- D14BL0, on 07/08/2008, -40/+12It's not exactly rocket science. Notice the blue near large cities. That's where the coverage is the best. Remote areas are lighter colors.
- rda1441, on 07/10/2008, -1/+2You're a moron. A key is the most important part of a map. You should be allowed to vote, reproduce, or drive.

- featherMARIO, on 07/08/2008, -51/+205BLUE = Full Coverage
RED/ORANGE = Decent Coverage
ORANGE = Meh Coverage
LIGHT ORANGE = Enjoy EDGE- devila2208, on 07/08/2008, -0/+15There's a light orange pixel right over my house. At least it seems that way :-/
- thedragon4453, on 07/08/2008, -0/+1I'm less than 10 minutes away from a 3g area. I feel your pain.
- redhitman, on 07/08/2008, -2/+2Hehe, I can go from my house in Austin to San Antonio without ever losing 3G :]
- RRJackson, on 07/08/2008, -0/+2I used to live in a big pool of blue and now I'm 30 miles south of the shoreline. :(
- late2digg, on 07/08/2008, -0/+113Just to be clear, only the area in dark blue is 3G. Everything else (red/orange, etc), you will be enjoying EDGE.
http://www.wireless.att.com/coverageviewer/- IEatHamburgers, on 07/08/2008, -0/+15Revised key:
BLUE = 3G Coverage
RED/ORANGE = Enjoy EDGE
ORANGE = Enjoy even less EDGE

- redhitman, on 07/08/2008, -0/+16Yeah, sorry, late2digg is right, only the blue areas have 3G.
The dark orange just means good voice coverage/good EDGE service. - haoafu, on 07/08/2008, -3/+0hehe
- antoniojvr, on 07/08/2008, -0/+3All right, Houston!
Still cannot justify getting into that horrible AT&T plan, though. Not a cost issue, it's a bend-over-and-take-it issue. - skribble, on 07/08/2008, -0/+2Yea... and then there are the places that don't even have EDGE (such as the "nice little town" I spent my 4th of July Weekend in southern IL).
- skibob1027, on 07/08/2008, -0/+1What town? I probably live there, lol.
- Bots, on 07/08/2008, -0/+10WRONG
On the map, blue represents 3G, dark orange is AT&T’s old EDGE network and light orange its original GPRS data service.
source - http://apple20.blogs.fortune.cnn.com/2008/07/04/is ... - double0jimb0, on 07/08/2008, -0/+6I am pretty sure the light yellow means there is no cell phone service whatsoever.
Just drove from Denver to Rapid City, SD with iPhone, did not have any service for atleast half the trip, which is reflected accurately in that map.
- devila2208, on 07/08/2008, -0/+15There's a light orange pixel right over my house. At least it seems that way :-/
- Subriot, on 07/08/2008, -11/+31Very useful map, although it seems AT&T is not ready for a 3G iPhone. *sigh*
- xilni, on 07/08/2008, -10/+9Not ready? As far as I can tell major cities and their suburbs are covered.
- AZRoboto, on 07/08/2008, -1/+2You can almost follow the interstates in the Eastern states.
- mediaphile, on 07/08/2008, -0/+9@xilni:
Compare this to Sprint's EVDO coverage, and you'll find that AT&T is far behind, i.e., they are not ready to compete.
- jonthebishop, on 07/08/2008, -3/+12That looks pretty good to me for an area as massive as the US. Most highly populated areas are covered.
- utahnkid, on 07/08/2008, -3/+12Not when compared to Verizon's 3G coverage.
http://img525.imageshack.us/img525/2482/attvsvzw3g ...
And correct me if I'm wrong but I vividly remember reading an article a couple months back talking about how AT&T would have their entire network upgraded to 3G by the time iPhone 3G was released. What happened?? - tetfsu, on 07/10/2008, -1/+1@utahnkid Your wrong and I'm correcting you...
- utahnkid, on 07/08/2008, -3/+12Not when compared to Verizon's 3G coverage.
- Archer007, on 07/08/2008, -0/+5LOL at Alaska coverage.
- machocheese34, on 07/08/2008, -3/+7that blue area has to contain at least 80% of the US population
- acevoncash, on 07/08/2008, -2/+2are you mentally defective?

- b8teriez, on 07/08/2008, -4/+22Does anyone know if there is going to be a rapid expansion of AT&T's 3G network during 2008 with the 2nd coming of the Jesus Phone?
- blahtastic, on 07/08/2008, -20/+17Anyone who says Jesus phone should be shot on the spot.
You though, I think you said it sarcastically. And I like the cut of your jib. You get a pass this time.- demesisx, on 07/08/2008, -0/+5I love it when people say, "I like the cut of your jib." Nautical pickup lines are always a hit with me.
Digging you up! - Archer007, on 07/08/2008, -2/+3You should see the way I cut a jib.
- bradleyland, on 07/08/2008, -1/+2If you ask the asshats at the AT&T store, 3G has been "coming this fall" for the last 3 years.
Dicks. - kelly, on 07/08/2008, -0/+1Thanks for the invitation... I'll be happy to shoot you for your use of the word... and then just stop there.

- mkrygeri, on 07/08/2008, -0/+4I know northern new england is getting a $59 million upgrade that will be completed this fall.
I think they are aggressively chasing Verizon with 3g and I think they will roll out LTE(4g) first - tetfsu, on 07/10/2008, -0/+1It's the "Steve de Jesus Phone" get it right!

- herting, on 07/08/2008, -0/+4I'm looking for a roommate in Brooklyn, if you don't mind the sofa or roaches you are in!
- Archer007, on 07/08/2008, -1/+6I'd only do that for FiOS.
- muffinsincream, on 07/08/2008, -3/+2Rly? FiOS has been the most problematic and unreliable internet I have ever had. Now that I saw a notice of rate increase I will definitely be switching soon.
- migitalwarfare, on 07/08/2008, -1/+1A friend of mine got FiOS 2 months ago and has been fighting with them ever since. He's had about a total of a solid week worth of uptime in the last 2 months for both TV and broadband. I know 3 other people who've dropped FiOS within a month of having it installed for the same reasons. I don't know why you're being dug down, there's plenty of problems with their service, and when they have them, they don't know how to fix them.

- Yashar, on 07/08/2008, -4/+56What's ridiculous is that people will have to pay 3G prices even if they live in an area where they will not get 3G speeds. (Central US/Alaska)
- elambing, on 07/08/2008, -0/+4im not entirely sure about this, but if you buy the older iphone wont you be able to keep the lesser bill? the only iphone 3g hardware improvement is the 3g connection, so just dont upgrade
- gordeaoux, on 07/08/2008, -0/+7well, there's the gps, slightly better battery and dramastically better audio. and white. but yeah.
- utahnkid, on 07/08/2008, -0/+3Not trying to excuse the raping from the phone companies, this is just something to compare it to. If I remember right Sprint did the same thing. This was at least 2-3 years ago when they upgraded their service to "Power Vision" and I bought a phone that happened to be compatible. I live in a small town (that was actually just barely upgraded to the higher speed) and we were still on the old system but I had to pay the same rate as those enjoying the faster speed.
Imagine a phone designed by Apple that ran on Google Mobile, the first phone company that followed Google's creed; "don't be evil". Well now I'm just dreaming. Excuse me while I resume grabbing my ankles. - desertDenizen, on 07/08/2008, -0/+2People live there?
- migitalwarfare, on 07/08/2008, -0/+1The kind of people that are dumb enough to fall for that scam do, yeah.
- elambing, on 07/08/2008, -0/+4im not entirely sure about this, but if you buy the older iphone wont you be able to keep the lesser bill? the only iphone 3g hardware improvement is the 3g connection, so just dont upgrade

http://img525.imageshack.us/img525/2482/attvsvzw3g ...- jonthebishop, on 07/08/2008, -3/+14Why doesn't it include their legacy network coverage? I would be interested to see it. I know a lot of people with Verizon phones and outside of the major cities you see on that map service tends to be crappy. I am no AT&T fanboy, I just think that graphic could be a bit misleading.
- tekkitan, on 07/08/2008, -6/+1I live in the middle of an AT&T "Blue area" and can barely get one bar outside sometimes (mostly out of coverage).
My Verizon works perfectly wherever I go. - fusionFactor, on 07/08/2008, -0/+3Inaccurate. At least AT&T map doesn't show current coverage. Not even old coverage (as shown in article).
- quomen, on 07/08/2008, -2/+1I'm digging tekkitan because personal experience minus humour means nothing here!
- Archer007, on 07/08/2008, -0/+11There are AT&T fanboys? *shudder*
- tekkitan, on 07/08/2008, -6/+1I live in the middle of an AT&T "Blue area" and can barely get one bar outside sometimes (mostly out of coverage).
- utahnkid, on 07/08/2008, -8/+4Why can't Sprint and Verizon just switch to GSM already?? That way they can share their towers between companies, advertise far better coverage, attract far more customers who are now able and willing to pay for 3G.
EVERY other major carrier on the planet, including all of Europe, primarily uses GSM don't they?- Papajohn56, on 07/08/2008, -2/+9because CDMA is better for use indoors and is way further advanced of a technology. learn the difference
- tendonut, on 07/08/2008, -1/+5Because they would basically be building their network up from scratch all over again, so all the awesome coverage that Verizon has if you had a GSM phone would be useless and you'd be working off their half-assed transitional GSM network. Unless Verizon magically turns their entire network from CDMA to GSM overnight, it's going to be a very nasty transition.
- EwMo, on 07/08/2008, -2/+1It's the network.
- Archer007, on 07/08/2008, -0/+1Maybe its me.
- p014k, on 07/08/2008, -1/+13But does Verizon have the iPhone?
- shank2001, on 07/08/2008, -0/+11nope, and that is why I am switching. Bye bye Verizon, you just lost a customer of 8 years. If only you hadn't passed up the iPhone when you had first dibs!
- Tweak1313, on 07/08/2008, -0/+2This is why I am on Verizon... The map for Verizon needs to be updated because a month ago, they switched on quite a few new 3g towers in the midwest.. South Dakota finally has something modern!
- SpitRage, on 07/08/2008, -1/+4Verizon still sux.
- danathomas76, on 07/10/2008, -0/+0One more year....will Verizon and iPhone marry?
- jonthebishop, on 07/08/2008, -3/+14Why doesn't it include their legacy network coverage? I would be interested to see it. I know a lot of people with Verizon phones and outside of the major cities you see on that map service tends to be crappy. I am no AT&T fanboy, I just think that graphic could be a bit misleading.
- michaelpinto, on 07/08/2008, -1/+23Why does AT&T hate Vermont?
- Danls92, on 07/08/2008, -3/+27Why does anybody like Vermont?
- Proctor, on 07/08/2008, -1/+14Because Vermont is trees.
- nickspohn, on 07/08/2008, -3/+34What the ***** is Vermont?
- quomen, on 07/08/2008, -1/+14The easier the state is to draw, the harder it is to live in.
- likwidfuzion, on 07/08/2008, -0/+2I'm never moving to Colorado.
- kevinwiz, on 07/09/2008, -0/+2Exceptions: Texas, Alaska
- bovox, on 07/08/2008, -2/+20Because you gave us Howard Dean.
- rarefied, on 07/08/2008, -0/+3A better question is "why does Vermont hate mobile phones?" They are notoriously anti-tower there. See http://query.nytimes.com/gst/fullpage.html?res=9F0 ...
- Firehed, on 07/08/2008, -0/+1No, a vocal minority are anti-tower. I lived there for most of my life (had to leave for work because Dean ***** up big with an IBM deal several years ago and destroyed the entire state's job market), and like anywhere else, it has its share of whiny idiots.
- rarefied, on 07/08/2008, -0/+1Such is the problem with government. Even in those that are supposed to take the interests of the people into account, it is really just a few who drive policy.
- drethedog, on 07/08/2008, -12/+9Light Orange = FAIL
- willdelaney, on 07/08/2008, -17/+1why is this on digg
- EmitStop, on 07/08/2008, -0/+9Why are you on digg?
- MrKiTT3N, on 07/08/2008, -1/+5Well fine sir, I dunno if i appreciate your tone of words. But to answer your question, I would first define "Digg"
Definition:
"Digg is a place for people to discover and share content from anywhere on the web. From the biggest online destinations to the most obscure blog, Digg surfaces the best stuff as voted on by our users...."
(source: http://digg.com/about)
Answer:
Being that we (as the majority) decided to press the "Digg It" button and you (not so much), it as reached the glory of the front page. Why? This is in a common interest in the grand scheme of AT&T's crappy data coverage quite possibly to be related to apple next generation release of the iPhone 3G.
Now, when i wake up and read the paper, you know what i do? I throw away the sports section, the reason being is i don't give a crap about it.
Save bandwidth don't bother on clicking on ***** you don't care about.
Buried- willdelaney, on 07/08/2008, -1/+5lol i made you type all that

- crcook, on 07/08/2008, -4/+5I love how the island of Kauai (west of Oahu in most maps), where I was born/grew up, and is a super popular vacation spot in Hawaii, doesn't even exist on this map. I guess AT&T has just such low coverage there it sank into the ocean.
- aforce369, on 07/08/2008, -2/+1Check off to the side there... right next to Alaska...
- crcook, on 07/08/2008, -0/+4http://www.alohaislandtravel.com/maps/images/islan ...
Compare to the coverage map. No Kauai. - Vagari, on 07/08/2008, -0/+1Well the map may not show it... but my brother is living there right now and he uses AT&T.
- JamesZB, on 07/08/2008, -6/+3I always thought Alaska was the largest state and not an island with a perfect edge. Why did you lie maps!?

- arraz, on 07/08/2008, -0/+4The amount of blue correlates with the amount of delegates a state has, except for Washington... How did Microsoft get that big of a 3G pull?
- rarefied, on 07/08/2008, -0/+3This makes sense since the number of delegates and the number of mobile users are both correlated with population.
- whatmew0rry, on 07/08/2008, -0/+1AT&T Wireless (the original one, that was first called McCaw Cellular before being acquired by AT&T in the 90's) was headquartered in Redmond, almost next door to Microsoft. Even after the acquisition by Cingular -- and the later merger of BellSouth and SBC / AT&T, the owners of Cingular -- there are many AT&T Mobility employees located in the area, including a lot of the people who work on data services.
- pstroll, on 07/08/2008, -5/+2Looks like all the places that matter have 3G with the rest being flyover country
- elambing, on 07/08/2008, -9/+3see that big blue bubble around sacramento? i live smack dab in the middle of that :)
hello iphone 3g- EvilCan, on 07/08/2008, -0/+11Congratulations...you live in a major city...?
- newbill123, on 07/08/2008, -1/+32The AT&T coverage viewer on the att.com website has a more recent map (5/31/2008). It's also interactive so you can zoom in to an area of particular interest.
Go to http://www.wireless.att.com/coverageviewer/ and click on the blue "View 3G/Mobile Broadband coverage (in select areas)" link.- hartley, on 07/08/2008, -1/+2Exactly.
For something thats so easy to go look up on the AT&T website, I have no idea why this made front page.
I've kept an eye on the map for quiet a while now watching them expand the 3G area out to the suburb area I live at. - Duositex, on 07/08/2008, -0/+2That map is completely misleading. It "rounds up" when you zoom out to the next highest coverage quality based on proximity. In other words, the more you zoom in, the crappier the coverage looks.
- DPowers08, on 07/08/2008, -0/+2I've seen that map before but just checked again and my area just got 3G. Thanks for the heads up.

Somehow I think that's what most residents were thinking way before they saw this map. Now get back to the 49th parallel and watch for Al-Qaida Mounties coming south.
- tikited, on 07/08/2008, -1/+1is it cancer, yikes.

- bone625, on 07/08/2008, -0/+2Fallbrook? *****, I hope I get 3G (or at least decent edge service) in San Marcos. I'm sick of sprint's horrible signal around here.

- MidwestDrummer, on 07/08/2008, -5/+13AT&T 3G coverage = teh failurz!
Sprint and Verizon 3G coverage FTW!- EwMo, on 07/08/2008, -6/+0Ha. Sprint.
- markpeck, on 07/08/2008, -8/+1Sprint and Verizon use Qualcomm's CDMA... Its a dead standard, used ONLY in North America... really not even comparable to GSM, used by AT&T, which is a global open standard used by hundreds of operators worldwide... your sprint or verizon phone is as good as a brick in the REST of the world...
- MidwestDrummer, on 07/08/2008, -3/+9Dead standard? And 95% of the CDMA users in the USA care why? The vast majority of US cell phone users will never need to use a cell phone internationally. Besides, anyone who's not an idiot knows you can buy a prepaid phone in your destination of choice if you happen to go on vacation. Dead standard? I'm afraid not. Neither Verizon or Sprint are going anywhere soon. Hell, Verizon is about to become the largest carrier in the USA and the largest CDMA carrier in the world. Oh, did I mention both carriers offer plenty of world phones capable of operating on heir respective CDMA networks, and also supporting a SIM card?
Your argument = teh failurz! - Beaupedia, on 09/28/2008, -0/+2While I'm not a fan of CDMA, except for data speeds, you do realize you're "facts" are off, right? CDMA is still used around the world including parts of Asia. Example: South Korea's SK Telecom has over 50% of the country's mobile users and is a CDMA carrier. Just in case you are tempted to write them off, South Korea happens to be home to the likes of Samsung and LG. Do your homework before you spout off random gibberish.

Oh, did I mention both carriers offer plenty of world phones capable of operating on heir respective CDMA networks, and also supporting a SIM card?
- Egg333, on 07/08/2008, -0/+3Boise City? I know Idaho may seem kinda insignificant but you can at least get our capital right.
- silviarunner, on 07/08/2008, -0/+3The map is old Needs to be updated. Missing alot of cities from the 3G update for the new iphone.
- nascentia, on 07/08/2008, -0/+4Glad the map-makers spelled 'Adirondack' wrong for the park all three times they used it.
I also don't get why the less densely populated areas of Flagler County, FL have 3G coverage, but not Palm Coast, the largest city in one of the nation's fastest-growing counties. Bunnell, our county capital on home of maybe 2,000 people, has 3G. Palm Coast, city of 90,000+, does not. Sense, it does not make.- MacGuy88, on 07/08/2008, -0/+3Tourists. I think that's a dead give away. Look at the area around Gainesville. That's huge and includes little redneck towns like Waldo and stuff. I think it makes sense that AT&T lit up (for the most part) the east coast of FL.
- bluvapor, on 07/08/2008, -10/+4What is a Vermont? Wikipedia comes up nothing when searching...
- handheldchimp, on 07/08/2008, -1/+2Congratulations good sir. You have won the retard of the year award!
In order to receive said award, stick your hand into your toaster, turn on, and wait for the hot sensation of victory!

- AZRoboto, on 07/08/2008, -1/+3Ugh. I am right underneath that blue patch in Phoenix, in that off-white area sandwiched between Orange and Blue.
If I go across the street I'll have full coverage! - markpeck, on 07/08/2008, -6/+1I hate people comparing AT&T's coverage to that of Sprint or Verizon... AT&T uses GSM network technology, the open global standard, and Sprint and Verizon use Qualcomm's proprietary CDMA technology, which is used ONLY in North America. Besides the geographic restriction on roaming, CDMA operators cripple the phones they sell through there retail outlets and do not let you use your own devices on there network, like you can with GSM operators, thanks to the SIM cards that GSM devices use... Its so sad to see CDMA and GSM networks compared at all, lol, there is NO comparison... I would never put up with gross lack of wireless freedom provided by CDMA operators... GSM is the only mobile technology I'll ever use.
- MidwestDrummer, on 07/08/2008, -1/+2CDMA is not ONLY used in North America. That single statement discredits anything else you say from here on out. Idiot.
- Ryan229, on 07/08/2008, -2/+1The new iPhone is being released in these countries...

All on GSM FTW.

- Beaupedia, on 09/28/2008, -0/+4How many times are you going to post this factually false post? I'll repost my debunking response:
While I'm not a fan of CDMA, except for data speeds, you do realize you're "facts" are off, right? CDMA is still used around the world including parts of Asia. Example: South Korea's SK Telecom has over 50% of the country's mobile users and is a CDMA carrier. Just in case you are tempted to write them off, South Korea happens to be home to the likes of Samsung and LG. Do your homework before you spout off random gibberish.
FYI, I am a AT&T user. There's a clear difference between being an informed individual and a fanboy.

- handheldchimp, on 07/08/2008, -1/+1Dear god. For all I know, yellow is good and blue is bad. WHAT IS THIS WORLD COMING TO!!!1!!1
- fakeblizzue, on 07/08/2008, -1/+2ummmmm that's an old coverage map.
- edkrk, on 07/08/2008, -2/+1the problem with this is that this map shows most of northern illinois with "Meh" coverage, but I know for a fact that Rockford gets NO 3G at all, as an AT&T rep has confirmed. not sure what the deal there is. Very interesting otherwise.
- alexkball, on 07/08/2008, -3/+1If you live anywhere but the blue areas, you have bigger problems that cell phone coverage.
- MidwestDrummer, on 07/08/2008, -4/+1So can someone explain to me again which states are Bush's and which are Gore's?
- muffinsincream, on 07/08/2008, -2/+2My town is on a EDGE peninsula, it borders 3G on 3 sides. ***** me.
- izikdela, on 07/08/2008, -2/+1I think you mean "F**k my life", not "F**k me". If you do mean that... you're a SICK PEDO.
- HumanRecalled, on 07/08/2008, -3/+0and people in here crapped on CDMA Networks !!!! Looks to me the supposed great GSM networks aren't ***** as far as coverage goes !!
Thanx Apple for only creating a GSM network only phone !!
Now not only being Canadian was i hoping to piggy back on At& T 's network as i live on the border of Niagara Falls beacuse of Rogers ***** !...but there isn't At& T coverage worth ***** their either !!
OH THE REALITY !!- teh_techie, on 07/08/2008, -0/+1If you live near the border, why the hell would you WANT to slip on the AT&T Network? Wouldn't there be data roaming charges for that?
- HumanRecalled, on 07/08/2008, -0/+0be better than being raped by ROgers without roaming !!
At least the chartges woudl be justifiable and i coudl get get sattlite !!

- Philbert, on 07/08/2008, -0/+3My area appears to be blue, but it must only become light orange inside my house.
- Alexcarrier, on 07/08/2008, -0/+6So, the blue areas are safe from tiberium?
- McHoffa, on 07/08/2008, -0/+2i dont even get edge coverage where i live in western NC, which is why there is no iphone in my future
- benofmerion, on 07/08/2008, -2/+2Now let's see a Verizon 3G map... Verizon FTW! (better coverage is most areas)
- vanguardanon, on 07/08/2008, -0/+2The Raleigh/Durham area seems to be really well covered. However, it doesn't matter *that* much because I spend most of my time at work or at home and I have wi-fi in those places. The time I really need the net is when I'm camping and want to check the weather. I doubt I'll have any coverage at all there.
- LeRenard, on 07/08/2008, -0/+2Apparently I'll have to drive to the seacoast/southern Maine to get 3G here in NH.
- TheSwashbuckler, on 07/08/2008, -0/+1In their dreams!
I live in a blue area, yet I don't get 3G at my home... - featherMARIO, on 07/08/2008, -0/+3This has been updated. AT&T has been rolling out 3G to new locations over the past few months.
- 04TL, on 07/08/2008, -0/+1Alaska FTL...i'm moving to Hawaii...
