- JohnnyBoy117, on 10/11/2007, -22/+148The iPhone without AT&T is like America without Bush.
- Millsee, on 10/11/2007, -16/+100What's an iPhone?
- Angostura, on 10/11/2007, -4/+84iPhone firmware update coming in 3.....2.....
- hadiz, on 10/11/2007, -10/+68Kinda pointless, but good progress nonetheless. I look forward to the iPhone working on any GSM provider in the coming weeks.
- imborden, on 10/11/2007, -3/+50$600 ipod + internet browser...kinda exactly what i wanted in the iphone...the ipod minus the phone
Now lets bring down that price - jollyroger814, on 10/11/2007, -4/+44Am I the only one who sees the irony in that this requires Microsoft .NET Framework to unlock an Apple phone. =P
- optikschmoptik, on 10/11/2007, -0/+29Why? Because EDGE network has electrolytes! It's got what iPhones crave!
- Dochtuir, on 10/11/2007, -4/+32too good to be true?
- ahouse, on 10/11/2007, -5/+31Hmm, you couldn't call... but you would have a wifi ipod!
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -6/+25A $600 8GB iPod that only surfs the web at Starbucks? No thanks.
- cyberdork, on 10/11/2007, -2/+21Why pointless? I for one am completely not interested in the phone functionality of the iPhone, but am drooling over the iPod and Wifi features. I wouldn't pay $500 for an iPhone, but for an iPod with such a big multitouch screen, Safari etc. I could see myself spending that amount of money.
- tnoy, on 10/11/2007, -5/+22No. This has an Apple logo!!
- ThinkBox, on 10/11/2007, -3/+20And I think its a toss up which has better games...
- doronster195, on 10/11/2007, -11/+27Wouldn't this technically be a PSP with built-in memory for twice the cost?
- Speed, on 10/11/2007, -3/+19Yes, becuase Apple is so special that they can lock their first cell phone so tight that nobody can crack it, even though no other cell phone company has ever achieved this feat...
/sarcasm (since I know somebody would miss it if I didn't specifically mention it) - Billions, on 10/11/2007, -5/+21I like where you're going with this! Can we extend the metaphor to say that adding MMS would be like finding Bin Laden?

Add “127.0.0.1 albert.apple.com” to c:/windows/system32/drivers/etc/hosts (Had to make backslashes into / for comments.)
Download Phone Activation Server v1.0 ( http://nanocr.eu/wp-content/PhoneActSrv-v1.0.zip ) to activate your iPhone for iPod+WiFi use. Note that this application will not do anything unless you understand the magic numbers as well as add the hosts entry. Phone Activation Server (PAS) requires that you have the MS .NET Framework 2.0 ( http://tinyurl.com/758p8 )installed.

- mediaphile, on 10/11/2007, -1/+14Please enlighten me as to how the EDGE network is one of the most overlooked reasons why the iPhone is so cool, when there is a far better 3G network readily available through AT&T. My $60 Sprint phone can browse the internet faster than the iPhone because it's on a faster network than EDGE. Every review I've read of the iPhone regards the speed of the iPhone's network to be the biggest drawback of the device. How can you possibly consider this to be one of its saving graces?
- imikedaman, on 10/11/2007, -3/+15Did you bother seeing where Engadget got its information from? I'll give you a hint: it's the same site.

btw whats an iPhone? - igothandle, on 10/11/2007, -1/+8Not without activating it first... this method activates it via a handshake with a localhost.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -11/+17iHate iPhone.
iBury. - gfnw, on 10/11/2007, -4/+10I can however code and run apps on my PSP to do just that.
No such luck on the iPhone. - jamescreese, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5http://files.photojerk.com/iphone/ will update as I can
- u2wedge, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5Because at&t doesn't make the iPhone?
- moisie, on 10/11/2007, -6/+11$600 ipod + internet browser + multitouch + far bigger screen + software to control orientation of video and to improve iPod functionality + wifi and so on
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -2/+7There's no 'crackless' device in the world, you must know this. Unlock the iPhone to work on any cell phone company is a matter of time. We could even see a modchip...
- kmatherly, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5My guess would be this Christmas we will have a new ipod w/o the phone.
- monospaced, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Zune can't connect to the internet with a WiFi connection. Where have you been?
- imborden, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4How dare you use iPhone as a proper noun :P
- fusionFactor, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Too bad not all the features will work if you ever DO get that to work. It's funny that not many people understand this. Take the visual voicemail, for instance. That is an AT&T only feature. Do you know of a T-Mobile phone / service that currently offers that? I think unlocking it to another provider before being supported is a stupid idea, especially when paying $600 to have a crippled phone.
- monospaced, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Hopefully we'll have a touchscreen phone WITHOUT the freakin' iPod features. Honestly, a $200-$300 smart phone would be awesome. I don't need to store movies and listen to music on my phone.

- barryh777, on 10/11/2007, -5/+844 diggs and it's down already
- drakethegreat, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3What makes you think other providers would offer service even if they did get the GSM to be universal? Yes digg me down iPhone fan boys. Cause common sense need not overtake your fantasy wet dreams.
- zodieman, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4That's because DVD Jon in on a Windows machine. If a hacker happened to be on a Mac he would have written either a Mac app or taken the PHP/Perl route to at least make it cross-platform.
- nonzzero, on 10/11/2007, -2/+4Is there anything DVD Jon can't do?
- GutterMoo, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3Welcome to CostCo, I love you.
- LMaxey, on 10/11/2007, -2/+4About a week ago i picked up a 4gb memory stick duo at Circuit City for $50 so its a pretty good alternative
