- fletchowns, on 10/12/2007, -3/+43yeah, great. now you can rub one out while sitting in traffic. EXCELLENT
- KilgoreCarp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11Apple... Prius... OMG... Smug Overload...
/i keed - iheartbeer, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11Yeah, but unless a "touch/drag" scrolls the thing, he won't be listening to ZZ Top or XTC any time soon.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I've got my Texas Instruments TI-65 statistical calculator integrated with the buttons on my Bose Monsoon car stereo, showing the reults on my compas/temperature display. PLUS it all fits in my ashtray.
Now thats a hack! - Ryan229, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6"I've found the CarNetix CNX-P1900 PSU to use to power the mini and have it sleep when I turn off the car."
- Dhalgren, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Does the Prius come with a touchscreen? If it does, then that's just awesome and perfect for all sorts of carpc options, not just a mac mini.
- UltraNurd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Mac Mini fits into Prius map holder almost too well... coincidence???
Seriously though, that's a damn cool DIY. - diggmaddy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5I would be more concerned about ventillation in that closed box!
- Desolite, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5iSmug?
- UserAgent, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Why does the boot time matter? Just leave it in sleep mode when the car is off. Waking up the computer from sleep is nearly instantaneous.
- Dhalgren, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4a mini-itx running a linux carpc program would be better. What's cool about the mini-itx solution, too, is that they have power supplies that are "car battery friendly" and do soft shutdowns when the car is stopped, etc.
These are some good sites for seeing what's available:

Actually they all come with them. The screen is used for more than just the Nav. package. - vypergts, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Mac + Prius = Wozniak's Wet Dream
- Ireland, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2It depends, around 25 seconds.
- mz00m, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3A mac user that drives a prius who listens to phish, surprise!
- hydrokayak, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2This is pretty cool. I would do it if I had the space in my rig to do it. Anyone know that the boot load time on a Mac Mini is? I'm stuck with my windows machine... :( I'm not sure how good this would be if it loaded slowly...
- diecastbeatdown, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2not like this. check out the document, this is the first time it has ever been done like that using the touchscreen in the prius with the mac and frontrow. excellent article, i was reading it earlier today before seeing it on here as i'm getting ready to setup a mac mini in my car - but not a prius.
- chicken101, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3If I'm not mistaken, it's for the optional navigation system.
- xoineg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2For those who don't have a mac...they shut down a lot fatser than windows much faster...
- Seidoger, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2But I like to see that gorgeous Energy Monitor screen! :P
Pretty cool still! - taotehue, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3but imagine a beowulf cluster of these!!!!
- djblast, on 10/12/2007, -12/+14big deal, its already been done, multiple times over....
- mistermanoli, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2has mozilla.. makes it even better..
- SwornPacifist, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Coral Cache:
http://www.kusnetz.net.nyud.net:8080/prius/
I also set Coral Cache to load all the full-sized pictures, so you can still view the pictures linked from the thumbnails. - UltraNurd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1You could make it suck the batteries dry.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Wow. That's a great solution. Thanks for the idea.
- afex, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1i have an xbox running XBMC in my car for music instead of a stereo, and i ended up putting a UPS in there so when i run into a store or something it doesn't loose what i'm listening to. The UPS is triggered by the accessories line, so it only charges while the car is running, and not when the car is off. (this would be a good time to point out that if i forget to turn the xbox off when parking at night, it will indeed drain the entire UPS)
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1hmm...if you set it up like I set up my XM radio...mine never shuts off...so I can just set it to sleep when I'm done...bingo
- bdwoolman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Sweet. Lots of work. Kudos.
No longer a Prius... It's a Pimpus. - gh02t, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Whoa, thats pretty nifty. Wish I could do it :(
- longofest, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1this was definitely submitted 112 days ago and made front page.
- Dhalgren, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Pictures?
- hydrokayak, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I would actually put in some sort of UPS for use when you leave and get right back into the car... It'd be something nice to try out
- AndyVenus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It's cool, but I think it's a waste of a mac. Something to show his friends though I guess.
- jk_baller23, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2It would be cool if cars had firmware that looked like apple's front row music part when you connect your ipod. That would then be the ultimate iPod integration.
- martz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1in the article he said that the touch screen did a max touch resolution of 16x16, but he split his up into 3 x 3, with (from the number pad) 7 being escape, 8 being volume up, 2 vol down, 4 and 6 left and right
i haven't watched the videos though (i'm at work, so i don't know)
this type of project would be much cooler if you could design an interface to make it like the ipod scroll wheel... better yet add in one of those capacitance sensor things shown the other day and have a no-touch display, now that would be sweet - pete10203, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1yea it would be real cool... except its 6 months old... OLD NEWS
- jfinke, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Just wondering why it would be better?? There are power supplies for the mac that do exactly what you said.
Plus, FrontRow is pretty slick. If anything I would run windows so you can run navigation software. Unfortunately, navigation software for both Linux and Mac is severly lacking. Garmin and TomTom claim that they are coming out with versions for Mac, but I will believe it when I see it. - beelz, on 10/12/2007, -8/+8ok iam not a big fan of macs but thats cool.
- cwoolf34, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3saw this a while ago.
- nicc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0hmmm, didn't know that Bose made Monsoon...now I know why my Passat stereo system sucks :(
- ageedoy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0If Toyota uses the same touch screen throughout their product line, then theoretically the same mod would be applicable to navigation equipped vehicles like the Lexus IS, GS, etc as well.
- craigtheguru, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1My Prius is arriving in the next two weeks and I was hoping something like this would pop up. Sounds like my next project! A new mini also has a remote control so you can't get better than that!
- briser, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Pretty cool idea, but i'd be constantly concerned about a $600 computer in my car that has the potential to be stolen at any time.
- ummagummas08, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Too bad its a ***** phish song, though I've seen this before.
Maybe if he was listening to Antelope or Cavern I'd have a little more respect, Bouncing is just like the most mainstream phish song ever.. - jkusnetz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Well poop, the story got buried.
It was fun while it lasted. Ended up getting 13,114 page impressions for a total $11.45. the 26,000 above was all time, so I basically doubled my hits today. - NecroBones, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Nah, last time it was posted, he hadn't gotten very far with it. It's much more complete now.
- 4815162342, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2um, this is old. i think it was on the front page a while ago. newbs.... ouch, my reregistering makes me look like a n00b
- jkusnetz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Hey this is my page.
If anyone is interested in the Digg affect, and how much a generic google adsense banner will get you, today since this making to the frontpage of Digg according to adsense I've had over 26,000 page impressions worth a wopping $4.90.
We also peaked at about 30Mb of traffic over yesterday's traffic at the time of the posting. -
