- michaelstone, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6This article is a crock of *****. Because Intel allowed Apple to air an ad saying their other customers are boring, that makes Apple absuive? Apple's always done that. That's what you have to do when you have such a small marketshare. I mean, we all know that an iMac or Mac mini is cooler than a Dell Box.
It also says that Dell switched to AMD processors because of Apple's ad. A switch like that would take months to engineer. Apple's add just premiered a month ago. Do the math. And there's another reason to switch too: currently, AMD is doing better. - FunkyWitDaSysTm, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3ya know, i'm a huge apple fan and all, but if you look at how apple seems to end a lot of its partnerships badly in the name of "progress", i wouldn't entirely question the validity of this argument. and while steve jobs is a great public speaker, he's pretty know for being an *sshole. i would expect his "reality distortion field" effects his relationship with his partners as well as his employees.
at this point, though, i'd think that most companies would rather take the abuse and hope thier joint venture becomes the next ipod. look at motorola/cingular for example. he got them to deploy these crappy phones with OOO! itunes. very limited, too. and expensive, with no way to get songs on or off other than buying them on the phone. everyone played along with jobs just to be the first on the market with a multimedia phone, but partnered with with the market-encapsulating itunes. while it failed, iit provided very useful usage information that will make the next itunes-capable phone (the RAZR V3i and SLVRi combined with a broadband network courtesy of cingular) much more successful.
but who ultimately had to pay for the failure? mostly motorola and cingular. apple has a clever way of having others take the fall when a partnered venture fails-- not that the blame necessarily belongs to apple, but you have to admit, they're pretty slick-- just like their products. - NetSliderX, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5Holier than thou attitude? Apple? I dare say that Apple has ALWAYS been this way with Jobs at the helm. Dare I also mention that this attitude has bit them in the ass already? Apple has been around for thirty years (as of April Fools Day 06') They started out at the top of the world with this attitude. Continued on for about ten years of it's life on top of the freaking world! Then, what? Fifteen years pass until a lowly engineer creates the iPod? Now, we're going on a good six years of being back on top... Half of the entire life of the company has been in the crapper!!! Why? BECAUSE of this attitude! Started with Macintosh. Jobs felt he had the best and made sure everyone knew it! No matter who he pissed off! Then the Mac died, save for it's loyalist fanboys. Apple and Jobs have been sooo nice since Jobs was iCEO. Playing by the rules! Why? Because they had NO choice. Hard to piss off the only people in the world that even WANT your product!!! Now, the iPod rules the world. So guess who thinks they own the world now? APPLE! So, yes, I believe that Apple can be an abusive partner. Depending on how much success they have at the time of partnership :)
Now, before I am flamed, please know that I am typing this on my 20'' iMac Core Duo. I have been using Macs almost exclusively since 4th grade. I'm 24 years old now. I've owned a classic, performa, iMac Bondi, Powerbook G3, Mac Mini and and the iMac CD. I AM THE DEFINITIVE APPLE FANBOY!!!! But I know how to call bullsh** when I see it. I am extremely pleased and excited that my favorite brand is on top again. Even if it's not for the PC market (...) But I do NOT want to see a repeat of the Mac/Windows fiasco. If any top brass from Apple is reading this, please know this... Microsoft brought Windows... Is it possible someone can outdo (or at least outsell) the iPod in the not too distant future? Keep this in mind before you treat your partners like pieces of garbage. Rant OFF. - jedijome, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2lol i love the apple propaganda.
one of thoseboring, everyday tasks i've done on my pc the last few years is play games, yes along with photoshop, word, excel, powerpoint and movies i play lots and lots of games on my pc. oh wait and how many games comes of the macs?
what do the majority of people do on macs? photoshop? word? watch movies? listen to music? so they do everything i do except they have no games to play, or they have games which are a year or older by the time they get them. and jobs has the audacity to call pc's boring little machines?
talk about lies and propaganda, this is what i hate about apple. their smug attitude. - David513, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Why is it news that Apple positions its products as better than the other "dull" PCs using Intel chips? I'm sure H-P think that its computers are better than Dell's (and vice versa). So what? That's normal business. Apple was the only one of the Intel-based companies that happened to be clever enough to make a point of similarity into a point of differentiation. Apple positions its computers as different from the rest. Now that Macs are using the same chip that drives most of the rest of the PC market, Apple needed a way to say, "we're better, even if we use the same chips." I doubt that Intels cares one way or another how Apple markets Macs, as long as they contain Intel chips. I doubt the other PC makers are lying awake night worrying about Apple dissing them in the ad. Apple has been dissing Windows PCs for years. This is just a slightly new way. So what? It's not news.
David - Rajio, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Intel just walked into a door, ok? nothing happened.
besides; I, for one, WANT my computer doing 'dull little tasks' ... that way I dont have to do them myself. - Backlash, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It's like daddy just hit mommy at the dinner table. - Dane Cook
- jasqwerty, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It's funny when you can blatantly lie and people are too stupid or apathetic too care.
Truth:
Intel has always been better of the PowerPC architecture
Apple Advertising:
We rape the Intel chip six ways from Sunday
Truth:
Macs were lagging in real world performance and also financially in the company, which is currently facing the end of the flood in of iPod profits, so they try to get a people attracted by using the x86 platform architecture
Apple Advertising:
The Intel chip/company was a piece of useless ***** till we got to it - sofa0ne, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I have always disliked when an advertiser attempts to belittle the competition by making an opinionated statement that doesn't hold true. Boring PC? Well okay so it's just a beige box, but it at least affords me the ability to open the case easily and to put in what I want, when I want.
I like my Intel Procs too and I wouldn't call it boring at all... - ldenman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1i'm the person who says that.
I will make a mental effort to stop. - jinexile, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Intel is known for it's bully tactics as well, not even crocadile tears from me.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3I think you'll find that sooner or later Apple's holier than thou marketing will come back to bite them on their ass. I don't think Intel will allow them to mock the majority of their customer base, just so that they can continue to be the attention whore of the computer world. Consider the shark jumped.
- intoflatlines, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0this article made me laugh
digg - royeiror, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Wasn't there a problem with intel a few months ago? remember that lawsuit that AMD had against intel for some kind of abuse towards partners if their percentage of AMD chips exceeded some small quantity?
i think dell was the one who was abused the worst, so that's why they changed to the athlon 64 and turion... i think, i'm not claiming anything...
BTW does anyone know if the turion chipset is as good if not better than centrino? i know that 64 bit architecture is closer to the future than the pentium M but i have no clue about anything else - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1"You know those people who, during an uncomfortable moment, say "Awk-warrrrd..."? And that makes the moment so much worse? Well, CNN Money is that guy, and Intel's Apple deal is that uncomfortable moment."
Best article summary on Digg, ever.
This year I will build up the courage to slap people like that. - stoops, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Quick! Say hello to AMD to rid of that moment Apple. Long live macs/os x/ipod/itunes biatchiz
- Anticitizen1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0yeah, jobs wont be able to take intel though, intel will stay strong. and apple is deffinately abusive, but they have to be, theyre fighting for what they cant win...
- rebrad, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Intel's reign is over and has no choice but to play the bitch role. Hail the new King AMD. An intelligent consumer would always choose AMD over Intel unless they are looking for just another iToy.
- jk_baller23, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0wasn't dell thinking about having an option of amd's before the ad? If Apple was so abusive, why do networks allow their tv shows to be downloaded through iTunes? Apple isn't abusive, they just want to make great products.
- sonicworx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I knew when I saw that commercial Intel was going to have a hissy fit.
- calhoun, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The insinuation that Dell switched to AMD because of this ad is idiotic.
- cheifchuck0, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I dugg just for the article's summary. "Awk-waaard", lmfao.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0There is absolutely no way Intel has not agreed to air that ad. It's a partnership, Apple uses the Intel brand in the ad. Of course Intel say "go right ahead". And of course they have to come out after and say to Apple that the ad is a bit too much.
It's business after all. People are supposed to get pissed off and cause drama. - ldenman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Keep smoking the cheeb.....ugh.
- capn_caveman, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2will digg to spite the apple freaks defending their precious corporation.
- chair, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'm not digging because i don't really think it's accurate, especially about the Dell/AMD thing. But I have to say that's a fantastic first paragraph :)
- OriginalGamer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Well I'm glad that instead of just whoring out the Pentium 4 again like Intel has been doing for almost 5 years now they decided to come out with a totally brand new designed chip for the new Macs and not just a small upgrade like the Pentium D. And as far as the ad goes, Apple is aiming to win, a little trash talk towards PCs is expected. The ad made Intel look good anyway, Apple's innovative attitude rubs off.
- AttroPheed, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Is Intel hardup for cash? Why let a client that would be lucky to sell a million cpus talk ***** about clients that will easily shift 50 times that number?
- albel65, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Does this have a connection with dating violence week? Because i smell conspiracy...
- 0Troy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Cleanroom bunnysuit?! Say it ain't so!
Pretty good article. Digg - skunkman62, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0does anybody read long comments?
- mkjones, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Poor Intel, surely they cant be this desperate for revenue.
- gotamd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Some of the conclusions are wrong and the Dell-AMD deal is far from finalized (it's not even officially confirmed). However, the main point of the article, about how it wasn't exactly nice of Apple to bash the *other* 90% of Intel's clients is very valid.
- chrism1128, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I would love to see how badly Steve Jobs was abused as a child.
He's so damn angry.
Don't worry Steve, eventually the lambs will stop screaming and you'll be able to make nice with people. - logicalguy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0...pfft...amd owns intel. they may not have the the greater market share but that's the reason why i say they OWN THEM...the do more with less money...less cpu cycles and memory controllers....AMD OWNS!
And my amd "boring box"? would OWN a lil mac anyday.
digg----the commercial says it all...lol - Jeremy82465, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Its amasing. When an article bashing windows based system all the apple fanboys are all for it and throw in their two cents to help bash the system, and often even windows take a stab at their own systems because, we all know that it sucks but its what we have to live with, but when a article comes out bashing apple (and this isnt the first instance something like this has happened) they get all up in arms. "Oh no its not possible, Apple is God, Apple is teh leet!" Ah well, live in denial all you want. Apple put out an offensive add without the consent of Intel and it pissed off Dell, and although AMD is indeed better than Intel, im sure Dell and Intel had some sort of agreement to scratch eachothers back (I mean ***** they put intel inside on all of their machines) and this broke the deal. Intel took a hit to the pockets but they now sell to both sides of the team so they will suck it up and live with it.
- spamdies, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0digg, since it goes that apple users bash windows users, its only appropriate that the apple company follow suit.
- jedijome, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i wish we could edit posts. sorry for the typos.
- psients, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1"Some of the conclusions are wrong and the Dell-AMD deal is far from finalized (it's not even officially confirmed). However, the main point of the article, about how it wasn't exactly nice of Apple to bash the *other* 90% of Intel's clients is very valid."
NO. IT'S. NOT.
Everyone's gone mad. Intel's other clients are Apple's competitors. Just because they use the same supplier doesn't all of sudden make them buddies. If anything it makes them even more competitive. - zunigbab, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Oh come on, the Dell shift to opening their doors to AMD ha s been coming for awhile. A company like Dell doesn't make multi-million dollar decisions like this on a whim. It's not like Michael saw the Apple ad, got all P.O.'d and called Paul to whine about it. Then he goes to AMD when Paul won't give him a cookie for his boo-boo!
Dell has a responsibility to only 2 groups and they are Customers & Investors. If investors thought this was some sort of personal grudge match being played out, Dell's stock would drop like a stone.
Aside from this, what company doesn't poke his competitor in the eye with a red hot poker every time he gets the chance.
Finally, Intel has no control over how Dell or Apple acts publicly. This like saying the guy selling coffee beans to Starbucks can tell them not to make fun of Folgers. - jasqwerty, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@zwilliams
Really? Then show me some actual comparisons between the chips. I can tell you that any legit ones I have seen have had whatever Apple was shoveling out the door being beaten by an Intel chip that was at least a year older, 25% cheaper. But whatever, I won't do your research for you. Notice I said Apple, not IBM. IBM hasn't been giving Apple the cream of the crop engineering wise for close to a decade.
Also, how much more of the iPod line do you think they can ship? There stock isn't taking a hit recently because they're predicting such a bright future you know. And maybe your dumb ass should actually look at what financial results they post? I'll even do the research for you on this one simply because its funny how ***** wrong you. :-)

Apples: "We made that iPod you and your friends have, wanna buy a computer?" - Lynxpro, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0
The iSight did not perform like a $20 Windows webcam. The iSight is Firewire based. Very few Windows based webcams are Firewire based. The last one I saw available in a store (from ADS I believe) also sold for $150 at the time of its debut. And its actual design was not as great as the iSight.
Now, if you were Intel, what type of commercial would you prefer? A "Dell Dude" commercial shot on a consumer grade DV cam or a stylish Apple production (with decent cinematography) that actually praises Intel? Yeah, tough choice there. - Terjon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Ok, this is simply unfair. Far too many people are saying that AMD doesn't have a good mobile chip. I feel that's a crock of *****. I'm writing this comment from my AMD Athlon 64 Mobility 3200+ laptop, which gives me 2 and half hours of battery and far more power than the Intel mobile chips in the same price range (1000-1200 for the laptop).
- frem001, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0well it's true 90% of them are boring, mods and other operating systems being the exception. I remember a time when AMD was a pos brand with faulty hardware, good to see that change and they're on top of their game on the desktop front. hopefully intel will release something good for the mac pro
- kalisphoenix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Hey, I read zwilliam's comment.
It was a hell of a lot more interesting than the article, which is simply asserting yet again that a lot of PC ricers with neon tubes in their cases and LEDs in their fans have their panties in a twist. "How the hell is Unreal Tournament a dull little task? *sniff* *****! I know that Hewlett-Packard is pissed. The CEO told me so. He said, 'n00b, we're pissed. You might think that business is a dirty world where nothing matters but money, but you'd be wrong. We have hearts. We have... feelings. And Apple wounded me. I feel betrayed -- bewildered. I just can't believe that Steve would call http://www.shopping.hp.com/webapp/shopping/computer_series.do?series_name=a1350y_series&catLevel=2&category=desktops/hp_pavilion&storeName=computer_store ugly. Or call Windows boring. I... I can't live like this...' and then he killed himself, because, like, it was too much for him to take that a competitor made a mocking comment about his company."

Oh, yeah -- FTFC (Fix the ***** Captcha) - zwilliams, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@ The Article:
Insinuating that Dell switched to AMD to spite Apple and Intel's partnership is outright retarded. Dell has for a long time been eyeing AMD. Not so long ago even lawsuits were brought up because of Intel's tactics for squishing the competition. With everyone watching Intel now, Intel can't quite get away with it anymore. Dell is taking advantage of the time to supply more of what people want.
@ jedijome:
Hate to break it to you but there are quite a few people that have better things to do with their time that waste it on gaming. I personally take my Mac as my primary device because I prefer to have features and functions that are years ahead of the Windows market. I have better things to do than kill time with some games. Comparatively between iLife and whatever software you can scrap together yeah PCs are pretty boring as it comes in terms of having a soul.
If I want to game I just go sit on the couch and play on any of the consoles I have.
@ jasqwerty:
That is hilarious. PowerPC is still a developing superscalar processor. I suggest you read some whitepapers on the technology before you make ignorant comments like that.
End of the flood of iPod profits? How dense can you be? Last quarter was Apple's strongest yet. 14 million iPods sold out of the 42 million. Even still iPod never really became their predominate money maker. Read some of their Financial reports for Gawd's sake.
@ Frosted:
"Apple abusive? Heavens, a company that charges $399 for an iPod, then the next year drops it and charges $399 for a Video iPod can't be bad."
Wow! Apple acts like every single company in the existance of time! Amazing! Guess what as time goes on, manufacturing becomes easier and cheaper and thus better products can be produced. Every friggin company on the face of the planet does this.
"Look at all the great things that came from Apple. The GUI.. no wait that was Xerox. Ok the 2 button mouse.. no wait, Xerox again, then Microsoft, and to this day most Mac mice don't have right click buttons."
A little development team in Xerox came up with the idea of the GUI but it was never going to be released. If you had done any research you would of obviously known Xerox at the time had no plans on producing products with the GUI for the public let alone a mouse. Apple came in, already with a GUI in development, read Applefolklore, saw what the little team had come up with and offered Xerox a great deal for it. In turn Apple got the goods and even most of the development staff.
Xerox may have come up with it first but it was far from being a complete solution for the public. Apple spent a lot of time refining the GUI before it was released. If not for that you Windows might of been using something similar to Windows 95 now. Apple popularized the GUI and the mouse.
Wow "Mac mice don't have right click buttons." nice of you to assert your personal preference on everyone like that. Because you know everyone has the exact same preference as you. Oh no wait, they don't. Mac OS has supported poly-button mice for over a decade now. Imagine that! Oh and even now Apple ships Macs with 4-5 button mice.
"Hmm.. the iSight was innovative, except for the fact that it was introduced at the same time that cheap bargain brand cams with similar performance were going for $20.00 everywhere you looked, and there were over 30 apps for Windows, free and shareware, and some pay, that let you video teleconference."
Nice way to get a lot wrong. At the time of iSight's introduction there was practically nil in Firewire cameras. You had to pay a lot more than $20 for something with iSight's capabilities. iSight came with one of the clearest picture qualities that still beats out a lot of webcams today. iSight could record at a full 30fps @ 640x480 (Millions of colors) with crystal clear quality. It also came with the dual element microphone. None of your $20 webcams can do that.
Thats nice that you had 30 apps or so, but how many of them were top quality? I doubt very many.
"The iPod, oh so innovative, or as I remember it, the portable transistor radio, then the Walkman, paved the way years before."
Yeah nice way to compare different devices.
1. Portable transistor radio - Could only listen to what other people broadcast.
2. Walkman (AM/FM) - Same as above. But with even more commercials and ads at the time.
3. Walkman (Tape) - Yeah who doesn't love carrying a bulk of tapes just for a few hours worth of music.
4. Walkman (CD) - 74 minutes per CD. Bulky if you wanted to listen to a variety of music instead of one album.
5. iPod (DAF) - Store thousands of songs, you can listen to your entire collection at your whim with no interference of ads.
"Candy colored computers that cost allot and don't run many apps, that seems to be the extent of Apple's innovations. Intel knows it's backing a loser."
Cost a lot in the short run but are far cheaper in the long run. Anyone ever tell you its Quality over Quantity. Apparently that hasn't sunken in. I'm sure somehow in your bizarrre logic its better to have a few hundred crappy spreadsheet programs rather than a handful of great ones.
Apple's innovation is making computers easier to use, require less maintenace, and offer better quality.
Yeah if Intel was backing a loser, which is that loser at the top of the news. Raking in cash and selling 14 million units every quarter.
@ terjon:
My iBook G3 (purchased back in 2002) gets 6 hours of life under casual use. With Wifi and Optical burning it drops down to 4 hours. The truth is, AMD may have the power but it doesn't have the battery life. Battery life is king when its mobile. Two hours of battery life is not very appealing when you can get a laptop that has 3 times the battery life. - ThankTheCheese, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0lol zwilliams

Apple may abuse its partner, but there's a lot of drunken, angry, abusive companies with low self-esteem out there. Some day we may all live in love and peace, but as long as its profit versus profit, bruises and broken bones will happen.
