- Pharaoh777, on 10/12/2007, -11/+69Someone in a Mac ad uses a Mac? No... couldn't be!
- MacParrot, on 10/12/2007, -6/+54Very funny guy. Even if he does portray a PC. Just a part in a commercial guys. Don't take it so seriously.
Want to be offended? Just remember the Dell Dude. - MattLat, on 10/12/2007, -4/+43John Hodgman, you're my new hero.
Dancing midget, you've been replaced!!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gx-NLPH8JeM - benlundquist, on 10/12/2007, -8/+47Everybody knows that PC secretly loves Mac. Isn't that the point of the commercials?
- pierrefilms, on 10/12/2007, -2/+24If you read the article you'll notice that he said he's been a Mac user since 1984. Sure, maybe they did give him one free for doing the ads, but it definitely wasn't his first and it wasn't what made him switch...in fact, he didn't switch..he started with it.
- invader, on 10/12/2007, -6/+23wow... so some people actually think that he in some way represents a PC? he was chosen by apple and paid by apple.. i would be astonished if he used a PC.. get over it.
now if gates, ballmer, or even the dell "dude" used a mac at home as a primary computer, that would be news.. this? no. - rockintom99, on 10/12/2007, -21/+38Since when are PCs arrogant? I always found the Apple to sound like totally arrogant *****.
Mac: "Yeah, i'm a Mac. I like to do fun things, like make photobooks and websites"
PC: "Yeah, i just do boring spreadsheets and things"
...Games, anyone? - dougieb, on 10/12/2007, -9/+25Plus IT'S AN APPLE COMMERCIAL! of course he uses a Mac. In fact, they probably gave it to him for free.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+17First of all, celebrity endorsements are as fake as any other endorsement. Second, it isn't really an endorsement, if you aren't familiar with John Hodgman from The Daily Show, he is very sarcastic.
- mywhitenoise, on 10/12/2007, -4/+15No he didn't you dumbass. He said he never owned a computer, until the ads. He now has a Mac.
- Takteek, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12It's actually called the Daily Show, and John Hodgman is one of the correspondents for it, so he is on there a lot.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+13Guys, there's no point to get all worked up. It's a cute bit of trivia and a really fun interview. Calm down, crack a smile and add a digg or whatever.
- MacParrot, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10Well, I'm glad that's straightened out. Guess we can all go home now right?
- ChronicColonic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7The Dell Dude was sparking up...just like Dell's batteries.
- cyberdork, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7To split more hairs: he's not a correspondent, he's their 'Resident Expert', on basically anything.
- DaffyDuck, on 10/12/2007, -9/+16"Mac: "Yeah, i'm a Mac. I like to do fun things, like make photobooks and websites""
So this is arrogant to you? Maybe you need to desensitize a bit? - hangtown, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I sense a person who cannot comprehend letters set in a specific sequence to convey meaning. He specifically stated he started using macs with the original one in 1984.
- Vermifax, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8We have five Macs and one HP. Would you like buy the HP? We don't need it anymore.
- boryalic, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8All of your comments appreciated. I just thought people might like the article.
- archivist, on 10/12/2007, -10/+14of course he owns a mac, he's john hodgman!
- hangtown, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Why can't PC idiots comprehend that it's not a MAC? MAC = media access control, or a cosmetics line, or a fashion label, or a merchant aircraft carrier, or a magnetic accelerator canon, or any number of other things, but it does NOT equal a Mac.
- MacParrot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3hangtown,
Because the ones that do it on purpose get a hard on every time someone tries to correct them on it. Ignore it, they won't change and it isn't worth the time to debate morons. - samcrut, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5This is trivial even beneath being trivia.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Actually, that is a bad example. This would be like if we found out that John Madden DID use Tinactin. Or if any actor used the product that they push on TV.
The guy is an actor in an APPLE COMMERCIAL!
Guess what! Chances are someone drinking a Pepsi in a Coke commercial actually drinks COKE! - mattsparkes, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3His comments about hometowns is wonderful.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I am keeping an eye out for both of these guys, if I see them, on the street am going to boot them up side their heads!
- tpodr, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I loved the article because I like John Hodgman. Forget the whole Mac/PC angle and enjoy pronouncements like:
"Home towns are like opinions: everyone has one. And I guess in that sense, they’re also like *****."
and, speaking of the underground mole-men civilization,
"No, no. I’m just reading history. And by reading, I mean making it up." - techweenie1, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3The way PCs are talked about most places it seems they have become synonymous with a machine that eats, sleeps, and thinks in Microsoft Windows 24/7...then again it is probably do to the higher market share...but I'd agree PC is too broad of a term to describe a machine that only runs Windows, but that's how the world has come to recognize it these days.
- goat77, on 10/12/2007, -8/+10Well there are always *****, but who constantly launches entire ad-campaigns mocking the other platform?
- tpodr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2And by expert, he means he just making it up.
- glev2005, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Actually, if you're so interested in semantics (and i am a Semite who enjoys semantics) PC, meaning personal computer, is a trademarked phrase of IBM and only truly refers to IBM personal computers. a Dell, a Gateway, an HP etc..are actually PC clones, or desktop computers or what have you.
- uownedge, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1First of all...Macs can do nearly all of the same things PCs can. Office work? In case you haven't noticed, Microsoft still produces software for OS X (Office, etc).
There are a small handful of current games that have yet to be released for OS X...that's about it.
It's fine if you don't personally care for Apple or their products, but get the facts right before you go spreading false information. The same goes for Apple fans who dis Windows. It's all good fun most of the time, but you have to tell it like it is and be honest. Otherwise you just sound like an idiot.
Second, while Ballmer does not use a Mac, Bill Gates does. He has one on his desk at work no less. Believe it or not, he's actually a relatively open-minded and very intelligent individual. While I don't personally agree with all of the business tactics he's used over the years, you've got to give him credit for those two things (as well as many others -- despite popular believe, he's not evil!). - marioluigi123, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I thought it was amusing how there was a "continued below..." hyperlink and all it did was shimmy you past the small ad.
- Aggronaut, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1NEWSFLASH!!!!!.................I USE A PC!!!!! WOW....now any PC users (if there are any out there) you dont have to feel alone anymore.
- foxsynergy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@inkswamp
So, by your own definition, an Apple-manufactured computer running Linux is nothing? O_o - nmaster64, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1My mistake. My apologies for mis-remembering something so trivial from months ago. Thanks for the correction, but learn some netiquette you asswipe...
- TheBigBrother, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5He was just on the today show:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JYcytzbG8Ag
Funny guy - Kirsha, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@inkswamp
it may be consistent with itself, but not with the rest of the ads. - MasterDwarf, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I can't believe I read half of that article. Snoozer.
- PrivatePancakes, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1FINNALLY! Somebody else knows the secret of the mole men... >> > *jumps behind a couch*
- MacParrot, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Elric,
Even as a Mac guy since the eighties I have to say that isn't true, There are plenty of people who prefer PCs. They like Windows for other reasons than games or never having tried a Mac. There's plenty of room for all three major platforms (Linux. Mac, Windows). - bightchee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1oooooh.... so he is the guy with whom Jonathan Coulton tours.
- mywhitenoise, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5'"If PCs had OSX, I'd get a PC."
Oh, but they do.'
No they don't. The x86 project isn't a true OSX. Can you even upgrade the latest updates? I hear you can't even use iLife in it. Forget that. - foxsynergy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Have you ever heard of "uShut"? :-P
- twoleftfeet, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Check out these weird illustrations of all 700+ hobo names from Hodgman's book: http://e-hobo.com/
- boryalic, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Wow many comments on my post. Just to set the record straight I was not amazed by the fact he uses a mac, he's in the ad. I am not a flag waving mac user although i prefer them. I just thought this was an interesting read because its the actor from the ad we have all seen 10,000 times not including parodies so just chill out no need to get so uptight.
- cyberdork, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Ah, finally someone who knows more about John Hodgman than just the commericals.
Here is some more:
His book: http://www.amazon.com/Areas-My-Expertise-John-Hodgman/dp/1594482225/
His blog: http://areasofmyexpertise.blogspot.com/
His 'Little Gray Books Lectures' podcasts:
http://www.littlegraybooks.com/hear.html
Enjoy! - inkswamp, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4You really have a hard time figuring this out or are you being intentionally obtuse to make some other point I'm not getting? The commercials are putting Apple's platform up against the Windows PC platform. It's not company vs. company.
Macs = Apple hardware + OS X
PC = non-Apple hardware + Windows
I can't believe I just had to explain that. - Crackshot, on 10/12/2007, -8/+8@ goat77
Gotta disagree with the old psychoanalysis there Freud, blaming one side entirely for any dispute shows a serious lack of insight. There are great folks as well as ***** on both sides. - PaulieCoconuts, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Alex!
He mentions a "Chupacabra-type beast that they found up in Maine" at the end of page 1.
The Chupacabra may be closer than you think.. (ok, it's East Coast, but still the same continent.) -
