See? When you DON'T post your blogspam link under your post you don't get dugg down as bad! - Terc, on 10/12/2007, -9/+20Runs a stripped down version of OSX (Linux ready). Touch screen. Wifi. Fits in your pocket.
:drools: - se1zure, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12"You can hack a slice of old bread for as long as you like - it still won't taste any good."
WHy would you eat an iPhone. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8It's already gone...
- zephc, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6I'm pretty sure anything iTunes and an iPod can play will play on the iPhone, like all one's MP3s which are DRM-free.
- se1zure, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5(as far as I know) There has yet to be a portable device with capabilities other than storage that does that.
It's not meant to be a hard drive. - cl0r0x70, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7Jobs has made one large mistake on his record: locking down the Apple computer in an attempt to turn it into an appliance. It was the largest reason that mac lost the war for the desktop in the 90's, and also lead to him getting fired.
He's trying to do the same thing with the iPhone. 99% of the time, he's right on the money. But when he screws up, he REALLY screws up.
P.S. Since OS X, I've been a mac fan boy, and I WANT an iPhone. But it would triple its usefulness for me if they would let 3rd parties develop for it (and give me a telnet client.) I don't know if I can justify the expense for a locked-down phone. - schroduggity, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3seriously.
without custom apps the Iphone is nothing more than a cellphone that's cheaper to browse the internet on. - zdiggler, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5NO just get the iPhone from Cisco and you're set.
- AriaStar, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5Get me a drool bucket. There's a forum out there already dedicated to iPhone hacking. Of course, there's not exactly much up yet, but still. I'm sign up. And waiting. This is gonna be sweet.
- ggko, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"WHy would you eat an iPhone."
Isn't OS X supposed to be *lickable*? - NSResponder, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The APSL sets the conditions for third parties (that's you and me) to use the Darwin code. It doesn't apply to the copyright holder (that's Apple.)
-jcr - saikhan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Quick, someone register iphonehacks.com!
- ggko, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I'm just pulling thoughts out of my ass, so bear with me.
Some people don't need a full fledged laptop. Played right, and if it does all things as well as the Jobsian distortion field hypes, it could replace the laptop, pda, and mobile phone for many people. Provide a portable keyboard, and you've got apps on the go when tapping around PDA style just won't do. Given a docking station, and you've got a desktop for non-gamers ... it runs OS X, browses the web and plays H.264, so surely it can handle an office suite.
And you can't shove a laptop into your pants pocket.
Now they just need to figure out how to keep it from cutting into MacBook sales, which may be part of the reason they're keeping it locked up for now. - zdiggler, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Yeah, e911 is not real GPS receiver. It just figure out where you at from echo it receive from your phone to towers. Hack your phone and try it, it work from my bathroom where real GPS receiver can't pickup satellite. (not that I need a GPS to find bathroom in my house) GPSone testing under service menu on most phones.
I does pickup satellite info but only need one, where gps reciever need at least 3. - brianez21, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@AriaStar:
Please share the forum's url? Thanks! - saikhan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2It was taken looooooooong ago:

- EXreaction, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2They are not talking about hacking as in modifying it to work the way they want for personal use...
For those who did not read the article...
“If it’s really going to run OS X, [the iPhone] will bring certain security implications, such as potential misuses of wireless connectivity facilities, [and] deployment of malware in a larger scale,” the hacker known as LMH wrote in an e-mail. He declined to provide his real name.
Because the device could include a range of advanced computing features, such as Apple’s Bonjour service discovery protocol, it could provide many avenues of attack, according to LMH. “The possibilities of a worm for smartphones are something to worry about,” he wrote. “Imagine Bonjour, and all the mess of features that OS X has, concentrated in a highly portable device which relies on wireless connectivity. - se1zure, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4and purple != blue.
- deadbaby, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"misuses of wireless connectivity"
If I am paying for a data plan I can do whatever I want with my wireless connectivity. - rdoger6424, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1wtf, my comment borked! There's nary a delete button in sight...
- patientXero, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5Please hack the ***** out of it!
If it is locked to Cingular (AT&T) and proprietary to Apple with only iTunes DRM it is next to useless as a multipurpose tool.
I, for one, will not switch providers for the "privilege" of owning an overpriced (albeit amazing) piece of non-compatible tech. - meatmcguffin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The emergency services can triangulate a location by judging the signal strength, and therefore distance, of towers from the phone combined with the ID of each tower
- catbeller, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Hack it for use as a WiFi phone. Holy Grail. Oh yes, and as a ebook reader, no DRM.
- patientXero, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The triangulation method you are describing is much less accurate than gps. especially for moving targets.
- Denatsu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Hehe. Wifi hacking in widescreen handheld touchscreen format...beautiful.
- MacParrot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Depends on how well it makes iPopCorn.
- TVarmy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Who wants to bet there will be a beta version of a hacked Linux firmware out before the iPhone ships?
- rdoger6424, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1but you forgot that , especially cookie dough mother pants, without :D
- morcheeba, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@dayz: Closed source can slow people down and dissuade some people, but it's not much of a barrier. Reversing from the raw bits can be done. Remember the "disposable" digital cameras?
@brianez21: Considering that everyone is on equal footing now (since AFAIK no phones are in hackers hands), which forum won't matter -- it'll be mostly empty talk. Check back in six months and that's when the forums will start to differentiate themselves. - catbeller, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@zdiggler:
Sorry, but e911 is a real GPS receiver and transmitter. If activated by you, or the phone company, or whatever legally powerful entity wants it activated, it transmits your location with an accuracy of meters many times a minute. It doesn't use the cell phone tower trick at all. It's using a GPS satellite signal receiver. And yes, I'd call it a tad intrusive! If the iPhone doesn't have this, I will buy it because it would be the only cell phone without GPS tracking on sale in the U.S. If it is. I wonder how they'd get out of the GWB Everyone Gets Tracked act of 2002? - zephc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I like how LMH is making noise in this article about exploits and such. He's one of the guys involved in the Month of Boring Apple Bugs ( http://projects.info-pull.com/moab/ ).
- ggko, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Is it locked up forever, or locked up *for now*?
Suppose they want to work out the bugs, patch up the holes, work out the kinks first before they open it for everyone muck around with. - GeneralFailure0, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3@schroduggity
Except ya know, it also has the capabilities of a widescreen video iPod. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0They are the only ones.
- vagarach, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1or he made teh same error as when you type 'the'.
;)
I still don't understand why so many people use !=. How many code for so many hours a day that they think in a programming language? Far more concise though, that is true. - zdiggler, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1already got a lot of devices out there like that for 1/2 the price of it. NO SERVICE contract required!
- DavidLJ, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4If it doesn't have a hundred gigs for a hundred bucks, I'm not interested in it.
- AriaStar, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1@ dayz:
Anything can be hacked. If you know what you're doing. - wired4u, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Someone correct me if I am wrong, but if the iphone dose indeed have the same kernel as osx wouldn't they have to publish the source since darwin is open source? I am sure the phone will look like osx, but it will be different from the full version that runs on macs.
- green1152, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1godaddy gets on my nerves.

Translation:
I just made a critical statement about Apple, but dont mod me down!! - Jomwilli, on 10/12/2007, -7/+6My preciousssss.. Will most definitely be hacking this bad boy most simply because Apple is not allowing 3rd party apps on it.
- JoshIRL, on 10/12/2007, -9/+7Iphone =! worth its price
- monergism, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2I don't want the cell service. I have been looking for a small kiosk to run my calendar/itunes/email for some time now. I hate my desktop computer (G5) and my laptop (Vista) is too large to mount in the entry way.
So, I'll get one provided it is hackable and I can get away from OSX. -
