- muaddib420, on 10/12/2007, -2/+38compare opening an ipod to opening one of those ^&$@&% blister packs. struggling with heavy duty scissors and then getting frustrated and trying to rip it open hulk-style and then crying like a little baby when one of the sharp edges cuts me.
- jhaydon, on 10/12/2007, -4/+39There is something about unwrapping Apple products that just gives you this warm feeling inside - remember when you opened your first iPod??
And no - I'm NOT a fanboy... - ThinkBox, on 10/12/2007, -1/+27Apple's packing is the "New Car Smell" of computers.
The thing that I think that Apple understands is that when you buy a nice new expensive product, the moments when you opening it are very exciting. You tend to savor every detail as your new "toy" is slowly revealed to your eyes. (think your old Christmas home video, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pFlcqWQVVuU)
They get how much that moment effects the perception of the product -- the first time you see it -- the first time you own it --
Think how different this is from when you buy something with that annoying hard plastic wrap when you almost cut your fingers off when trying to open it. (Colbert clip if anyone remembers.)
Apple's packing is the "New Car Smell" of computers - wild, on 10/12/2007, -1/+16"Hell I remember when I opened a girls zipper for the first time.....geez people"
Yea, so do I. And of the two, only the iPod is still around. - moofer, on 10/12/2007, -3/+17They use non-toxic inks, clearly label each part of their packaging of the recycling type, and minimize wherever possible. Even their styrofoam is hollowed out when formed, to minimize the amount of material. If you had ever unboxed one of their products instead of reading FUD from greenpeas, you'd see this for yourself. Every computer comes in a box. Apple's boxes are just-as-green, if not greener, than any other manufacturer.
As for the fact that this hitting the front page... If you think this is "dumb *****", why are you here reading it? Dumb *****. - Gregd, on 10/12/2007, -6/+19Hell I remember when I opened a girls zipper for the first time.....geez people
- nofxjunkee, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12The thing I remember most about opening my iPod was that it told me in big bold letters right on the iPod: "Do not steal music!"
- sjbdallas, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11I just like getting the stickers
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10You forget to take these this morning?
http://www.thegooddrugsguide.com/articles/images/ritalin.jpg - KSUdesigner, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Some of us use a Mac because they are better at doing what we need them to do (for me, graphic design), not because we want to be different than the rest of the world. How does the type of computer I use correlate to me being an *****, or a guy who has never ***** a woman?
- dmoney06, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9@jayhayden
I remember. I was so excited! - JoeOReilly, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9Get ***** over it.
- moofer, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7This is the best article I've ever read about Apple's packaging. A very good read.
http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?file=/gate/archive/2003/10/01/notes100103.DTL - liveinabin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6I loved Apple's packaging. I use the past tense as it's rather suffered recently.
I recall unpacking my 3G 40Gb iPod. That beautiful cubic box that spilts neatly in two with everything you'll need tidily and stylishly packed in. The message it gave was "you've got something a bit special here".
In contrast, on unpacking a new 5G 80Gb iPod video with it's tiny box (and no charger), the message now seemed to be, "Yeah? Everyone's got an iPod now, what makes you so great?!". - node3, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Well, I guess we now know Steve Ballmer's Digg username...
- dle5, on 10/12/2007, -9/+13There is truth to all that. Opening something as unexciting as a Airport Express was a distinct pleasure just because of the ease of removal. No hassles.
- Zippo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4The 4G iPod was my first introduction to Apple's packaging and I still have the box... It was like origami... It made the experience of getting an iPod all the more exciting.
- z.unit, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5And you're blocked, go take some Midol honey.
- skrapek, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4"Isn't this meant to be a technology website where people choose performance/technology over marketing/design?"
No. It's not. - pyrophire, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3We don't like conforming to what the rest of the world uses, look at our measuring system, we havent switched to metric :)
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5Yay let's celebrate packaging that fills up landfills.
- mazirion, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I still have my original Macintosh carrying case. Typical Apple product - well made.
- EricJD, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3My Gateway laptop was like that - aside from the shipping information, it was just a black and white cow-print box with "Gateway" on the side.
So Apple's not the only one. - awhawkeye, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2wouldn't it be more like dating someone you may find attractive, but her style is whack and wears unflattering clothing??
- kriminalintent, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Looks close to the same design pizza hut uses now...
The keyboard looks like bread sticks! - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3What some of you don't seem to grasp is that if no one gave a rats ass about package design, every box in the world would like some godawful myspace page in 3d with ***** all over the place. It's a good thing that at least one company cares enough to make clean and easily digestable design a priority.
- steal_apps01, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The iPod box on my now, "old school" b&w iPod 4th gen was beautiful, unfortunatly I lost the box.
Oh... blister packs suck ball sack, why do they make those? - pluox, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3*couf!* http://www.siteadvisor.com/sites/aresluna.org?ref=safe&aff_id=0 *couf!*!!
- iJump, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I was just about to post that. Just be careful where you click.

I don't know, just buying my Airport Express was a good feeling. My iBook controls my houses music, wirelessly :) - steal_apps01, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"it is a bit confusing."
Your Face is a bit confusing!
1,2,3...
BURN - Number17, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Want to know why there's so much packaging in land fills? Name one thing you've ever bought that didn't come in a package... If you want less packaging in landfills, QUIT BUYING *****! Since that's not going to happen, quit complaining.
- node3, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"performance/technology over marketing/design"
I'll take "False Dichotomies" for a hundred, Alex. - MadFunk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1bmwboy, this is a little ironic, but I'm afraid you're the one whose being ignorant at this juncture. The poster is from Macintosh's 20th, not Apple's-- and this article doesn't state that today is the 20th anniversary for either!
I won't lie: it is a bit confusing. - ravitek, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1...and the packaging just keeps getting smaller!
For the new mini, they even shrunk the apple stickers - bmwboy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Wow. The ignorance level just rose. Apple has been around for 30 years, since 1976, 30, not 20.
- dickberg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0this new web page digg - can be another answer to special subject research.

hang in there guys dick vdb - n00bst3r, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2http://crunchgear.com/2006/08/26/green-peace-scores-electronics/
- kriminalintent, on 10/12/2007, -5/+2a lot of you guys are total hypocrites. If you really think packaging and looks don't mean anything, go date someone you find ugly. When you are in fount of something all day sometimes how you see it visually matters also. Don't be jealous of apple for having a model.
- EricJD, on 10/12/2007, -7/+2My thoughts exactly.
- EndofEternity, on 10/12/2007, -10/+2Why is this on the front page? Digg is really overrun by Apple fanboys. I mean worshiping packaging, does it ***** matter?
Isn't this meant to be a technology website where people choose performance/technology over marketing/design? - donnie0darko0, on 10/12/2007, -12/+3This story just seems to remind me that people are very easily impressed, and it definitely implies that people aren't very smart (which of is not always the case, but it implies this nonetheless). When you need a keyboard shaped box to clearly label a keyboard, perhaps you shouldn't be working with computers. If opening a box makes you feel special . . . you probably ARE special (besides, what made you special is that you decided to fork over 2 or $300 for a product.)
- emorphien, on 10/12/2007, -14/+4I guess it works for some people, it does very little for me. I never think much of opening things because I want to get through the packaging as fast as possible.
- n00bst3r, on 10/12/2007, -17/+3I especially like how Apple is the "least green" of all the US PC manufacturers, and partly because of their packaging. While I will agree opening and Apple product is cool, do we really need to flood the front page with dumb Apple stories? I bet that there are hundreds of good stories that get overlooked everyday for dumb ***** like this.
- marix, on 10/12/2007, -21/+5While everyone else was shipping computers in boxes, apple was shipping computers in boxes with pictures on the side!!!!
OMG NO-WAI
remember when gateway had cow print boxes? that was way friggin better than this. - Splitt3rxx, on 10/12/2007, -28/+4WOW!!!!! AMAZING!!!!! THEY PUT SMALLER BOXES IN A BIG BOX!!!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -43/+3if you use a mac ***** you, if you use linux ***** you. get with the times you ***** ***** sons of bitches. Use the ***** operating system that the whole ***** world uses. ***** you if you digg me down! Yeah, that means you *****!!! ***** *****! Get a ***** life! ***** a woman for a change! Idiots!
