- jackpot, on 10/12/2007, -4/+72having to buy ringtones of songs you already own isn't so awesome
- MarkyNouj, on 10/12/2007, -4/+51That's freaking awesome.

I think the icon in the lower left hand side of the Google Maps interface was a fork and knife icon to search restaurant locations, but I'm not sure. - howlongtoretire, on 10/12/2007, -7/+36Good catches. I watched the keynote several times and missed those points. Kudos.
- cleverboy, on 10/12/2007, -4/+29Wow. That was pretty good. I was expecting another "Google TV Beta" type spoof, but this was actually spot on accurate, and grabbed some bits of information most everyone else missed. Great job!
- streak, on 10/12/2007, -1/+24The lousy performance of EDGE was also hidden. All communications except voice were demonstrated over Wi-Fi, which is hugely better than EDGE.
- Rice, on 10/12/2007, -5/+25I just tried the phone number on Skype... got a lady who said "hello?" five times and hung up.
Woah, I'm wrong (edit)...
The real number up there was: 14089961010 - Apple
I dialed: 4089961810 - Lady - eatrains, on 10/12/2007, -2/+21The RIAA would have a fit. Public exhibition of songs? Absolutely forbidden.
- kenthorvath, on 10/12/2007, -4/+20It would be pretty shady, from a customer service point-of-view, if users couldn't easily create and choose ringtones from their music library. The implementation would be vanishingly simple compared to all of the rest of the features the phone has.
If they move to a purchased ring-tone only model, I would definitely reconsider a purchase (although, I tend to only use very quiet and polite tones). - sark666, on 10/12/2007, -1/+17Anyone else think it's just wrong buying ringtones. Esp if I already have the song, I should be able to upload a clip I made myself or specify say the first 5 secs of song X for my ringtones.
- foxymcfox, on 10/12/2007, -3/+16I'm sure the ringtones will be shorter snippets of songs as opposed to the whole thing. That way the ringtone is the "interesting part" of the some rather than just the intro of the song, which would make it damn hard to hear your phone ringing the way some songs start out. I'm sure this is just a way to ensure a song is usable as a ringtone...and get a few extra bucks.
This is an example of what I'm talking about, let's say you choose "Fergilicious" as your ringtone. If you just chose the MP3, AAC, etc, you would most likely have to listen to the boring beginning when your phone rings, but if Apple sells just the interesting parts as ringtones, then when your phone rings, you hear "Fergilicious, defi..." Ensuring a rockin' ringtone. - fanboydcs, on 10/12/2007, -6/+18wow I watched the keynote but gezz every time I look at that interface I drool...
- virtualball, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12I agree. I don't want to sound rash, but this could be the deciding factor in many people's decision. I know that I will get one because, since it uses bluetooth, I *should* be able to transfer ringtones (if it is a hidden folder) but if they disable that, I don't feel like paying $1.00 for a 30 second clip!
- phoopee3, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11less ranty - but after watching the video, he talks about ringtones as a separate purchase from the itunes library. it seems kind of odd that a phone which also plays music wouldn't allow you to use that music as your ringtone. instead you'd buy some muzak version of the same song? weird. but we'll find out eventually.
- phpfreak, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9I don't think that the iTunes Store will sell ringtones. I think that the iPhone preference pane in iTunes labeled "Ringtones" is most likely to put your existing music into the phone's ringtone folder.
- magicmarc, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10Cool, I never really noticed these things. Nice to get extra details from people who have really been observant, some pretty interesting things can come out there.
- wphj, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8I agree about vibrate, it makes more sense.
But cellphones are not bad, annoying people make it seem like it. - Xorsist, on 10/12/2007, -7/+14I dont know why mrgprime is being dugg down, this guy obviously doesn't know wtf hes talking about and is only making assumptions.
- ckohler, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9I prefer being called a geek to a nerd but thanks all the same. :)
- DaffyDuck, on 10/12/2007, -4/+11My wife and I were at Wal-Mart (I hate that place) earlier today and there was a guy just past the checkout counters standing at his cart looking around while holding his cell phone and blasting some scratchy, heavily distorted heavy rock music. It was bizarre.
- paulolemos, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8I can't even see how you guys analyzed so poorly the second image relating to the "used to reveal traffic info, while the one on the lower left is used for entering info among other things." as you described it.
It's clear that the icon on the right relates to a sort of "Get directions" and the icon on the left surely relates to "Find Restaurant". Both are international symbols!
Clicking the following link, you can find some pics that i created so you can all see what i am talking about.

http://pwp.netcabo.pt/0251962501/iphone/restaurant.jpg - Dmitrik, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8Buy/download an mp3 song, then just cut it to your liking with any audio software.
I suppose if you already own that song, why iTunes wouldn't let you cut it and use as a ringtone?
I hope there will be no talk about some other people hearing your song -and they didn't pay for it!-... that is just stupid and baseless. - gregdigg, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7In case anyone wants to watch the higher-quality version from their website (it's in mp4 format):
http://media24a.libsyn.com/podcasts/539e585aed7ed3bbbcee37268f913a57/45dfb5a7/actioncorp/ACTV-HiddeniPhoneDetails.mp4 - veeto, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Personally I don't think the matter about ring-tones was decided. Think about it, ring-tones can be any sound file, and certainly not just music. You might say, have a door bell as one of your ring tones and another a U2 track, possibly assigned to different people. One is a sound file that you don't particularly wish to listen to if you're using the iPod function of the phone. That requires some degree of management. The tab just seems to me an obvious way to manage your ring-tones: files that may be in your iTunes library or ones that you don't wish to be; it could include certain play lists or smart folders. That's not to say Apple won't go down this route, but I think the tab alone is far from any indication that they intend you to repurchase your music if you wish to use it as a ring-tone.
- spyderx, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9While being mostly conjecture, this was actually nicely done. He does clarify some features that were not clear or called out specifically in the keynote. One he covered that I'd already found the answer to, was LONG lists, having over 1500 contacts in my Treo today (99% for business), "If" I were to migrate to the iPhone, I certainly wouldn't want to search by contacts via the finger flick method. Would be impossible to find my contacts.
- gr8one, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7I agree, I would have never thought of some of that stuff, however it did occur to me to call that number that was shown in iTunes, has anyone tried it?
- ckohler, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Sorry about the audio weirdness. I used the only working microphone I had available at the time to do the voiceover... an old Playstation 2 USB headset mic of all things.
- limpidezza, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7@ spyyder
How is it that I am able to put any AAC or MP3 onto my blackberry pearl and use that as a ringtone?
P.S. Don't be such a dick. Thanks. - SanHolo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I still believe this may be possible. iTunes could create ringtones from your chosen music library songs while syncing; in that "Ringtones" - Tab, you only select which songs you'd like to have available as ringtones.
- Ireland, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5I find it hilarious when a guy gets dugg down, but the people who basically back him up get dugg up. The strange and mysterious world of digg I suppose. Still, good points all round, I agree. Oh by the I'd bet money that users of the iPhone will be able to make songs on their phone ringtones. Remember this ringtone store is just a rumor, and even if it's true it doesn't mean we can't rock out to the Beatles when our iPhone rings.. all you need is love.
- eurleif, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Why would the phone need a separate ringtones folder? If ordinary songs could be used as ringtones, I would expect the phone to have an interface for choosing a ringtone from the songs stored on it (remember, the iPhone is also an iPod).
- RexyRex, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7Somebody remind me, why CAN'T Apple let people use their songs synced from iTunes as ringtones? What can the ringtone industry do if they choose to allow this?
- M4cb0y, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5"Just like you have to buy songs from the iTS that you already own on CD?"
What? Why would you do that when you can import it? - peranadigital, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Very observant.
- iNunchuk, on 10/12/2007, -5/+8Apple never ceases to surprise.
- SmokeTheHun, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Traffic is already implemented in some apps used in phones already. My Blackberry Pearl has a Google Maps app that OMGosh allows me to look at traffic as it becomes available. This is more a Google WOW than Apple....although I am thinking of ways to dump T-Mobile and pick up a Cingular account w/ an iPhone.
- unknwn, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5I think they should bring this up on Diggnation, it would certainly explain a lot of things like "why the iPhone isn't coming out tomorrow."
- lpkmckenna, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Very nice vid. There were a few other things Jobs didn't demo. We didn't see an icon for camera operation, probably because that app will be a CoreImage-powered PhotoBooth app that isn't finished. Hopefully, the iPhone will also be able to capture and email video.
- winterwrz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Glad i watched that video! guess i was so busy drooling over the presentation of the Iphone that i missed those little details that are important. good post thanks for bringing it to the light.
- ckohler, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I think you're right on both counts. When I said "possibly landmark details" in the video, restaurants was essentially what I meant. I thought it looked kinda like a knife and fork but I only really noticed this after I had already recorded the voiceover and I had no idea that the car icon was the international symbol for directions. This leaves the question of how to view traffic, though.
- mrgprime, on 10/12/2007, -23/+26"This COULD be used for this... well.. actually I'm not sure because it's not visible. So it might not be."
- stuartjmoore, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4you dont want "bleep bleep" or "ring ring" type ring tones in your music collection...
- paulolemos, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I also forgot to mention that in the calendar image you guys didn't realize that the icon that you don't understand is really a button saying "Today" Just like we have the little middle button in iCal calendar
Again, clicking the following link, you can find some pics that i created so you can all see what i am talking about.
http://pwp.netcabo.pt/0251962501/iphone/today.jpg - Rozza, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3We have all seen how cool it is to unlock the iPhone, but how do you lock it? Steve had to turn it off then back on again!. Thats sounds a bit silly to me!, and what happens if you get a phonecall while phone is locked, do you have to unlock it, or does it auto unlock like other phones. Problem with iPhone unlocking is it could hang up or do something weird. Also, right now I can send songs from my iMac to my N73 via bluetooth and use them as ring tones. Why pay?!?
Anyway, thats my 2 cents - jebivuk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3He has bad vision skills
I see it like pauloemos does.
The Calendar thing he can't read is TODAY
and the symbol on the map was a fork and knife.
If you press it it will change to another category. Gas Stations, Theaters, Hotels etc.
The iPhone is just pulling data from Googles yellow pages. you can filter based on the basic categories.
The car on the right is to generate a list of directions from where you are to the item you pick not traffic info. CalTrans can't even get it's individual districts to share info much less get it to the public accurately. Then you would have to pull data from the individual cities also. Too much trouble for the work involved.
The key to sucess is contacts.
The downfall is always going to be that as an individual or as a business it is just still to hard to share, manage, control, restrict and distribute contact information between work, home, car, family, friends and others. The company or linux team that solves that problem will rule the world. - Nameless1, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Somehow this video reminds me of some 911 conspiracy documentary
- judsond, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I wouldn't mind them selling ringtones in addition to being able to use normal songs, but you should be able to use both. There could be some neat ringtones that are specifically ringtones (shorter, more useful soundwise to get your attention etc)
- magicmarc, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I agree with you foxy, but how about some music cropping integration? I mean, what about some integration in iTunes or even the iPhone itself, allowing you to "crop" an MP3, (or basically give a start and end time) which uses that segment as a ringtone? That wont be hard to do, and I think we would all prefer that.
- evelian, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The ringtones issue isn't just with iTunes, but with AT&T as well. They make plenty of money from ringtones themselves...they don't want to see that revenue just disappear.
- tracydanger, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I imagine if they don't let you use your music for ringtones, somebody will make a hack to do just that. I wouldn't mind if they gave the OPTION to add ringtones (and sold them on iTunes), but they better let you use your own music too.
I wondered if they might only allow previously purchased songs from iTunes as ringtones and not DRM-free mp3s.
One cool thing about the possibility of using your own DRM-free songs is that you could create ringtones (say...via garage band). I mean custom little jingle type ringtones, not full-fledged songs. -
