- icepick314, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11my math must be REALLY bad...
i counted 3 words..... - terrablebyte, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5It is physically impossible to break your iPod through a softmod.
There isn't a e-book reader or a decent calendar yet, but it is worth the risks as there aren't any. :P - Solitude12, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Hmmm, very interesting. I did this before with other stuff but strange how pc mag did this.
- computergee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4You can play video on a nano, I have done it =). I uninsulated it though, because the nano can only play uncompressed video, which takes up A TON of space.
- greekgoat91, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5you're a tard, it's called restore in the updater
- TheCheeks, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4so they're, what, a few years too late on this Linux iPod stuff?
- Matrixsjd, on 10/12/2007, -13/+17why the ***** would you want that?? WMA sucks balls.
- dbr_onix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Not if you screw up the firmware it needs to be recognized by the computer, which is needed to restore it.. Atleast that what I managed to do somehow to an old iPod, although it could have been something weird in combination with the harddrive dying stopping it mounting, but still, it's possible to f'k an iPod doing this
- Ben - sembetu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2When I get a keyboard for the iPod, I will consider this. The ability to have an 80GB portable computer in my pocket... shiny!! :) You would have no problem programming some pretty decent apps on it too. Python, Perl, I don't know, Apache, PostgreSQL, and FireFox...whew! Anyway, here's to blue faces everywhere.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I also published this article which was featured on the front page of digg:
http://www.digg.com/apple/iPod_Multi_Boot_the_Easy_Way
It covers both Podzilla (linux) and Rockbox. - terrablebyte, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I have linux on my 5G right now...it's pretty cool.
It's worth installing for the few apps and games you get.
If ya have any questions or need help, I'll be hanging around @ http://ipodlinux.org/forums
:) - dbr_onix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1True, I just managed to sort my iPod, after proding around the internet, along with stuff on the iPodLinux wiki, and pulling the iPod apart, I managed to get it into Disk Mode (Disconnecting the harddrive, staritng it up, connecting it to the PC, connecting the harddive), I then used rohPod to wipe the MBR (descibed on the iPodLInux wiki), iTunes then recognized it, and I could restore it.. Still, the harddrive is on it's last legs (Which have been sawen off/reattached a few times..), which is understandable since it's had a rough ~4 years..
Still, it wasn't easy to fix it (It took a few hours of tinkering before I got it to restore), so for quite a few people, it is possible to brick an iPod with this
- Ben - nstanosheck, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1She did it, and can still dance like an iTunes commercial, so why should you not do it too: http://digg.com/videos_music/Give_your_iPod_the_boot
- ElMoselYEE, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1uninstalled*
- ionvas, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0you get to play videos on a nano, and get the entire wikipedia in your pocket! (Plus like 5 versions of doom and a gameboy emulator).
- RodeoRobot, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2It's pretty cool and looks like it would be fun to try, but what can I add to my Nano that it doesn't already have?
Does it add recording capability? That would be awesome. I have no interest in playing Doom or games, but the ability to play video would be good. So would a decent calendar app and an e-book reader.
Is it worth it to risk bricking my iPod? - rabidg00se, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0no, it is ABSOLUTELY impossible to brick it with this. if all else fails, start it in disk mode and format it. then itunes will read it as an ipod in recovery mode and restore it for you. the ipl site has a whole section dedicated to this.
- YoLetsTango, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I don't understand... why do I need to format my ipod to fat32... All ipods are already in FAT32 which is why it works with both PC and mac's without reformatting. Plus, why would you want WMA format on your ipod... it sucks!
- ElMoselYEE, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i skipped the iPodLinux part and went straight to installing RockBox, i didn't have to do any reformatting at all, and got to keep all my music...the installer simply isntalled a few files and in about 5 minutes i had a new OS, fantastic.
- adml_shake, on 10/12/2007, -5/+3I think steven colbert had a better Idea on the cover of Wired a few months back...
