- mozzep, on 02/29/2008, -1/+8don't add music to videos. not everyone likes the same things, especially that crap.
- OneManArmy, on 02/29/2008, -1/+7son, you just failed the internets.
- jiqiren, on 02/29/2008, -0/+4Buried for annoying background music.
- hrhs556x, on 02/29/2008, -1/+5wow, what a bunch of ***** comments.
- ryanmm, on 02/29/2008, -2/+5Yeah, YOU really showed them. Great contribution!
- prodigy60, on 02/29/2008, -5/+8boobs. that is all. also, more boobs.
- tjcarter, on 02/29/2008, -0/+3Correct. This is a totally hacked firmware. It can have a custom kernel (not signed by Apple, more complete Bluetooth support anyone?), a baseband that is already unlocked, no activation necessary ever, and other fun stuff. Essentially, the entire process of controlling what software you put on the phone has been co-opted now. This also means no more daisy chaining kernels for the Linux on iPhone effort (and no, that isn't the only problem those guys need a solution for..)
Plus there's no reason this cannot be used on a 16GB iPhone just as easily as an old 4GB model. It should work everywhere. (According to one of the developers, they haven't tried it on the 16GB model yet, but "but nothing conceivable would stop it from working on one".
They'll be testing until SDK day and ON SDK day to be sure that things still work, then they'll release a tested thing you can trust. - KingChronic, on 03/04/2008, -0/+1I would normally agree with you, but Dream Theater is pretty awesome
- ryanmm, on 02/29/2008, -3/+4Apple can't "give up" they signed a contract with AT&T, there is nothing else to it. Unfortunately if you want this one specific phone you either have to rely on the dev team, or just not get it. I'm going to get dugg down to all hell for saying that, but it's true.
People can act like such children sometimes, crying that they want an iPhone, but other phones have better/faster/cheaper plans, can go international, have exchange support etc. In many cases these people that lambaste Apple for locking it's phone are only doing so because the device they want so bad might not be the best solution for them. An SDK is coming, a 3G phone is coming, exchange support is coming, if people had a little patience, they would be able to get what they want. It doesn't matter why those things weren't included in the first place, Apple put out the phone they wanted to put out and no one is making you buy it. People on these comments sometimes make it seem like owning an iPhone is almost required, and its criminal that it doesn't have the features they need.
I will get labeled an "Apple fanboy" by those who disagree with me, but I assure you I am not. What I do know is that Apple made a nice device that unfortunately had limitations and wasn't for everyone. - ridd1e, on 02/29/2008, -3/+4If you don't know what's that: Original iTunes, modified firmware. Phone is jailbroken, hacktivated & unlocked. Baseband can be old or new. Release: unknown, but probably after SDK.
- inactive, on 02/29/2008, -0/+1What is up with all of the spam comments on digg lately? Did youtube find us?
- godofpumpkins, on 02/29/2008, -1/+2um, octoprep was completely different :P you needed to run a tool after restore that took advantage of the backdoor oktoprep had left open. This needs no additional tools after restore.
- IvanB, on 02/29/2008, -1/+2I heard it was 1.1.1FW.
- macropneuma, on 03/01/2008, -0/+1Apple :P , hurry up and release the SDK, so that this this iTunes unlock is released, and we can get it!
- tjcarter, on 02/29/2008, -0/+0It was, and I believe it was also a 3.9 bootloader this time. However the point of the exercise is to demonstrate running unsigned code. This setup can basically be used on pretty much any device out there right now. I would suggest getting facts from dev team, not looking for them in digg comments. Someone seems to be organizing an effort to mod down comments from people who actually know something about it and mod up the people who post what they don't know about.
Welcome to the Internet, I suppose. - KingChronic, on 03/04/2008, -0/+0Don't forget the patched iPhone bootloader :)
- tjcarter, on 03/01/2008, -0/+0Er, I don't know about WM6 but we did that all the time for WM5. In fact, many people released WM6 upgrades for WM5 devices. It's cool to see the iPhone catching up to what xda-developers people have been doing for ages now.
Fair warning though, you can't distribute a custom firmware. You can make one, but you can't legally distribute. If and when this is released, it will have to be as something you apply to your downloaded 1.1.4 firmware image. That means applications like iNdependence will still be needed because they'll be the things that take a stock image and customize it for you. Of course, with the instructions, you will be able to tweak it yourself. Replace the stock calculator with MACalc. Replace Notepad with something that doesn't use Marker Felt. That sort of thing. - KingChronic, on 03/04/2008, -0/+0Pssst...You don't have to say 'Correct' to one of the guys that crafted this exploit :P
- kkiran, on 03/01/2008, -1/+1I don't understand why we cannot flash and modify custom images on the iPhone like dat in Windows Mobile 6.... It will be ultra cool, thats wat these guys did may be, I see where the iPhone is heading, stay tuned guys, here comes the ultimate gadget ROARING!! Prices of iPhone are scheduled to come down, refurb units available lot cheaper, save for it!
- tjcarter, on 02/29/2008, -1/+0pumpkin says it can be used on either one.
- bradkovach, on 03/01/2008, -2/+1I laughed. It's okay Mr. CJ Flashman, if that IS your real name. I really like the "SIN(90)" part.
- laaabaseball, on 03/01/2008, -2/+1Jesus.... was this posted or 4chan or something?
- bjarkebech, on 02/29/2008, -3/+2That made no sense... He just restored and kept unlock and jailbreak. Reminds me of oktoprep
- W9cae, on 02/29/2008, -4/+2Very cool hopefully folks will get to try this firmware soon.
- OneManArmy, on 02/29/2008, -4/+2I would like to know if this is a OTB 112/113 or an older one with 3.9 bootloader. anyone?
- tjcarter, on 02/29/2008, -6/+4Apple, you just need to give up and allow people to buy the thing unlocked. I'm sorry, but you just can't win this one. Too many of us travel outside the country where our iPhone would become a brick. Too many of us have better plans with other providers in countries where the iPhone is sold. If you want to win this, your only recourse is to provide us with a viable option LESS ANNOYING than having to wait for the dev team to bring us a full solution.
- cjflashman, on 02/29/2008, -3/+1L0L WE CANZ TYPE IN ALL CAPZ 4ND BE T0TALLY ARETARDED!!!!!!1110NE0NESIN(90)
- tjcarter, on 02/29/2008, -5/+3My guess is SDK day. And this time, zibri doesn't have it, so he can't release a broken version of it before SDK day to tell Apple what exploit they need to patch to break it. (He's on record intending to do precisely that with the jerry exploit..)
- tjcarter, on 02/29/2008, -3/+0Apple and AT&T are both companies. You start talking about enough money, they will do whatever you want. One option for AT&T is to insist that people sign for a contract and then pay the early termination fee before they'll unlock. Or that they unlock only after six months of service. (That's done a lot.)
There's a solution here that makes sure AT&T gets paid, if Apple wants to explore it. Contract terms can always be renegotiated if the current contract is undesirable to both parties. AT&T is presently missing out on making a buck from every iPhone that never sees their network. - Z00L, on 02/29/2008, -5/+2z0mg!!! HAX!!
