- inactive, on 03/08/2009, -1/+24If you buy something, you should have the right to do what you want with it. I don't appreciate companies telling me what I can do with something I paid good money for!
- MrGaw, on 03/08/2009, -0/+23if you restore the phone before giving to apple for repairs, they can't tell the difference
- PleasantKiller, on 03/08/2009, -1/+17you would think that digg having the users it has would already have jail broken their iphones...
- Rileyluck, on 03/07/2009, -1/+11well if you want to have the ability to use a video recorder on your iphone then yes
if your happy with the apps you have then thats your choice - OSJunky, on 03/07/2009, -2/+11Apple could easily eliminate the "rogue app stores" by adding some additional functionality

http://hackulo.us/forums/index.php?showtopic=651 - syclonefx, on 03/08/2009, -0/+7But without third party developers Apple is nothing. If someone write an app for the iPhone and submit it to Apple and then Apple never approves it and lets it sit in limbo for 5 months, the developer might give up on their app. This has already happened. The StarPlayr team has given up and called it quits to get their app.

The main reason to JailBreak you iPhone are some of the basic features that most other smart phone have. Like MMS, copy and paste, video recording. If Microsoft figured out how to do this on Windows Mobile why can't Apple do this on the iPhone. - MasterQ, on 03/08/2009, -0/+6You couldn't be more wrong. Apple's approval limits what you can do with your phone because they won't allow apps that compete with (read: are much better than) their apps, or ones that do things that apple doesn't want you to do, such as video recording or copy & paste. Also, "If it was good app, it would be on the Apple App Store"... have you looked at some - scratch that.... most - of the apps on the app store? They're pure digital crap.
- Eminemdrdre00, on 03/08/2009, -0/+6Why is it "i.gizmodo" now?
- juttman, on 03/07/2009, -1/+7I'm kind of a noob, is this a good idea?
- glu0n, on 03/08/2009, -0/+5xGPS
http://xgpsdev.xwaves.net/ - g0tanks, on 03/07/2009, -1/+6Too bad they didn't mention redsn0w.
- LukeBeaumont, on 03/08/2009, -0/+5Not sure about the EULA (as I don't care about the EULA), but I am pretty sure it cannot brick your phone.
- apolloandi, on 03/09/2009, -0/+2wtf, when did jailbreaking become newsworthy on digg? no wonder im never here anymore
- wwwdot1jesdotus, on 03/08/2009, -0/+2It is safe. However, after jailbreaking my iphone and trying out the many apps available, I ended up restoring it. Most of the apps were just junk (buggy, had ads, etc.). Sure, there were a couple good ones. But in the end, I really like the nice clean, simple apps that are already available. Plus, now orb is available through the app store so I have everything I want already.
I guess it's a personal preference. - bbigs, on 03/08/2009, -0/+2Which application does text to speech GPS?
- judicar, on 03/08/2009, -0/+2Before the app store came out I had my iPhone jail broken and even wrote a few apps, including this one http://www.installerapps.com/2007/11/14/squid/, this was looong before there was an sdk.
Now though I'm happy with the store enough that jail breaking the phone isn't worth the effort or other inconveniences. - inactive, on 03/08/2009, -1/+3Welcome to Apple. As long as it from Apple and you pay good money for it, then they'll let you use it.
- Borg7609, on 03/08/2009, -1/+3I can't live without my jailbroken iPhone! I'm so glad I did this a few months ago!
- amitait, on 03/08/2009, -0/+2Too bad they didn't gave any good sources.
- g0tanks, on 03/07/2009, -1/+3The link in that article ended on and-for-free instead of the original and-free, so that's probably why the dupe checked didn't catch it.
- windohs, on 03/08/2009, -0/+2Apple is all about decreasing functionality to get you to buy accessories, actually. For instance, macbooks used to come with remotes and all iPods used to come with power bricks "out of the box". This is no longer the case.
- DaviDTC, on 03/08/2009, -0/+1The title not being exact doesn't matter at all. 90% of the title was a match and the description is a complete match. The dupe detector would find it with ease.
- Xeniv, on 03/08/2009, -1/+2have my touch jail broken, free apps are great.
- inactive, on 03/09/2009, -0/+1digg users are n00bs
- jermm, on 03/08/2009, -0/+1Reason #1 why appstore apps can't run in background.
- fathermarlow, on 03/08/2009, -0/+1After reading this I actually thought It'd be a swell idea to give it a go. Something is missing from this tutorial for jailbreaking for windows users; my phone was stuck in reboot mode. It took several help forums to figure out a way to get it out of this mode and start to restore through iTunes. Just a heads up for windows users, it seems like maybe you should follow the steps of a more thorough tutorial than this one to jailbreak.
- diearzte2, on 03/08/2009, -0/+1Crazy as in how? My iPhone will randomnly crash sometimes. As in, nonresponsive to either external button, complete blackscreen. Won't powerdown, but if people call me I can answer, but after the call it just goes back to being useless. Eventually I will be able to get it to reset by forcing it. Kinda makes me want to lock it back up.
- echunny, on 03/08/2009, -0/+1I jailbroke my phone before... but my battery-life drastically lowered, so I changed it back. Anyone have the same problem/fix?
- AravindJose, on 03/08/2009, -0/+1Since this doesn't void your warranty (they say), no problems.
- hiro, on 03/08/2009, -0/+1No, made no difference to my battery life. I couldn't live with an unjailbroken iPhone, it's just too basic.
- mbfielding, on 03/08/2009, -0/+1yes.
- anttheman101, on 03/08/2009, -0/+1http://redsn0w.com/
patience - bizkit00, on 03/08/2009, -0/+1is there any risk of them 'catching' you breaking the EULA, and bricking your phone?
- pyrates, on 03/08/2009, -0/+1Mine has been jailbroken since day one and it has been incredibly useful with all the apps that I can install that aren't in the app store. Best reason besides being able to unlock it, is for call blocking software. Those who say you don't need to jailbreak it because of the app store are just fooling yourself and are doing what Apple says you should do.
- mohsenxp, on 03/10/2009, -0/+1I had them all and my iPhone was turning into a hamster.
Got rid of them all except for Installous.
Anyone who doesn't know what installous is - check out appulous!
Goodbye paying for apps from Appstore. - ikeeel4money, on 03/08/2009, -1/+2here is a better site that explains things in detail: http://www.hackthatphone.com/20/read_me_first.html
- keno8719, on 03/08/2009, -0/+1Old news. Let me know when I can jailbreak my 2nd gen iPod Touch .
- duccodude, on 03/09/2009, -0/+1Reasons for jailbreak:
Installous
YellowSn0w
OpenSSH
SBsettings
xGPS
Winterboard
MxTube
PhoneZap
Cycorder - DaviDTC, on 03/08/2009, -2/+2How do goats, misspellings and crappy comics help you jailbreak an iphone?
- clickmyface, on 03/08/2009, -1/+1Once Apple released the App store the jailbreaking community was all but obliterated. For people like me who used jailbreaking and then abandoned it when the app store came, the reason is clear.
Nothing in their history suggests they won't add the key features we want. - unaryunns, on 03/08/2009, -0/+0Installous, F33k Yea.
- InorganicMatter, on 03/09/2009, -1/+1I love how these articles always try to pull the "fair use" card. Let me fix the title:
"How to pirate Apps from the iTunes Store, and steal Bandwidth from AT&T." - Subpoena, on 03/08/2009, -2/+2I thought this voided the warranty. How are they claiming otherwise?
- passedoutghost, on 03/08/2009, -3/+1Too bad they didn't tell ipod touch 2G owners that this won't work for them.
- inactive, on 03/08/2009, -4/+2Why would a developer bite the hand the feeds them. Without Apple your NOTHING. While the apps look interesting, its not something I would Jailbreak my phone for. Most of the apps are lame. The developers these Bad Markets sites are developer who can follow the rules and wine about Apple. This is a bad idea.
- inactive, on 03/08/2009, -5/+2next on digg: "How to Download and Install Free Software Using Bittorrent and Daemon Tools"
- inactive, on 03/08/2009, -4/+0No its a stupid idea. If it was good app, it would be on the Apple App Store. The apps on this store are from developers that can't follow Apple rules, which are not bad.
