, -0/+5I don't want to know what 'Steve Ballmer here' would do to my mail.
- Pimpalicious316, on 04/14/2008, -0/+1I actually did this on a mozilla crash. i didn't get any reply from the bug fixer people, but it may have provided a good laugh for them.

- ennTOXX, on 04/12/2008, -21/+9I was surprised to find out that apple chose him. I thought apple had better taste in music, I mean, apples taste better than John Mayer's music. But on the serious side, WTF apple when are you getting back to my reports?... :||
- tehjarvis, on 04/12/2008, -14/+13Judging solely from their commercials...Apple has HORRIBLE taste in music.
- TheWorm, on 04/13/2008, -1/+1The keyword is taste. They differ. I like most of the music in their commercials.
- djholybolt, on 04/12/2008, -1/+2apparently you didn't put "John Mayer Here" in your report..
- Chrino, on 04/12/2008, -0/+1I dunno, John Mayer's music tastes pretty good.

- userperson, on 04/13/2008, -1/+2It's been about 20-something hours, for now, it's currently holding its own... in the butt.
- Blackie24, on 04/12/2008, -14/+9Hey John,
I tried using your name in an error send report on Vista.... except they replied with a "F&%^ You!". Looks like microsoft just doesn't have the same customer service! lol.- LyKwId, on 04/12/2008, -8/+4Of course the Mac fanboy wastes no time to take a shot at Microsoft. Even though Microsoft is nowhere to be mentioned......
- Blackie24, on 04/12/2008, -5/+0Screw you Lykwid..... I'm going home!
- Blandyman, on 04/13/2008, -0/+1Please don't reference a seven-year-old South Park quote.
- TheKrillr, on 04/12/2008, -3/+6It's called a joke. You're supposed to laugh and shrug it off, not take it personally and seriously.
- Sabazou, on 04/12/2008, -2/+7And jokes are supposed to be funny
- TheKrillr, on 04/12/2008, -2/+3It was, if only slightly.
- Sabazou, on 04/12/2008, -2/+7And jokes are supposed to be funny

- Ocelot13, on 04/12/2008, -20/+6but but... apple software is perfect, there shouldnt be a need to email support.
- pigducksheep, on 04/12/2008, -0/+4There is if you happen to be John Mayer, which is a lot of people apparently.
- djholybolt, on 04/12/2008, -0/+2I Loll'd my pants reading that one
- mal1964, on 04/12/2008, -2/+6This is good!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ns0tW4c95aM- evfinkelstein, on 04/12/2008, -0/+7I'm surprised this wasn't a rick roll.
- TaylorTAP, on 04/12/2008, -1/+4LOL, everybody is gun shy over youtube links now. No, thanks to RickRoll & 4chan. It was 4chan that started this crap wasn't it?
- Spizzat2, on 04/13/2008, -0/+0No, it was actually Rick Astley. He felt he needed a comeback.
- Rizzler, on 04/12/2008, -1/+8I'm trying this too. Only, I'm going to try this with Microsoft. Oh, and I'll probably say I'm someone else. Bono maybe? Well, I've seen him on iPods. Who isn't controlled by apple?
- humanerror, on 04/12/2008, -0/+11YOU ARE THE LAST ONE
- gtluke, on 04/12/2008, -10/+14apple commercials told me that mac products don't have errors, whats going on here?
- CarStan, on 04/12/2008, -4/+3they were obviously playing the new 'Windows Vista'. You can't blame Apple for third party game publishers
- firstpost, on 04/13/2008, -0/+1vid/pic or it didn't happen
- kreatre2007, on 04/12/2008, -7/+4I'm sure that once they are aware that it's not really John Mayer emailing them, they aren't too happy. It's this sort of abuse of the system that makes large companies erect huge barriers between their executive offices and the customer. This is funny but we shouldn't do this. There's nothing wrong with taking your complaint to the highest levels of a company but, do it responsibly. I have a new MacBook Pro because I used the system properly. Apple takes care of their customers when you give them a chance to do so.
- kreatre2007, on 04/13/2008, -2/+2Why in the ***** are people digging me down on this???
- Guzer, on 04/12/2008, -7/+1I heard that John mayer posted something here and he got tons of thumbs ups. Could I get the same service and thumbs up my comment? testing the theory....
- uncle_jesse, on 04/12/2008, -3/+5Hey, John Mayer here. I see a new fad to replace Rick Roll'ing...
- mizike, on 04/12/2008, -1/+2Hmm, maybe i'll try this next time Cisco's wonderful VPN client randomly gives me a kernel panic...why I can't just use apple's, actually functional, built in VPN client is beyond me....stupid network admins....
- polyGone, on 04/12/2008, -2/+8That is actually my name. To make it even weirder, I use a Mac. Odd......
- mlagana, on 04/12/2008, -5/+2mayer shmayer
- soulodahl, on 04/12/2008, -5/+6HI John Mayer here, does any one else sense that I am terribly pretentious and a bit too into myself?
- DNABeast, on 04/13/2008, -0/+2Nah, You're thinking of Ben Lee. John Mayer's totally personable.
- Kaervek, on 04/12/2008, -0/+3Great...so much for having Apple Support all to my lonesome.
- TheGooseyOne, on 04/12/2008, -0/+3That's enough, John Mayer.
- jgerry, on 04/12/2008, -1/+9You shouldn't have to use a celebrity's name just to get good service.
- Atomic1fire, on 04/12/2008, -0/+3how bout somebody use the name for every company
see what happens - macmangb, on 04/13/2008, -2/+2Good Apple service as always!
- vibrate, on 04/13/2008, -3/+2Mac OS X software *what* report?
PS your music is derivative ***** - leahpee, on 04/13/2008, -0/+4Hi Apple. I'm better than John Mayer. Do you want my autograph?
- omaryak, on 04/13/2008, -0/+4It couldn't be that he included an e-mail address, could it? Going out on a limb here...
- batmanz, on 04/13/2008, -3/+2Of course Apple has good customer service, seeing how they have about 8 customers.
- Macskeeball, on 04/13/2008, -0/+7Hi, I'm Steve Jobs. Fix this, or you're fired.
- lharrod, on 04/13/2008, -1/+2"Al Gore here" works better than "Rush here."
- roarus, on 04/13/2008, -1/+5"I'm ***** Ben Affleck"
- tomis, on 04/13/2008, -1/+3If you've written a detailed enough account of the situation, there isn't any need for a follow-up. And as someone else pointed out, the only way Apple would know how to contact you is if you specifically gave them contact info in the bug report. I'll bet most people just hit "Report" or "Ignore" and restart the app.
- mlerner, on 04/13/2008, -0/+1Someone should try the Queen of England next. I heard she has an iPod.
- ronfez, on 04/13/2008, -0/+2Did anyone tell you this is John Mayer calling?
- FIoR1Da, on 04/14/2008, -0/+2Hi, Peppy Hare here. My MacBook is doing a barrel roll!
