Vista is scheduled to be released? - yonis, on 10/12/2007, -5/+85I'm fine with the animation as long as Time Machine will let me get documents from the future too.
- pzarker, on 10/12/2007, -5/+72over priced wet dream? im not sure whats overpriced. Did you see the new price points for the Mac Pro, dell's pricing for somehting equivilent doesn't even come close. Same for the Xserve. The price myth has been officially shot down.
Another thing, system restore never works. There is always some problem. And its not exactly the same thing as time machine. Time machine isn't supposed to fix your machine from a bad install, but its to help you find lost documents.
know what you are talking about before you go and flame someone. - graystar, on 10/12/2007, -10/+74It is a shame microsoft doesn't have a timemachine because then they could go back and sneak in some extra programming time and actually release on time.
- jl24, on 10/12/2007, -9/+54Apologies I can't type today. Should state 'the next installment FOR Macintosh systems'.
- arnaudh, on 10/12/2007, -7/+51C'mon. If you're going to build a Time Machine, you might as well do it in style.
- ubergmr, on 10/12/2007, -6/+50i hate how people always reply to the first post the get there comment closer to the top, none of the above comments have anything to do with the parent
- bSimms, on 10/12/2007, -5/+46iChat lives!
- weareglass, on 10/12/2007, -8/+48Looks like we can say adios to brushed metal. Don't let the door hit your ass on the way out, brushy.
- geekdreams, on 10/12/2007, -2/+42In a free app bundled with the OS? Really? And the framework is available to all apps for a system-wide solution?
- mateo60, on 10/12/2007, -8/+43Its the developers conference. It mainly focuses on "pro" items. I would've been suprised if they released a new ipod at this keynote. Of course, one never knows.
- ridgelawrence, on 10/12/2007, -2/+36Controlling your friends desktops though iChat looks so Awesome and simple, i cant wait.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -5/+38I hope to God that we don't have to have .Mac for these extra features. .Mac is by far the biggest waste of $99+/yr I've ever seen.
Chax takes care of the tabs. But I noticed that Apple is putting an end to VirtueDesktops with this release! - arnaudh, on 10/12/2007, -2/+33Oh please. See, that's Apple's problem. People always expect so much from Apple. If Cupertino doesn't deliver anything less than jaw-dropping, some blasé people are instantly disappointed, whereas nobody really expects anything remotely cool from Microsoft or Dell (to the point that when MS gets something right, people are actually impressed now).
- jl24, on 10/12/2007, -12/+42Are people overall impressed with the keynote and Leopard in particular. I like Apple and love Tiger, but they just seem to be running out of ideas. I hope the 'TOP SECRET' features are worth the wait.
- TwoSlick, on 10/12/2007, -1/+30@iSEPIC
So Windows comes with those things by default and Free? I didn't think so. (Sorry. I just have to point these kinds out to people like you who are obviously flaming without any kind of clue) - lo0ol, on 10/12/2007, -7/+35I half-heartedly wish they would stop putting these cool video features in iChat since I love Adium so much. Adium really has to get cracking on video integration (which I know is no small task), or I might end up starting to look more at iChat. With built-in tabs it appeals to me even more.
- jl24, on 10/12/2007, -3/+31Yeh they look good, I was just expecting a bit more. And as I said I hope the 'TOP SECRET' features are worth the wait and I'm sure they will be. I've never been disappointed with any Mac OS X update. Maybe I just need to watch Steve and the Keynote so I can see things in action. Text based commentary from engadget doesn't do any Keynote justice
- noneloud, on 10/12/2007, -2/+29haha....the way that it functions is just great though. :)
- mateo60, on 10/12/2007, -3/+29The time machine interface is really kick ass.
- jl24, on 10/12/2007, -5/+30But.....Mac Pro's look awesome!
- geekdreams, on 10/12/2007, -13/+37The Time Machine animation looks a little cheesy, I hope there's a way to turn off that background in System Prefs.
- btipling, on 10/12/2007, -7/+31'Stationary in mail' Oh god, please don't email me with your html/image heavy apple stationary emails. Thanks.
- fahimi, on 10/12/2007, -1/+24I would block iSEPIC, but then I wouldnt be able to digg down his comments... This is a serious ethical issue.
- cmiller1, on 10/12/2007, -6/+27Apple's REAL problem is that they produce top notch hardware with the world's most advanced operating system on it for low low prices and everyone seems to have to invent some fake "problem" with them for why they don't use this computer vendor.
- rgov, on 10/12/2007, -1/+21"From G3 to Xeon, from MacBook to Xserve, there is just one Leopard."
http://www.apple.com/macosx/leopard/64bit.html - threepio, on 10/12/2007, -2/+22Unless you'd rather your competition not try to cram your new UI into their OS.
- Lutz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+20Apple build their new operating system on a wormhole and you complain?!
- smokeyghetto, on 10/12/2007, -11/+30Are you kidding me with that comment.... Everything he mentioned is pretty remarkable.
Just wait for the goods. The stuff they dont want to talk about yet. - threepio, on 10/12/2007, -2/+20It's not a yo-mamma joke, but let's face it, yo mamma, my mamma and his mamma prefer pretty email.
- igraham09, on 10/12/2007, -2/+19@catchneyez...
currently (in OS X 10.4.7) when you drag something to the trash and empty the trash, that file isn't actually "deleted". the only thing that happens when you empty the trash is that the computer tells itself that the 1s and 0s that those files occupy are ready to be overwritten with different 1s and 0s of a different file. so in actually when you empty the trash you dont actually delete anything, those files are just inaccesible by normal means (through the finder and such). There are, nowadays, prgrams that can retrieve those typically inaccessible files.
now, if you want to TRULY delete something, that is, to overwrite all of its 1s and 0s with only 0s (this is called "zeroing"), all you have to do is go up to the Finder menu and choose "Secure Empty Trash". doing that will actually DELETE the files in the trash. doing that will make them inaccessible to even those special programs
in short: when you empty the trash, you dont actually delete anything, you just signal to the computer that that data is ready to be overwritten. when you secure empty the trash, you really do delete the files. - CoconutKC, on 10/12/2007, -3/+20I've never bought a Mac before. This Leopard OS will be my first. =)
- weareglass, on 10/12/2007, -3/+20iCal has always had To-Do and Stickies was always a great note-taking device, this is just a different and more expansive way of integrating them into the OS. It's not just about the idea, it's about the implementation.
- fahimi, on 10/12/2007, -2/+18iChat Theater sounds beautiful... As macrumorslive.com noted, if you can share photos, you can share video, whether it be in straight up video form or embedded in a Keynote. So you can share a movie with a few friends over iChat, AND you can have the annoying person asking questions every few minutes on the voiceover capabilities... from the comfort of your own Mac! Totally worth doing, still. Brilliant idea. I may have a reason to stop using Adium...
- philgmo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+16I highly doubt that since the only just stopped selling G4-based systems in the last couple of months. Aren't G3's still supported in Tiger?
- Gardenhead, on 10/12/2007, -3/+18Death to Lisa, all hail the new speech Alex!
- somnambulist, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14Screen sharing has been built into Mac OS X for awhile, too (See http://www.apple.com/remotedesktop/) Integration in iChat is a refinement of an existing feature and its introduction to the consumer world instead of the admin market.
- weareglass, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15You know, upon further reflection, they sure talked a big talk on their banners. I like these features, but I really do hope the 'Top Secret' stuff is up to snuff. In all the videos I've watched they've somehow avoided showing the Finder, for instance.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15The big difference here is that System Restore won't touch your personal files (MP3s, Documents, etc.), but instead restores the system drivers & OS files back.
Jobs said that Time Machine will let you do a full-on recovery of your computer (assuming it's stored externally), or a recovery of a particular file.
The iPhoto implementation is the most useful, though. It's often that I remove unattractive (not of me, of course!), large photos from my Library, simply to need it again in a couple months.
Space is tight, and Leopard will ensure that I invest in a sizable external backup. - wpholmes, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15There are many freeware apps for Virtual Desktops on OS X too, so it's no windows advantage.
- althe3rduww, on 10/12/2007, -4/+17You do not need .Mac for any of these new features. STOP THE FUD!
- littlebiker, on 10/12/2007, -3/+15I think TimeMachine is great. Backups are always a problem. I back up my machine only once in a month just 'coz I am lazy to burn stuff and don't have a superdrive yet. Time Machine seems great and very very useful! full marks to apple for getting such a thing on.
So which your pick of the features - just created a quick poll for it - http://www.tezaa.com/view/most_impressive_leopard_feature_at_wwdc_2006 - woh! I can't wait for spring 2007! - jeriqo, on 10/12/2007, -8/+20I agree.
That background is really ugly and totally un-apple. - LoungeActx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12@zergypoo
Look at the processors on the Dell you configured. They aren't the same. The Mac Pro is a Quad Core computer. - bsuto, on 10/12/2007, -3/+15It looks like they're keeping brushed metal in Safari and the Finder... just look at the movies on the preview site. iChat, though, looks unified -- very nice. If only that appearance will spread throughout the rest of the OS.
- rgov, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13Something tells me that "Like saving a game in Civilization 4, Xcode 3.0 lets you go back in time without repercussions. If only reality worked this way at the Pentagon..." wasn't sanitized by the PR department.
- angelp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11For those that are disappointed....blame all the bloggers who got you all hyped up believing Apple would announce fancy new iPods, brand new laptops, and whatever else they were dreaming about. They do it everytime and then everyone blames Apple because they didn't live up to the hype that OUTSIDERS created.
- CrankyMcGuy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13I'm with you. Time Machine seems potentially useful. I just hope I can do it without the cheesy SFX. System Wide to-dos seems a great idea as well, plus webclip and dashcode - making widget creation almost intuitive. Very cool stuff. Spaces may not have invented virtual desktops, but I bet Apple's implementation is top notch. I'm looking forward to it.
I've noticed a lot of killjoys out there - as well as cheerleaders. There can be a happy space between drooling fanboy and Mac hater. Some of us are just intrigued with what we saw and look forward to the real release info this January. -
