- borninda818, on 10/12/2007, -13/+67Their earphones suck. Two weeks and they starting buzzing.
- Midnightbrewer, on 10/12/2007, -11/+64If "hard-to-duplicate" means "not a cheap piece of crap," I'm all for it. Apple's headphones are weak in sound and cheap in quality. They buzz within a week or so, and they fall apart within a month. Worst design ever. (Ooh, unless you include mice, in which case Apple's long history of poorly-designed mice wins.)
- iDealL, on 10/12/2007, -4/+55Hell if ANYBODY could hurry up and make wireless earbuds...
- Universal, on 10/12/2007, -3/+45Now if Apple could hurry up and make wireless earbuds...
- PsychoPNut, on 10/12/2007, -1/+37I agree... any will do.. but damn, I would lose those so fast.
- matija, on 10/12/2007, -3/+32Actually I already knew what was in them.. why? because they fell apart when they got yanked out of my ear...
- cambrown99, on 10/12/2007, -0/+29I've gone through at least 5 pairs. For some reason the right side always goes out on me. At least Apple will trade them out for free.
- mc4_a, on 10/12/2007, -1/+29All I know is they're the worst earbuds I've ever used. If you listen to anything with even a hint of bass you will blow them.
- aahpandasrun, on 10/12/2007, -1/+261) Earbuds give the worst sound quality out of any type of headphones
2) Apple's earbuds are far from unique. Sony makes a nearly identical pair that comes with their PSP
Best quote of the article: "Super interesting? Not really" - MikeCerm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+24Who cares about the buzzing? The real problem is the horrible sound quality. I mean, these are no better than any other $3 earbuds packaged with any other MP3 player. Actually, iRiver and a few other brands give you Sennheiser MX300s which are far better than these, but I still don't see why you'd spend $150-300 on a player, and use $3 earbuds.
For good, but affordable in-ear phones, the sub-$50 Sennheiser CX300s are great. They're far better than the comparably priced Sony buds, and even the Shure E2s which cost twice as much, and they're also now available in white, so they'll match your iPod.
The whole "white earbud" thing has become a status symbol. To many, it means, "I'm listening to an iPod, so I must be cool." When I see someone with white earbuds, I think, "There's a person who's asking to be robbed, and who obviously doesn't care about sound quality. - OmegaNine, on 10/12/2007, -1/+23OMFG, you are kidding me, its a speaker!
And yeah, it would be nice, but what are you going to do for a battery? You would get like 10 mins of battery life from each ear bud :oP - oslointhesummer, on 10/12/2007, -2/+19Ew. Ear Sweat.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+18good thing I use Shure E2cs
- zweben, on 10/12/2007, -1/+17I'm not a fan of having to replace my newly blown out iPod earbuds evey week.
They make in-ear headphones that have excellent sound quality. Shure E2c's are a great place to start. They beat the crap out of any earbuds. - EsotericBoredom, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13Why the F@#% do people insist on using $2 headphones with a $300 mp3 player?
- emorphien, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14Digg is getting really bad with this apple crap.
They are headphones. They are designed like pretty much every other ear-bud. They probalby even buy the headphones from Koss, Sony, or someone. It's not in their interest to make their own. iRiver uses Sennheiser earbuds, and others buy from other manufacturers. Other earbuds are better than the Apple ones, and pretty much every other type of headphone is better than the earbud (in ear canal-phones and open or closed over the ear type headphones for those confused, and there are more styles) not just in sound quality, but in many cases in blocking external sounds and preventing excessive hearing loss. - mc4_a, on 10/12/2007, -5/+17I'm just not a fan of walking down the street with huge headphones on my head.
- LMN8R, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14What's inside your ears? Crappy ass earbuds that create an entire generation of people who don't know what "good sound quality" means, and are thus satisfied with 128kbps lossy music at $1/pop.
- thewordwasgod, on 10/12/2007, -20/+31who cares? ....so they are designed like pretty much EVERY OTHER PAIR of earbuds out there. surprise.
it is too bad that ***** like this gets 'dugg'. grow up children. - zakool21, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11The stock apple earbuds are crap. Like a person said on the article page, take apart a decent set of earbuds like some SHUREs. *Those* are great earbuds!
- NightRush, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11So you have never left the house?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10a little better design http://www.ultimateears.com/
- designbydave, on 10/12/2007, -5/+14this makes the ***** home page? ***** lame
- NightRush, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11Not all earbuds have earclips on them. My Audio Technica buds sound much better than those apple things, Not to mention they sound like new, and there over a year old.
- Malakin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9I bought a pair of Sennheiser MX550's for $20CAD (about $18USD) that sound a lot better than the crappy earbuds that came with my iPod.
- sencha5, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11Dude, there's an easy fix to that. Kinda gross, but here goes: Take the earbud, and put the mesh part in your mouth, lightly create a vacuum. There's a tiny driver in there, and because it's on wax paper or plastic, it'll get displaced. My earbuds are completely shot and are hanging on by the exposed wire at the jack, but the sound is still decent because of that. Use too much pressure and you ripped the plastic though, so be careful.
- zweben, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12I've gone through so many that i've taken two pairs apart already so this article was pretty boring to me.
Earbuds suck. - emorphien, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9I gave it the lame treatment.
- evilspoons, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8These look EXACTLY like the interior of some cheapass Sony earbuds I took apart because they stopped working after I got them wet. Big deal.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Well you obviously haven't tried many earbuds then. The apples ones are fine, but nowhere near the sound quality ofthe good buds you can buy seperatley (and at large expense) from companies like Etymotic.
- mateo60, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Shure in-ears are some of the best headphones out there. I couldn't imagine using my iPod with the stock earphones........ anyone want mine? :P
- monkeybutler, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Its amazing that anything with "Apple" in it gets front page. Would this even get any digs if this were a plain old 1994 sony earbud?
- PsychoPNut, on 10/12/2007, -4/+11Geeks don't work out.
- NightRush, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8@mc4
You dont need Huge headphones to have good sound quality. All you need is to shut off your iPods EQ, and use good earbuds. (NOT pack-ins) - LucasVB, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7WOW! The Apple iPod earbuds, when opened, look exactly like... EVERY OTHER standard earbud!!!
Why the ***** is this in the front page, people. Why the *****... - MikeCerm, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Yeah, because you have to turn the volume all the way up to hear any bass at all out of these pieces of junk. If you like bass, use canal-phones, not earbuds, as they actually reproduce bass and block out outside sound.
If you have to turn your iPod up past halfway, you either have horrible hearing, or horrible headphones. If you're using the phones that came with your iPod, you probably have both. - kell, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6they look like the usual ear-buds in your nearest candy store.
- Macc, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Come on now, this is a pretty lame article.
- bitcloud, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Looks to me like some guy broke his earphones and took some photos of them.
I can't even begin to imagine why this would be interesting for *anyone*
I'm gonna take apart an "apple - caps lock key" and wait for the digg front page... - MikeCerm, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Even the Sony earbuds that you can find everywhere sound better that the iPhones (but worse than comparably priced earbuds or headphones from real companies like Sennheiser or Audio-Technica)
- CornStarch, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5"Earbuds suck"
QFT
For the price to performance ratio you can never find earprobes that are better than cans. I got a pair of these: http://www.zone23.info/Electric/AT/ATH-FC7.jpg (ATH FC7)
And they sound better than any earprobes under $90 and still look stylish. They sound like my creative 2.1 system on my head.
$50 BTW - MetalGod, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8I've had 3 iPods in the past and have have never had any problems. What are you guys doing to your earbuds?
- tsupersonic, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8They are bad headphones, but through their support website, I got 5 pairs of headphones and 4 USB cables, and I never had to return the "defective" product back. Great support, bad headhpones.
The color white has gotten so popular for headphones. I see people wearing wannabe iPod headphones. - Xiol, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I agree.
I paid £17 for some Sennheiser MX500s (Argos, if you're in the UK and interested) and they have to be the best pair of earphones I've ever owned (and I've been through a few!). - crbaker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4This is why digg kind of sucks, it's to popular, there for crap like this gets dug.
- MikeCerm, on 10/12/2007, -5/+9Wireless earbuds would be bigger and heavier than anyone would tolerate, because they'd need batteries that you'd either have to be constantly charging or replacing. They would also sound like *****, like the iPod headphones already do.
They could do a headset. There'd be room in there for batteries, but then they'd be large, and wouldn't look that cool, and they'd still sound like *****. They'd have to use Bluetooth, and while it's OK for phone calls, it's really not OK for high quality sound. The iPod would have to decode the audio (particularly if purchased from iTMS) and then it would be re-encoded for the Bluetooth transfer. Using A2DP, they could do the decoding right in the headset, but Apple certainly wouldn't give up the keys to FairPlay, and the crappy DAC in the headset would make the iPod's Wolfson DAC sound like an freakin' Apogee. - Spiff05, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5How are these hard to duplicate, there is absolutely nothing that makes these different than any other earbud headphone. Stop putting ***** like this on the front page.
- EsotericBoredom, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4The Koss Spark-plugs are a very good deal at the price point. Less then $20 for ear plug style headphones and they don't have the problems that the more expensive Sony ones do
- elliotm01, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4If you really cared about sound quality, would you have bought an iPod in the first place?
Yes, yes. Quality perception is subjective, yadda, yadda...
But really, anyone who knows anything about headphones knows packaged phones/buds are more oft than not cheap toss-ins.
Creative Zen Vision M / Ultimate Ears super.fi5Pro combo, FTW!
Buried. - SoundScape, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4How the ***** did this even make front page? 3 Pictures? This is the whole reason for the Bury: Lame option.
Whose gonna give me my 2 minutes back? lionbear? Please... -
