I'm not sure why, but I just got an image of Steve Jobs walking from the shadows, taking the iPhone, and walking back into the shadows. lol. - brocklese, on 10/12/2007, -13/+45iWings
- Broman, on 10/12/2007, -11/+42Steve Jobs doesn't walk...
...he flies. - WiZZLa, on 10/12/2007, -3/+31Either the iPhone has reduced in size or someone has giant hands: http://www.flickr.com/photo_zoom.gne?id=436408761&context=set-72157600028391740&size=o
- ajmoo, on 10/12/2007, -9/+36Steve Jobs is kind of like Chuck Norris. Be careful of what you say about him, or he'll come from the shadows and take ur iPhonez.
- 1jaxstate1, on 10/12/2007, -4/+23I think Apple need to get a hold of all the hype. The press is good, but they now have people thinking this phone is the end all to be all, which it is not. When it's released, I think there will be some backlash for not living up to the hype. I want one, but *****, I'm tried of hearing about it.
- stuartjmoore, on 10/12/2007, -2/+19It's no wider than an iPod. Although I think he has giant hands.
And that's the background, not finger prints - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -10/+24yawn...
- wageslaven, on 10/12/2007, -7/+16I'll add a meh to that.
- turpenine, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10giant hands? you know what that means girls.
anyways, it is the same size as an ipod video, which isn't too big. - Vermifax, on 10/12/2007, -6/+11A: Everyone who either Dugg the article and/or posted a comment on it.
- johnpaul191, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5you know how many websites are dedicated to cell phones and even rumors? there is a surprising amount of techie interest in cell phones, then mash that with Apple fans and you have this chaos.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -5/+9OH NOES!!!111
- uownedge, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Well, for some, this is going to be the best phone on the market when it is available. It just depends on what you want out of a phone/pda. I don't know about backlash so much, but I think that some people, particularly those who like to exaggerate the facts they do have, and make up facts that either are incorrect, or completely untrue, may be disappointed. The iPhone will be great because it will do what it's designed to do, and it will do it well. It's a somewhat unique product, and a combination of some new, and some old technologies to Apple, and I believe that's where a lot of the hype is coming from.
I'd stopped by the Apple store the other night, and was talking to one of the reps about that. They've had a *ton* of people asking about the iPhone -- when will they be on display, when can they be bought, etc. A lot of people weren't looking to switch providers and phones just yet, but just wanted to see the device in person.
Regardless of the hype, I'm glad to see Apple expanding their product lines, and pushing their capabilities. It's nice to see something new coming into the market. As far as smartphones/PDA phones, all we've had recently are the Blackberries and WM devices, which, IMO, could be much better than they are. Maybe this will give the other device makers the incentive they need to come out with some better products. - etandrib, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Read the product page. http://www.apple.com/iphone/technology/specs.html
- thecompkid, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4The question is posed...who exactly is being insulted?
- ApplesCEO, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@ryanissuper
Hmm, OK, I will take your eldest child, $500, and your both your thumbs. - dimplemonkey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I really wish there was a way Apple could have implemented that technology where you can lay your electronic device and it just recharges wirelessly. That way, I don't have to worry about battery life at all. I know it's out there now...
- kenok, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Mobile phones/Smart phones are the most accessible gadgetry that everyone could lay their grubby hands down and fingerprint it to oblivion. With all these 5 mega pixel cameras, dvd quality recording and blah... No doubt people will get into it.
It's a good thing the iPhone in Asia will be appearing late 2007. Apple should've ironed the kinks out by then and added 3G capabilities. Can't justify the price w/o 3G. - johnpaul191, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2i thought the iPhone was slightly wider, and thinner than the full sized big iPod w/video? anyway, it does not look too big in this, though it will be hard to tell till they are in stores.
one of the major factors holding me back from a Treo has been the physical size of the thing. i'm an OS X user and i want something i could sync contacts/calendar with my desktop on a regular basis. that limits my choices of smartphone in a big way. - FunkyWitDaSysTm, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Steve Jobs = eChuck Norris?
or is it
Steve Jobs + iPhone = eChuck Norris? - Zminus10, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1DUGG for the shadow man in blue jeans!
- darkspire, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Those may not be fingerprints on the screen that we are seeing due to the background or reflection or whatever. There are clearly fingerprints/smudges on the bottom portion of the phone. That's the way all of apples high gloss parts are so you would have to expect that going in. I'm more concerned about the longevity of the touch screen. Having had to maintain touch screens in a corporate environment I've found that the most commonly used areas of the screen tend to become unusable in less than a year due to the oils on the hands of the users wearing the screen down and making the information behind it unreadable. I've even seen this on some Nintendo DS's and many many PDA's.
- uownedge, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2@nofxjunkee,
Although I'm still on the edge about your particular gripe in this case (I can't imagine Apple would release a final product -- one that one uses with their hands -- that would be so prone to finger prints. Here's hoping that, it's not the case, although I agree that it's possible).
I do however, agree with you 100% on the fact that many people who choose Apple products (this happens with Microsoft products too) get grouped in with the "fanboy" types that don't know what they're talking about.
It's frustrating, but unfortunately, I wouldn't count on a change any time soon. - johnpaul191, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1there have been patents for it, even Apple has some. the fact that nobody is using it for cell phones, PDAs etc makes me think it's not ready for mass rollout yet.
- superkendall, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Exactly, to sign up you have to tell Cingular you exist and submit an email address. Who generally does that for a phone? It indicates there is even a larger interest beyond that initial amount, with people that would like more information but do not want to be on a mailing list.
I don't think all those million will buy either. But what if it's even just half? That's still 500k phones, a hefty number any way you slice it.
It does go to show there are a lot of people interested in the phone, something that some anti-Apple people claim is not the case. People know what the phone costs and know the service plan deal, yet there are still a million people on this list. - superkendall, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3Note that one MILLION people have signed up with Cingular (Sorry, AT&T) to be notified when the phone is released. A lot of people seemed to think Apple couldn't sell 100k in a year.
- lensman00, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2"I held it one time in a Cingular board meeting" - AT&T Inc. Chief Operating Officer Randall Stephenson
I'm not sure whether to be pleased or dismayed that someone this geeky is one of the top execs at such a huge company. He sounds like a Trekkie who got to handle an original phaser. - srodolff, on 10/12/2007, -8/+8The question that begs to be asked.
WHO CARES!?!?!?!?! - DarkMeld, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2The iPhone made an appearance at the show. In other less important news, a Chubacabra was spotted in the home of a New Jersey family today.
- stuartjmoore, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1@nofxjunkee (number?)
uh.... it's a reflection of a reflection of the background!
OK, you got me, but I'm not too worried about fingerprints on mine. Every iPod I've seen is scratched to hell. Except mine. If you care enough*, you won't have much of a problem.
*that's semi-OCD talking, not apple fanboyism. - SyDIGG, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2And how many millions have not signed up but is interested and will buy the iPhone? The argument can go both ways.
- flag564, on 10/12/2007, -5/+4So?
How many of those "MILLION" will actually end up buying one? How many are just apple fanatics that just wanted to sign up for something because it said iPhone? - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Iphone is a pda phone that is PD-Aless.
Its closed system, and that means Im through with iPhone. - specialshadow, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Ok, heres the deal, i would love to get my gruby hands on this new gadget when it comes out, but i have 2 reasons for not doing so. 1. It is the first of its kind and is more than likely to have some flaws, whether the phone itself or the software (doubt it). 2. Its not going to be carried by my service provider, but hopefully Apple opens their eyes and allows other providers to carry it. (although, they are Apple because they didn't go mainstream)
- geekee, on 10/12/2007, -8/+6I think it's funny how Digg readers criticize the media for reporting on celebrities like Anna Nicole Smith. And yet Digg users seem to think any news about the iPhone is the most important news of the day. Shame on you Yahoo for reporting trivial news and dumbing down America and the rest of the world.
- BLACKEAGLE, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2wow a iphone why should i really even care, its a freaking phone!
- directive0, on 10/12/2007, -9/+6Oh...an iPhone... "neat". Funny how these articles bring out the most devoted pro-apple losers and the most rabid anti-apple losers. I don't know who I feel sorrier for. One things for sure, its all business as usual on the internet.
- ApplesCEO, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1No, actually, I teleport.
- sequethin, on 10/12/2007, -6/+3I just want to know how long the battery will last if I'm talking and listening to mp3's and adding events to my calendar and....
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -6/+2Yeah . .and Chuck Norris showed him howto
- utstewman21, on 10/12/2007, -8/+3its apple week at my college (SMU) so hopefully they will whip the iPhone out later this week. doubt it, though.
- nofxjunkee, on 10/12/2007, -8/+3@stuartjmoore (#5897848)
What about the fingerprints on the black part below the screen wise guy?
I hate having to justify everything I say, but here goes... I like my Apple gear as much as the next person and the iPhone looks great (much better than the WM devices I have owned). BUT the fingerprints on the screen is a legitimate gripe and it's being buried, while the snarky rebuke gets the thumbs up! Screw you apple-flavoured koolaid drinking drones. Grow up, realize Jobs' RDF is real, put down the fscking koolaid! Many of us just like Cocoa and the nice GUI on the *nix core, and we get lumped into the same category as the 11 year old Apple worshipers.
Sorry kids, but even Apple can't put out 100% flawless products every time. No matter how much you want them to. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -8/+3I would gladly sacrifice on of my children to be in Stephenson's shoes for that one moment of glory.
OH THE GLORY!!! - ahhell, on 10/12/2007, -15/+9iWings??
Apple makes tampons now? - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -8/+1The FCC Chairman would be one of very few if he did.
The public at large certainly does not have it. - soapandfoam, on 10/12/2007, -12/+3you're a filthy whore for being pregnant at 14.
- auxplage, on 10/12/2007, -10/+1It is a combination thereof - the background makes the prints look worse than they actually are.
- LucerinRed, on 10/12/2007, -14/+4yes the amount of absorption determines the music and volume your ipod plays
