- thewebguy, on 10/11/2007, -5/+2pretty cool, but i'm holding out for unlocking it for use on t-mobile!
- fusionFactor, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Too bad not all the features will work if you ever DO get that to work. It's funny that not many people understand this. Take the visual voicemail, for instance. That is an AT&T only feature. Do you know of a T-Mobile phone / service that currently offers that? I think unlocking it to another provider before being supported is a stupid idea, especially when paying $600 to have a crippled phone.
- specialK16, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1OMFG!!! No visual voicemail!!! Yet I'm sure you'd be able to use wi-fi, google maps and most features of phone. Plus not having to pay for a contract is good enough for me. FREEDOM!

- themoose, on 10/11/2007, -2/+10You mean a zune?
- monospaced, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Zune can't connect to the internet with a WiFi connection. Where have you been?
- Zachariah, on 10/11/2007, -15/+1Why not, couldn't you just pun in your SIM chip from your current phone?
- Dradu, on 10/11/2007, -12/+2iWifi?
- hadiz, on 10/11/2007, -10/+68Kinda pointless, but good progress nonetheless. I look forward to the iPhone working on any GSM provider in the coming weeks.
- cyberdork, on 10/11/2007, -2/+21Why pointless? I for one am completely not interested in the phone functionality of the iPhone, but am drooling over the iPod and Wifi features. I wouldn't pay $500 for an iPhone, but for an iPod with such a big multitouch screen, Safari etc. I could see myself spending that amount of money.
- aaronm67, on 10/11/2007, -3/+2Or you could spend 1/2 the money and get a cool PDA that will allow third party apps and SIM cards, and probably have more functionalit.
- Leathersoup, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1It's sad that you're getting dug down for being sensible. Shows you how little reason there is in the Apple fan camp. They'd buy ***** from Steve Jobs if he stamped an apple logo in it. Wait a second most of them already have.
- aaronm67, on 10/11/2007, -3/+2Or you could spend 1/2 the money and get a cool PDA that will allow third party apps and SIM cards, and probably have more functionalit.
- RamezaniK, on 10/11/2007, -14/+5The iPhone won't and can't work on just any GSM provider. Rather, if it does, it would really suck. Apple has worked pretty closely with AT&T in making the iPhone. AT&T has spent $50M already, and is going to spend another $50M soon in retrofitting their network for the EDGE use with iPhone. The EDGE network is one of the most overlooked reasons why the iPhone is so cool. Without AT&T, iPhone won't be as cool as it is now. If you're going to drop the cash to buy one, you might as well switch over to AT&T anyways.
- optikschmoptik, on 10/11/2007, -0/+29Why? Because EDGE network has electrolytes! It's got what iPhones crave!
- dizzoknows, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4Best. Response. Ever.
- mediaphile, on 10/11/2007, -13/+1I'll electrolyte your ass. Shut up.
- GutterMoo, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3Welcome to CostCo, I love you.
- mediaphile, on 10/11/2007, -1/+14Please enlighten me as to how the EDGE network is one of the most overlooked reasons why the iPhone is so cool, when there is a far better 3G network readily available through AT&T. My $60 Sprint phone can browse the internet faster than the iPhone because it's on a faster network than EDGE. Every review I've read of the iPhone regards the speed of the iPhone's network to be the biggest drawback of the device. How can you possibly consider this to be one of its saving graces?
- greenmountain, on 10/11/2007, -8/+3Well mediaphile, You are Rong, so Rong Rong.
you clearly intentionally forgot to mention,or have missed the point of the truly great benefits of this revolutionery, paradime changing gooey boom boom.
No pesky phone calls bother you while you are surfing. This is the Great Edge.
Insanely great peace and quiet. Just think, (if this is possible for you to do)
iMagine you are so busy at Digg writing about how Rong Rong Rong some apple hater is and then suddenly, you're hole thoughts go Kaput Boom Gone because the Phone rings! Darnit!
Now you forget what you were going to say about some tasteless WinBloows Clone, who probably has not enough money and is Jealous of this paradigme changing iBoom boom.
Plus, the iBoom offers no electricty and bandwidth wasting online videos at all,(this wears out the
screen picksels too) plus you are free from worrying about downloads while iPhoning. Like, do I have a download? No you done't. There are none to worry about! Boom again. Ha.
Peace and quiet, a greener planet through longer battery life, your not worried about Globall warning, are you?
well no more of that gluttany waste of electrical bandwidth hogging.
But you dont care about this, do you?
You probably drive an SUV, dont you?
You are so Rong.- rabidstrike, on 10/11/2007, -5/+2the iphone wants to ***** your mom..
- GutterMoo, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3acctually EDGE isnt even all that great, maybe if some provider in the US would offer 3G you could get excited.
- rhino369, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0Verizon and Sprint cover 2/3 of our population with 3G coverage. And ATT itself covers a large portion of the population with 3g. Its Apples fault the Iphone is slow not ATTs
- greenmountain, on 10/11/2007, -8/+3Well mediaphile, You are Rong, so Rong Rong.
- specialK16, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Apple fanboys are now AT&T fanboys too!! God help us!
- optikschmoptik, on 10/11/2007, -0/+29Why? Because EDGE network has electrolytes! It's got what iPhones crave!
- drakethegreat, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3What makes you think other providers would offer service even if they did get the GSM to be universal? Yes digg me down iPhone fan boys. Cause common sense need not overtake your fantasy wet dreams.
- specialK16, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Seriosuly, locking phones completely beats the purpose of GSM.... thanks Corporations.
- cyberdork, on 10/11/2007, -2/+21Why pointless? I for one am completely not interested in the phone functionality of the iPhone, but am drooling over the iPod and Wifi features. - dtay2827, on 10/11/2007, -4/+2Clever deduction. It makes sense Big Government is similar to a big phone company. Why dig him down?
- elcamino, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0If you're still a republican, after the mess Bush has gotten this planet into, then you must be utterly retarded. Bush has undone the last 20 years of effort to reconcile the east and the west. And let me just remind you that it was the U.S., in your effort to fight of the commies, that made this mess in the first place. What, with training the Taliban and installing dictators both in Iran and Iraq. Yep, that was some great moves right there.

- ThinkBox, on 10/11/2007, -3/+20And I think its a toss up which has better games...
- mediaphile, on 10/11/2007, -9/+6Well, since Memory Stick Pro DUOs are only 2gb at the max, and are already incredibly overpriced, I could imagine the 4gb and especially the 8gb memory sticks going for at least half the cost of an iPhone. Not bad when you factor in the cost of the PSP itself. Let alone that the PSP can only do half the things the iPhone can; I don't remember there being an ability to take notes, read email, schedule calendar events, or view youtube videos on the PSP.
What an inane ***** comment.- gfnw, on 10/11/2007, -4/+10I can however code and run apps on my PSP to do just that.
No such luck on the iPhone. - LMaxey, on 10/11/2007, -2/+4About a week ago i picked up a 4gb memory stick duo at Circuit City for $50 so its a pretty good alternative
- zerodaysoon, on 10/11/2007, -2/+3dude, u obviously have not heard of psp-homebrew, theres psp-poste, that lets us view email and it supports smtp and pop!!! psp calendar lets us input dates into our psp and remember us on that day, and more more......the only thing the psp doesnt have is a touch screen!! get ur percentages right mang
and to the ignathius below, the iphone cant play metal slug, n64 games or even SNES games or even street fighter vs x-men!!

- LeeSoong, on 10/11/2007, -10/+1Methinks you do not understand the concept of 'Capitalism'?
Next version should cost $700 and $900 - iSheep will wait in line to buy it.
The next Samsung iPhone will have a 1.2 GHz CPU and 16 GB or 32 GB of RAM storage...- zpok, on 10/11/2007, -2/+0methinks you do not understand the concept of product development and return on investment. which btw have nothing to do with capitalism per se. Samsung will also have to sell their phones for about 50 % above parts price.
- mediaphile, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3Kinda like how the original MacBooks went up in price before the new version. Oh wait, they didn't.
Production costs decrease after time, and the cost of devices decrease over time. The next version of the iPhone will likely cost more than this version, but in six months the price of a first gen iPhone will be lower. That's how the market works.

- vinko, on 10/11/2007, -7/+3No, you cannot plug in another carriers' SIM card. Also there is a "feature" on the phone where it will cease to work after 4 months away from the AT&T network.
So, don't bother activating the iPhone in the US and than using it in another country.- kenok, on 10/11/2007, -1/+10How true is this?
- koguma, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I'm just wondering when someone is going to sue Apple &/or AT&T over this lock-in. The reason phones are sim-locked is to protect the service provider from losing money when they've subsidised the phone cost. Since there's no discount on the iPhone, the only reason for a sim lock is to screw YOU and all the other providers. What is preventing you from purchasing the iPhone then canceling the agreement? Is there a 'fine' that they will impose on you?
If that's the case, the cost of the iPhone is at least $1,800. What a ripoff.
- Sairgem, on 10/11/2007, -9/+6Let's just make one digg story to cover everything.

btw whats an iPhone? - Steinr, on 10/11/2007, -3/+2The question is will we be able to get them in Europe? like this anyone in the US putting them on Ebay unlocked?
- ozid, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1rumor has it vodafone and tmobile germany both want some iphone action. so you'll get them... but not unlocked.
- zpok, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1We'll get them unlocked or not at all. In Belgium, that is, where carriers aren't allowed to lock in customers. This piece of legislation will btw be adopted all over the EU. Which imo won't bother Apple at all, just the carriers, who have learned to cope and still make huge profits.
- Killah_xxx, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Actully, Ozid, I think this method will allow most people to get an unlocked iPhone, but without the phone capabilities as mentioned on the website. (So it will only work as a iPod and with WiFi.) Though I would say we should wait untill the phone gets over here *officially* before we try something like that.
- LeeSoong, on 10/11/2007, -2/+2I am waiting for the iPhone emulators:

- savingaurora, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1that is seriously possible. everytime there is an update in ipods they run the "deal" if your a student and you buy a computer you get a free ipod. They have recently done this deal so. I'm with you on this one
- monospaced, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Hopefully we'll have a touchscreen phone WITHOUT the freakin' iPod features. Honestly, a $200-$300 smart phone would be awesome. I don't need to store movies and listen to music on my phone.
- nonzzero, on 10/11/2007, -2/+4Is there anything DVD Jon can't do?
- alefox, on 10/11/2007, -2/+1get us all a free iphone
- csipod, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1I don't know what all the griping is about. I think a small tablet-esque wifi surfer and ipod is a nice combo. I'm sure we can get the price down here (http://istuff.freepay.com/?r=39009517) and guys and gals over at hackint0sh.org are working day and night to hack the phone and get us more features.
If we can hack this to run other apps.... a portable OS X Mac in the palm of your hand would be worth the price and hassel. - jason4567, on 10/11/2007, -5/+0if you feed the code at the bottom into a base64 decoder it comes up with the following
