- bdsams, on 09/25/2008, -3/+35the problem with the App store is that Apple refuses to let Apps in that do things better than Apple designed programs...for Ex, the Mail App that was made that included all the gmail features was nixed becasue it would over lap Apples mail app...
Apple wont admit that there are better products out there than its own designed apps, dont cross apple and your apps get approved - mga911, on 09/25/2008, -6/+20apparently 1984 = 2008.
- streetstealth, on 09/25/2008, -0/+11It's good to see Ryan Block returning occasionally to Engadget for stuff like this -- this kind of thoughtful editorial is what he does best.
- knarfsays, on 09/25/2008, -3/+12I would grant Apple an applause for ensuring security on the device, but they seem to have their own security issues.
Apple has finally shipped a device that people want to develop specifically for and yet they raise high walls. Maybe they are testing the waters, remember as of late apple really doesn't know much about third party development on their platform other than from major studios. (Think about games and other apps for Macs compare to apps for Windows and linux)
I have a feeling things may change for apple, especially considering that Android is official.
I have an iPhone, but im developing on Android. go figure.... - santaliqueur, on 09/26/2008, -0/+9I love Google, but Google Mobile sucks. It's basically a collection of bookmarks that open Safari.
- ozziek, on 09/26/2008, -2/+9Yep it's a bitch, I mean the guy that wrote Prsim got $250,000 clear profit. Poor bastard.
Once developers start being a bit more innovative instead of building:-
- Flashlights
- Todo apps
- Bill splitters
- Countdown timers
then they might start winning. - inactive, on 09/26/2008, -0/+7We already explained to you - it isn't WTF backwards. I'll let you look it up so you don't feel so stupid.
- inactive, on 09/26/2008, -1/+8For your sake, I hope you're being sarcastic.
- kupa, on 09/26/2008, -1/+6I don't think so, look at this username. That's a scary comment right there.
- Rudegar, on 09/26/2008, -0/+4kinda ironic that jailbrake apps don't seem to require a mac to be made but
app store apps can only be developed on a mac - jjustin01, on 09/26/2008, -0/+4I'm praying that either you are a retard who managed to get their hands on a computer while the nurses weren't looking, or there is actually some sarcasm in that post.
If you not, then you should consider being the former. - surferjoemaui, on 09/26/2008, -2/+6Apple is doing just fine without the complainers. It makes me laugh when people try and play stupid (duh, I had no idea my app that competes with the way apple makes its' money would be rejected). Apple has thought all of this through very carefully to bring us a good product. For them to not want to get screwed over like MS did to them is not surprising at all. if you want an open platform android is waiting. Next time it all seems too confusing ask your self "If I ran apple Co. what would I do?'. Oh yea and the 'rebel against the man' crap, have fun with that while you watch someone else make all the money
- inactive, on 09/26/2008, -1/+5So if you had a great idea, like the Trism Guy who has made $$$$$'s you wouldn't sell it through app store out of spite for apple eh?
Lies. - roodammy44, on 09/26/2008, -2/+5Your username should be AppleMacTard
- phaxian, on 09/26/2008, -1/+4dugg for bringing up the 1984 commercial..again.
- MtheoryX, on 09/26/2008, -1/+4Successful troll is successful?
- RobotBuddha, on 09/26/2008, -0/+3Same with the podcast downloading. I can't stand how itunes handles it. I never did get any reply from the guy whose app was rejected, which is really a pity. A similar program to it is the only thing I'm missing from my jailbroken 1.x install.
- jwdav, on 09/26/2008, -0/+2If the alternative to get to a cross platform SDK is building Java apps, I'll take Cocoa any day.
- scarz99, on 09/26/2008, -2/+4Yeah, okay...
- aristotle0dude, on 09/26/2008, -1/+3Oh no. Those poor devs making all that money without having to setup infrastructure to promote, distribute and sell their products.
Give me a break. - MattBD, on 09/26/2008, -0/+2Meanwhile, back in reality...
- inactive, on 09/26/2008, -4/+6People are taking it way too easy on Apple in regard to these offenses, always couching criticism in some understanding apologetic terms. *****. Developers are getting SCREWED after FOLLOWING THE RULES. And this continuously escalating "NDA" crap, where nobody is allowed to talk about anything even to other people under the same NDA, MUST BE REJECTED SOUNDLY BY THE DEVELOPMENT COMMUNITY.
Apple needs to experience a widespread REVOLT from all the registered developers. Post code. TALK about code. Talk about ***** rejections. If they want to shut down the entire third-party development effort, then that'll be the end of their *****. - alansky, on 09/26/2008, -2/+4Talk about blowing smoke up your own ass! The App Store is the new Gold Rush for developers who have what it takes to play the game. Others need not apply. And please stop whining!
- dhmlco, on 09/26/2008, -1/+3FTFA: "But mitigating the inherent risk of having their hard work nixed, developers are likely to either avoid the platform entirely for applications requiring any significant level of investment."
Then again, the developer for Trism has made $250,000 (thus far) for a month or so of part time work.
Somehow I suspect that more than a couple of developers will roll the dice for that kind of potential payout. - chrish, on 09/26/2008, -0/+2I think it's more than that. There are many applications on the App Store that duplicate Apple app functionality. e.g. heaps of calculators, many apps let you take photos as an alternative to the Camera app, there's heaps of alternatives to Notes (TextGuru being the best), and so on.
So, why then is Apple really blocking apps? I reckon its apps that have the potential to dent Apple's income strreams, such as iTMS and MobileMe.
I suspect it blocked the email app because Apple wants you to use MobileMe. That app sounds like it was aimed at Google apps users.
And PodCaster, maybe it would have meant people wouldn't go to the iTunes store as much.
And Pull My Finger? Probably sounded too much like Ballmer. - sjorsvb, on 09/26/2008, -0/+2So what's the Apple alternative for Pull My Finger?
- Ravatar, on 09/26/2008, -1/+2HTC Touch HD.

- mrBitch, on 09/29/2008, -0/+1RE: " Developers are getting SCREWED after FOLLOWING THE RULES. "
You have no idea what you are talking about do you?
The podcaster app was rejected because of the pre-existing rule RE duplicating functionality within iTunes.
It's Ok to make lots of duplicate calculators, etc. since they are NOT part of iTunes.
Apple DID REJECT Podcaster, but Apple did NOT reject FLYCAST because it does NOT duplicate iTunes functionality, but ADDS TO IT (via ability to stream podcasts). - akaz, on 09/27/2008, -0/+1No.
- mrBitch, on 09/29/2008, -0/+1RE: " The rest of the world has taken a look at it, and we're not impressed. "
Oh really?
Well, the japanese inventor of the "i-mode" mobile web service disagrees with you :
" Takeshi Natsuno, the inventor of Japan’s i-mode mobile web service and former Senior Vice President NTT DoCoMo, said in an interview, “I believe the iPhone is closer to the mobile phone of the future, compared with the latest Japanese mobile phones.” Natsuno also said uses the iPhone 3G himself. " - scarz99, on 09/27/2008, -0/+1.........
- Rudegar, on 09/26/2008, -0/+1they could release a cocoa sdk and compiler and envioment for gtk
then it would work for both linux and win32 and
would result in getting a lot more good developers to
make iphone apps
and nail it into the ground as the best
smart phone because of best program base
but hey thats just my 2 cents - jwdav, on 09/26/2008, -0/+1What do you think will happen when someone builds a Google ad blocker or replaces Google search & mail with Yahoo search & mail on Android? Being "open" and all ...
- vassar, on 09/27/2008, -1/+2I love my iPhone and I love the AppStore.
- kishosingh, on 09/26/2008, -4/+3"100 million programs downloaded" its only cause of Google mobile?
- scarz99, on 09/26/2008, -4/+3Cydia ftw
- santaliqueur, on 09/26/2008, -3/+2Yeah, everything is Big Brother, Orwellian...Is there anything that's not a conspiracy?
- ibeetle, on 09/26/2008, -5/+4Oh, boy, another daily Apple-is-doing-it-all-wrong-what-a-bunch-of-incompetent-losers story.
Everything Apple does is wrong when they do it. A year later the same jack wads that predicted Apple would be out of business are praising them for being visionaries and ahead of the curve. - RyomaNagare, on 09/26/2008, -2/+1"Suck their *****"
its been said to be much better, I wouldn't know though. - Auzy, on 09/26/2008, -8/+6The reason I haven't programmed for it is because they don't deserve 30% of my profit I feel.
Because prior to my program being developed, I need to have spent hundreds of dollars already on a Apple computer anyway, and then also buy an iphone to test it. If its not going to even be approved at the end, its a waste of my time. Also, next time you go shopping for Apple software, ask non-apple resellers how much apple gives them on Apple's software.
No wonder Apple seem to have a huge staff turnover rate. - Sansul, on 09/26/2008, -5/+3The reason tethering is not allowed is probably because that is a feature in Iphone v3. Just like Ipod Photo had video processing power, it wasn't unlocked until Ipod Video came out.
Keeping the application functionality limited probably gives apple room to introduce new features only supported on the new more expensive hardware, like copy and paste... - rexdude, on 09/26/2008, -8/+5Screw Apple.
The iPhone solely owes its success to the fanboy legions within the US-and the fact that your mobile market is utterly primitive compared to the rest of the world. You haven't seen anything better, so what Apple provides looks like manna from heaven.
Whoever heard of phones being supplied by the operator- with useful features crippled, locked into 2 year contracts and so on?
Whoever heard of PAYING FOR INCOMING CALLS/SMSES!!!!!
So when they release their phone- no matter how crippled it is features wise, everyone falls over themselves to buy it for its blingy interface. It amazes me that people still fall all over themselves to blow Apple despite such draconian terms of usage, both for the phone and the SDK.
Look at the other side. Symbian- which has shipped on over a billion devices over the last decade- has gone fully open source. Nokia- which sells 1.5 million phones A DAY(check their 4Q 2007 results)- provides you with a free to use handset with no restrictions whatsoever right from the start. You don't have to jailbreak it or flash the firmware and void your warranty in order to get those features. (The same goes for every other handset manufacturer)
Enjoy agonizing over Apple and the iPhone, America. The rest of the world has taken a look at it, and we're not impressed. - inactive, on 09/26/2008, -10/+4Had I not been stuck in a contract with another provider I would have been standing in line right with all of the other fanatics on the day the iPhone was released. For the past year, I have closely followed the iPhone news and endured hours and hours of my fanboy friends drooling over their phones and showing me just how cool it is to be able to tap your finger on the screen and make it do "stuff".
Now, after waiting and waiting, my contract will be up and, to tell you the truth, I don't think I'll buy an iPhone. It has had so many problems in addition to the issues that Ryan Block has pointed out in this article. I don't need a phone that I have to jailbreak in order to get decent functionality out of it (especially at the price you have to pay for minutes and data) and I don't really care too much for Super Monkey ball, either.
So, I will continue to wait and watch for something to upgrade to; but for now my 30 dollar a month phone bill and laptop will work just fine. - temugen, on 09/26/2008, -8/+2You have no idea the trouble I went through to translate that. And yes, I realize I'm not posting the translation :)
- inactive, on 09/26/2008, -8/+1Spelling "WTF" backward: not funny then, not funny now
- inactive, on 09/26/2008, -12/+4ชุดนอน ซ่อนความนัย อะไรในคุณ!!
- AppleMacStud, on 09/26/2008, -19/+3Guys, it's no mystery. Just play by Apple's easy rules and you won't have any problems. Why do losers try so hard to make the greatest company on earth look bad?
Apple is the most just and developer friendly company on earth. Apple lives up to Google's slogan, "Do no evil." Steve Jobs is the greatest CEO on earth who leads the greatest and most innovative company on earth.
