- wackymacs, on 10/10/2007, -4/+36This is sad, but at the same time we know it was inevitable. Now iWork just needs a paint/draw app - Definitely something to look forward to.
- stalefries, on 10/10/2007, -2/+33You know, despite having all sorts of cool features like layers and masks and stuff, I still wish for an app that has the same simplicity as Paint.
- cyclox, on 10/10/2007, -4/+28i think it is a spot on the board game Monopoly.
- FyreFiend, on 10/10/2007, -2/+23Both great but neither really feel like a Mac app.
- h3xley, on 10/10/2007, -3/+23>You know, despite having all sorts of cool features like layers and masks and stuff, I still wish for an app that has the same simplicity as Paint.
Pixen is great - it's cocoa, and it's free. http://opensword.org/Pixen/ - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -3/+20It's like Microsoft Works but by Apple.
- virtualball, on 10/10/2007, -6/+21It's not really sad. Last I used it was on OS 9. It's the same amount of sadness as finding out the kid you sat next to you in third grade died, they'll be missed, but you can move on. Mostly because you're in fourth grade now. :)
- Urusai, on 10/10/2007, -0/+15At least they still have HyperCard! ...oh wait
- aDJsavedmylife, on 10/10/2007, -1/+15I think it used to be called ClarisWorks in the early 90s, I had it on my Performa 630...
- wxrocks, on 10/10/2007, -2/+15I enjoyed working with ClarisWorks and AppleWorks because the user interface was so much easier to teach people. And now with ribbons p**sing me off....
- lkv87, on 10/10/2007, -2/+14If they did make a paint/draw app I'd think they'd make it part of iLife rather than iWork and I'd hope it looked something like Pixelmator
http://www.pixelmator.com/ - martinc00, on 10/10/2007, -1/+11*****
- iamlutheran, on 10/10/2007, -0/+10I liked AppleWorks a lot, but I like Pages '08 so much better. :)
- regeya, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AppleWorks
-1 for being lazy - Ireland, on 10/10/2007, -1/+10So does every kid with a Mac.
- MacParrot, on 10/10/2007, -1/+10It's NOT pinning...that is a dead program. It has ceased to be. It's adrift and joined the choir eternal. It has gone to meet its maker. THAT is an ex-program!
So said MacParrot. How's that for irony? - Charlotte_Web, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8I was surprised AppleWorks made it this long. The niche that AppleWorks (ClarisWorks) filled has long since passed -- an office suite with a low memory footprint that was several programs in one -- it was great, back in the day, when memory was hideously expensive. It was a revolutionary program for its time, though, just the same as Hypercard was (another great Apple program that was left to wither on the vine).
Anyway, MS Word long ago added the tight integration of word processing, graphics, and spreadsheets.
Here's a great first-hand account of the history of ClarisWorks:
http://www-swiss.ai.mit.edu/~bob/clarisworks.php - DigDugDigger, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8A good product for its time I think, until Office & iWork were on OSX.
- inactive, on 10/30/2007, -0/+8It's not dead, it's just pining for the fjords.
- Jericon, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7Goodbye, Clarus the dogcow!
- stormist, on 10/10/2007, -23/+30What the hell is appleworks
- GnuTzu, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7Then, Open Source it.
- super_spyder, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7say what you want about apple works, but it was cheap, and had a decent database program for basic users (like filemaker pro but less powerful), and worked on both mac, and believe it or not windows too
- jhanson, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Pixen hasn't been developed in two years, suffers from numerous random crash bugs, and has palette issues when editing sprites with multiple frames. I love the idea of this program, and its simple interface, but the execution is poor and isn't getting any better. Skip it.
- Crispuk, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Quit yo jibber jabber.
- kodek, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6A paint app is a reference to mspaint, which is a bitmap editor (aka, pixels, not vectors). Therefore, a paint app IS a pixel editor.
- CrazedGeek, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Seashore ( http://seashore.sourceforge.net ) is supposed to be as easy to use as Paint, but with the good features of the GIMP.
- nufoto, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5And how long will it take before iWork has the same functionality as Appleworks does??
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4I know some people who stuck and still stick to it for that very reason.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5Now if only they'd; include a simple paint/illustration app in the iWork suit, make iWork good enough to fully replace Office, and bundle iWork with all Macs instead of just the demo. They used to bundle AppleWorks and somehow managed to stay in business, I'm sure they can do it again.
- sneeka2, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4I'll recommend ArtRage here. Even has a free edition.
http://www.artrage.com/ - Ireland, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4Seems interesting, thanks! :)
- drdom, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3OS9 is dead too. But I make some pretty good $$$ supporting clients who still won't give it up, or have custom apps or 4D or Helix stuff they won't or can't convert or give up.
Long live Appleworks. - frogpelt, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Or even Claris
- willclarke, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3moof
- 5plic3r, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3A Brief History of ClarisWorks (a.k.a. AppleWorks):
http://www-swiss.ai.mit.edu/~bob/clarisworks.php - trogdoor, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2How do you make a comment consisting of an empty string? ( that is if it wasn't just a bug )
- 5plic3r, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2I think you're remembering a program called MultiScribe (later renamed to BeagleWrite).
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3The only real Mac replacement for MS Paint that I've seen so far is PaintBrush - http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/25050/paintbrush
Everything else I've seen is either geared toward a higher-end market or uses a fullscreen child-only interface. - digitalmob, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Well, the biggest issue facing GIMP on a Mac is that it is based on GTK, which is only available through X11. This is way too clunky and doesn't feel right.
Seashore is a decent attempt at an open source editor for the Mac, but it is severely lacking quite a bit of functionality that experienced users rely on. - SlpingInsomniac, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2*Than*
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2I think I have a pirated version of that on floppy somewhere.
- SennS, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Long life to iWork :)
- JeffreyLloyd, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Seashore is one of my favorites! Much better then paintbrush.
- romeosc, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Just because they no longer support it, doesn't mean it won't continue performing!
I have MS Office/word /Excel and I still use Appleworks since it works better than iWork! - najdorf, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Appleworks was bundled free, iWork is not :(
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2What the hell went wrong, Pixen was so promising
- dragon76, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Pixelmator is turning into the single most popular piece of vapourware on digg. New rule: one product is not better than another product until it's actually a product!
- chrysalis, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Appleworks was already unmaintained for years.
But a lot of people is still using it. Why? Because it was shipped with new Macs. It was nice to have a complete office suite for free.
iWork tools work in a very different way. They are supposed to load files made with Appleworks, unfortunately this is not the case. Graphics made with the Applework clipart aren't properly imported. And OpenOffice.org is completely unable to load the Applework files. - Diggernaut, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I'm still mourning MacWrite
