- msaleem, on 10/12/2007, -0/+16This is the link: http://keakaj.com/visage.htm or just remove the ')' from above.
- msgyrd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13The title uses the word "hack" in the original sense of the word. No, this in no way compromises the security of the login window, nor will you be able to retrieve passwords with these instructions. This is a UI mod, (UI hack if you will).
All you wannabe scriptkiddies out there only prove your ineptitude when you respond with crap like "WTF this isn't hacking!" Learn some culture. - msgyrd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Hacking originally meant modifying. Words can have multiple meanings.
- er0k, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8wow, you are an idiot.
- s0ny, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9The comment at the bottom said it best, just download Visage (http://keakaj.com/visage.htm) and be able to do much much more without the hassle.
- spectre_25gt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I'm not so sure about that. I hate it when people use hack in the wrong sense, but I'd consider going into the interface builder and actually changing the nib a hack.
- SirThom, on 10/12/2007, -5/+10Who would want to modify the login window? It's beautiful!
- keaka, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Visage also allows you to randomize the login screen background, personalize some of the system alerts ("Hey sexy, are you sure you want to shut down?"), and more! I highly recommend Visage, it makes the customizations quick and easy. But then again, I'm a little biased since it's my app :)
- kensho, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4So much easier just to replace the tiff... and despite the author's warning, it does not show up at unexpected times. People have been doing this since 10.1.
In fact, here is a whole gallery of replacements: http://www.resexcellence.com/user_X_login.shtml - johnnyshuteye2, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Well if you actually follow the article you can do a lot more than just change the picture, the author was not very ambitious. Plus, it is free versus 10 bucks.
Though I'd just pony up the ten bucks if I was interested - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3thank you!
- msaleem, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Well point of submitting it to digg is that people would actually want to get their hands dirty and give it a try, rather than copping out and using a utility that does it all for you... plus who wants to pay man?
- captaindan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2People have been doing this since *NeXTSTEP*.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2does anyone know of a more comprehensive tool for modifying mac os, for example if i wanted to change the UI of itunes.
- Xeworlebi, on 07/25/2008, -0/+2for changing the GUI use ShapeShifter http://www.unsanity.com look for themes at http://www.macthemes.net/ and there forum http://www.macthemesforums.net/ to make you own skin, use ThemePark http://www.geekspiff.com/
- lightningrod220, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2On the contrary...
The linked article is just showing a very basic example of what you can do. Since it's a .nib file, you can do quite a bit... You could change the size and form factor of the window, in addition to moving buttons around... It looks like some parts are reliant on code, which you can't change, but at least this method is more useful than the Visage program. - mattwestm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I am not a big fan of hacking stuff, but this is pretty cool. Although I consider this to be cracking. Digg++
- JamesGHill, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Hobbs, great links. Thanks!
- zeabrid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@g5604,
Visage maybe, I used to know a wide variaty site ment entirely for UI hacks, but It's been so long since I've used a Mac. - awoodhouse, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1...and why?
- kensho, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2You know there is now a reply feature...
- ronaldpoi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1yeh. no need to change anything...
- pohl, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This is an old NeXT trick. Here's a different application using the same general
principle: open up Safari's interface NIB and remove the menu items for resetting
safari and clearing the history. This could keep your child's surfing habits out in the
open.
You'd have to repeat the effort after each Safari upgrade, but it doesn't really take
long at all. - CedanticPunt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Be careful, Shapeshifter has a reputation for causing problems with some people. Some people seem to have no trouble at all though, so you may be ok.
I tried another of their apps (FruitMenu?), and it caused no end of problems for me, so I uninstalled it. - PezFr33k, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1How do you change the login background without using visage?
- adesai, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Ironically, I just spent 30 minutes changing my Windows login screen to look like OS X. Now I feel like an idiot.
- delinka, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Here, here! I'd give all my mod points to you if this was another site.
- delinka, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yes, but the farking reply feature fowls up your reply if you happen to have been logged out before you hit reply. It forgets who you're replying to without warning.
- deevy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Hacking eq. modding is phun. when there are .apps which make it easier to those who want 'the' job done, fine. only i would like to get a (rough) idea how it is done, the moding that is, and thus i like to say thanks to all who provided details: Thanks! however, i may have overlooked something: i can not figure out how to change the login picture of the "other" user @ startup. scenario: Tiger, one user (eg. "steve") and one "other" (= admin) accounted. "steve" gets a fancy login-icon/pic, but where to change the "other" login-pic. a simple com.user0...tiff change won't do. any idea what .nib to digg?
- delinka, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@bbeahm:
do some research and learn what "hack" means - deevy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0found it. forget about the comment ^above^. the icon/pic in question is in ~/System/Library/CoreServices/SecurityAgentPlugins/loginwindow.bundle/Contents/Resources/DefaultUserIcon.tiff --as became obvious from boot-sequence/scripts detailled elsewhere it is via the init process that the loginwindow.app is given control.
- delinka, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Windows has a similar feature..."
Well, yeah, maybe. But this is *much* easier as the architecture of the system allows easy editing for this kind of thing with or without the included no-cost development tools.
Hack? Yeah, it fits the cultural definition, but the system is actually designed to allow this. It's certainly not designed to prevent it. - delinka, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Value Added Reseller giving customers a "rebate" for advertising
- austingilbert, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Follow the link in my comment above. It shows you how to do this using the file paths.
- ToadX, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Not really a hack. This is more of a built-in feature Apple provides. This would mainly be used by companies with many Macs that want to provide directions on the login screen or the company logo / name. Windows has a similar feature to put text on the login screen.
- austingilbert, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Interestingly enough, if you dig around in the OS, you'll find the Navy Seal... and one for the Marines... ;) And other interesting things buried down there.
- robwistar, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4"the man" here is an indpendant programmer starting his own company. this is the man i want to pay.
(if i had a mac :op ) - austingilbert, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0It seems that several people did this years ago!!
http://breakingrobots.net/blog/2004/08/10.html - alej744, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1ummm yeah I did this a long time ago... It had a cool-looking made up (10.5) OCELOT theme. It looked so slick especially when I put this B&W fur tiger background. Oh but the person who created it was a jackass and put HIS name by default to be shown in the user name text box.
I didn't use a program, just switched some scary-looking files around in my system folder
no digg - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1Why would a file be scary-looking. All you need to do is switch some image files around. Otherwise you'd be editing the .nib file and should know what your doing.
Personally I think this is one of OS X's strongest points. The developer tools come with EVERY single copy of OS X and everything is made available to the user to modify/hack/customize to their hearts content.
They make it the way they want it, the way they thing works best for everyone, but still hand you the tools and power to make it the way YOU want it.

http://www.mp3players4free.com/default.aspx?r=7214 - VeritasAequitas, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1This is not new or interesting at all, how to do this has been available free knowledge for years, plus you don't need to use a program specifically made for this. You can change the entire screen not just the words too. I did that to my iBook almost four years ago. Lame, no digg.
- theradical, on 10/12/2007, -8/+4i used bootcamp to modify my login window. lololoo
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -9/+4...that's it? boring..
- firemillen2, on 10/12/2007, -7/+0OH LOOK, ANOTHER APPLE SPAM ARTICLE. CHANGING THE LOG IN PAGE IS IMPORTANT TECH NEWS?
In other news, iPods might come in other colors! WOW !!! - bbeahm, on 10/12/2007, -12/+3WOW SOMEBODY FIGURED OUR HOW TO HACK OSX!!!!!! (sarcasm)
A better title should have been Modify the Mac login window.
NOT HACK - zeabrid, on 10/12/2007, -14/+2Not a "Hack", just "Modifying", no digg.
- Agret, on 10/12/2007, -14/+1wtf? ***** title, this doesn't let you get people's passwords.... No hacking to be found, reported as lame.
- boring, on 10/12/2007, -23/+1MacOS Suxks
- boring, on 10/12/2007, -23/+1Christ, I had heard on /. that digg sucks, but this is beyond words. Go back to your "ultra 1337 h4x0ring t00lz", you freaks.

What is Digg?
