Is Steve Jobs' "TOP SECRET" statement related to UI Change in Leopard?

arstechnica.com — By far, the most popular theory about Apple's top secret features is that Leopard will include an all-new look and feel. John Gruber predicts: "It's time to zig now that Microsoft is zagging with Vista. They're going to try to make Vista look as out-of-fashion and goofy and childish as possible."

Apple won't be attacking Vista (I don't believe this writer speaks for Apple) they'll be trying to stay ahead of Vista (shouldn't be hard as Microsoft has just begun catching up with everyone else).

    Hate to be the one to break it to you, but everyone attacks their competitors. That's what makes for competition. It's a big, scary world out there where everyone tries to out-do each other.

    And, to Terc, beryl isn't meant to change the look of Linux... it's meant to be a desktop effects engine. Emerald changes the look. And that's why we have THEMES. As well as the ability to choose between entirely different desktops. Dumbass.

  • noamsml, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I know that to us geeks theme changes seem minor, but they leave quite more of a psychological impact than an advanced, stable kernel or an innovative programming interface. As much as this may sound silly, I believe that a theme change, if played off well, could be a huge factor in Mac sales.

Also if Apple doesn't come out with some pretty cool "Top Secret" features that will only make Apple look bad and disappoint all Mac users. But Apple has made some pretty bad mistakes in the past, so who knows?

    I am really looking forward to Macworld!

    even if there weren't any other features but the ones we know i'm already impressed. cause core-animation will bring so many possibilities how you design interfaces and it will be so easy for developers to create stunning & useful ui's that can blow everything away we know of now.

  • gweedoz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1After playing around awhile with Vista, it looks and feels rather cartoon-like and immature. I think the OSX look and feel is already ahead of it... however, OSX could still use a nice UI refresh, and given apple's good sense of taste, it is sure to be nice.

    All of those things or anything else along those lines cannot simply be integrated into an OS in a 2-3 month timeframe. That is of course, if you expect them to work as they should in a final release. If you're looking for iTunes 7 version 1 type of functionality, sure you can duct tape them in and promise a patch later down the road. I don't know about you, but I switched to OS X for the "It just works" promise. Not a duct taped half-assed job.

    like i said, probably the "secret" feature will come out with some new product they will be releasing or is released such as the ipod and iphone.

    some new feature that will not only hurt microsoft but is a response to the zune.
