AT&T has spent $50M already, and is going to spend another $50M soon in retrofitting their network for the EDGE use with iPhone. The EDGE network is one of the most overlooked reasons why the iPhone is so cool. Without AT&T, iPhone won't be as cool as it is now. If you're going to drop the cash to buy one, you might as well switch over to AT&T anyways.

My $60 Sprint phone can browse the internet faster than the iPhone because it's on a faster network than EDGE. The reason phones are sim-locked is to protect the service provider from losing money when they've subsidised the phone cost. Since there's no discount on the iPhone, the only reason for a sim lock is to screw YOU and all the other providers. What is preventing you from purchasing the iPhone then canceling the agreement? Is there a 'fine' that they will impose on you?
If that's the case, the cost of the iPhone is at least $1,800. What a ripoff.
