- jord, on 10/12/2007, -16/+65are you seriously commenting on the misplaced capitalization of a letter?
- GGERG15, on 10/12/2007, -2/+21i just made my brother flip out becuase i gave his ipod back to him with the checkered display test!
- Flyinace2000, on 10/12/2007, -1/+16This just in Apple releases a new music player called the iPod............
BTW: If you run the Hard Drive Diag. test make sure you have it hooked up to a power supply. It sucks through battery power like no ones business. - sablazo, on 10/12/2007, -7/+18Christ, who the hell cares? It's Apple, not apple, but I see that all the time too. This is the internet, hardly anyone proofreads their 1-2 line posts...
To the people who are pissed about Ipod instead of iPod or whatever - try punctuating your comments correctly if you're that anal. - emceepecks, on 10/12/2007, -4/+14It may be old, but it's still very handy if something ever happens to your iPod
- NoahK, on 10/12/2007, -3/+13It's not old to me. Seriously, if it gets to the front page and it's useful, leave it alone. No need to post comments like, "I posted this a year ago." Get over yourselves!
- xcheats, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12The "Back" button is the rewind button.
- InsaneShow, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9While I agree this is old news, It is still good news. I've used the diag mode on a many iPod to fix them. Most people don't know about it until they need to know it. Now the digg readers that own iPods but never needed it know about it.
Dugg simply because it is a good resource about the diag mode. - mutt2jeff, on 10/12/2007, -5/+13The 5G is lumped in with the 4G since they have the same controls.
- Googled, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10Great! I tried out the HDD scan one and it's f**ked up my Ipod. It has been scanning my HDD for about 20mins and it's making a clicking noise!
- aDnAgReKl, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10I didn't know the iPod had a set of built in diagnostics.
by the way, What's the "back" button on 4G+ iPods? - sTiVo, on 10/12/2007, -5/+12People go to these comments to both discuss and view discussion on the article. We bury comments that are off topic, rude, and downright stupid. When you post a comment that's off-topic and contributes little to the discussion, expect to be buried so that the next guy has a better experience. -digg for both of you...
- thinktwice, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8I had forgotten about this. My 4G 20GB iPod recently stopped being recognized by Windows and iTunes. It would lock up both. I got the bad folder deal and all. Also got the screen referring me to the support site. There is a HUGE thread over there regarding iPods that not longer work (HDD failure they call it). I called customer support and without having to pay (my iPod was 2 months out of warranty) was told that I was basically SOL. I either could send it to them and pay $250+ bucks for them to fix or - and I quote - "Look at the new models and see what you like". I was pissed. Any way I resigned myself to getting a new iPod (4GB Nano) causing some serious problems with my wife. I put the old one in a drawer until that website that pays you for junked iPods came back online and could get $15-20 bucks for it.
Anyway I fish it out of the drawer use this diag mode and voila! It works again. iTunes recognized immediately and it's updating as we speak. WOW! I gotta go over to the Apple support forum and inform all those depressed folks. Yeeeha!!!!! Did I mention I'm totally jacked it's working again.
My first Digg too! - MrCobaltBlue, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Best Buy charges $29 to do this.

SysCfg (same as site) - GliTCH82, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6It may be old, but a lot of people seem to overlook the fact that when it comes to information consumed by masses, some people just don't have as much time as others. This could be the first time a lot of people are learning about this and if you read some of the comments right above your post you will find just that.
While I can understand that digg's dynamics are hard to predict that still doesn't make this article any less interesting. - bentwookiee, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6@JDOG: The "old news" comments get buried because they are useless. Don't tell us it's old news, do something constructive: report it with the "problem?" button and stop complaining.
- GliTCH82, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6WOOOWWW GUYS LINUX ON MY IPOD. So what? Do your balls feel heavier now?
Some people really couldn't care less - sTiVo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7I think people surfing the comments want to see comments on the technology, not "old news" or "what does this have to do with technology?" or "i saw this on digg last year". burying such comments kind of purify the discussion.
- ruindpzzle, on 10/12/2007, -4/+9yikes- please let us know how it turns out man.
- Bitgod, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Yes, "SRV" means it's a service unit.
- twitndiggfan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I've been needing this for a while, since i dropped my ipod a couple days ago, it finally had its death, i think. hopefully this will fix it lol.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5CubeFarmDrone: "blah blah blah NO DIGG!!!!!!!"
Thank you for taking the time to post on here why you, Mr. King Of The Internet, won't give your worthy "digg" to this story. We here at digg salute you, your highness. - spin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I accidentally found myself in this diagnostic mode on my nano just the other day. It was not documented in the book that came with my nano, but was nice to see all the same. I'm glad I know how to get back into it now :) thanks!
- nogami, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Tried this before on my 20gb iPod colour and while I did get the "chime" sound when rebooting, the screen stayed blank after that.
I think there are a few models this doesn't work on. - djmdave, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5Yeah I found out about this by accident when trying to fix my old 4G iPod. Some of the options are kinda cool to mess around with
- aDnAgReKl, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5Thanks for the help guys, I am aware that the menu button doubles as the back button. (a fact that seems to elude my wife, even after a year of owning my mini), but I could not bring the diagnostics from the directions on methodshop.
I finally did what "griz" suggested and I googled it. The "back" button on the methodshop article refered to the "REW" button, or the | - TinFoil209, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I got a question, it works with my iPod Video but when I go to Accessorize Test it shows:
Please plug FW
LCD ID : 2
FWPWR : 0
Does FW stand for FireWire?!? It was my understanding that Apple ditched the Fire-Wire controller chipset cause its a lot bigger in size than a USB controller. When i plug my USB cable it looks at me like i'm dumb. Love the "$" as a scroll position icon lol. Very curious about this... - TheGooseyOne, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5this is awesome, I'm in computer repair class next to the guy that submitted this story...and he was talking about how he had submitted it right when we found it on the front page
anyway, gonna have to try this on my ipod - keek4jc, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3It says on the top of my iPod 5G "SRV Dec 16 2005". Does anyone else have this? And does anyone know what this might mean?
The iPod I have is a replacement, so maybe that's what it is... - unusuario, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1lol
- Cine, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Found that out by accident a while ago. Just looked at my iPod, and it was doing some diagnosis - apparently, I had forgot to lock it before putting it in my purse. Couldn't figure out how to get out of the mode, so I had to wait a week until the batteries ran out. Heh.
- methodshop, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1ipod diagnostic page got moved. here's the new URL:
http://www.methodshop.com/gadgets/ipodsupport/diagnosticmode/ - gotspeed1212, on 07/30/2008, -0/+1the hp is headphone port plug your headphones it and it will move on
:) just had it do the same to me - ipodrepairs, on 03/13/2009, -0/+0It should be noted that if the ipod refuses to go into diagnostic mode and you hear a noticeable clicking sound, the hard drive is likely faulty.
http://www.kingipod.com/repair-diagnostics.html - tsupersonic, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Well I followed the directions, and went into one of the HDD tests, and now my iPod (4G Color) has frozen. It says "Read Verify Scan" and "Scan takes a while Before Scan: "
Then in the center of the screen "Start Scan..." I pressed like all the buttons, and nothing is working. I was worried that my battery was low, so I plugged in my iPod to the wall for power.
Edit: Never mind, I just reset it.
There are some cool diagnositcs in here, and it's new to me. - krogalsky, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0What did you do in diag mode to get it working again? Was it just the running of the diagnostics that fixed it, or did you have to do something in particular to get it working? My son's Ipod 4G has the same symptoms. I got into diag mode and tested the HD and checked out okay, but haven't run any of the other diags yet. Thanks for the help.
Ken - Luckychrm01, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0So I ran the full diagnostic check on my 20GB U2 ipod because Itunes told me that my ipod was corrupt and must be restored in order to be operatable and an option popped up to restore my ipod. The last thing I wanted to do is set my ipod back to factory conditions so I ran the diagnostic tests and it told me 1) that my USB had no connection and 2)my HP Failed. That's when things got worse.... when the screen on my ipod popped up that said HP DETECT HP FAIL the damn thing froze. It's been stuck on the same screen for the last few hours. I tried holding down the play/pause button, also the menu and select button at the same time since that's how I got it to reset, and toggled the hold switch to no avail. Does anybody have any ideas on what to try next or am I just screwed?
- Luckychrm01, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I also tried to connect it to the ac charger but it's not even charging anymore.... so yeah anybody have any advice?
- rokedeager, on 01/13/2008, -0/+0Ok so i have a Ipod photo 20GB and ill try to do diagnostics and ill press menu+select then wait for the apple to show up then ill press REW+select and it will make the beep sound and another like 2 beeps and it doesn't show anything. Any tips??? or is there something wrong with my IPOD.
- Dirk7589, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Iwas just having an ipod crisis and I found this today perfect. See DIGG really does save lives.
- adam98971, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1lol 29 bucks is a rip
- syrleb, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0hey hey, whats going on, just thought id add that iPOD diagnostics are *****, my ipod is completely ***** and it tells me everything is fine, my hard drive doesnt work properly, songs barely ever play, ive got a 5g and it ***** up after a month, so if you are in the market for an Mp3 player, ipods are not the way to go... i still love mine though, well i did when it worked
- darklight, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2Yeah, this is old..I've done this a ton of times accidentally, I never knew how to do it manully though.
Sweet - yugiohdan6, on 10/12/2007, -7/+3i hate it that when people say things like "Too true. Very very old. How did this make it to the front page anyway?" they get like -8 diggs on the comment....
the comment digging system i would imagine is NOT meant to be used like that... - InsaneShow, on 10/12/2007, -7/+2Happens in IE 7 also. But only if you allow pop-ups. It appears to be an active-x application that is in the popup. If iTunes is installed, it opens it up. If it isn't installed, it pops up and installation for it.
Neat? - CubeFarmDrone, on 10/12/2007, -9/+4I opened the page in my IE 6.0 browser at work and the thing tried to install iTunes. WTF. I know that IE has security flaws, but a page that is on Digg shouldn't exploit them. I normally use Firefox, but our intranet-based programs don't work well in it. NO DIGG!!!!!!!
- keek4jc, on 10/12/2007, -7/+2I agree . . .
- Tricky, on 10/12/2007, -7/+1I think I speak for all of us when I say, "well, DUH!"
- jeranon, on 10/12/2007, -21/+14are you seriously replying to his comment about the comment on the misplaced capitalization? rediculous ;)
