- hdberk, on 10/04/2008, -2/+110Everyone is saying that this is going to be taken down... It will not be removed and Apple specifically said it won't be. Apple said that VOiP applications are allowed if they are disabled on Edge and 3G. They must be Wi-Fi only.
- ddfall, on 10/03/2008, -5/+63Ha, already installed... unless they shut it off with their magic off button.
- hdberk, on 10/04/2008, -0/+46Although Truphone was VoIP, it did not have skype. You had to use their service.
- xtraa, on 10/03/2008, -0/+28Direct AppStore Link: http://tinyurl.com/getfring
btw: I don't think that Apple will kick it. Afaik VoIP over 3G/Edge is not supported this time. Also, use BossPrefs to disable the killswitch. - m1zl3d, on 10/03/2008, -16/+44I've HAD VoIP on my iPhone for a while using Truphone. It's been in the AppStore since it's release and works quite well.
How is this news now? - lorductape, on 10/04/2008, -5/+30What about I Am Rich? There are numerous examples of apple accepting an app and then kicking it later.
- mrbad101, on 10/04/2008, -1/+23Jailbreak + BossPrefs = turns off the "magic button" Apple has ;)
- lorductape, on 10/03/2008, -31/+53How long do you think it will be before apple shuts this down.
- pulpjedi, on 10/03/2008, -9/+30Get it while you can! I only wish I had the good sense to get NetShare when it was up...
- andy2na, on 10/04/2008, -2/+21I tried out Fring with Skype and Gizmo SIP; there is a noticable 5 second lag between people talking, also there is echoing. I am right near my wireless router, and skype on the computer works fine. Also note that Truphone does not have lag (or as bad as 5seconds) when I tried it out on this same setup.
To get skypeout calls to work, you have to enter 001 before the 9/10 digit number (001-800-342-3543), otherwise itll bring you to terminated call right away. Thats a minor annoyance but easily fixable on their end - by making it automatically dial 001 for you for any calls made on Skype (in the US)
Also, after adding Skype addon in fring (which takes awhile to log in), it dials out fine. After exiting the program, and go back in, skype calls DO NOT work anymore. You have to remove the skype addon, and add it again.
Another big bug is the "no .'s after the @," luckily I had an account with the old fring.
I would love for skype to work with minimal lag - Ive tried out truphone and that works semi-well - but expensive per/min
I was ecstatic when I heard fring was on the appstore. I have tried the old 1.1.4 jailbroken version and it was unusable as VOIP goes - long voice delays, never calling right, etc.
I hoped this version would AT LEAST fix the voice lag, thats the whole point of VOIP, but it is EXACTLY the same as it was in the old version (except adding skype and menus). I know this app is free, but the point I want to make is that I would have easily paid $10 if it worked correctly and lagfree.
Now that the NDA is up, I would suggest Fring to collaborate with Truphone and iCall (if possible) to see how they did it or are doing it. Truphone works well, but is expensive since it uses their own service. And iCall, well, is not even out yet and no one knows their pricing.
But I am going to keep optimistic for Fring! - MustaBeen20X, on 10/03/2008, -3/+20Apple had to agree with the developper before putting this up on the store... they certainly wont shut the app down if they agreed with it... Apple said VOIP calls over wi-fi was ok when they released it, so it will stay on the store forever unless the developpers decide to remove it.
- GeckoSlayer, on 10/04/2008, -2/+19Jailbreak and get pdaNET. SO simple to use. Just setup an ad-hoc network and launch the iphone application, no proxy settings or anything. It's a true modem!
- thegrizz51, on 10/04/2008, -0/+15The new iPod Touch supports the new headset/mic combo that should be out this month. So, if you have the new one, Fring away!
- eleazar123, on 10/04/2008, -1/+15I don't know about everyone else, but I'm thoroughly disappointed this wasn't released on the jailbreak side with the ability to make calls over 3G/Edge. :(
- reechme, on 10/04/2008, -0/+13That answers it for me ;)
- zenatek, on 10/04/2008, -0/+12you can sign up for VOIPStunt.com... totally free, and I just made a call without handing out any billing information on my iPod. Pretty wicked if you ask me.
- Wailord, on 10/04/2008, -3/+15NetShare?
- chochazel, on 10/04/2008, -0/+11Never, there have been VOIP apps for ages, albeit not Skype. Apple specifically said that VOIP would be allowed when the sdk was announced.
- TheFinaleofSeem, on 10/04/2008, -1/+11Apple said that VoIP was fine over wifi. That's why you're being buried.
- ElectricRebel, on 10/04/2008, -0/+8Its time to end the concept of a cell phone. Paying per minute for voice is a ***** joke. In the end, bits for voice and bits for data should both be the same thing. It only works because people still accept the idea of having "a phone company" since they have been around for ever. You should only pay for bandwidth and the rates for bandwidth shouldn't be outrageous (like the rates for an SMS message). Its time for phones to become mobile internet devices. If you want to talk to someone, just run VoIP in the application layer.
Hopefully the next generation of network standards such as WiMAX will finally end the artificial scarcity being created in the cell phone market. - herebejames, on 10/03/2008, -1/+9I'm still interested to see Skype's introduction but Fring always trumps for giving me access to messaging clients etc in a single interface.
- cardyology, on 10/04/2008, -2/+10http://appulo.us/
- TheFinaleofSeem, on 10/04/2008, -2/+9Um, what? VoIP has been on the iPhone for a while, you twinkie.
- egzeqtA, on 10/04/2008, -1/+8Huge step forward!
- Genecalypse, on 10/04/2008, -2/+8been here for a while?
- doctorjimmy, on 10/04/2008, -0/+6Um, before you get your panties in a bunch, think for a second. Some of us don't get very good cellular signals in our houses - especially older ones with metal lath behind plaster walls. Jerkoff.
- Vulphaestion, on 10/04/2008, -1/+7http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/ ...
Direct link to it. - tcr008, on 10/04/2008, -0/+5Umm, because if I make an international call with Skype I get charged nothing (I paid for unlimited SkypeOut) but if I make an international call using, y'know, the "phone" part of the i"Phone" I get gouged for it.
- corsairstw, on 10/04/2008, -0/+5iPod touch, anyone?
- l800LEMMINGS, on 10/04/2008, -0/+5im happy about fring but i'm really exited about iCALL which should be coming out soon
- deadnoob, on 10/04/2008, -0/+5They have no reason to take this down. It goes over wifi, unlike netshare which used ATT's network.
Of course that doesn't mean they wont. - godofgodlygods, on 10/04/2008, -0/+5When they introduced the App Store, Apple specifically said that they would allow any kind of VOIP as long as it wasn't using the cell networks. Internet anything is fine.
- SeaICIubber, on 10/04/2008, -1/+6Phonesabre was pulled by the developer after consultation with EA/Lucas Arts. Apple had nothing to do with it.
- tcr008, on 10/04/2008, -0/+4Tried this iPhone to iPhone, 1st gen to 3G, 3G could hear first gen but not other way around, any one else have the same problem?
- InsaneSplash, on 10/04/2008, -0/+4If only this software [Fring] connected directly with your own SIP server and not via their Fring Servers. The same goes with Skype etc... All traffic is routed via their systems and not directly with the supported IM's.... thus creating problems. It also doesn't support a proxy server... :(
- metapop, on 10/04/2008, -0/+4as if there's not enough junk about palin on here already.
- eleazar123, on 10/04/2008, -0/+4Not on firmware 2.x.
- slippytoad, on 10/04/2008, -1/+5Well you made two points, so clearly not pointless.
- corsairstw, on 10/04/2008, -0/+4They already did. It made it into the App Store. Steve Jobs has said that VoIP calls are allowed on the iPhone if they are only made over WiFi.
- inactive, on 10/04/2008, -1/+5It's apps like this that make me wish the iPod Touch had a microphone.
- herebejames, on 10/04/2008, -0/+4here here, it is also primarily a VOiP app to most so I'm sure it will have crossed their minds during the submission process.
- inactive, on 10/04/2008, -0/+4U can use your iphone everywhere where you have the cell phone coverage.
The software VoIP app through WiFi is a bonus that may come in handy for example overseas. - tcr008, on 10/04/2008, -0/+4This is completely besides the point, you can just "call them", but when you're dialling international it gets expensive. When you have friends that live in a country that isn't your own this is a very, very good thing to have for your back pocket.
I had a £250 phone bill when my girlfriend was overseas, so seriously, this is a GOOD thing. - Uzael, on 10/04/2008, -0/+4Fring seems pretty good - but it puts all of your contacts in one list. They should at least separate different services with different online icons. I can't tell who is an msn contact or gtalk or whatever. They all have the same icons.
- beerbarron, on 10/04/2008, -0/+4Fring is looking reaaallllyyyy good. But theres a few things I'd like to see, 1) icons against names dipicting the add on e.g msn, skype ect. 2) sound controls for when making a call 3) confrence calling 4) to have someone develop a cam to go INFRONT of the iPhone, so we can do video chat :)
- chourobin, on 10/04/2008, -0/+4make sure you dial in the proper format. start with + or 001 for US calls. ex. 001-626-xxx-xxxx. Dont include the "-".
- svensksvamp, on 10/04/2008, -0/+4Fringing thing rocks!
- pixeldust, on 10/04/2008, -0/+4When I used skype it was like $60 a year for unlimited calling in the US/Canada and an local number/voicemail for people to call me on. That's how much my cell phone bill is every month.
- ekrub, on 10/04/2008, -0/+4When traveling in Italy, TruPhone not only helped while waiting for a prepaid SIM to get activated, but also provided a much cheaper option for reaching my wife in the U.S.
- falser, on 10/04/2008, -5/+9You forgot that although Apple has cute designs for their products they do, in fact, not have a soul.
