- WillHutch5, on 10/11/2007, -1/+9If I'm not mistaken, hitting the sleep/wake button while an incoming call is ringing will silence the ring.
- KennMac, on 10/11/2007, -1/+9"Display should have an auto-dim/off function to conserve battery life"
It does. In fact, there's a specific setting for this. Mine was set to 1 minute for default. If I leave it on and walk away for a minute, when I come back it will be off. It usually dims after 30 seconds.
I'm noticing more than a few requests on this page are already features on the phone. - mixplate, on 10/11/2007, -2/+7terminal + ssh.
- KennMac, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5You are incorrect. 1 push will silence the ringer, 2 will transfer the call to voicemail.
- cloudcity, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3I think you will see GPS eventually, here is why:
I have a Nokia 6682, I would not call it a smartphone by any stretch of the imagination. It does however, run on the Symbian 60 platform. I purchased, the TomTom North American maps pack, and a $70 bluetooth GPS unit. I am simply blown away by how well it works, I dont leave my local area without it. I DONT think it would work as well if the GPS was in the phone itself. By using bluetooth to bridge the display and gps unit, you allow for more flexible position of the GPS unit and better signal. Plus, that chip and battery in the GPS unit take up space that you might as well just leave in your car in the form of the Bluetooth unit.
In order to turn the iPhone into an incredible nav unit, apple needs to partner with TomTom or a leading map producer to build the app, the data for all of the US would take about 1-2GB. From there, you can just use a bluetooth GPS unit, which is preferred solution anyway...
Summary: You don't really want the GPS hardware in the phone, so be patient for Apple to partner with NavStar or TomTom to build the app! - PunkFenixJT, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3I was going to say that too.
In fact, at times i felt like my phone was auto-dimming TOO soon, so I've been meaning to change it..
some homework needs to be done before these requests are made - tastethevenom, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3How about voting on them digg-style so we can see which requests are more in demand?

- PhilMcKraken, on 10/11/2007, -2/+5Some good points here, but Apple has it's work cut out for it. Some of these are so obvious though, that I think Apple must have sort of had to draw a line in the sand in order to meet their ship date and just figured they would add these in later. I mean, no MMS?!? At least I hope that's what happened.
- Mystikal, on 10/11/2007, -2/+4No.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Wow, I have GPS and VZ Maps on my Free LG phone and I agree, one of the killer applications of this class of device. Especially when you get directions for it, when the directions guide you back onto course when you miss a turn, or you have been driving around Cleveland after you have only ever been to Cleveland once before in your life, the GPS and dynamic directions are a life saver. And Sometimes it is fun to just bring up the where am I map driving down the highway and see what is around me to do. All over 3g it is very fast.
Hopefully with the iPhone offering this type of service for free(kind of), Verizon will follow suit and make their map application free as well. - zenlunatic, on 10/11/2007, -4/+6How about self-destruction with fatal results.
- mgajda, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Actually you could get kinda-GPS with software update!
Nokia has such a feature, that is called location-awareness: cellphone guesses your approximate location, by measuring signal strength to nearby cell transceivers. Would be great if iPhone had a safe-but-convenient JavaScript interface for that!
[Security requires that all websites using location-awareness are explicitly authorized.] - superkendall, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2There is already a long discussion on how to add cut & paste here:
http://www.kottke.org/07/07/new-iphone-features
Personally my favored approach is similar to what you define, however you cannot simply start dragging to select as dragging is used to position the cursor for typing (and would be needed to accurately place the initial point for the start of a selection). However if you add a bubble as you described for paste, then you could activate selection after you had positioned the cursor...
The wrench in the works is that currently you cannot move a cursor over read-only text (like all text in a web browser, for example). - rebotfc, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Regarding cut and paste, i think you could at least do copy and paste with finger gestures.
Hold over some text to bring up the caret, then drag to highlight an area.
To paste, hold over the insertion point, the caret will then showing a little bubble of the last highlited text. to paste it you tap the bubble. - KennMac, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3Go buy a Blackjack.
- superkendall, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2If you have a really long key, have someone read you the characters one at a time - keys do not "take" until you let up off the screen, so you can slide your finger back and forth until the character bubble shows the key that will be typed when you let go. It should be easy to enter any length password, as long as you do not lose track of where you are...
- lucifuge, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2You can already group and filter contacts.
- superkendall, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2You can erase all contacts just by opting to sync from an iTunes with no contacts loaded, set to overwrite...
- jkoke, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2One tip for entering passwords -- the iPhone keyboard inputs the character when you release the key, so you can move your finger around before releasing it and use the big popup character confirmation to be sure you have the right character before releasing.
- ninetimes, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I'd second that. Even if they don't want to give shell access to the phone itself, the ability to ssh into another machine over the Internet would be incredibly useful. I wouldn't mind a VNC/RDP client either, but I can understand how that might be trickier.
- kingygk, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1The iphone really needs the ability to do streaming quick time files on the edge network and wifi. I tried to stream the quicktime version of Nasa TV on Nasa's website.
- wunch, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2"Let us browse the device via Bluetooth I’d like to be able to get the photos I took with the iPhone onto my computer without having to e-mail them back and forth . . . Anyone know what Windows users do?"
On my WindowsXP box, the iPhone is recognized a a digital camera, and shows up as such in My Computer. You can browse and (I assume) copy pictures taken with the iPhone's camera using Windows Explorer. - mikenike88, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Feature creep like adding a terminal app on the home screen is the exact opposite of what Apple is looking to do...
- sickswaystop, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2great list though its going to get bigger
- mgajda, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1How about streamlined biometric authentication?
I'm sure that high-end version could somehow automatically detect if the fingers touching it are entitled to mess with data. - pengas, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2Group and filter contacts, also erase all the contact in an address book.
- DCMacHead, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2While some of the guy's gripes are legit, I would recommend that he RTFM for several of his requests.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2jesus what a ***** site you have... i wonder what site inspired you to make that one...
nice touch that you have ads before you have visitors - KennMac, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1RTFA - "We’re more looking for things that can be added via software/firmware to improve the way the current iPhone functions."
- gigathlete, on 10/11/2007, -2/+3You are correct, 1 push will send it directly to your voicemail, 2 will let the caller hear the rings.
- manofaction, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Add Radar to the Weather Widget. You can view different cities by flicking left and right. Make it so when a user flicks up, you view the radar for the area!
- cchs, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0Feature requests:
1. Junk mail filtering for mail app
2. Ability to delete multiple emails messages at once
3. Search field in contacts view (so you can type the first few letters of a person's name to dial their number, scrolling for contacts is a pain and favorites only goes so far.
4. Flash plugin for safari
5. Custom ringtones
6. Copy and Paste!!
7. Phone should be oriented on the opposite side for watching videos (so that the physical volume controls are correctly oriented. Duh!)
8. Ability to orient the phone in horizontal mode for email, SMS, etc.
9. Ability to customize which buttons/apps are shown on the menu screen and dock (and where)
10. More open source development for games, apps, etc. The only thing I miss about my Treo is my Salling Clicker and my Scrabble game! - mariahill, on 12/26/2007, -0/+0http://www.lustvibes.com sex toys

1) Cut and Paste in the email editor.
2) International keyboard (at least for email). Even without a dictionary it would be most useful.
I personally need the ability to enter cyrillic characters. The phonetic layout, equivalent to QWERTY for latin keyboards, would be great for iphone. It has been in Mac OS X since version 10.3 - _skin_, on 10/11/2007, -3/+3How about the option to setup multiple VPN accounts? Plus add the terminal app to the home screen.
- DonnaDD, on 02/01/2008, -0/+0Maybe online shopping for adult related items? That would be good to have on the phone... make sure it's discreet and very personal so i can go to my favorite sex toy store and buy all my favorite adult stuff from the bus if i wanted to!! http://www.theadulttoyshoppe.com

What will blackberry do now? - jasorn, on 10/11/2007, -2/+2am i the only one thinking, "a $600 phone and it will have a long list of things it needs to improve?" something tells me the economic situation isn't as bleak as some would have us believe.
- MilanPatel1, on 09/13/2008, -0/+0Well as the trends come and go with silver fashion its best to stay on top and not go and spend al your money on one item.

The silver used in the manufacture of our jewellery is made from the purest silver combined with a small amount of copper to give it extra strength. http://www.buy-silver-jewellery.co.uk Silver is a soft metal, which means other stronger metals must be added to give the silver strength.
