- deadbaby, on 10/11/2007, -14/+167Supporting the AT&T empire? What are your other choices? Verizon? Sprint? Not exactly Mom & Pop operations either.
- fuzzmeister, on 10/11/2007, -4/+82From my experience, Verizon is the most evil of the bunch, at least on the cell phone side. Anything that they could make money off of, they force you to use it, and disable any alternatives (such as Bluetooth file transfer).
- jkellmd, on 10/11/2007, -28/+75BOYCOTT!!!
- MrsButtersworth, on 10/11/2007, -8/+40If youre willing to fork over $500 for a ***** phone, why in the world would you have a problem with AT&T?
- ggarenn, on 10/11/2007, -19/+46this comment system sucks
- minderbe, on 10/11/2007, -9/+34out of Verizon, Sprint, and AT&T... I've had the best luck with AT&T... I don't know what this article is crying about :P
- 7of7, on 10/11/2007, -75/+100If you're willing to support the evil Apple empire I see no reason why you'd have problems with AT&T.
- trekkie, on 10/11/2007, -19/+42It's all well and good to take a stand, but is any of the crop of telecom providers in the US not vying to become the next AT&T as well?
- Wang, on 10/11/2007, -2/+22At the price (including plans etc), the iphone isn't worth it full stop. It's a lovely bit of kit, but the $$ need to come down.
- Roksix, on 10/11/2007, -19/+39No.
- kingygk, on 10/11/2007, -3/+22I was thinking of getting the iphone. Since you have to get the data plan and the 2 year contract it is not as tempting a deal any more.
- AngelBunny, on 10/11/2007, -4/+20I will get an iPhone when it gets hacked so I can write my own software for it, and I can use other service providers on it, and there is no 'wifi' plan or whatever they recommend.
- TeatimeGrommit, on 10/11/2007, -3/+18Yawn. AT&T was caught helping the government spy. Does anyone actually think that other telecoms are saintly netizens, selflessly guarding our privacy? My choice isn't an angelic Nokia on snow-pure Verizon vs. running a black arts Apple iPhone for the satanic AT&T. My choice is more along the lines of which demon of hell provides the combination I like best.
- Ninjab3ar, on 10/11/2007, -10/+25I, for one, welcome our AT&T overlords....
- totorototoro, on 10/11/2007, -2/+17Wait, there is a telecom who ISN"T evil? Riiiiiight.
- waterdrop, on 10/11/2007, -9/+23I would totally get the iPhone if it didn't have any phone features at all. I just want it for the Internet, Media, etc. Just take away the phone features. And I would buy it tomorrow. And I don't even like Apple.
- Dumbledorito, on 10/11/2007, -5/+17I'd settle for being able to by whatever phone I wanted and using it on whatever network I wanted.
How many decades did it take to get the original AT&T monolith to let customers use phones that weren't the property of AT&T? - BLAM8, on 10/11/2007, -1/+12Very true, but it's worth being informed before buying.
- johnpaul191, on 10/11/2007, -6/+17from wikipedia: a firm that has no competitors in its industry.
Apple is a monopoly now? i'm sure Microsoft would love to hear about this. i'm pretty sure Apple has competition with everything it makes. - chourobin, on 10/11/2007, -4/+15Really, what phone may I ask is it that you have?
- yujie, on 10/11/2007, -3/+13Less evil than verizon
- Firehed, on 10/11/2007, -0/+9I agree. After having spent the last two and a half years with Verizon due to a complete lack of alternatives (only carrier with signal in the area; I recently moved so that's no longer an issue), I can't possibly imagine how any company could possibly be worse than they are. Not even a week ago, I was in one of their stores trying to replace my mom's cell phone, and they managed to hand us a phone that had been activated with some complete stranger's number. It wasn't until after I was well away from the store that we found out by getting one of this stranger's calls, and it took an inordinate amount of time for them to rectify their mistake. I never found out whether the person's number we managed to hijack was ever returned to her; I can only assume not.
- theonlyvlad, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7They did choose AT&T as its partner though - does that mean they support AT&Ts policies?
- HA5TY, on 10/11/2007, -5/+12BRING BACK CINGULAR
- thekronz, on 10/11/2007, -7/+14Answer: Kind of, maybe, I'd like to but don't want to go to Cingular...
- fanboydcs, on 10/11/2007, -2/+8right buddy, what do you call this magic phone?
- xrisnothing, on 10/11/2007, -7/+13Actually, by partnering with AT&T you could say that Apple has no problems with illegal wire taps.
- OrangeTide, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6Welcome to the 21st century, you realize AT&T reformed into a massive corporation from all those broken up pieces right? It's as if the break up never happened.
- lightningrod220, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6a ***** phone? a phone that allows me to ***** and make calls at the same time? incredible!
where do i sign up? - PuffyC, on 10/11/2007, -17/+22My thoughts exactly. If you're willing to support Apple, the single most monopolist PC manufacturer, you should have no issues sending your money to AT&T.
- DietMountainDew, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5Well, Yes and no. In a lot of cities there are lesser known cell phone providers. Here in Cincinnati, it is called Cincinnati Bell. They build their own towers in and around the city and deliver quality service for cheap.
If you're not near the city, then your service is contracted out through one of the larger, AT&T, Sprint, Whomever is contracted for that area you're at. So, actually yeah - there ARE other choices, for some. - lightningrod220, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4yeah, if I was hitting a bong as much as you are, I'd have a $50 miracle phone, too
- tadunne, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4It's the same in the UK all the mobile operators have bad customer service and will try to screw you.. in fact erm most corporate companies are like this! Weird!
- accn112, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Even Darth Vader would be scared of a two year contract with AT&T
- Dumbledorito, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5I wonder, given their stance on Net Neutrality, will AT&T accept money from one company to drop the calls to their competitors?
I mean, why not? It's "their network." - MechaFenris, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4AT&T's recent stands on futzing with your content (traffic shaping and "blocking dirty pirate material") makes me pause... Of course, having said that, Sprint, Verizon and the like aren't any better... just not as powerful in terms of impending monopoly (again).
- jman8888, on 10/11/2007, -2/+6Greasemonkey Script FTW. Kevin Just make digg look like this,.
- MechaFenris, on 10/11/2007, -2/+6The same reason you would have for forking over $40 for a ***** phone and having the telecomm giant sell your habits to the highest bidder and through sheer audacity, allow the government listen to your every conversation without any Constitutional protection.
There is no price worth giving up essential liberties. Not even an iPhone. - phytonix, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3I don't think verizon is less evil
- phlogiston99, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3No. But it would not be worth supporting the evil empire wannabe like Sprint, Verizon, t-mobile et al.
- argyle747, on 10/11/2007, -8/+11New gadget is better than wah wah wah wah AT&T is evil. Wah wah wah.
- neckfire, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3The consistent overcharges by Verizon is pretty skeazy. That's the reason I left Verizon a long time ago.
- omarqaz7, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3In my opinion, Verizon is much worse than AT&T. Lately I've noticed that they will drop essential features like voicemail off my plan for no reason, while still charging me for them. When I asked why this was happening, Verizon informed that Voicemail had "fallen off" my account. I'm no expert but I don't understand how features can "fall off" a plan.
- streak, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3That's a horrible mistake, when it should read "Your World Delivered". How will AT&T ever dominate when they make mistakes like that?
- fanboydcs, on 10/11/2007, -2/+5T-mobile, the company that charges an arm and a leg for wireless in starbucks and other "hotspots"?
If it wasn't for them we would see free wireless EVERYWHERE! - ttkgeek, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3The "new" AT&T is Cingular basically.
- fr34k5h0w, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3I think there's a SEEM edit for the Razr that unblocks the OBEX on Verizon phones. Or you can switch them over to a different Firmware (Alltel, US Cell, etc) and it unlocks it. Personally I can't stand the Verizon skins etc because they are too bland and too red for my taste. /whining

- CLShortFuse, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2That's a complete lie. I have a Razr V3xx from Cingular. Bluetooth OBEX is not disabled, you just don't know how to use it. I have my 2GB MicroSD 90% filled with MP3s. When I was a party 2 weeks ago, I sent some MP3s and pictures to my friend's phones over bluetooth. The only phones I couldn't send to were Verizon phones since Verizon blocks it. Nothing is disabled, not even use it as a bluetooth modem. I can pair the phone to my laptop over bluetooth and connect to the internet on HSDPA speed (~1.5mbps), though I usually just plug in the Mini-USB cable and tether my data like that. Not only that, but A2DP and AVRCP are enabled as well. I just recently bought a Car Stereo that doubles as a bluetooth "headset" and "headphones." I stream the music off my V3xx onto my car stereo. But my gf has Verizon Wireless and is switching. I can never send her mp3s to her phones (A670, LG Chocolate, or K1m) through USB or bluetooth and we always have to find a ways to get it done with bitpim. V3xx is actually an amazingly good phone. It has a freaking Nvidia GeForce chip which makes the menu system the fastest i've ever seen on a phone. It's a shame you don't know how to use it properly and think it's AT&T's fault.
And what's up with the new comment system not letting put line feeds in comments!!! -
