- Arkonnan, on 10/12/2007, -8/+21> so putn a pos ***** mac into a super sweet subaru?
Funny, I was thinking the exact opposite, although not quite as elegantly as you put it. ;p - JCDenton513, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11There's a lot of information for those who are interested here. http://www.mp3car.com/
- negativefx, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11great site...i used it for all of my questions/install help.
i put a 7" lilliput touch + via epia m12k in my 350Z. the lilliput screen sucks ass and can't handle cold weather at all. Anyone out there who is considering doing something like this to their car: get a xenarc screen, don't go for the cheap-ass lilliput. It's worth the extra $100 to get the xenarc...it's much brighter and doesn't flake out in sub-40 degree weather.
Other than that, for under $1500, I have GPS, phone + internet, 60 gigs of mp3s, NES, SNES, etc. Can't get that with any other in-car piece of electronics. - handheldchimp, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10Actually it is useful, imagine your entire music or video library right there in your car for your enjoyment on a long 3-4 hour drive.
- cviebrock, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Well, then it likely wouldn't be handsfree.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tK8BpNwDH3w&eurl= - shank2001, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8You really must be insane. A Subaru WRX STI is faster/better handling than many "Supercar exotics" on the road. Can't get a much nicer car in terms of performance, especially for the price.
- osbjmg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5You can hear the boxer rumble, it wasn't an STi but a WRX, still a great car. The STi doesn't have a passthrough (until the '07 limited) and has a different interior. The interior is okay, nothing special, but I still love 'em!
Ugly subies unite! - dougm68, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I will NOT buy another car that doesn't have a mac mini standardly equipped.
Log it. - negativefx, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Lilliput displays suck ass. Go for the xenarc.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4"will it blend?" is the opening to a series of viral internet ads for a blender company... The guy always asks "Will It Blend?" and then procedes to blend something riduculous like a bag of marbles or a can of pop, just to show the power of the blender... check youtube..
- iching, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4The Lilliput 7" VGA Touchscreen definitely makes the whole thing work seamlessly, no mouse.
The list of materials and links is a huge plus. In a WRX none the less!
Dugg - Heiios, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4There are good DC to DC power supplies that determine when your car is off and will initiate the shutdown or sleep sequence for your computer, so it automatically turns off with your car and turns on with your car.
Opus is one of the brands that makes such a product - mfratt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4What if he is caught browsing porn while driving?
- madtiger, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I know a guy who did this with his Jeep:

I guess "pics or it didn't happen" finally ran out of steam. - CrudE, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3wrong story :p
- shank2001, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6Yeah but Jeeps suck, Subaru Rocks! Love my STI ;)
- morgrar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Not if he's got some handsfree setup ;)
- BryanJK, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1That's awesome. Mods are always fun, and usually pretty cool... I'de like to get ahold of a touch screen and make a cool mod or something like this in my room or something, with small speakers in the corners that work with it... now I'm in the mood to make some kind of mod. *dugg
- Heiios, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1You can, just get the right software and plug into your OBDII plug.
- ThatGeek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1there are a bunch of these on cnet DIY show us yours
http://reviews.cnet.com/4520-10895_7-6218703-1.html?tag=lnav
some pretty cool stuff on there too - viewtiful4ever, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I really thought about this... same car and everything... but too bad... kudos to that guy with the wrx... kudos to you...
- justhim, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1That install is using a front-end called "AMP". You can find more about it @ http://www.mp3car.com/vbulletin/forumdisplay.php?f=140
- bagelpirate, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2mp3car.com is a great resource for any carputer questions/information if you are looking to do a project yourself.
- rbowes, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1All that and it doesn't do any readouts from the cars internal computer?
- NeoPlatonist, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It runs off the battery so it wouldn't need the car to be on. Of course, if you leave it on while the car is off, you'll quickly have a dead battery.
- k3pler, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1http://carputer.org is a pretty decent wiki for stuff like this too..
- bilbus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Does it switch to batterys when the car turns off, then shut it self down?
kinda suck if it just crashed everythime the car was shut off .. or if you had to do it manualy - darkomen123, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I've been planning on putting a mac mini into my car for a while (would have done it awhile ago, but I don't have the car yet lol). But the end result looks sweet.
Nice Job. - osbjmg, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2@kevdotbadger - Why not? Maybe he love "him" STi? He may also love capitalization too - it's I, not i.
- fluffyturtle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I would buy a mini just for this, but only if the maps/directions were as good as what you can find in decks. I doubt it can match decks simply because these applications aren't meant for a computer since you won't be driving around with one.
Maybe some day :/ - b0nemachine, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Agreed!
- BigSlacker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yea, I've been tempted to do something like that It has nothing to do with Mac or a Prius though as all cars have that data available on the CAN bus. Part of it is required by law but almost everyone puts out a lot more for the benefit of their own diagnostics. The trick is it's not all standard so your decoder has to be manufacturer aware.
- jayrtfm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Mac in a Prius, now with realtime display of the CAN data including the PSD.
http://www.kusnetz.net/prius/ - dbalaski, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Okay -- I love the idea of Carputers... This guy did a nice job...
But I've seen tons of ones with FRONTROW enabled MACs in the car --
What I want to see someone come up with ne that utilizes a GPS and mapping software on the MAC
I have a friend who has done this with a PC and windows --- would be nice to see it done on a MAC
I wish I had the time to come up with one -- :( - audioscience, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Ok, yeah, that's pretty cool...
- megafrenzy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Lilliput with Transflective upgrade kicks A$$ over Xenarc.
- Konstantino, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This is really cool. I think I saw something similar to this on Apple's Mac Mini "ideas" page a while back. (The car was even a Suburu as well!)
- arachn1d, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0That's pretty cool :) I would want to do something like that, lol.
- moneyfink, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0go to mp3car.com, there are 1000's just like that. I have a PC in my car, 22,000 songs 60 movies, 500 tv episodes and dvd/cd
- JTorquido, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0http://www.duggmirror.com
- arjayl642, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0That's pretty cool. I'd never think of putting something like that in my car. It makes perfect sense...I can't really think of using Front Row other than that.
I would totally buy one if everything wasn't so expensive. That's the downfall of a Mac... - AcidBurn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is cool, but another guy did this to a VW a while back. There was a whole write up in Make Magazine. Very cool article with step-by-step instructions.
- fabiolover2002, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I have a windows set up in my Volvo, the only problem with the set up is that Lilliput screens (which both the install above and I have) are very susceptible to glare. To get a touchscreen without any glare it costs a pretty penny. Hence most carputer videos are filmed at night.
- BigSlacker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I think I'd rather do that using through the ignition switch rather than the power supply. From a user interface standpoint, it's sort of assumed that turning the key to on will override any shutdown function even if you don't start the engine.
- tianfan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0this is pretty crazy.. you know when i first see this video
- funtimes99, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1i would pay a good dime for that... and i dont drive :-)
- BigSlacker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Well, that depends on what you mean by quickly. If the computer is using 40 watts, and you have a 60 amp-hour battery, it will take 15 hours to drain the battery. Of course you'll probably not have enough juice to turn the starter a few hours before that.
- kevdotbadger, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1@shank2001 - i wouldn't go around sating you love you STI....
