- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -4/+66APPLE: Thank you for calling Apple. My name is Gary. Could I have your first name please?
CALLER: Hi, Gary. My name is Anthony, and my last name is Smith.
APPLE: Okay. And how may I assist or direct your call?
ANTHONY: Okay, well you guys give support for OS X, right?
APPLE: Yup.
ANTHONY: Okay, when I turn on my machine, it goes to the little Apple logo thing and it gets to this screen and it says I can restart my computer -- and it says that in about 5 or 6 different languages.
APPLE: Okay. What type of computer are you using?
ANTHONY: It is a Compaq Presario.
APPLE: Okay. And you're using Mac OS X?
ANTHONY: Yes.
APPLE: Alright, just one moment, and I'll transfer you over.
ANTHONY: Thank you.
[Hold music]
APPLE: Thank you for calling Apple. This is Billy. Can I get your full name please?
ANTHONY: Hi, Billy. My name is Anthony Smith.
APPLE: Thanks, Mr. Smith. And are you calling in about a new issue or is there a previous case here?
ANTHONY: This is a new issue.
APPLE: New issue? Okay. Do you have the serial number for the product that you're calling about?
ANTHONY: I believe so, let me see... yes, it is [serial number]
[Apple confirms serial number with Anthony]
APPLE: Thank you, sir. One moment.
APPLE: Let me go ahead and read this back to you one more time, because it's coming back as invalid. That's [serial]?
ANTHONY: That is correct.
APPLE: Huh.... That's [serial]?
ANTHONY: Yes sir.
APPLE: Ah.... Okay, are you getting this from the "My Info", sir?
ANTHONY: No, I believe it was on the package that the computer came in. I can't get the computer to boot, so I can't get to any info screen.
APPLE: Ah, okay. What type of computer are you using?
ANTHONY: It is a Compaq Presario.
APPLE: Okay. Okay --
ANTHONY: It is a funny thing, I'd say -- turn it on and it boots up and it gets to the little Apple screen and the little spinny thing. It looks like it's loading and all of a sudden, you get like a "Start" curtain that drops down and it says I need to restart my computer, and it says that in about 5 or 6 different languages.
APPLE: Uh-huh. Again, what type of computer are you using, sir?
ANTHONY: It's a Compaq Presario.
APPLE: Compaq Presario, like a Windows PC?
ANTHONY: Yes.
APPLE: Okay, and -- okay, so you know you called -- this is AppleCare, right, sir?
ANTHONY: Yes. I was told I can get support for OS X here. That's why I'm calling.
APPLE: Ah. Okay, how are you running OS X on a Compaq Presario, sir?
ANTHONY: Well, it's pretty simple, I mean -- it's pretty straightforward. You just put the CD in and it installs, you know? It's pretty much just like installing Windows, you know? You just put the CD in, it boots, the installer pops up, you go through it....
APPLE: Okay. Yeah, because -- yeah, in regards to this, we can't support -- I can't give you support or advice in connecting OS X into your Compaq Presario, sir.
ANTHONY: Okay.
APPLE: Yeah, it doesn't really cover our scope of support.
ANTHONY: Okay, well thanks anyways, then.
APPLE: Okay, then.
ANTHONY: You have a nice day.
APPLE: You too. Bye. - PRocker267, on 10/10/2007, -9/+64I can expect a letter from apple in a matter of days now :P

I'd be a little concerned whether it's legal to publicly divulge a recorded phone conversation without the permission of both parties. - colincornaby, on 11/08/2007, -5/+51This is about as cool as someone calling Nintendo for support on their Nintendo emulator.
In other words, it's not really all that cool. - benitojuarez, on 10/10/2007, -1/+41Your friend should hang himself for buying an alienware machine. Those things are more overpriced than a mac.
- wvstephens, on 10/10/2007, -3/+27Hmmm my OS X boots up just fine on my Intel Dual Core Desktop, and hey I just noticed it is not an apple product either. Maybe I need to start up my own Hackintosh customer support line.
- fpcyber, on 10/10/2007, -2/+26Way to copy a comment from the forum. Original!
- JabbaDuhHut, on 10/10/2007, -6/+28Thank you for keeping the rest of us on hold longer while you eff around, asshat.
- neodorian, on 10/10/2007, -1/+22It's when you install a slightly tweaked version of OSX on your non-Apple-branded PC. Since Apple PCs and other PCs are 99% the same hardware it's not too difficult and you can spare yourself the cost of Apple's hardware if the form factor isn't important to you and you just want the OS.
- shableep, on 10/10/2007, -0/+19not as entertaining as i thought it could be.
i think it would've been some good entertainment if you played as an idiot that was absolutely SURE that Compaqs came with OS X. demanding support even when they say no. telling them that you just bought the computer, and all you want to do is browse Myspace, but you get some stupid error that thinks you speak 5 ***** languages. and you could then say something belligerent like,
"I'm an American, I speak ***** American."
give it a shot. - kylere, on 10/10/2007, -1/+19Up next, our hero goes to McDonalds and uses his amazing wit and leet skillz to ask for a Whopper, and as a followup he will head to Burger King and order a Big Mac. Buried for meh, wasted time.
- nunzi, on 10/10/2007, -2/+17that was the most boring waste of 6 minutes i've spent this year.
oooh, look at me, i put a honda engine in my nissan and when i called honda they didn't know what was wrong with my nissan. surprise! - manicallday, on 10/10/2007, -1/+14The recording disclaimer that's typically given at the beginning of most service calls usually works both ways.
- timeshifter, on 10/10/2007, -3/+16THIS IS TOTALLY ***** STUPID. I WASTED 10 MINUTES DOWNLOADING AND LISTENING TO THIS!
Summary: I need support for OS X... on a Compaq Presario... sorry sir, we can't help you.
LAME. - pbaehr, on 10/10/2007, -7/+18Ohhhh...Suzuka from the FORUMS...
I had you confused with Suzuka from the Starbucks down the street. - fkr3, on 10/10/2007, -1/+11At least it's not a voodoopc... those things are more overpriced then the bastard love child of a Mac / Alienware.
- RonPaulsiPhone, on 10/10/2007, -6/+14An Apple computer at a fair price.
- streak, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8Just avoid the Apple memory upgrades and you'll be ok. Almost every computer in their line-up can have its memory upgraded with third party memory for much less $$ without voiding the warranty.
- fpcyber, on 10/10/2007, -1/+9Not worth it. Trust me.
- qualish, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8Or maybe it was just his gay lisp?
- billyballer, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7Buried due to wasting my time. Call wasn't funny or interesting. Caller says can you help me with something you dont support, and apple rep says we can't support it. Totally boring.
- Vermifax, on 10/10/2007, -8/+15In other words, Apple's entire hardware line-up.
- mrfreeziexp, on 10/10/2007, -5/+11What do you mean you? You're not PRocke.. HOLY CRAP YOU'RE THE GUY! You're, like, famous or somethin'.
- chrisinsocalif, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7I feel sorry for customer support for computer issues. They have to help some people who have no idea how to work a computer. They must have a lot of patience.
- sp1keNARF, on 10/10/2007, -2/+8wow, that was pretty underwhelming... oh, presario you say? can't help you, bye. zzzz
- krakelohm, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7I think this depends on location, here in Alaska all it takes is one of the parties to know.
- PARAPA, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6This is the internet. What is ever legal on here?
- fpcyber, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6You were buried as soon as I saw your post.
- PRocker267, on 10/10/2007, -5/+11Does it really matter? Its not like im trying out for American Idol :P
- marcz, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Thanks for the transcript. Much appreciated.
- andykram, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6Wow, did anyone else hear the excess amounts of malice used in combination with "Compaq Presario"?
- j.carcinogen, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5http://www.demonoid.com/files/details/1197638/7132224/
- neodorian, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5That is true, but when you think about it, most modern desktop PCs are very similar but in different cases. You won't find much difference between a Dell or and Apple or an Alienware or a homebuilt box except for form factor and how much you want to put into parts. They've all got essentially the same architecture these days with a few exceptions for Apple to keep the OS and the hardware tied together.
- fLUx1337, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5OK, that was pointless....
It was good, but I was hoping they would really help him, or something, but in the end they just said "we cant help you with that sir" lol - nhprm, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Just like its a Ford's Taurus? or a Mercury's Sable?
- AndrewJC, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Um... Don't all customer service calls state clearly at the beginning: "This call may be recorded for quality and training purposes"? That's not only an advisement that THEY might do it, it is also permission for YOU to do it.
- bedouin, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4That was very uneventful. Buried as lame.
- Bob042, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5How was it bad? Was the rep actually supposed to try and tell him how to run OSX86? Not likely...
- CalmLlama, on 10/10/2007, -2/+6Try asking who supports OS X next time. Ask to speak to a supervisor or manager, if they say they don't support it then ask who does support it.
- rarun98, on 10/10/2007, -10/+14What's a Hackintosh?
- fpcyber, on 10/10/2007, -2/+6Could have just told him that on the forums, oh wait you did. Digg down begins.
- mrrish, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5Nothing terribly special here, we are well aware that OS X 10 installs on Intels (and even AMDs) now. Apple's software success is due to the fact it is installed on its own custom hardware, that's why they won't support PC hardware. He got the response he probably expected.
Not worth 7 minutes and 4 seconds of your time. - shinaku, on 10/10/2007, -2/+510 minutes to download that? Sucks to be you
- rajid, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Waste of Apple Supports time and a waste of my time listening to this crap. Buried.
- jesstech, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Apple has the greatest hold music. You don't even hear Guster on the radio anymore!
- NSResponder, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Hey, it might be funny now, but anybody using Macs in their business would think twice about hiring someone stupid enough to call a company and tell them he's violating their copyrights.
-jcr - manitoba98xp, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3@kb9vgr
Exactly. From the OS X EULA, Section 2A: "This License allows you to install, use and run one (1) copy of the Apple Software on a single Apple-labeled computer at a time. You agree not to install, use or run the Apple Software on any non-Apple-labeled computer, or to enable others to do so."
http://images.apple.com/legal/sla/docs/macosx1044.pdf - DougGames, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3I created an account just so i could digg this article down for posting a link to a PASSWORD PROTECTED F-ING DOWNLOAD and not providing the god damned password.
- wellyuk, on 10/10/2007, -3/+6he sounds like someone who's never been laid
- gwinerreniwg, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4Again, I point out that the statement says "Your call may be monitored or recorded for quality assurance purposes". This could reasonably be seen as a response to the rhetorical question: "May I record this conversation?" Therefore, the ambiguity of this statement could easily be argued both ways, and could reasonably be interpreted as giving the caller permission to record the conversation. I suspect no one ever had reason to sue your prior employers over this, which is why they want to do the quick cut and dump when they know the call is being recorded: Not because it's illegal to tape, but because they realize it IS legal to tape, and don't want to give a potential plaintiff any evidence they don't control.
