- Capta1nA, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7This is my favorite part of Quicksilver. I use it a lot more for this than for launching apps.
- Macskeeball, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5True, but hotkeys (especially function keys) are a lot more convenient. Also, they don't take up space in the menu bar like many other iTunes controller methods do.
- directive0, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3This is somewhat obvious if you play around with the settings in, but I still dugg simply for relation to quicksilver. That free app has saved countless hours of productivity.
- redrabbit, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4yea but every mac user should have quicksilver installed anyways, so whats the point of having extra stuff?
- slapjack, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4yep. go into Quicksilver > Preferences
in the left hand pane there should be an item for iTunes.
in there, make sure "Monitor Recent Tracks" and "Display Track Notifications" are checked.
there you have it. if you use Growl, it gets even nicer. - dalesmatrix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2There's a synergy plugin/app that allows a small visual toolbar in OSX to control Itunes, but quicksilver is the best for controlling itunes via the keyboard. I have mine set for Apple+ left and right keys to skip through tracks, then apple + up/down arrows for volume.
I used to use the gesture plugin for quicksilver to use an apple key+ check/tick motion to give a track four stars...but have since just assigned it to another key combo. The options really are limitless though. - wrongplanet, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4actually you can control itunes without switching apps by right clicking (or click-holding for one second) on the dock icon and then selecting play, pause, next, previous, shuffle, repeat on, repeat off, etc from the context menu.
- dbr_onix, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3..but Linux can't run iTunes (ignoring WINE), so how can it control iTunes with keyboard shortcuts out the box..? And iTunes is free..
Sure, Amarok for example has configurable global hot-keys, but so does Winamp, WMP, Foobar2000 etc etc - all free - And one comes by default with Windows, which is installed on pretty much any pre-built PC you can buy (And considering Windows comes with pretty much every pre-build PC it's [theoretically] free, and installing Linux over it isn't saving you any money..)
I like Linux (Via SSH, I could never get used to Gnome or KDE), but your argument is silly.. - christopheles, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I like GimmeSomeTunes but I'm willing to admit that I'm an annoying Mac user who accepts annoying software.
- ChiKoo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3... or just get sizzling keys.
best itunes plugin around.. lets you control itunes whenever.
http://www.yellowmug.com/sk4it/ - adamchristopher, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2is there any way to get a visual pop up when songs switch (title, artists album art) like sizzling keys? cause i tried using quicksilver over sizzling keys and it just wasnt the same.
- Macskeeball, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1In addition to what Slapjack said, if you want Growl notifications, you'll need to install the Growl plug-in and set Growl as the notifications helper. Quicksilver distinguishes iTunes notifications from other Quicksilver notifications, so you can set a different Growl style (such as Music video) if you so desire.
- dbr_onix, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3GrowlTunes or some other Growl-notification plugin for iTunes? I tried GrowlTunes and ti seems to work, although it takes up a dock-icon space for something that should be a background item which is slightly annoying
- jchalmer85, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2There's an older app called X-Tunes that does essentially the same thing - but is only for iTunes. I can't live without it. It has a simple graphical pop-up that appears when invoked by customizable hot-keys. Check it out: http://www.pol-online.net/index.php?page=freeware
I also use and love quicksilver - but this provides another option. - jwdav, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2One of the main points of QuickSilver is that it works from any application to any application, so, for example, you can control iTunes without switching from the program you're working in.
- macgyber, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Quicksilver blows that away totally. I don't think most people actually understand it all that well. From wikipedia:
"Quicksilver is a computer utility software program for Mac OS X, made by Blacktree Software and distributed freely. It allows users to use the keyboard to rapidly perform tasks such as launching applications, manipulating files and data, running scripts or sending e-mail. It is similar to the Mac OS X applications LaunchBar and Butler, but uses a different interaction paradigm. Although it is a complex application, it is centered around a very simple three-panel interface, called the "command window": the user performs complex tasks using simple, configurable key-combinations."
"Because shell scripts and AppleScripts can be stored in the catalog, any function which can be performed using a script can be tied to Quicksilver, either through the command window, or through triggers. Because most Apple-native applications have extensive scripting libraries, many common tasks can easily be performed from Quicksilver. For instance, iTunes can be told to play or pause, increase or decrease the rating on the current track, or skip to the previous or next track.
There are various visual interfaces for the Quicksilver, alternative Constellation Menus and also a Notification Hub, which supports Growl via a plugin." - stylerm, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3@marscom
What?
I got: Nearly every mac user knows that, but some do not, and they do not care.
Is that what you were trying to say? - jollyllama, on 10/12/2007, -5/+5I really do believe that Quicksilver is the best piece of software currently available for any platform. I'll take that one to the mat.
- wiihuck, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2QS FTW
- davepascoe, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3Or... just use SizzlingKeys. Done.
- StannaDT, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I would like 2 get quicksilver
- NptPrchr, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2I use GimmeSomeTune for just this sort of thing. It lets you use hotkeys to pause, etc., and will pop up a window on track changes, etc.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1I just use foxytunes
- Fett101, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3Logitech keyboard with media keys baby!
- stylerm, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3On windows we can right click on the task bar and add an iTunes toolbar. When we minimize iTunes it turns into a small controller that can be used to skip songs, pause, play, and add ratings if you right click. I don't use a mac so I don't know how it compares to what you are doing.
- Macskeeball, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1For some time now, I've had F1-F4 assigned to this kind of thing. Play/Pause (F1), Previous (F2), Next (F3), and Eject iPod (F4). Very, very nice. Though I don't use Butler anymore, it should be noted that it can do these functions as well, although with Butler you have to use an AppleScript to eject the iPod.
- Temple, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0This is for Macs, it's what I use. Completely customizable and even has the ability to pop up a transparent window showing you details about the song! Check it out: (It's completely free as well!)
http://www.yousoftware.com/itunes/ - phillydrifter, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1Download TuneKeys.
- jumpingjohn, on 10/11/2007, -2/+0sizzling keys is where its at... http://www.yellowmug.com/sk4it/
- SonofMaug, on 10/12/2007, -6/+3I recommend SizzlingKeys for the Mac. http://www.yellowmug.com/sk4it/ . It has a very simple interface and global hotkeys for iTunes.
- strabes, on 10/12/2007, -5/+2I'll get buried for this but I can't resist posting about things that linux does out of the box for free that those other two legacy operating systems don't or can't do. amarok has global keyboard shortcut support out of the box for $0.
- espritprv36, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1Uhh... duh? just dicking around in quicksilver you can figure that out.
- macgyber, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1Nowhere near as good as quicksilver (quicksilver does everything!) the link provided definatly gets the task at hand done.
- zerotothe5th, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1There's an app called QuickTunes which I think is much easier.
http://www.dbachrach.com/opensoft/index.php?page=QuickTunes - ridgelawrence, on 10/12/2007, -8/+3This is the only reason I haven't taken quicksilver off my startup apps.
- marscom, on 10/12/2007, -6/+1I guess nearly every Mac user knows that and for the ones that do not, I kinda think that what with the power of quicksilver and the ease that these triggers provide, they wouldn't care what windows can do.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -6/+1sizzlinkeys is what i use, it appears to be very similar
http://www.yellowmug.com/sk4it/ - rajulkabir, on 10/12/2007, -9/+1Stupid article (or at least stupid Digg blurb).
I have two ways of pausing/skipping songs without switching to iTunes, I am sure there are more:
1) right-click the iTunes icon in the dock and you get a useful little menu
2) my Logitech keyboard has buttons for all that stuff at the top and they worked without me doing any special setup that I recall.
