- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+19"One of the most notable Linux modules is iDoom, which lets you play Doom on your iPod. The game currently does not have sound... "
it does if you play it on Rockbox =D
rockbox for the nano kicks ipodlinux's ass for the nano, the only thing rockbox needs is a better gameboy emulator & support for compressed video playback - Heavy, on 10/12/2007, -3/+17If you have to ask why, you're not a member of the intended audience
- t3rr0rz, on 10/12/2007, -2/+16Only downfall imo for iPods is the battery.
- johlin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10I'm not sure why the author says that it voids your warranty. It's just a software hack, whatever goes wrong you can always reformat it and run the apple restore utility.
This is cool btw. I used to have Linux on my 4G. I haven't installed it on my 5G yet but I will. - NinjaJedi, on 10/12/2007, -5/+14Am I the only person that thinks most of these hacks are pretty pointless?! I mean, yeah, it's cool that you CAN do this but the practicality of doing it is nil!
Doom? too difficlut to play - and it doesn't all fit on the iPod screen!!
Audible Menus? Would be kinda cool at first but would seriously get on your nerves after the first week!
Word Processor? C'mon, seriously?
....
But things like extra memory would be handy. And customised graphics is cool. - fifty50, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Interesting stuff. I think I'll give Rockbox a shot
- nerditup, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I used to own a 3G iPod and I can agree that the battery life was horrible, but the new 60GB iPod Video, I have yet to have a dead battery in the same time where I would be left with a dead battery on my old iPod. I think Apple has made a major improvement in their battery life. Rockbox is awesome aswell!
- leapingfrog, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6When is the firmware going to be hacked so I can use the Nike+iPod kit with the video iPod?
- dignon, on 10/12/2007, -5/+8The battery problems are way over-stated. I know that with the original iPods (circa 2001-2002) the battery was horrible, but the last two I've had - a 5G and now a 6G video - have had great batteries. I've had the 6G video iPod since before Christmas and the battery has never died on me once (including using it to watch movies and listen to music for a full 6 hr bus ride once). I usually only charge it once a week and use it for music everyday for my commute to and from work and its never once given out on me.
- astrosmash, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3On behalf of the 95% of us who have had no problems:
I'm coming up on two years with my 3G and the battery's as good as it ever was. Keep your iPod plugged-in whenever you're not using it and the battery will last four^h^h^h^h for years. - renzodesign, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4i totally agree with NinjaJedi I've hacked everyone of my iPods from 3G to a 5G (including a iPod Mini) and after about a week the "wow" factor has warn off. I mainly hack them for the extra features but even then its still just an ipod that i put in my pocket and listen to 98% of the time..
- crackintosh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I dont know about the movies, but just burn audio CDs, then import back into iTunes. you can use a RW disc and reuse it, or keep the audio CD as backup.
- sleepwalkers, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1If you do some simple Googling, you can find people who have created automatic installer scripts and such for installing iPL on your 5G iPod. I've done it on mine. It would hang on startup until I removed the offending file from my iPL installation, and from there it worked like a charm (or at least as well as this charm works on a 5G).
- muyuu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+16G, maybe 6th gen?
- wintermute1974, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Does anybody have the link for the Word Processor? The link in the article points to the wrong place.
- MiloH, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Perhaps you could win one here: http://www.bitclic.com and hack it. ;)
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1for me i did it becuase i was getting bored with my ipod and i wanted to impress my friends. But i do understand where your getting at and i couldnt agree more. Last time i played doom on my ipod was 5 months ago, and I dont even use my gameboy emulator anymore. But i still love my Rockbox :D
- Ashex, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I'm a tad miffed that they credit Engadget with the graphics customization, would be nice if they had actually mentioned the programs name (ipodwizard).
Bah, i'm just being bitchy. - sleepwalkers, on 10/12/2007, -0/+16G iPods aren't out, dur.
- Dihuko, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I first tried out iPod Linux on my 2gb Nano. I was very impressed and still love it. Doom was fun and actually easier to control than you might think. It was also fun to play videos on the Nano.
Later, I tried out Rockbox. WOW. Rockbox is amazing. It has a great music player and great support. Also, Doom actually has sound effects! It also has better controls. Rockbox still has some bugs, but is very usable. I also heard that by November it should be finished. In terms of battery life, the last I checked, it is currently less than the normal battery life, but should eventually get better then the Nano's normal battery life. - jchri09, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I wish someone would figure out how to remove the protection off of the movies and songs that I get off of iTunes. They should quit worrying about the lame ass hacks on the iPod and figure out how to do the protection removal.
- flowaus, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I've just replaced my 3G battery for the first time. Not bad after 2 or so years. I was down to 2.5 hours of play time, but more importantly it didn't last overnight. I've just replaced it with an 850mAh one - I now get 1 hour on, one night "off" plus another 7 hours.
It cost me $35US and if that gives me another 2 years of life - it's cheap, - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1After reading this article, I uninstalled iPodLinux. The iPodLinux site states that installing it on your iPod would not void your warranty, but this article made it pretty clear that it does void your warranty. Sure playing Doom and Gameboy on your iPod is a great addition... but is it really worth your warranty?
- jamesbrock, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Does anyone have a working link for "Expanded Nano Storage." The link in the story is not working.
- realmess, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0does anyone know how i can format my 60g fifth generatin ipod cus i cant restore it using the ipod updater my computer runs windows xp. if u do email me at realmess@hotmail.com i really aprreciate it
peace out - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0you can get the batteries replaced though but honestly, you might as well fetch up the extra $100 for a new model
- sarnesjo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@Ninjab3ar
Rockbox can either replace the iPod's firmware entirely or be installed beside it and let you dualboot. I ran it on my 5G iPod for a few months; worked without a hitch. Only problem is you need a Windows formatted iPod, which is a bit of an annoyance.
Installation instructions can be found here:

http://www.rockbox.org/twiki/bin/view/Main/IpodInstallation - FalenAngel13, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I've been a runner for almost 20 years now. I already have a video iPod, and want the Nike+ SooOoOoOoOoo badly! I cannot afford to buy a nano... I was even considering trading down to the nano, just so I could use the Nike+!!! But it was a gift from a dear friend..., plus I have a ton of photos & videos on my iPod... Can someone PLEASE make the hack so we can run Nike+ on the video iPod???
pretty please?

You might be interested in this: http://hymn-project.org/ - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"does rockbox replace the ipod's firmware, or does it let you dual boot like podzilla does?"
I don't think its possible to replace the ipods firmware unless you have a rockbox installer that removes the ipod firmware wich would be bad.
Rockbox does let you dualboot like podzilla but you need iPodLoader to load rockbox. (i think.. so don't take my word for it cuz i could be wrong)
Once you have iPodLoader installing Rockbox on it is one of the easyest things you will ever do in your life (drag and drop) not only is rockbox easyer to install than linux, its also more manuverable the only downfall of its manuverability is the fact that it'll be confusing as hell knowing how to use it for the first time but once you've mastered rockbox then you wont ever boot into ipodlinux or Apple's Firmware ever again. - Starbuk, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Well I had rockbox on my video ipod for a time(well about an hr), but after realising that to actually play any of my music, Id have to transfer my music (50 gigs worth ) onto my pc, then back onto my ipod in order for rockbox to view the music under a tree structure, I couldnt be bothered.
In my case I simply dont have the hd space to shift all my music back onto my pc (which is why i only have my music on my ipod in the 1st place)...
Plus, the only thing you cant do, is play doom (and have better control over the eq)...For what I want to do, listen to music, podcasts, watch videos...the ipod software is perfectly fine, and above all simple to use...so the rockbox is in the main...redundant for me.
With my Shure e2c iems I dont feel the need to tamper with my music as it sounds perfectly fine :)
Having said that Rockbox is being continually worked, and, after theyve implemented the " view music and video transferred to the ipod via itunes" facility, then I will be a lot more interested in it. That and a simple to use, better looking default gui. - Ninjab3ar, on 10/12/2007, -5/+3does rockbox replace the ipod's firmware, or does it let you dual boot like podzilla does?
- AoKuma, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0" Well I had rockbox on my video ipod for a time(well about an hr), but after realising that to actually play any of my music, Id have to transfer my music (50 gigs worth ) onto my pc, then back onto my ipod in order for rockbox to view the music under a tree structure, I couldnt be bothered. "
That is not true in recent versions at least. You can update the file cache. Then it will see all files. It is true that you need to use MP3 tags. Something that iTunes and the Apple software don't always use.
I like rockbox because you can play chess with it.
As for the article. Thought it was rather lame. iPodLinux is still difficult to install on a 5g iPod. It occurred to me that the author hadn't done much more than just reading a few sites I don't think he got iPodLinux working on a 5g. ( Though apparently it can be done )
- orangemarmalade, on 10/12/2007, -7/+3uh...6G?
- wild, on 10/12/2007, -7/+3I imagine he meant 60g
- nimmer, on 10/12/2007, -6/+1you're right.
pz2 is nice but still no powermanagement, no digg. - Aewheros, on 10/12/2007, -6/+1And that they aren't hacked out of the box and get scratchy... but especially the battery.
- nerditup, on 10/12/2007, -8/+2Rockbox is awesome!
- lcarsdeveloper, on 10/12/2007, -7/+1It's called 'reply'. Use it.
