- dandyhighwayman, on 10/12/2007, -22/+130Can someone confirm that the new MacBooks are out today? It is hard to tell just by looking at the 37 stories about it in the digg queue...
- dvpdziyn, on 10/12/2007, -17/+123Okay, we get it, you don't like the MacBook. That's alright - you don't have to buy it. And you don't have to feel inferior for not liking it. But you don't need to make the so-called 'fan-boys' feel like they're wrong for liking a double-OS booting, very portable (if not ultra-portable), slickly-designed, easy-to-use notebook. I like 'em - I may not buy one, but I like 'em.
- osbjmg, on 10/12/2007, -24/+121Chakz - This may help: http://www.goldsgym.com/
- mark1372, on 10/12/2007, -7/+85retral: It was a joke, you dork. It's funny because people are so into ego-posting that they'll submit the same story as 100 other people before them even though Digg tells you before it's posted that it's a dupe. People have a misguided impression that their particular submission making it to the front page is a prestige that matters to anyone other than themselves.
- retral, on 10/12/2007, -5/+63Sexy, but I don't like how the black is only available for the higher end model..
- Petronski, on 10/12/2007, -24/+80Chakz: "I want a full-featured, midpriced notebook that weighs 3.7 lbs not 5.2. That's what I want."
So buy the ***** Dell and shut your steaming snackpipe. Good grief. - quadvods, on 10/12/2007, -28/+81"Combo drive (DVD-ROM, CD-RW)" on a $1,099 laptop? What is this 2001?
Seriously? How is this acceptable to consumers? - PhysicsTheory, on 10/12/2007, -4/+51Saying it is CPU cost isn't accurate. It also has a better screen, larger harddrive, more memory, an iSight Camera, frontrow with a remote, etc...
- ghoppe, on 10/12/2007, -6/+53"The weight of this thing is 5.2 lbs?
The Sony SZ 13.3" laptops are 3.7 lbs and has better specs.
I don't why the 1.5lb difference."
*sigh*
Maybe the fact that the Sony SZ costs 33% more might have something to do with it... - drw2583, on 10/12/2007, -8/+54JESUS CHRIST, it's FIVE POUNDS! Stop complaining about the weight. If you are incapable of carrying around a FIVE POUND object without crying I suggest you look into a membership at your local health club...
- tocircuswn, on 10/12/2007, -11/+55Seriously
For an entry level notebook, you're getting iSight, frontrow (which for all it's praise still isn't getting what it deserves) and the entire iLife suite included.
And some added bonuses: no virus/spyware/IE mess you have to worry about and being the envy of all your friends. - blueigloo, on 10/12/2007, -8/+47Unfortunately, if you go and configure an SZ laptop to match the lowest end macbook - what do you get for a price? I get $1639.99. It may have better graphics, but for $600 more ? (I added XP Pro and an extended battery, because XP Home doesnt compare to OSX at all and these new macbooks seems to have some kicking battery life)
- Mesach, on 10/12/2007, -9/+47Forget the Weight issue
What is in the black paint coloring that seems to be worth the extra $200!? - allancorbett, on 10/12/2007, -2/+361280x800 :]
- merr, on 10/12/2007, -2/+35So just yesterday I ordered the lowest end MBP (with the 1.83 GHz Duo). Today, they release this new machine and, in the same stroke, oust the MBP model I bought. As a result, I automatically got and upgrade to the next model (2.0 GHz) for the same price. Kudos to Apple on not just sending me the other one anyway. =)
- neokoenig, on 10/12/2007, -8/+40The Black model seems a rip off - an extra £100 or so quid for an extra 20 gigs of HD space?
Why didn't they release a black low spec one? - ryogahibiki, on 10/12/2007, -13/+44Chicks DIG black Macs.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+29Also note that the iBooks, and 12" PowerBook is gone too
- barthosch, on 10/12/2007, -9/+36@quadvods: "Combo drive (DVD-ROM, CD-RW)" on a $1,099 laptop? What is this 2001"
No, back in 2001 you had to pay $2,300 for an iBook with combo drive. - po6ot, on 10/12/2007, -5/+26Talking of rip offs... why does the black UK MacBook cost £200 more than its US counterpart?
UK MacBook costs 1,028.99
US MacBook costs $1499 = 812
Cheap flight to New York anyone? - geminitojanus, on 10/12/2007, -7/+27You're disappointed by a sub-6 pound laptop? Are you kidding me? My last HP weighed near 9lbs and it was a back breaker.. this one's even lighter than my current iBook.
- simonecaldana, on 10/12/2007, -4/+23Intel GMA950 with shared memory. 'nuff said.
- Arbinshire, on 10/12/2007, -5/+24"Come on Apple, were not that stupid."
You sure about that? Were != We're
Contractions are difficult things for some people. - UltraNurd, on 10/12/2007, -1/+18People generally don't buy iBooks for gaming or graphics work, so it doesn't need to be beefy.
- bking, on 10/12/2007, -2/+19Notice how apple keeps saying "Meet the MacBook family" and "The Family is complete"
No 12-13" MBP. This is it. - smedrick, on 10/12/2007, -5/+21You're getting modded down because it only needs to be said once. We can all read the specs.
- geminitojanus, on 10/12/2007, -4/+20"Saying it is CPU cost isn't accurate. It also has a better screen, larger harddrive, more memory, an iSight Camera, frontrow with a remote, etc..."
That's not the point; the processors they were getting from Freescale cost $40-60 a pop, depending on the speed. The new Intel processors retail at ~$300, so after Apple gets the ordinary volume purchaser deal, and whatever other contracts they've worked out, they're still probably looking at $120-$160 per machine. That's more than enough of an increase on CPU cost alone to increase the cost of the entire platform by $100. (and I was never intending to point out that they were prohibitively or injustly more expensive; I completely agree with the raise in price). - jesusphreak, on 10/12/2007, -3/+19People don't spend money on Macs purely because of specs. They spend money on them for the quality of the design, OS, and everything about them.
- tymaishu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+15this has a different keyboard that looks odd. I wonder how it feels.
- Kendal, on 10/12/2007, -3/+17The black on is higher speced on the CPU, and, black plastic is more expensive, because it requires more panda DNA and dolphin tongues.
- databyss, on 10/12/2007, -4/+17@Mesach
"After configuring the white one to 80GB the price only goes up $50"
So 20GB = $50?
"so whats with the black coloring costing $150?"
Tis the price of style. Maybe they painted the hard drive black too. - Enitime, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14"The higher end model doesn't just have a larger HD."
Yeah it does. Upgrade the mid-range macBook from 60 to 80GB, and you get the same specs though.
The black colour adds $150 to the price. - althe3rduww, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14if it was illuminated their would be even less reason to get the macbook pro since the macbook has just about everything else already. (isight build in, front row, etc)
- chewbaka, on 10/12/2007, -7/+20I'm looking forward to iSight. My friend just got a macbook pro and uses the camera to record entire lectures and he says it compresses to something really small.
I can't believe I'm buying into all this Apple iLife stuff but I'm really excited to get this when my current notebook craps out. - diggitydank, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14That is very nice. I was afraid it would be another 1024 x 768.
- Mesach, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14@databyss

After configuring the white one to 80GB the price only goes up $50, so whats with the black coloring costing $150? - jasonwc, on 10/12/2007, -5/+17These prices look very competitve. Now that Bootcamp is available, and the base price of the Macbook is only $1100, more Windows users might consider Apple's offerings.
- arizonagroove, on 10/12/2007, -4/+16Exactly what I was thinking. An extra 20Gbis not worth and extra £100. The black colour comes at a very big premium.
- ericrolph, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12If you want something to game on then get a MacBook Pro with an ATI Radeon 1600X and a $6 optical mouse from Newegg and shut up.
- diafel, on 10/12/2007, -5/+17Digg: Where we really care about legality
- adebened, on 10/12/2007, -3/+15I don't quite understand how this is just 180 grams less than the 15 inch macbook pro. It must be a small but dense.
- geminitojanus, on 10/12/2007, -17/+28"Talking of rip offs... why does the black UK..."
Because your taxes suck. Take it up with your country, it's been that way for ages now. - althe3rduww, on 10/12/2007, -4/+15you were just jealous cause you didn't have any slow jams
- bontaq, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11Oh, I found what I was looking for :
{
I wrote a really simple GL fill rate test app just to get a very rough idea of the performance across the different GPUs. It's just a simple rectangle-textured polygon blend benchmark, designed to measure very simplistic compositing performance (as might be used by the WindowServer).
GeForce 7800GT: 3325 megapixels/sec
CoreDuo iMac 20": 1137 megapixels/sec
Core Duo Mini: 802 megapixels/second
iMac G5: 778 megapixels/second
PowerBook G4: 662 megapixels/second
G4 Mac Mini: 288 megapixels/second
}
(Source is an Arstechnica article, I trust them)
Since the Macbook shares the same graphics chipset, I think we can expect similiar performance. Its really not all _that_ terrible. :) - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12haha yeah i noticed the color price difference too, its actually $150 more for the black
(choose white 2.0 and add the 80 GB hard drive and they're the same - millixaw, on 10/12/2007, -5/+15Both the Powerbook 12" and the iBooks are out of the store. The MacBook effectively replaced both units.
So, no 12" Core Solo (ULV) super-light, rather-inexpensive notebook??? :'-( - betasp, on 10/12/2007, -14/+24... you will get modded does because neither of those PCs can run OSX (legally) therefore you comment is lame.
- markormesher, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12Comparison between batterys of generic Sony Laptop and iBook (which were notorious for hogging more power than the Mac line.) After 6 months the sony's battery needed reconfiguring (a long and boring process in which you have to manualy drain the battery) iBook? 2 YEARS later, still havent messed with it. iBook gets slightly more time 3.5 hours, with the sony clocking in at a normal pc laptop 2-2.5.
But hey, thats just me, what do I know? I'm just your Joe Schmo. One who happened to advise his company to move to mac laptops, because they are 10X better than any comparably priced Wintops. - cmiller1, on 10/12/2007, -11/+21because those windows users are so ridiculously zealous over their operating system that they must defend it to the death despite obvious technical shortcomings. I know I'll get modded down, and no windows user will take a word I say seriously, but Windows is really, REALLY bad and your life would be a million times better if you got a Mac. The most common reaction is "so THIS is what computing is supposed to be like!" It's not that Apple is particularly great or anything, it's just that Microsoft has no business being a technology leader like it is, nearly every single product it has released was not as good as the competition's, I've used a lot of MS software over the years and it is really really bad. It seems that everyone on the MS campus seems to lose all common sense upon entering.
- althe3rduww, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10tests from the mac mini have confirmed it runs video (h.264 even) very well. The mac mini has the same GPU
