- daveddd, on 10/12/2007, -1/+31The purpose of this website is to gain free publicity.
- WiseWeasel, on 10/12/2007, -1/+20Oh yeah, I've got a raging clue!
- latova, on 10/12/2007, -3/+19I think I'm getting a clue.
- stukdog, on 10/12/2007, -3/+17Let this be the first and last time we hear of Hubert on Digg.
- TugsMcgroin, on 10/12/2007, -7/+13This marketing campaign isn't even thinly veiled and the mac fanboys are eating it up. No wonder marketers think consumers are like sheep.
- DoMaurier, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6You get a free app if you follow the stupid monkey trail. If people want this spoiled I'll happily post all the info you need.
- dmoney06, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4From Widget Machine: "Hey guys! You're almost there... but first you'll have to find my brother. Hope you had some fun!"
- vertinox, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Hubert is the Mac version of Banzai Buddy.
And you won't be able to drag him to the trash without a fight. - yensed, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3If "Hubert" is such a mystery, How do we know his name?
- ohstoopid1, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I followed him this far:
Thank you for following this wild monkey chase. Hubert has received a gift from the people at MacHeist to give out to those who made it this far. Click him one final time to download a totally free copy of the excellent Sillysoft game, American History Lux (normally $15), and enjoy!
And if you're wondering who Hubert is, you're out of luck for now. We can't talk about it.
http://whoishubert.com/donttouchme/ - Langford, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3If you follow the links from site to site, it leads you to a final page with a free download of a game they say normally sells for $15, and a small explanation.
I have the URL, but somehow it just didn't see sporting to share it. - MedHead, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2But when one mouses over the icon on the iClip 4 page, the browser shows a link to unsanity.com.
- xenixninja, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Yeah, a free game. :D
- Beaner, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Very weird. I saw him on the Awaken page last night and was puzzled - now I see this on digg. Here is the URL: http://embraceware.com/software/awaken/ - he's in the bottom right column - popping out of the jungle.
- mc_hambone, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Hucares?
- dmoney06, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2If you click on him on that page it takes you to the stunt software homepage.
- ohstoopid1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Did I solve it? Maybe, Hubert remains a bit of a mystery. I dont own a Mac nor run OSX, so I think Im out of luck on the free software.
- siMac, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2MacHeist?
- zephc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Looks sorta like an Adium icon. Sorta.
http://www.bitsonline.net/sabeen/images/link-adium.gif - dramatools, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I suspect Usanity's taking the lead. Hubert is an ape. Usanity's flagship product is APplication Enchancer, an engine that drives any number of system-level plug-ins for OS X. Could the ape be the mascot for a new release of APE?
- mp87, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1on the iClip 4 page hubert takes us to unsanity.com
- hxrealm, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2"Wild Monkey Chase" - http://phillryu.com/2006/11/03/and-so-it-begins-ready-for-macheist/
- shadownight, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1My guess is that Hubert is related to the upcoming MacHeist (www.macheist.com). The developers with Hubert on their pages will probably be participating in MacHeist (which is described as "the biggest shareware event or the year).
- DidntYouHear, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3If you click on the Hubert in the Inquisitor page, it takes you to MyDreamApp.
- SPThom, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I agree with the thought that this is probably a MacHeist thing. But I suspect the end of the trail *won't* simply be a product release.
It's a bit silly, this monkey thing, but I like the idea of doing things to get creative communities working together closer. - benko, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Looks like Hubert loves widgets, and download on widgetmachine redirects to David Watanabe's Inquisitor for Safari page ... maybe a new app from David ?
- sleepwalkers, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1And on Stunt's Overflow page, Hubert takes you to the iClip page (inventive.us/iclip4/).
Looks like Hubert is a little "promotional" thingy for iClip 4. - MicrowavedH2o, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1where do you go at Unsanity?
- xsuite, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1http://mydreamapp.com/news/post/361/
Am i the only one that notices that mydreamwindows app is completely dead? none of the links to it work.
Anyone else expeirience this? - thunderer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@ TugsMcgroin
No, in the tech industry, consumers are like ferrets. Curious as hell, and often make quite a mess of things. But aren't their antics cute?
If they can make a really fun campaign and develop an app people want to use, I'm not seeing the problem. - artbell, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I saw the word "Bonzibuddy" on the page, then hit the back button. Any going concern that would reference that abomination does not have anything going for it, and should be avoided at all costs.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2get a life people
- DidntYouHear, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Update: There's a new rule: "Use Them Like They Use You"
- jdorfman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Hubert is the next Max Headroom.
http://tinyurl.com/y3jd57 - MicrowavedH2o, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I can't figure where to go after unsanity.com though...
i.e. I can't find Hubert on Unsanity.
Any ideas? - Unimaxium, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I was about to say it's probably something involving macheist. Another one of Phill Ryu's teasers, I bet...
- xsuite, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I think that since huberts secon rule is keep your enemies close, and that links to mydream app then you have to go to the enemy of that website, mydreamwindowsapp. And youll notice that the website is down. The enemy is closed....oooo the plot thickens
- Langford, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Thats were I got.
I don't have a Mac either. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3wow this hubert is very cute and mysterious!!!! i think i'll go buy a Mac!!!!!!!!!!
- uownedge, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3How this can be related to being sheep is beyond me. Furthermore, it's not even an Apple promotion...You Mac haters are worse than the fanboys...and I hate fanboys of any kind. It's stupid to be closed minded, particularly in the technology field.
If anything, it's a creative and interesting approach at a promo. The linked site may just be another blog, but the story over all is kind of cool for something different.
Obviously it's working, since it's drawing a lot of attention, so it can't be all that bad of an idea. I almost have to wonder if it's a collective effort to draw attention to a lot of the apps you see on these sites. Just looking through I've seen quite a few that I've never heard of, but look like they are worth checking out. - krey, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1If you follow the path you will end up here: http://whoishubert.com/donttouchme/
Oops, seems someone preceded me. :( - tomburns, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0***** Hubert. Am I the only one who remembers the craptastic ZOTgeist marketing scheme?
http://sanstelos.com/2006/11/03/viral-marketing-mac-shareware-style/ - SnapETom, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3http://duggmirror.com
- xenixninja, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Why? Interested?
- rebuilder, on 10/12/2007, -6/+6Thanks for the spam.
- DidntYouHear, on 10/12/2007, -5/+5Just found Hubert on Widget Machine:
http://www.widgetmachine.com/ - vertinox, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1hey... i almost bought that game
i'm in luck today! - realpolitik, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2http://duggmirror.com/apple/Hubert_is_a_mystery_Mac_icon/
- stainboy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0each site it links to, you can hunt around and find another image of Hubert that links you to another shareware developer, and so on. it takes you all the way back to Phil Ryu's site, at the link posted by hxrealm above.
- TugsMcgroin, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1@uownedge
Don't worry. Your mac fanboyness isn't being called into question so there is no need to get all defensive! Your should really question your motives for defending a snide comment made about a marketing promotion pertaining to an apple product. Anyway, nobody has said anything about hating macs, or used the word hate at all.
And here is the link I was making regarding sheep:
Sheep are easily led. Mac Fanboys are easily led. The connection is that both groups are easily led. I hope I explained it clearly enough. -
