1) I don't remember Apple ever saying macs never crash, they only imply that they crash less than Windows running PCs.
2) Macs use to crash a lot in the old days, ever since OS X crash rates have dropped significantly in fact I've never had a total kernel level crash in OS X just like I've never had one in Linux.
I think Apple should change their chime to something more god-like. You know, just by the sound the user gets the feeling that they just came in contact with the flying spaghetti monster's noodly appendage. The current sound is almost there, but it needs more bass. - BlueStarr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Its not noise! ;0) Its called the chime.
- loup, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"2) Macs use to crash a lot in the old days, ever since OS X crash rates have dropped significantly in fact I've never had a total kernel level crash in OS X just like I've never had one in Linux."
I've seen OS X have a kernel level crash, I've only seen it a couple of times, and at the time I was working on the computers at an elementary school with around 200 or so Macs being used by students and staff, and it was over a period of 3 years that I saw this happen maybe twice. - mr_slayer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Nick was calling this a dupe because a previous digged story pointed to the same website but a different page.
Still good digg. I can use this for my project on computer history. - mr_slayer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Would help if I pointed to a link:
History of the "Intel Inside" Jingle - tarun, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0They had a THX article from the same site a while ago. I'm enjoying these articles except the annoying format of the articles.
Every paragraph has a ">>" preceding it. Very distracting. Perfect example of bad use of CSS. - gamabunta, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0") I don't remember Apple ever saying macs never crash, they only imply that they crash less than Windows running PCs."
You might want to visit the Apple site a little more often.

Read reason number one.
I'll copy it here in case you're still in denial.
Want a crash course on the Mac? Lesson 1: It doesn’t crash. Built by the same folks who designed its rock-solid operating system and its award-winning applications, the Mac always starts up and never lets you down. - optimusfx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Quadra 700 rocks!

- korteenea, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0For me, the chime from the Macintosh Color Classic (I & II) is the most memorable of all of them... but I do like the current one as well.
- skyhighrockets, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Holy *****, this is AWESOME.
:) - stewacide, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I hate that sound. I wish there was a way to turn it off: I've looked...
- Tobey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I really liked the dramatic tune my Mac would play when it crashed. And if you forgot to save something and lost your data after it crashed, that tune and the innocent little sad Mac face would make you forget all about it...
until you rebooted and remembered again.
Good times. - 4answer2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Heh heh, there is more than one startup chime, as listed in the following url. The sad mac sounds are there also:
http://www.tcp.com/~dschaub/readme.html - BBX25, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Oh, really? I did a thorough search for duplicates, Nick, and I received no relevant hits. If you're going to say 'dupe', at least link to the original. Otherwise, I'll report it as spa,
And Bluestarr, it was either "Noise" or "BOOOOOOONG!" at the moment, because I couldn't think of any other adjective. ;) - ross., on 10/12/2007, -0/+0well mine never has
- DrSbaitso, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Shouldn't it be a "chord", not a "chime"?
- MonkeyFit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Noise," in the context used, is a noun, not an adjective. ;)
- tarun, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Also the THX deep sound story: http://musicthing.blogspot.com/2005/05/tiny-music-makers-pt-3-thx-sound.html
- murusaki, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I've seen the Kernel panic crash, Only once...
A small transparent window came up. It was surprisingly polite, and informed me what had happened and that i had to restart my mac.
Has anyone else seen this? - onimusha115, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0who cares, there have been way too many articles posted about how sounds originated. I couldnt care less.
- theWaterboy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yeah- I used an app to disable that annoying sound two days after getting my Mac.
- mp817, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is so ooolldddd.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0OS X users may be interested in Mactracker
http://homepage.mac.com/ipage/mactracker/
It contains information about every single piece of hardware ever released by Apple, and includes, among other things, samples of the startup chimes for each Mac model. - grayapple, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Love to see a mac with a hacked firmware play another sound :-p but I don't think anyones got that far into the Mac firmware
- dreamkatcha, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Just what you need when starting up your Mac early in the morning when everyone else in the house is asleep!
You can kill the startup chime using either of these utilities...

http://www5e.biglobe.ne.jp/~arcana/StartupSound/index.en.html - joehobbes, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0what's with all these "sound" stories getting to the front page?
Why don't you people just subscribe to this "SoundThing" blog's RSS feed? - nanboya, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Interesting. Although the chime linked in the article is different than what's listed for the Quadra 700 in the MacTracker database...
- zyntax, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0You may want to check this site out:
http://www.prangstgrup.com/startupsound/ - diggnationdevon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I think its an awesome feature.
- barbobot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0my qudra 650 has the chime too...
- nickab, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The first thing I did to my PowerBook G4 and Mac mini was to install the Arcana Startup Sound utility to mute that annoying sound. It really detracts from the elegance of the Apple experience.
- EdLesMann, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I concure with onimusha115
no digg
tired of seeing article "how the (fill in blank) sounds became to be" wtfc? - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0ringtoned!

ok, i do agree it is annoying having that chime because when im in a friggin quite study area or lecture hall it is quite loud on my pb. anyways good article.
stoopified! - tenthousandlies, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I've been trying to figure out how to turn the chime off since I bought my iMac in June.
- Nick_Circosta, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0"wtf. my avatar"
lol and u got the idea from other websites :P
Its a long chain of ppl swaping ideas and life.. :P
And for the DUPE record... AFAIR there has been at least 1 story other then this one on the same thing with a link to the MP3 file.. with the amount of stories on digg it is near imposible to find.. that and ppl dont allways call it the same thing do they ... oh well - clvrmnky, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Dude, it's like called, "the Bong."
Dude. - flatron, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0PC PC PC PC PC PC, MAC!
(duck duck goose) - EmileVictor, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0Ergh. Why oh why haven't they found a way to play the sound decently yet? Even on G5's with half-decent (mono) speakers, it sounds tinny. However, it's all those little quirks that make Macs special.
-e http://digg.mediahug.com/ - AhronZombi, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0wtf. my avatar on digg wwas original now everyone uses their eye. god
- gamabunta, on 10/12/2007, -4/+0" Turning the Mac on is one thing, but being forced to reboot from a CRASH is a totally different experience"
So Apple does lie about macs never crashing. - Nick_Circosta, on 10/12/2007, -5/+0Dupe
