- diggB, on 07/15/2008, -1/+9Very impressive, although it's too bad he couldn't get the built in WiFi to work. (He did have a work around of using a Dell wireless minipci card, however).
- inactive, on 07/17/2008, -3/+8WTF is with the giant bezel around that screen? All of these cheapo laptops waste a ***** of screen area on bezel. If the bottom half has to be a certain size to accommodate the keyboard or whatever, then fill the lid with screen, not bezel. Charge $50 more if needed.
- cbeach, on 07/17/2008, -12/+17diggleague: "Mac owners often look on with envy at the Ultra-Mobile PCs"
We do? Really? I'm quite happy with my Macbook Pro and wouldn't want to sacrifice the performance and usability to get an ultra-mobile device. - aliguana, on 07/17/2008, -3/+6wifi is the one area where hackintoshes fall down. Hit or miss, they always have been. BUT, on the plus side, that means that the only thing on OSX that would need any attention (should Apple wish to mass market it) would be wifi drivers. OSX "just works" on Mac and PC. Fact.
- inactive, on 07/17/2008, -0/+3"it also would of been nice"
"Would of been"? WTF? - kenvsryu, on 07/17/2008, -0/+3buy a larger laptop. don't complain when the medium pizza's crust doesn't have sauce or toppings on it either.
- Elranzer, on 07/17/2008, -1/+3@tupper: I think he means that Mac OS X "just works" *equally* on Mac and PC. Take "just works" with a grain of salt.
On that note, there's more than just the WiFi as far as issues go...
WORKING OK (i.e. with caveats!)
- VGA out (working as a secondary display, but not in mirrored mode!)
- Keyboard layout (for some reason the backslash on the UK keyboard between shift and Z is not detected, remapped to key to left of '1')
NOT WORKING
- WiFi (see below!)
- Headphone port
- Mic port
- Internal mic
- Hibernate - Elranzer, on 07/17/2008, -1/+3You mean because it runs Mac OS X?
- Zippo, on 07/17/2008, -2/+4Mac users look at tiny, cheaply-made UMPCs with envy? News to me.
- ShrimpCrackers, on 07/17/2008, -0/+2RTFA! OSX and OSX86 is largely incompatible with many Wifi cards. It is a minor hurdle that is overcome with a cheap $30-50 MiniPCI card off Ebay or on the webs.
- TransmitThis, on 07/17/2008, -2/+4Very nice. Tried it out and now have a working iWIND
- Kanaka, on 07/17/2008, -2/+4Just get a 12" Powerbook off ebay/craigs instead and be merry
- snoutspout, on 07/17/2008, -2/+4try the apple retail store! but dont forget to ask for the DVD version of this how to video!
- ShrimpCrackers, on 07/17/2008, -0/+1tupperbacharach speaks the truth. In actuality the Kalyway guys and not Apple made OSX86 largely compatible with a lot of hardware, OSX doesn't work out of the box.
But the wifi drivers are something that will be overcome by the community. For now you can spend around $30-$50 and get yourself a MiniPCI card that is compatible with OSX86. Well worth it in my opinion. - Elranzer, on 07/17/2008, -0/+112" PowerBook isn't *that* heavy...
- tupperbacharach, on 07/17/2008, -5/+6***OSX "just works" on Mac and PC. Fact.***
Is that a "fact?"
Then all the many OSX problems listed on Macfixit.com are fiction?: http://www.macfixit.com/
Same with all of the many additional OSX/Apple complaints on the same web-site's forums?: http://www.macfixitforums.com/
Other web-sites that deal with OSX problems must also be fictional. - MacParrot, on 07/17/2008, -0/+1WiFi is also an area where many actual Macs fall down as well. My kid's iMac G5 hasn't been upgraded to 10.5 because every time I do their WiFi becomes non-existent. I haven't tried it yet with 10.5.4. Does anyone know if this has solved the majority of G5 WiFi issues?
- ShrimpCrackers, on 07/17/2008, -0/+1Or you can get a 10" MSI Wind for $400 and it'll be much lighter and compatible with the Intel-only applications, unlike that aging and thrice-as-heavy Powerbook.
- Firehed, on 07/17/2008, -1/+2That doesn't change the fact that WiFi doesn't work out of the box.
- anshuman, on 07/17/2008, -1/+2the Atom is 3 times less powerfull than Celeron and it can run OSX.
I am not able to install OSx86 on my Intel Core2 Duo cpu and latest intel board with 1 ghz ram,
Beats :( . - notrub225, on 07/17/2008, -0/+1WiFi does work out of the box. This is a hack.
- flashback99, on 07/17/2008, -0/+1aging?, wtf put the crack pipe down.
- osem, on 07/31/2008, -0/+0fan boys!!!!!! fan boys everywhere!! ok, pc platform is not perfect, neither is mac os. why can't we all just get along and stop trying to one up each other and slamming the other guys product. to be honest, i am going wind cuz it has more than 1 usb port, and i can pop a 3g card into it. i am an IT that does both mac and pc and honestly, this works for me on the mobile front, whereas the air is too damn big. kinda like the iphone, yes it is thin but still too damn big and lacking the functionality i need on day to day basis. the way i see it, pc is for people who like to dither and tweak, who like options and lots of accessories, mac is for someone who wants email, web surfing and maybe some design with no intention of addons or improvements to anything. personally, i am not part of the cult, nor do i want to be. design is not everything. i hope they serve to coolaid soon!
- DaleoftheUK, on 07/17/2008, -1/+1OH ***** i can smell a fanboy war.
Either way this was cool, seems to run well. - seiha, on 07/17/2008, -2/+2very exciting, looking forward to further developments!
- binkyhuckaback, on 07/17/2008, -1/+1Step 49: there's no step 49!
- TremorX, on 07/17/2008, -1/+1No kidding. Who the hell wants to use a 10" screen on a computer? It's too big to be a phone, but too little to use for anything else.
Of course, I'm still anxiously awaiting a lightweight 19"-22" laptop, so my opinion may not count. - FlamingYak, on 07/17/2008, -6/+5No wifi. A netbook without wifi is nothing. That's as bad as decaf coffee.
- retrac1325, on 07/16/2008, -2/+1This is not in the video section and the title is "How to Install OSX...." so its a tutorial, which is the forum, not the video. It simply says at the end of the title that there is a video.
- colincornaby, on 07/18/2008, -2/+1"Mac owners often look on with envy at the Ultra-Mobile PCs (UMPCs) in the Windows world."
No, we don't. That's sounds like something a Windows fanboy would say to make himself feel better...
I'd never even heard of the MSI Wind until now, and I'm not exactly lusting over it. - fatas, on 07/17/2008, -3/+2british
- timonominus, on 07/17/2008, -4/+2I've been thinking about doing exactly this!
- JayTee44, on 07/17/2008, -3/+1Mac users envy very little.... I definitely don't envy the msi wind at all. Now, I know you envy my iPhone...
- Fixthemedia, on 07/17/2008, -5/+2The word "often" comes to mind.
- JorgeGT, on 07/17/2008, -5/+2You alone are not a statistically significant sample. Except if every mac user has a cloned personality.
- LeviTheSmith, on 07/17/2008, -4/+1http://thepiratebay.org/tor/4122511/Kalyway_Leopar ...
- inactive, on 07/17/2008, -8/+4Well, thanks for logging in to tell us that you aren't interested in the article. You've added a lot.
- jmp478, on 07/17/2008, -8/+3wtf... that thing looks like Babie's First Laptop.
- Pinkertinkle, on 07/17/2008, -7/+2Where can one get a copy of OSX?
- l800LEMMINGS, on 07/15/2008, -7/+1it also would of been nice if the link was directly to the video and i didn't have to scroll to a forum to get it
