- DanielQ, on 07/21/2008, -6/+170I don't advocate upskirt photography, but a mandatory shutter sound? That's just ridiculous.
- inactive, on 07/21/2008, -13/+148You're in a public place. You're wearing a skirt. You're in Japan.
This should be expected. - DaJackel, on 07/21/2008, -3/+89Seriously how did this make it to the front page?
EVERY Cell in Japan has a mandatory shutter sound. Every damn one. It's a requirement in Japan. - yokozuka, on 07/21/2008, -1/+78Not that it matter a lot. I mean, the lack of physical camera button makes the maneuver almost impossible.
Someone told me, anyway. - Stevo23, on 07/21/2008, -3/+74"Fact that is true of almost all cell phones" + "iPhone" = Digg front page.
- inactive, on 07/21/2008, -2/+71uh that was my pacemaker...move along
- DrCyclops, on 07/21/2008, -15/+70Should I even ask what you think about rape?
- RedneckRandy, on 07/21/2008, -1/+47You can still get upskirts of deaf girls!
- Eezyville, on 07/21/2008, -24/+69Another solution would be to have these women wear longer skirts if they don't want upskirt shots.
- inactive, on 07/21/2008, -4/+49that's like saying one can't appreciate the beauty of ***** even when they're buried under a blouse
- wontstoptalking, on 07/21/2008, -3/+46Don't they tell you that when you board the plane there for the first time? Along with other important things, like watch out for Ninjas and don't eat anything that is still moving?
- cmakvaca, on 07/21/2008, -6/+45our phone networks may suck compared to Japan, but at least we can take our pervy pics in peace, amirite? high-five fellow Americans!
- sockpuppets, on 07/21/2008, -4/+38"Should I even ask what you think about rape?"
I think you mean surprise sex. - Stevo23, on 07/21/2008, -2/+36Pics or it didn't happen.
- deeboe, on 07/21/2008, -2/+35You had me at pervert.
- conversekid, on 07/21/2008, -9/+36Land of the pedos, home of the ramen
- inactive, on 07/21/2008, -9/+32I can't see the mystery of up-skirt photos. I mean, most women use cotton underpants, not crotchless french lingerie. Nutters.
- inactive, on 07/21/2008, -1/+24The point is that even Apple—the master of standardized, closed solutions—has to bow to the weirdness and conventions of the Japanese market.
- H3000, on 07/21/2008, -1/+20Darn, now I gotta go old school with the mirror on my shoe again.
- megamod, on 07/21/2008, -0/+18I would always get bored in my classes and every once in a while take a pic with my razor just to realize that there was no way to mute the shutter...it's stupid.
We're not all perverts you know...ok fine we are but we're not being perverted 24 hours a day? - Eezyville, on 07/21/2008, -2/+18mhm...
- Metropolis, on 07/21/2008, -1/+16Someone told me that too. They also told me that way too many women wear underwear.
- Pittance, on 07/21/2008, -0/+15Thongs for seamless skirt wearing?
- mongrel, on 07/21/2008, -1/+15Hey just because you dress like a slut doesn't mean you're a slut. And just because I act like a rapist doesn't mean I'm a rapist.
- ILoveBoobies, on 07/21/2008, -8/+21I advocate upskirt photography, but a mandatory shutter sound? That's just ridiculous.
- Owwmykneecap, on 07/21/2008, -1/+14are you joking me, you can do that on any phone.
- UltraMegaFilms, on 07/21/2008, -1/+14I think his logic is one the encompasses more than just up skirt photographers. I don't think one should have to wear a long skirt or pants to avoid that, but if you want to make sure your bits and pieces stay off the web, it's certainly one option. Here in Milwaukee, I feel as though I shouldn't have to avoid walking at night on the west side of town, but you bet your ass I do. The world is an unjust place.
- Darkaged, on 07/21/2008, -2/+13I do.
- atekay, on 07/21/2008, -3/+14Hasn't this been standard on most cell phones made in the past 5 years? Why is this such big news?
- neuromorph, on 07/21/2008, -3/+14ok here is how you take 'silent' photos with the iphone without the shutter. You dont need a hack, app, or anything other that whats lying around the house. A 3.5mm headphone plug and scissors.
The speakers on the iphone are deactivated when a headset is plugged in. You can either keep them in and take the picture. This will unfortunately still lead back to the offender. Indead of a sound a wire now will point back at you.
Instead, cut the plug from an old/cheap set of headphones and put them in the phone. now your perversions can run wild.
Im not condoning upskirt or anyother misuse of technology
Pay it forward!!! - punkcat, on 07/21/2008, -3/+12perv with a little bit of harry potter thrown in, nice touch,
- pyrates, on 07/21/2008, -2/+11What was the point of that article? There's no hardware involved in having to make that sound, so those with the wanting to will just remove it as the end of the article pointed out.
- screamingjoker, on 07/21/2008, -3/+12I just took an upskirt photo of your mother, do you advocate that?
- floridiot2, on 07/21/2008, -1/+10Good luck keeping the phone steady so you don't get a blurred ***** of an image.
- Rotzooi, on 07/21/2008, -1/+9Nah, this is bizzare. Tentacle rape on the other hand...
- Pittance, on 07/21/2008, -2/+10Or you could just get a better phone with a much higher res camera that is both smaller, and has a camera button to make this all easier. Those camera also probably have better a night mode and photo correction for getting shadowy areas. Anyone who bought an iPhone for this is pretty dumb.
- sat0shi, on 07/21/2008, -0/+8No. No it is not. My wife had a salaryman touch her ass once on a train when she was in high school... But she didn't even notice it. The only reason she knows is because someone told her. The reason being is that it was most likely an accident. The trains get pretty crowded and I accidentally brush against people's asses all the time, men and women alike. In fact, now men are in such a situation where we have to be scared when on a crowded train for fear of some bitch claiming we groped them when in actuality it was just an accident. Nowadays you'll see plenty of men stand with both hands up in the air or in their pockets to make sure there is no misunderstanding. As for upskirt pics, there will be some people taking them of course... as there are in any large, modern society. The thing is that the Japanese government is quick to make regulations like this when anything happens and thus we have mandatory shutter sounds.
Finally, everyone calls Japan a country full of perverts, but look at the number of rapes that occur here compared to America and then tell me which country has more perverts. We are no more sexually deviant here than you are in your bastion of freedom the United States of America. - elister, on 07/21/2008, -1/+8No, there is no point to the article. Theres a standard in place for camera phones, Apple complies to this standard, how is this news worthy? It isnt.
- sat0shi, on 07/21/2008, -1/+8ALL cell phones in Japan are required to have a shutter sound that cannot be disabled due to this. Although, my friend who bought a 3G iPhone recently said he thought it didn't have a shutter sound... at least one as loud as normal Japanese cell phones.
- mnemy, on 07/21/2008, -0/+7Yet the girls in japan still insist on wearing tiny mini skirts even on the coldest days. I loved my vacation in Tokyo ^_^
- demonbaby, on 07/21/2008, -5/+12One of the iPhone's best features is that you can hold it upright and pretend to be innocently checking your email while you're actually snapping photos of someone or something you're not supposed to. Without physical buttons or a flash or a camera sound, no one can tell. Let's just say it's, um, come in handy... a couple times.
- badjoke, on 07/21/2008, -0/+7You're not Japanese, either.
- bradleyland, on 07/22/2008, -0/+7To paraphrase Dave Chappelle: If you don't want me to talk to you like a whore, then maybe you shouldn't wear a whore's uniform?
- Niz1, on 07/21/2008, -0/+7did you not see "iPhone" in the title? its the second word.
- ColdForged, on 07/21/2008, -1/+7First it's mandatory clicking sounds, next it'll be a mandatory 125dB recording saying "I SNAP SHOT OF *****!" When will the madness end?
- poploserdigg, on 07/21/2008, -1/+7pics or you're just pretending to be a perv!
- Owwmykneecap, on 07/21/2008, -3/+9more iPhone spam cunningly disguised as a FUNNY story.
this kind of crap was published when camera phone became popular over here 5 or 6 years ago.
How all the pervs were using them and the government were going to make them have to have a noise by law.
and guess what it was ***** then and its ***** now.
Next WiFi is killing me. - MWeather, on 07/21/2008, -1/+7"Thats like saying if women don't want to be raped they should wear clothes that cover more basically."
Are you saying it doesn't help? - BadAsh71, on 07/21/2008, -1/+6Yeah, the iPhone is friggn' horrible at taking photos while in motion... takes some really surreal blurred shots though :)
