- Nathan86, on 04/13/2008, -2/+72And I thought i have made mistakes at work
- Spuy767, on 04/13/2008, -1/+40I get the feeling that this was less of a mistake and more of a graphic designer who thought this would be cute.
- zongamin, on 04/14/2008, -3/+1I'm sure you have evidence for this. For ***** sake someone used the wrong photo. That is all.
- brkhobowriter, on 04/13/2008, -4/+3"I'm not sure who nodded off in the art department at Engadget but scanning a circular makes a much cleaner image than taking a picture. ;-)"
- supermanred, on 04/14/2008, -4/+3Big deal, there's nothing illegal about modifying something you bought. Every iPod touch / iPhone owner has the right to jailbreak their new toys. And now it is so much easier (in OS X it's only 2 button presses to get it working)
- Reziarfg, on 04/14/2008, -0/+3While not illegal, it's still not what they're purchasing and not how it should be advertised.
- orangetiki, on 04/14/2008, -0/+1If you unlock an iPod touch, is it considered a mistake?
- Spuy767, on 04/13/2008, -1/+40I get the feeling that this was less of a mistake and more of a graphic designer who thought this would be cute.
- say592, on 04/13/2008, -3/+168It just goes to show that they arent all that good when they are left the way Apple Intended them.
Now, excuse me while I go buy one, so I can sue Radioshack for false advertising.- TypeEE, on 04/13/2008, -3/+1Agreed, $299 is the going price. One would assume anything on a flyer has some sort of promotion, in this case, it's jailbroke feature.
- awuwish, on 04/13/2008, -0/+5It does have a promotion: buy an ipod, get a $10 gift card.
- supermanred, on 04/14/2008, -1/+1They will be once the AppStore is on iTunes, offering apps for Free and for $$...
Until then, yeah the Jailbroken ones are pretty much the way to go. Though I bet the good games and such will only come out once they are available on iTunes for 5 bucks or whatever.- starkruzr, on 04/14/2008, -1/+2Even then, without jailbreak a lot of functionality will still be missing.
- Screengem0531, on 04/14/2008, -0/+3Why does everyone in America look for opportunities to sue people? Its ridiculous.
- itzmattu, on 04/14/2008, -0/+6I'm suing you for making a generalization about the entire American population!
- TypeEE, on 04/13/2008, -3/+1Agreed, $299 is the going price. One would assume anything on a flyer has some sort of promotion, in this case, it's jailbroke feature.
- rushco, on 04/13/2008, -22/+3Go to Best Buy and buy one and then sue them. Best Buy > Radioshack.
- TBobes, on 04/13/2008, -0/+14But it wasn't in Bets Buy's flyer.... You know, the thing your suing them for...
- killbert24, on 04/13/2008, -13/+8Good! Retail stores SHOULD be advocating the fact that Apple needs to be more open with their hardware/software. It will probably lead to more sales for Circuit City and Radioshack.
- Nathan86, on 04/13/2008, -1/+2It would definitely make me more apt to buy a zune from them if they would come out and say it.
- magicofpi, on 04/14/2008, -0/+0Not like anyone reading those ads would know what jailbreaking means...
- TomPlansMedia, on 04/13/2008, -1/+46"and we're equally sure that buyers will be pleased to learn they don't really get an IM application with their purchase."
this is the part that apple will love the most.- n0t0kayipr0mis3, on 04/14/2008, -2/+1I highly doubt that someone going through the ad will realize what the application is intended for if they even notice the picture so closely that is.
- TomPlansMedia, on 04/13/2008, -6/+38did this designer just use an image of his personal ipod or what? isn't it blatantly against apple's terms to use anything other than their authorized press images?
- atgmac, on 04/13/2008, -9/+39Yes, it's completely illegal to take photos of your own personal items.
- TomPlansMedia, on 04/13/2008, -3/+23for commercial use? once they've been hacked? guess again..
- supermanred, on 04/14/2008, -9/+2Modifying something you own (Hardware) is not illegal.
I mean, seriously how ***** is this world? - TomPlansMedia, on 04/14/2008, -2/+15you can do whatever you want to things you own, but if you're designing a brochure to sell a company's trademarked product you have to use images the company approves. this is common sense, why to people keep replying with stupid comments?
- starkruzr, on 04/14/2008, -4/+8You can't advertise a product as something it isn't (i.e., a touch jailbroken OOB). That's all.
- supermanred, on 04/14/2008, -9/+1Again, I repeat... that isn't a jailbroken iPod touch in the picture.
- ehsteve23, on 04/14/2008, -1/+1no, it's just an iPod touch on pre 1.1.3 firmware running iPhone apps and IM...of course Jailbreaking is something completely different
- supermanred, on 04/14/2008, -9/+2Modifying something you own (Hardware) is not illegal.
- TomPlansMedia, on 04/13/2008, -3/+23for commercial use? once they've been hacked? guess again..
- BossKey, on 04/14/2008, -0/+6It's like when there's an ad for a generic Windows PC of some kind, and the designer has livened up the screen by inserting a screen shot of Mac OS X. Seen those lots of times.
- atgmac, on 04/13/2008, -9/+39Yes, it's completely illegal to take photos of your own personal items.
- AdamTReineke, on 04/13/2008, -8/+61Dear Marketing:
You are paid to take photos of the iPhone, not make my favorite toy actually do something useful. If I cared, that would be my job.
Thanks,
Steve Jobs- supermanred, on 04/14/2008, -5/+3Dear Steve Jobs,
Thanks for the compliment. The iPhone in question is actually an iPod touch. It is also in fact, not jailbroken and is shown operating normally and with Apple approved software and firmware running. The instant message app in the picture is one of 10 or so that are available as web apps.
Oh, and Marketing... suck my balls because in June the Appstore button will be replacing the "Installer" anyways and all these apps on your jailbroken iPods will be available through iTunes free of charge.
- supermanred, on 04/14/2008, -5/+3Dear Steve Jobs,
- jamz0r, on 04/13/2008, -11/+0Has anyone considered that this could be the 1.1.4 firmware with the extra apps? you know, the ones you buy from itunes?
- glbanksitter, on 04/13/2008, -0/+1Ignore, I didn't read on.
- DaffyDuck, on 04/13/2008, -0/+5There are no official apps available yet and they won't be available on 1.1.4 firmware.
- 80hd, on 04/13/2008, -0/+3installer?
- ehsteve23, on 04/14/2008, -0/+1and the dock
- jamz0r, on 04/13/2008, -7/+1oh, ignore that :P commented before I read the article.. sorry
- bdsams, on 04/13/2008, -3/+11well atleast there finally advertising how it should be...if you buy one and dont jailbreak it your only getting 10% of the products capabilities
- DaffyDuck, on 04/13/2008, -0/+9Right now it's more like 75%. There aren't really any killer gotta-have-it apps available yet on installer. Some decent stuff but nothing amazing yet.
- DutchMaster, on 04/13/2008, -15/+2I saw the ad this morning and posted it http://digg.com/apple/Buy_a_jail_broken_ipod_touch ...
- Hootiehoo, on 04/13/2008, -0/+10WELCOME TO DIGG I'm sure they just read yours and did a re post
- supermanred, on 04/14/2008, -2/+1I guess you have no clue about what you are seeing either? It isn't jailbroken.
- ehsteve23, on 04/14/2008, -0/+2i guess you have no clue about jailbreaking an iPod touch, becuase if you did you'd know that that one clearly is.
- subliminalurge, on 04/14/2008, -0/+1Thanks for pointing that out. I went ahead and buried yours as a dupe.
You're welcome.
- TheWorm, on 04/13/2008, -10/+1I don't see installer. Those could be web apps..
- Carsonauto, on 04/13/2008, -0/+3see MobileChat?
- TheWorm, on 04/13/2008, -0/+1There's a web chat application for iPod and iPhone
- TheWorm, on 04/13/2008, -0/+3Nevermind, i guess installler got a new icon. Jailbroken ftw!
- BryanJK, on 04/14/2008, -0/+3also, webapps only work on 1.1.3+, which has the iPhone style dock Also, I
- Carsonauto, on 04/13/2008, -0/+3see MobileChat?
- Westford, on 04/13/2008, -6/+1Only three songs. That blows.
- FizzanoMatrix, on 04/13/2008, -7/+1They were advertising in Big5 stores last week for Iphones that run off modded Gimp tutorial files for both Tmobile and Rogers wireless I think.
- truk, on 04/13/2008, -2/+18What exactly does Circuit City have to do with this?
- ArkAngel06, on 04/13/2008, -0/+9They probably read the Engadget title like I did:
"Weekend circulars show jailbroken iPod touch with Installer on board"
For some reason 'circulars' jumps out as Circuit City to me...Or maybe thats because I read the description on digg first..... :/- truk, on 04/13/2008, -0/+2I guess that makes sense. I did notice a few people bad mouthing Circuit City in the comments on Engadget too. After skimming it all it kind of all mixes together
- Bebe272, on 04/16/2008, -0/+1I actually do some work with Circuit City, and they did not run the same image as Radio Shack featured in their circulars. The image in Circuit City's ads was approved by Apple.
- ArkAngel06, on 04/13/2008, -0/+9They probably read the Engadget title like I did:
- AHHHHH, on 04/13/2008, -6/+1AHHHHH
- unomeasjon, on 04/13/2008, -12/+2Don't you see how this works? They advertise it wrong so when little jake turns his ipod on it won't show half of this cool stuff.. Then apple jumps in on itunes and says "Hey! look you can get all these cool things extra!" (for only 15 dollars more) Yay! little jake now can have what was advertised. Im sure this was planned.. So don't jump to conclusions. And sueing apple from a customer standpoint never works out.. Apple still has way more money than you will ever have in the end.
- harrisonx, on 04/14/2008, -0/+2No.
New iPod touches come with the iPhone apps [Mail/Stocks/Weather/Maps] already installed. You don't need to pay for them.
What's of issue here is the Installer.app icon [the blue one that looks like a CD with an arrow underneath] and the IM application icon [the red one with the speech bubble with IM written inside] both of which are only available when the device has been Jailbroken.
Nothing to do with Apple selling more apps whatsoever.
- harrisonx, on 04/14/2008, -0/+2No.
- Xyphereos, on 04/13/2008, -7/+3I thought that Apple provided the pics?
- gooter, on 04/13/2008, -4/+3luckily the majority of people dont look at ads that closely
- ClemyNX, on 04/13/2008, -7/+1Incredible !
- UtahApocalyse, on 04/13/2008, -11/+8Only Apple fanboys can tell from that pic.
- thenome, on 04/13/2008, -3/+2They probably just googled ipod touch and took the first pic that came up for the ad cover page... but of course the first one was jail-broke :)
- kevbryant, on 04/14/2008, -1/+3if designers for such large companies are stupid enough to use googled images in their printed layouts, then maybe I need to change companies.
- all_about_the_D, on 04/13/2008, -1/+4i was about to say weren't those the extra apps that apple released after macworld? but i don't remember there being an im feature. just useless stuff like weather?
- magicofpi, on 04/14/2008, -0/+0There was a chat app in the new beta firmware, but that's obviously not it.
- shyboy2008, on 04/13/2008, -7/+3when will the price of ipod touches come down?
- kylere, on 04/13/2008, -8/+3Pirates for the win!
- sc2003, on 04/13/2008, -6/+1I bet Circuit City and Radioshack are gonna get sued by Apple very very soon.
- zongamin, on 04/14/2008, -0/+2I highly doubt it. Don't over react to this ***** - some idiot made a simple mistake, Apple will not give a *****.
- jh32488, on 04/13/2008, -9/+3its not jailbroken thats apples installer to put purchased software onto. it do any of you watch the keynotes? or have a jailbroken ipod touch or iphone? they are different icons. INACCURATE!
- Knikes, on 04/14/2008, -0/+4fail
- supermanred, on 04/14/2008, -4/+1No, he's right. It isn't jailbroken.
- ehsteve23, on 04/14/2008, -0/+1No, Knikes is right. fail.
- supermanred, on 04/14/2008, -4/+1No, he's right. It isn't jailbroken.
- Dafreakzo, on 04/15/2008, -0/+1You are actually right.
- Knikes, on 04/14/2008, -0/+4fail
- jh32488, on 04/13/2008, -9/+1i retract my last statement i noticed the chat program. but my jailbroken iphone has a different icon
- Knikes, on 04/14/2008, -0/+3fail
- jh32488, on 04/13/2008, -8/+1nevermind. my jailbroken iphone has a different icon. and i noticed the chat program
- Knikes, on 04/14/2008, -0/+3fail
- heystoopid, on 04/13/2008, -1/+1Good stuff, Maynard!
- diemunkiesdie, on 04/14/2008, -6/+5Umm.. does someone want to explain the jailbroken thing to me? I thought only iPhones needed to be unlocked for use on other networks. The iPod Touch does not use a cell network so why does it need to be unlocked?
- rwblackbird, on 04/14/2008, -0/+7Only so you can use 3rd party applications, really.
- nemodomi, on 04/14/2008, -12/+4"Umm.. does someone want to explain the jailbroken thing to me? I thought ..."
Umm ... NO! That's what Google's for ... so the same ***** doesn't need to be explained over and over and over again to people who are too lazy to search up information for themselves.
- Nato592, on 04/14/2008, -1/+3Someone probably just created a shortcut button to the homescreen for the IM thing.
- kyle415, on 04/14/2008, -7/+1has anyone seen the actual ad? i bet its photshopped.
- supermanred, on 04/14/2008, -13/+3UH, that is a STOCK IPOD TOUCH with a few web apps added. You can have up to 9 or 10 pages of apps on it.
So, basically this whole post was not researched very well. The installer app is nowhere visible.
THIS IS A STOCK IPOD TOUCH, as you would buy it from Apple.- elhof, on 04/14/2008, -0/+10Below the clock app...
- SwedishNinja, on 04/14/2008, -10/+8Who ***** CARES?
God damn I mean there's a war in Iraq, AIDS in Africa, and it doesn't look like Chinese Democracy isn't coming any time soon (I'm not talking about the country) but we're all sitting on the internet jerking off to a picture of an Apple product.- Gurigubankai, on 04/14/2008, -6/+1amen.
- lotsa1s, on 04/14/2008, -2/+0Are you ***** with me? Chinese Democracy has been all over the torrent sites for months.
I feel like ripping it just to annoy Axl Rose... God knows he hates it when people enjoy his music enough to share it with other people. - Cswltd13, on 04/14/2008, -2/+2if you really cared enough about any one of those issues to make a real attempt at tackling them, you wouldn't be trolling.
in conclusion, shut the ***** up.
- Justin6512, on 04/14/2008, -3/+1anyone think that maybe this may be a leaked photo of a future software upgrade?
- derekivey, on 04/14/2008, -0/+1Link to Ad: http://radioshack.shoplocal.com/radioshack/Default ...
- silentb0b, on 04/14/2008, -3/+1its pointless to have iphone without jailbrakin.
- zongamin, on 04/14/2008, -0/+3This is an ipod touch.
- Velnich, on 04/14/2008, -1/+1Gotta love that "ooooh someone's gonna get it, huh huh huh" attitude. Embarrassing slip ups are funny, make it costly or throw in a few lost jobs and it's ***** hilarious.
- zongamin, on 04/14/2008, -2/+2So the story here is that someone made a minor error by using the wrong photo on an advert. That's it.
- zjbird, on 04/14/2008, -3/+1..shopped..?
- webtroll, on 04/14/2008, -0/+2I love how in the bigger picture the ad reads "iPod Authorized Reseller" next to the product shot ;-)
- updigg, on 04/14/2008, -0/+0The funny part about this is the Radio Shack I work at hasn't had the iPod Touch in stock for about 3 months nor has any store in our district. Also if you ever see a yellow tag that reads "Managers Special" it is the same in all stores and just means they are trying to get rid of a discontinued item. I could submit a self written article about Radio Shack similar to that of the Best Buy and Comcast secrets already on Digg.
- habenneas, on 04/15/2008, -1/+1LynxCache mirror: http://www.lynxcache.org/usr/1/Weekend_circulars_s ...
- cmw10, on 04/19/2008, -0/+0HAHA, thats great!
