Yeah, because Apple iPods are made in the USA. Oh wait... - Snoz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+25Blame Canada, eh?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+22Damn you Canada.
Damn.
You.
To.
HECK. - jstohler, on 10/12/2007, -1/+22This is a tangent, but in China you can actually buy an iPod knockoff called a jPod. I can't remember the price, but it was well under $100.
- PueSi, on 10/12/2007, -2/+16The Wii here in Mexico cost $500 and the stores are trying to sell the PS3 for $1400. The minimum wage is around $4 dollars....a day.
- mtcow, on 10/12/2007, -3/+14If it makes you feel any better, us Canadians (eh?) have to pay for 14.5% of tax, which makes it about $165.
- gronne, on 10/12/2007, -9/+20Which is about the monthly salary for the average Chinese worker -- working 12 hours a day, six days a week no less.
- plum, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10Here in Serbia, the price for 80GB model is around US$600-650 and for 8GB nano is US$400. And average monthly salary is around US$250-300.
- windwaker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Here in Egypt, an iPod costs $138.73, at current currency exchange. And that's for the 30GB version. They're subsidized here.
- HMTKSteve, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9So, are these pre-tax prices or after-tax prices? Let's not forget tariffs too.
- wiggimt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6No need to convert USD to USD, so it's the actual price, which is 149 even.
- dhrubin, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8If you factor in Sales Tax, Canada is not the cheapest. In British Columbia Sales tax comes out to about 13%. Figure that into the cost of getting your hands on an iPod and it won't come out to being cheaper.
Plus factor in that Canadians make CAD, not USD, unless you have USD convert it to CAD go up to Canada, buy an iPod, then declare then get the Sales Tax returned to you (If you are a resident of the US), then maybe it's cheapest. But that would be a pretty big pain in the a$$ if you ask me. - sven007, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Wow, someones touchy over 4.80$.
Canada: $144.20 USA: 149.00 - kopaka649, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Hehe no PST in Alberta.
- OldSchoolJohn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5"roughly $327.71"
Roughly?
Give or take $.00000001? - nubtard, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5218 USD is the cheapest here in South Africa.
- goodoldharris, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4JackHoffman:
"Leave it to The Economist to compare pre-tax and post-tax prices for goods which have vastly different warranties and other additional costs in different countries (like translation and recycling requirements). That's why they write about the economy while other people run it."
Bic Macs have warranties and you can recycle them? Because Bic Macs are the only thing the Economist compared. An Australian bank (the Commonwealth Bank) did the comparison on the iPods. And note that banks do play a significant part in the running the economy. In any case, both the bank and the Economist likely recognize the limitations of these kinds of price comparisons. - kalleanka, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Regarding Sweden (nr 3 on the list), we also have 25% sales tax, so that pushes up the price too.
- _jens_, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4In Iceland:
iPod nano 2GB : $299
iPod nano 4GB : $399
iPod nano 4GB : $500
iPod 30GB : $571
iPod 80GB : $800
:( - zang74, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Apparently you have the time to sit and comment on useless Apple stories. And then complaining that they're on Digg when you can just easily block them.
Sad, very very sad. - halik, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3the big mac index works pretty well too... I heart economics
- dubcanada, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3All these figures are converted into US dollars.. And you can buy a iPod Nano 2GB from the Apple iPod store for $169 (equal to roughly $143 US)
- YJ2k2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Actually GST has been 6% since June of last year. I was happy about the change, until I noticed my paycheck shrunk a bit. Turns out they raised some other taxes to compensate.
- AK10, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Anyone in the frozen north want to pick me up a cheap ipod?
- cdnbambam, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3You did get your GST back when you left didn't you? I believe you still can by mail.
http://www.cra-arc.gc.ca/tax/nonresidents/visitors/qa-e.html - thunderl, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3This is total *****! You say that because you've never had iPod. It CAN be used as external hard/flash drive without any limitatitons. It sorts the music it plays in a strange array of folders (for faster searching), but it doesn't stop you to copy some mp3s or any other file types in your own folder (which is invisible for the player) and then transfer it wherever you want. I bet that your 25 € player doesn't have that easy and fast to use interface, nor artwork. Believe me, once you've tried iPod you won't go back.
- sagenumen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3My cousin was just here from Poland and he made it a point to buy an iPod before he went back. The $250 iPod video he bought here goes for $500 over there. Slightly related: GAP is considered to be a fairly upscale retail shop over there, so he stocked up. He said the price is about double in Polish GAPs.
- aahpandasrun, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Well, sucks for you. Maybe next time try importing it. Shipping costs are usually < $10
- AK10, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Oh my god its a giant conspiracy! Where does the change go? Nobody knows!!!
- hthth, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3"Brazilians pay the most for an iPod, shelling out $327.71, well above second-placed India at $222.27."
Actually, according to this, Iceland should be in second place; we pay $297.89 for a 2GB Nano. - franksands, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3at madformadness :
Because we have a million different taxes for the same thing, so the price goes up 250% the original price. After that, there's mail order, transportation, and of course the distributer's profit margin. - hiPpymIck, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4wheres (soviet) Russia on the list?.....
ps simpsons diepod
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1PLqIr-5LSI - jutendouji, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Argentina over here. The prices are insanely expensive over here for this kind of stuff (or any kind of stuff for that matter). Here's a list of the prices that you can find around here (the CHEAPEST prices, that is. It does get more expensive, especially at OFFICIAL Apple Stores... it's insane).
iPod nano 8GB: USD 314.99
iPod nano 4GB: USD 268.99
iPod nano 2GB: USD 208.99
iPod Video 80GB: USD 454.99
iPod Video 30GB: USD 334.99
iPod Shuffle 2Gen 1GB: USD 130.00
And that's the cheapest price you can find around here... it's too expensive. Minimum wage here is around USD 200-300.
EDIT: Also, this is Grey Market/eBay kinda thing... at an official Apple reseller, you can add 50 to 100 USD more to each price, EASILY. - madformadness, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5Could someone please explain to me why is the ipod so much more expensive in places such a Brazil?
- mrbro, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Right, R$899 (prev gen iPod 1GB) / 2.13 (exchange rate) = U$422, not U$327 as the article says.
I want to know where did they get iPods in Brazil for that cheap.
http://latam.apple.com/pricelist/br/?t=h - airmann90, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5@jstohler
Isn't jPod a book? - avsa, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3oh and there's an explanation for that. We have a subsidized electronics industry in the middle of the Amazon forest. A lot of taxes..
- clicksa, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2We have the same problem in South Africa!
The iPod Video cost R3912,00 which is $554
Last year when the iPod prices dropped the prices in SA actually went up!
I would love to be able to order from the US but I have tried and the US online Apple store will not allow it. We are also not allowed to purchase songs from the iTunes? I do not get this?
Someone please talk to the people at Apple and ask them to ask the SA store to please stop ripping us off!
Thanks - ReyBrujo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2iPod Nano 4gb down here (Argentina) is $1400 (that would be USD 451). I would think the 2gb one to be similar to the Brazilian price :-(
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3It depends on the country import taxes and stuff. I know in Vietnam, imported electronics and automobiles have insane taxes put on them. A Toyota Camry in Vietnam cost about $60,000. I just went there during the summer and a PSP cost about $300 compare to $200 here.
- JackHoffman, on 10/12/2007, -5/+7Leave it to The Economist to compare pre-tax and post-tax prices for goods which have vastly different warranties and other additional costs in different countries (like translation and recycling requirements). That's why they write about the economy while other people run it.
- ikor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2OK, let's see. I live in third largest city in Russia, Novosibirsk. In one of most largest computers store eee we have Nano 2G for 5739 Rubles.
Divide it on ~26.8 (Course $/RUR) and get 214. So Russia is between India and Sweden on 3rd place. - amohongos, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2It's interesting that the the countries generally become less affluent as you go up the list. My guess is that it's because iPods are more of a luxury item in places like India, and luxury items anywhere in the world are always very overpriced. Here in America, a person on the upper end of the working class can afford an iPod Nano, but you'd have to be very well off in India to buy one, so Apple prices accordingly.
- mutwirik, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2A 4GB ipod in Kenya goes for an equivalent of $309, rip offs!
- spingk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2And the price of transportation would be far greater than the savings.
- zonk3r, on 10/12/2007, -7/+9This is a crap article. Most consumer goods are more expensive in other countries. It has nothing to do with Apple it has to do with national trade deals, ease of import from Asia, shipping costs, tariffs, supply and demand among other things. How much do video game systems cost in other countries? How much are TV's, microwaves, stereos, cars, you name it? Europeans laugh at us Americans complaining about prices. Ask Australians about how much things cost...
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Canada loves the iPod.
- koregaonpark, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2This is so true. They charge ridiculous amounts for both Macs and iPods in India. :-(
- trigon77, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I believe the purpose is to compare purchasing power, not to where to buy an ipod on the international market
- aristotle0dude, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5@Dumbledore: Our educational system in Canada actually works unlike the American public school system.
