- GrooveStix, on 10/12/2007, -1/+30Yeah baby!
Total decentralization of the music industry is the future!
Count me in! - AshTR, on 10/12/2007, -6/+26Hehehe. Did anyone else read this story as the following?
"Grooveshark Private Alpha Available - Get Paid to Pirate Music!" - FTLJohnson, on 10/12/2007, -2/+22comment abuse to quote jgreenberg's comment from below
" Maybe I should have included this in the description, but just to clarify, Grooveshark is a legal system that compensates artists, publishers, and all other copyright holders for each song that is downloaded (except those artists who opt to be CC licensed, of course). "DRM-Free" and "Free" are two very different things. :-) "
This way it doesn't get buried as the comments pileup, so that people understand the difference between DRM Free and Piracy. DRM Free music (at least in this case) is INTENTIONALLY DRM Free because it is coming from INDY Labels and artists that want to try and cut out the unimportant (imho) middleman that is the recording industry and record labels.
(there should be no reason now to see a bunch of comments below by people calling this a system for Piracy... If you think that RTFA again, because you didn't get it) - conman16x, on 10/12/2007, -3/+22@ mikeabundo

I'm glad to see that even though this link has virtually NOTHING to do with Apple or PC specifically, this has now turned into a routine and tiresome squabble over the (supposed) supremacy of one Computer Company over another.
This seems like a pretty cool idea, although this IS just the alpha test. - jgreenberg, on 10/12/2007, -3/+15Thanks to everyone who signs up!
- gstuartj, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11My account request is in...
I've been watching Grooveshark since they announced it, and I think it will be a _huge_ success. I see it as the Adwords of music. Since users are compensated, I think it will really take off and become successful. I'd love to see this happen, too. Any provider that sells DRM-free music gets cool-points in my book. - laurenjoann, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13So this is a pretty freakin' good idea.
- yensed, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11Someone, Quick, Throw a Bugmenot account up there.
- Ouze, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10Maybe he *doesn't like* firefox. The only thing lamer then mac vs PC flaming are browser nazis.
- EztliNahua, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Hell yes.
- ThndrShk2k, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7How do they get money?
~~~~
1) DRM Free Music
2) Share it on the internet
3) ???
4) Profit! - mikeabundo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8How do they compensate artists?
- cabel, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7It does not matter what browser you use,,,,,so long as IT IS NOT INTERNET EXPLORER! Oh, unless you like swiss cheese security and spam and......
- Nocturnal, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4The site crashes IE7. Did this happen for anyone else? Well not necessarily crash but it brings it to a halt.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7WHY IS THIS ***** IN APPLE?
- lateralus, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5hang on, i'm signing up my 6th account...
- kangaegoto, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Well done. Yet another UF student project with the potential for tremendous success.
Go Gators! - pbull, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3@g3r4
From the site: "Sync your library with any player from iPods to iRivers"
and: "We distribute DRM-free MP3s across a p2p network." - boombye, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Please refer to J. Greenberg's comments up above.
- MrSunshine, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5The website doesn't explain at all how the musicians are compensated and how everything actually works. Do visitors really sign up for something they don't know exactly how it works?
- jimmykane, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Actually, The lion's share of the download goes to the copyright holder. Then the remaining portion of the download is split between Grooveshark and the person the download came from. I think the actual compensation for a .99 cent song is .14 cents for the user and .15 cents for Grooveshark. They have a lot more info on the parent company site, www.escapemg.com. There's a media kit in the virtual press room. It also says there that songs vary in price according to popularity.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2So you can get one? Screw you, I want one.
- cabel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Just applied for an account. I am wondering though if the comp is like 0.0000001 cents per song shared or something...?
- conman16x, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Well, this is the way I understand it.
1. Someone pays to download a song (up to 99 cents depending on popularity of the track, I think)
2. The copyright holders get about 2/3 of that revenue
3. The remaining 1/3 is split between Grooveshark and the user who uploaded the track in question
4. The user saves up the credit he or she earns from other users downloading their tracks
5. The user spends his/her saved up credit on music they like (i.e. free music for them) and the whole process begins anew.
They say there will be other ways to earn credit on Grooveshark such as fixing song tags, flagging unwanted files, and writing reviews of music. As far as I understand it users don't get paid cash money, just credit that they can use within Grooveshark. - deefault, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I read an article about grooveshark a while back....they compensate artists because you have to pay for each song you download, the users just provide it in a p2p fashion. The idea is you sign up and share all your music with the community, if someone buys one of your songs, you get a portion of the revenue and so does the artist.
- metafore, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2***** the riaa (coming straight out the underground)
- aliensito, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I doubt the shark has an RIAA tattoo, http://uf.freeculture.org/2007/04/07/have-you-seen-the-shark/ theres the grooveshark shark protesting DRM (blog by freeculture)
- LukeEsntlPdx, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Yeah, there is almost zero detail on that website.
If it compensates artists, then that's great and I'd like to support the site. But I see no evidence of that. This could just be another AllofMP3 - conman16x, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I think you get compensated when someone downloads one of your shared songs and then you get something like 1/6 of the price they paid for the song (which depends on the popularity of the song).
- mrpither, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1anyone know how much artists get for an itunes download?
- aliensito, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@astrotrain I doubt the shark has an RIAA tattoo, http://uf.freeculture.org/2007/04/07/have-you-seen-the-shark/ theres the grooveshark shark protesting DRM (blog by freeculture)
- catalysis, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I see it turning into a pyramid scheme where everyone downloads the most popular songs to share and make money. Then you have people just downloading to make money from other people downloading to make money...and somehow, someone gets a ferrari
- WiseWeasel, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I dunno, maybe MUSIC?!?
- astrotrain, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1** knock on door **
Voice: "I have delicious DRM-Free music here for you...."
Lady: "Go away your that awful Grooveshark..."
Voice: No I'm not... can I have your IP?
Lady: "No..."
Voice: "I want to give you a free present..."
Lady: "Oh okay..."
*lady opens door to massive shark with "RIAA" tattooed on its fin* - drew00629, on 12/19/2007, -0/+0Anyone ever see those late night cop shows where they set up some type of elaborate sting to bust people? They offer free gifts or free vacations to lure the person. Ive never heard of grooveshark, but all the sudden received an invite from someone i dont know. This my friends is exactly as astrotrain described. You will sign up and start hosting music, and days later, you will have a knock on your door.
- zmigliozzi, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1it seems sketchy.
Please enter IP and address so we can send a present. - naonao, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2@Nocturnal - I'm sure you've heard this before but, WHY AREN'T YOU USING FIREFOX?!
- g3r4, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2So this is basically a community that shares music via browser playback, but no downloads? Please tell me if I'm wrong.
But if I read it correctly, this is a great idea. If I read it incorrectly, I've just added my info to a site that'll be taken down by the RIAA in about 15 minutes... - thunderer, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3Competition with the iTMS would be my guess.
What other category could it go under? - kingchad1989, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1@andrewufl
I hope that another one of those reasons wasn't your comma placement... - ilgaz, on 10/12/2007, -6/+2Thanks for validating RIAA idiots.
- naonao, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1Mac vs. PC wars are not lame. Actually they are because we all know what the superior machine is (mac).
- fef560, on 10/12/2007, -7/+2Let me put this in a language you can understand: NO U LULZ!11!!!
- fef560, on 10/12/2007, -8/+2But it already is
- fef560, on 10/12/2007, -10/+3Don't get too jealous now
- flickmaster, on 10/12/2007, -20/+8It's always bothered me, but shouldn't it be Macs are better than *Windows*, considering the computers Macintosh sells now use the same architecture as PCs do. By saying Macs are better than PCs you are in effect saying "MY WHITE SHINNY PC CASE IS SUPER NEATER THAN YOURS EVEN THOUGH I HAVE ABSOLUTELY NO IDEA WHAT COLOR YOUR PC CASE COULD BE BECAUSE WE ARE TALKING OVER THE INTERWEBS!". Hell, I have seen plenty of shiny white cases sold by companies other than Apple.
You can run any ***** x86 OS on a "Mac" just like you can a Dell, Gateway, or any home made PC. You can even run OSX on non Apple branded PCs (Yes, PC, APPLE MAKES PCs, GET IT?). So shut the ***** up and compare operating systems because that is what you really mean to say is better. Even if the the current OSX is just an absolutely horrid rip of a BSD.
To sum everything up: I hate you, go die in a fire.
Feel free to digg me down now. - Ilikeboys, on 10/12/2007, -20/+3pc ownzzzz!
